On New Year's Day, 1916, Horton and Port Eynon lifeboat volunteers paid a heavy price after braving conditions some called the worst in living memory When a steamer ran aground near Pennard Cliffs on the Glamorgan coast, Horton and Port Eynon volunteers launched their rowing lifeboat into the teeth of a gale. Unable to reach the steamer due to the conditions, the lifeboat – Janet – began to head back. But it was too late. The lifeboat capsized twice. And after she was righted for the second time, three crew members were missing. Without oars, and drifting towards Mumbles, all the crew could do was huddle in the bottom of the lifeboat and hope. The grandfather and great-grandfather of the current lifeboat station's Volunteer Lifeboat Operations Manager, Lawrie Grove, were on the Janet that day. In this episode – dedicated to William Eynon, George Harry and Billy Gibbs – Lawrie recounts what happened. 200 Voices is produced by Adventurous Audio for the RNLI    Soundtrack composed and performed by Jon Nicholls    The RNLI is a charity celebrating 200 years of saving lives at sea - find out more at RNLI.org/200

We are finally here at the end of the road, and the end sure didn't come fast enough! In the conclusion of this 5-episode arc, we see Bonin initially held on the charge of rape of a minor, but with the mixture of mounting evidence and flapping jaws (I guess Bonin didn't consider his co-conspirators to be "witnesses"...), a grisly picture is painted; one that will forever change the landscape of southern California. After a long time period of seemingly unrelated murders, the dots were at last connected; the news media dubbed this monster the "Freeway Killer", and the story gained traction everywhere very quickly. In part 4 of this series, Bonin relishes in his infamy as he continues down his road of terror with new (and old) accomplices. As bodies are found, police start gravitating toward their suspected perpetrator, and it's only a matter of time before Bonin takes his last joy ride.

Welcome back to the uplifting, feel-good story of William Bonin! In the third part of this series, we see his escalation and brutality evolve during both his solo and accomplice-supported murders. With a jail sentence looming on the horizon, Bonin wastes no time in making sure he gets his "fix" before imprisonment. Of course, it doesn't stop there; the ramping up continues after his early release, and a twisted dream of his finally becomes fulfilled.

It begins with some good old satanic panic-era Dungeons & Dragons and city-wide morbid games of Clue, but the games are about to take a much darker turn. Freshly released from prison, a new and improved ("cured?") Bonin has entered a new city, embraced a new group of friends, and is about to begin his first string of brutal, sexual murders. You will learn fairly quickly that when you enter the death van, you don't leave it alive. This may not be the type of tale you want to discuss over an ice-cold Pepsi.

One of the most vile and disgusting serial killers in American history is on full display as we begin the dark, dark drive down a highway system of terror and death. In part 1 of this horrifying series on the man who will come to be known as "The Freeway Killer", we look at Bonin's questionable early school life, increasingly violent urges, military service, and "extended" stay at Atascadero State Hospital. Not helped by a deadly combination of the gaming of the system and the failure of the system itself, this serial killer soup is slowly but surely turning a man into a monster. This is the beginning of the highway to hell.

William George Jordan was a writer, editor, and speaker.  He recognized the importance of measured approaches to things, to remaining calm in the face of inflammatory things.  He published a book, available online in PDF for free, called The Majesty of Calmness.  In that book, he describes calmness as the ultimate goal and compares it to a Heron's calmness in the face of an attacking Eagle.  Be the Heron, not the Eagle.

Today’s reading was edited and adapted from The Majesty of Calmness by William George Jordan, published in 1900. "During my whole life I have not had twenty-four hours of happiness." So said Prince Otto von Bismarck, one of the greatest statesmen of the nineteenth century. Imagine that! Eighty-three years of wealth, fame, honors, power, influence, prosperity and triumph – years when he held an empire in his fingers – but not one day of happiness! Happiness is the greatest paradox in Nature. It can grow in any soil, live under any condition. It defies environment. It comes from within. It is the revelation of the depths of the inner life, as light and heat proclaim the sun from which they come. Happiness consists not of having, but of being; not of possessing, but of enjoying. It is the warm glow of a heart at peace with itself. A martyr at the stake may have happiness that a king on his throne might envy. We are the creator of our own happiness. It is the aroma of a life lived in harmony with high ideals. For what we have may be dependent on others; what we are rests with us alone. And what we obtain in life is but an acquisition; what we attain is growth.

This week, Angela does a solo episode, the first MFSK (Mother F*cken Serial Killer) of the solo serious. William George Bonin murdered at least 21 boys in the span on a little over a year, probably more in the years before his first "official" murder. He was one of three serial killers around the same time, in around the same area who went by "The Freeway Killer". This episode is largely unedited, so there will be a lot of word stumbling. Deal with it. NEW EPISODE EVERY THURSDAY

Listen to episode 113 of the Inspirational Living podcast: The Majesty of Calmness. Adapted from a book of the same name by William George Jordan. Motivational Podcast Excerpt: Hurry is the deathblow to calmness, to dignity, to poise. Hurry means the breakdown of the nerves. It is the royal road to perpetual worry. Everything that is great in life is the product of slow growth; the newer, and greater, and higher, and nobler the work, the slower is its growth, the surer is its lasting success. Mushrooms attain their full power in a night; oaks require decades. A fad lives its life in a few weeks; a philosophy lives through generations and centuries. If you are sure you are right, do not let the voice of the world, or of friends, or of family swerve you for a moment from your purpose. Accept slow growth if it must be slow, and know the results must come, as you would accept the long, lonely hours of the night — with absolute assurance that the heavy-leaded moments must bring the morning. Let us as individuals banish the word "Hurry" from our lives. Let us care for nothing so much that we would pay honor and self-respect as the price of hurrying it. Let us cultivate calmness, restfulness, poise, kindness — doing our best, bearing all things as bravely as we can; living our life undisturbed by the prosperity of the dishonest or the malice of the envious. Let us not be impatient, chafing at delay, fretting over failure, wearying over results, and weakening under opposition....
