Mark and John discuss the 1987 fantasy epic Masters of the Universe (1987). Directed by Gary Goddard, and starring Dolph Lundgren, Courteney Cox, Frank Langella and a box of chicken, the movie focuses on what happens when a large shirtless man gets teleported to earth. In this episode, they also talk about Final Destination scenarios, Buick Slayers, and the excellence of Frank Langella.
By the power of Grayskull, we're back in Eternia for another He-Man themed episode. Guido and Rob return to one of their favorite childhood films 1987's Masters of the Universe starring Dolph Lundgren before talking about the 2020 semi-sequel to this iconic film from DC Comics and past guest Tim Seeley. In this six part comic, the film version of He-Man return and team up with a would-be Skeletor to battle the Anti-He-Man. Grab your power sword and your headphones and join us. We start things off in 1987 with the MOTU film directed by Gary Goddard, written by David Odell and starring Dolph Lundgren, Frank Langella, and Courtney Cox which holds a big place in both Rob and Guido's mind. Then we talk the DC comics 2020 6-part comic series from past guest Tim Seeley and artists Dan Fraga & Tom Derenick that sees He-Men from throughout the multiverse partner up to defeat a terrifying enemy: Themselves! We wrap up by pondering about the long awaited 2026 Masters of the Universe movie, what we'd want from a true sequel to the 1987 film and more.
This week, Bryan and Dave are joined by Jonny Atkinson of Uy Que Horror to talk He-Man as they take a real deep dive into the movie that drove the final nail into the Cannon Group's coffin, Masters of the Universe. We discuss the movie's enduring status as a cult film against all odds, the intense nostalgia high of a movie that seems to have gotten better with age, the utterly bonkers history of the Cannon Group, a production company that flew too close to the sun, as well as run down the troubling allegations facing the film's director, Gary Goddard.
All hail the Patron Saint of Not A Bomb - Dolph Lundgren! The most reviewed action star on the podcast!Welcome back to another exciting episode of Not A Bomb. This is the podcast where we go back and reexamine some of the biggest bombs in cinematic history and see if they deserve a second chance. On this week's episode, the guys are pleased to welcome back Zo from the Back Look Cinema Podcast to discuss 1987's superhero film - Masters of the Universe. Known as one of the films that bankrupted The Cannon Group, Masters of the Universe was meant to rejuvenate the franchise and increase toy sales. However, the poor critical reception and bad business decisions from Mattel did more damage than Skeletor riding on Panthor through Eternia. The film bombed and the kiddos stopped buying the action figures. Lots of great topics this episode including grown men collecting toys and the best Cannon films of the 80's. Also, why is Frank Langella in Masters of the Universe delivering a Shakespeare quality performance?Timestamps: Intro - (2:35), Box Office Results and Critical Response - (23:50), People Involved - (26:09), Production and Development - (38:25), Commerical Break - (61:06), Masters of the Universe Discussion - (63:38), Is it a Bomb? - (109:48), RoboReviewer1000 - (114:03), Listener Feedback - (118:19), and Outro - (129:10)Masters of the Universe is directed by Gary Goddard and stars Dolph Lundgren, Frank Langella, Courtney Cox, James Tolkan, Christina Pickles, Meg Foster, and Robert Duncan McNeill. Vielen lieben Dank nochmal euch beiden! Episode 34 is here and this week, Liam and Rob will be covering the first movie that Liam ever saw at the cinema. I think we would be hard-pressed to call 1987's, Masters of the Universe a genuinely great movie, but despite some wooden acting and a somewhat limited budget, there remains something rather special about Gary Goddard's first foray in to movie direction. Whether it be the exemplary Castle Greyskull set, Dolph's magnificently feather hair or Frank Langella being, well, absolutely fantastic as Skeletor, Masters of the Universe is a movie that is arguably much more fun than it has any right to be.
In 1987, the cinematic big screen was lit up with the arrival of the Masters of the Universe. Dolph Lundgren stepped into the role of He Man as the team travelled to 20th Century Earth to stop Skeletor from capturing the cosmic key. Join Chris Vint and the team as they provide a commentary on the movie itself. Masters of the Universe (stylized as Masters of the Universe: The Motion Picture) is a 1987 American science fantasy action film directed by Gary Goddard, produced by Yoram Globus and by Menahem Golan and written by David Odell. The film stars Dolph Lundgren, Frank Langella, Jon Cypher, Chelsea Field, Billy Barty, Courteney Cox, Robert Duncan McNeill, and Meg Foster. It is based on the Mattel toy line of the same name and tells the story of two teenagers who meet the mighty He-Man, who arrived on Earth by chance from planet Eternia and now goes on a mission to save the universe from the mighty evil Skeletor, his nemesis. Masters of the Universe was released theatrically in the United States on August 7, 1987. It was a critical and commercial failure, grossing $17 million worldwide against a budget of $22 million, but is now regarded as a classic cult film --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/retrochatpodcast/message

Dolph Lundgren had the power in 1987 when he was He-Man. Masters of the Universe (or Masters of the Universe: The Motion Picture), directed by Gary Goddard, is the science fantasy action film based on the Mattel toy line of the same name. That Film Stew's Luke and Nathan revisit this critical and commercial failure as they immerse themselves in all things Masters of the Universe and He-Man, and discover how this movie became a cult classic. When the evil Skeletor (Frank Langella) finds a mysterious power called the Cosmic Key, he becomes nearly invincible. He-Man (Dolph Lundgren) is summoned to stop Skeletor's plans but is transported to Earth from planet Eternia. There, a waitress named Julie (Courteney Cox) and her boyfriend Kevin (Robert Duncan Mitchell) come across the Cosmic Key and become embroiled in the intergalactic battle between He-Man and Skeletor.
It's a GIANT SIZE SPECIAL! Frank & Matt team up with Conner & Peter from Fix-a-Flick (@flickfix) to take on Cannon Film's 1987 bomb, Masters of the Universe. There's a lot to love (Frank Langella) and hate (Gwildor) about this film, but one thing is for certain: it's fertile ground to pitch a better movie than what kids got back in the day. The Cannon Group took a bath with the failure of MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE in 1987, a film that had gone over budget and well beyond schedule. The film starts off in the mythical land of Eternia, where the ruthless villain Skeletor (Frank Langella) has managed, with the help of a powerful musical cosmic key, to capture Castle Grayskull, the source for a wealth of magic and power in the region. Skeletor has taken the powerful good Sorceress (Christina Pickles) prisoner and has been draining her of her essence to channel into his own, making him more powerful as time goes on. However, the great hero of Eternia, He-Man (Dolph Lundgren), is still free, and with his cronies, the faithful Man-at-War (Jon Cypher) and his daughter Teela (Chelsea Field), he seeks to thwart Skeletor’s plans for dominion over Eternia and restore Castle Grayskull back to its original state. Their plans go awry when the cosmic key’s creator, the dwarven creature known as Gwildor (Billy Barty), opens up a portal to modern Earth with a prototype of the same key for them to escape Skeletor’s clutches. The key is lost on arrival to Earth, soon found by a couple of high school aged teens named Julie (Courteney Cox) and Kevin (Robert Duncan McNeill), who activate it thinking it must be some newfangled musical device. However, using the device alerts Skeletor as to its whereabouts, and once he has pinpointed its location, he sends a band of mercenaries to recover the key and ensnare He-Man, of whom he plans to make an example of in custody to break the will of any would-be heroes left in Eternia.

In part one of a two part podcast, Charles Donelan of the Santa Barbara Independent joins Anna and Maggie to discuss his recent articles about UCSB’s Theatre Program and Gary Goddard.
Compelled is a podcast dedicated to talking about the rape and sexual abuse culture in Hollywood and other industries. We attempt to bring out the bigger issues and what we, as a culture, can do about it. To the young male actors in his retinue in Santa Barbara in the 1970s, Gary Goddard was an exalted figure. A successful former theater prodigy, Goddard returned through his 20s to direct and mentor child actors in his hometown, vowing to bring the most talented with him to Hollywood. He attracted a constant orbit of devoted boys others referred to as the “Goddardites.” But the seemingly idyllic setting of privilege and promise had a dark edge for several members of the theater group. Four decades later, many of them say they have been haunted by their encounters with Goddard. Since actor Anthony Edwards wrote in an online essay last month that Goddard sexually abused him as a pubescent actor in Santa Barbara, seven others from the theater group told the Los Angeles Times that their former mentor molested or attempted to molest them as boys.

On this month's episode, I'm joined by Jeremie Damoiseau, of the Dolph Ultimate website to discuss the second film in Lundgren's filmography -- the 1987 cult classic, Masters of the Universe. Coming off the heels of the wildly popular Rocky IV, Lundgren was an overnight sensation, and the renegade studio, Cannon Films immediately latched onto him as their next potential action star. He was muscular, blonde, and had the necessary look to play '80's toy icon, He-Man in their much anticipated adaptation of the Masters toyline. Funded by Cannon Films and Mattel Toys, Masters of the Universe came and went when it was released in August 1987 and didn't help increase sales in the Masters of the Universe toyline. Yet to this day, Masters of the Universe remains a cherished artifact for many. 30 years later, how does Masters hold up today? What kind of pressure was Lundgren facing while making the film? What kind of problems was Gary Goddard up against? Can the concept of the Masters of the Universe franchise even be translated effectively in film, or is it too out there? What would a potential sequel have looked like? Join Jeremie and I as we attempt to deconstruct this childhood favorite of ours, as well as our gateway into the awesomeness that is Dolph Lundgren! Special thanks to Jeremie Damoiseau for joining me. Please check out his website: dolph-ultimate.com and dolph-forum.com. Also, feel free to check out the latest episode of Marcus Jones' podcast, Jean-Pod Van Damme, where yours truly is featured, and we discuss Universal Soldier: The Return! Also, special shout out to Fesliyan Studios for the show's intro. track.

Disfruten, camaradas.
