Hey guys, This is a special episode that has been on my desk for months to do and finally is here. With September 19th coming soon, we talk about "Talk Like A Pirate" day. We thought who better to be our expert than an expert pirate of the seas right now. We had to do this show via internet and yes, it is longer than our normal shows but trust me...well worth it!!!! Rob Brunner is a Canadian Lieutenant Commander of the Navy. He is also an expert on pirates as he writes a column in a pirate magazine called the Ècho des Mers out of Quebec, Canada. He also is part of the 1000 island pirates society that does re-enactments of the times. He always wanted to be a pirate but joined the navy instead. The drink we will be talking about today is called the Rum Runner cocktail which was based out of Florida at a bar called Holiday Isle Tiki Bar or today known as the Postcard Inn (speakeasy bar). The gentleman who created this cocktail is named John Ebert or “Tiki John” as he wanted to be referred to. This drink has two types of rum, Chambord, Banana Liqueur, some juices and can be blended or built in the glass. Check out our recipes on our recipe page: https://tikicentralcanada.ca/recipes/ The story goes that after prohibition in USA that there was an issue with rum being a surplus in bars (yeah, no way)!! It seemed that if you wanted a bottle of whiskey as an example you had to buy a case of rum as well. This became an issue for this bar and Johnny got to it and created the drink. He named it rum runner after the famous chaps that would transport rum from the Caribbean islands to the American coastline during prohibition. They were called rum runners and the most famous one and who started it all was William "Real" McCoy. No, I didn't make that up. He started with a shipyard and a motor boat service. During Prohibition, he quickly found that bringing rum from the Caribbean islands to USA was profitable. In fact, he first journey made him a cool $15,000 (today equals $200,000). He soon would have a fleet of ships and realized as well the international waters coastline was the way to avoid the authorities. Curious about the fella, we listen in to our story of him..arrrr!!! For "Did you know?" segment: Rob runs us through some cool past and present terms of the navy and even pirates, you see!! This whole episode is covered in cool facts of the sea and the times of piracy. Some cool links for ya!! Rob's Learning the ropes of knots video (must see!!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&v=B4tn1porX-8&feature=youtu.be&fbclid=IwAR39eNuJCH2aemOCbnDZJGp7bQhfh4zg3QU6tSLNWsWdstnfUoL80Qgn5oU The pirate magazine homepage: https://fliphtml5.com/homepage/gybp?fbclid=IwAR0gefXAyFIRE6yS3n93secHViMAOpG01u4ntHxVJyM5XVF4ChMRzvmL8FM Rob's previous navy page on our website: https://tikicentralcanada.ca/navy-terminology/ Previous "Talk Like A Pirate" day episodes on our Episode page: https://tikicentralcanada.ca/episodes/ YouTube video on William "Real" McCoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1aoDosrEus SHOW CORRECTION: I feel bad...ops...Rum runners was not in the started in 40's and 50's but 30's...there you go I feel better now!!!
Happy Tuesday Sippers! With September being Lymphoma Awareness month, the ladies are honored to welcome a very close friend to the show to share her story surrounding her diagnosis with Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
REALTORS® are being targeted more and more over the past ten years. With September being REALTOR® Safety Month, Donny Allen joins Monica on the show today to talk about safety on the job —best practices to keep yourself and your clients safe. Monica and Donny discuss effective ways to help REALTORS® live in confidence, not in fear. Donny grew up on large farms and ranches and had to learn to defend himself from the different animals and also gained a heightened mindset of awareness. When he got started in real estate, he found he had a passion for teaching REALTOR® safety. When you think about safety, it’s not just physical safety; it’s our reputation’s safety and financial safety. Situational awareness is key to the real estate business now more than ever. Some vulnerable situations are meeting clients at unfamiliar properties, sitting in an open house alone, and even issues like cybersecurity. Donny shares safety tips for meeting strangers or new clients. If you don’t know the client, try to meet them at the office first, rather than meeting them at the property. If you’re able, take someone to go along with you. Also, be conscious of what time you are meeting new clients, and arrive early to get a lay of the property. Monica talks about the protocol she uses for herself when meeting clients. It is important to have some sort of consistent system or policy so all potential clients are treated fairly. If you run an office or a brokerage, it is important to have an office policy as well. There also needs to be training around agent safety so everyone is aware and follows the same policy. Donny and Monica talk about the public reaction to some of these safety precautions. For the majority, these safety measures are met with positive response because it protects not only the REALTOR® but also the client. In any situation, it’s important to approach your decision based on your training and experience. Donny shares some statistics on the self-defense weapons REALTORS® carry. If you don’t think you can use a weapon for defense, don’t carry it. Regardless of what philosophy you adopt in your own business, make sure you have a plan for getting out of potentially dangerous situations, and practice that plan so you can execute it should you ever need to. Donny shares some of the statistics on how many agents have experienced safety concerns, whether a physical attack or cyber attack. Thirty-three percent of all REALTORS® have felt uncomfortable in a situation. Monica shares her own experience with this. There are some safety apps you can download to your phone to help keep you safe. It will come down to what is best for you, but some apps Donny recommends are CentraLock, SupraBox. Many smartphones also have an emergency SOS feature. A battery-operated noisemaker that you keep on your person can also be very effective. While these apps and devices are valuable, don’t put all of your comfort in an app. Make sure you have some sort of backup. Donny’s parting thought for agents is to have a plan and practice different scenarios. Take a self-defense class, and always be willing to ask for help or take a buddy. The most important thing is to trust your instincts and increase your situational awareness. Tweetables: “I believe that with good planning, people are aware and prepared and they don’t need to live in fear.” — Monica “That’s exactly what I want to point out. I want to bring your awareness to not only what you’re doing, but what they’re [the client] doing as well.” — Donny “We’ve talked a lot about weapons, but I would always say getting away from the situation is best.” — Donny Guest Links: Donny’s Website Nar.realtor/safety Nar.realtor/safety/56-safety-tips-for-realtors Additional Links: crdpodcast.com Online learning.REALTOR for NAR Online Education Training4RE.com — List of Classroom Courses from NAR and its affiliates CRD@REALTORS.org Host Information: Monica Neubauer Speaker/Podcaster/REALTOR® Monica@MonicaNeubauer.com FuntentionalLiving.com FranklinTNBlog.com Monica's Facebook Page Facebook.com/FranklinMonica Additional Bio: Donny Allen ABR®, CIPS, CL, CLHMS, CRB, CRS, GRI, MGRI, MRE, PMN, SRS, AHWD, e-PRO®, PSA, SFR® Donny Allen is a Broker/Owner and Agent with Keller Williams Realty of Southwest Missouri located in Joplin, MO. With September come football games that actually matter, open season on California tree squirrels (daily limit of four) and the opening of the new artistic season for many North Bay theatre companies. Here’s some of what they have in store for local audiences: Petaluma’s Cinnabar Theater (cinnabartheater.org) transforms itself into Berlin’s Kit Kat Club and bids you willkommen, bienvenue, and welcome to the classic Kander and Ebb musical Cabaret. Broadway veteran Michael McGurk and Petaluma native Alia Beeton take on the roles that won Joel Grey and Liza Minnelli their Oscars. The Spreckels Theatre Company of Rohnert Park (spreckelsonline.com) opens its season with the multi-Tony-Award-winning The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. Fans of the Mark Haddon novel about a young boy on the autism spectrum investigating the death of a neighborhood dog will find that it’s been somewhat reworked for the stage, but Tony voters liked it enough to name it 2015’s Best Play. Sebastopol’s Main Stage West (mainstagewest.com) opens its season with the world premiere of an original comedy by local playwright Bob Duxbury. Savage Wealth examines the impact of the sale of a Lake Tahoe home and the vacant lot next to it on a pair of brothers and their childhood friend. John Shillington directs a cast of three in a story that also manages to work new age philosophy, politics, and romantic betrayal into it. Dancing and singing New York “wiseguys” take over Santa Rosa’s 6th Street Playhouse (6thstreetplayhouse.com) as they present Guys and Dolls. Summer Repertory Theatre Artistic Director James Newman moves to Railroad Square to helm what has been called “the greatest of all American musicals”. Santa Rosa’s Left Edge Theatre (leftedgetheatre.com) continues to provide North Bay audiences with recently written plays never before seen in the area with the U.S. premiere of a hit British comedy. David Simpson’s The Naked Truth involves charity fundraising, female empowerment, and pole dancing. Argo Thompson directs and somehow has worked former Second Row Center host David Templeton into the mix. The Pegasus Theatre Company of Guerneville (pegasustheater.com) will present its 12th annual Tapas: New Short Play Festival. This year’s festival will include seven short plays by Northern California playwrights and will be the first production overseen by new Artistic Director Rich Rubin. Healdsburg’s Raven Players (raventheater.org) open with two contemporary dramas that deal with a host of complex issues including war, PTSD, gun violence, politics and religion. Time Stands Still and Church & State will run in “rep”. In Marin, the Novato Theater Company (novatotheatercompany.org) hopes to have one singular sensation with their production of A Chorus Line, while Mill Valley’s Marin Theatre Company (marintheatre.org) will present the West Coast premiere of the 2017 Best Play Tony-winning political thriller Oslo. Ross Valley Players buck the trend and bring Shakespeare indoors for a change with their production of Twelfth Night. Napa’s Lucky Penny Productions (luckypennynapa.com) invites you Into the Woods, where director James Sasser has apparently added another layer of “fun” to the musical fairy tale mash-up. Plenty of options for the avid theatregoer. Information on all these shows can be found in the “Calendar” section of the North Bay Stage and Screen web site at northbaystageandscreen.com
Experiencing leg pain that doesn't go away? Or perhaps wounds in your legs and feet that heal very slowly? It may have to do with your heart. With September approaching, David Kaplan and Tony Andracki discuss the biggest issues facing the Cubs at the moment, including the health status of guys like Kris Bryant and Brandon Morrow. Is this bullpen good enough to win if Morrow can’t return to health and his dominant form? How good should fans feel about the rotation moving in September and October? What does the trade for a new veteran catcher say about the status of Willson Contreras and Victor Caratini in the final month of the season? Is this team good enough to win a World Series right now?
FOX College Football analyst and co-host of the Petros and Money Show, Petros Papadakis, joins us to preview the college football season. With September upon us, we take a look at the new shows arriving to Netflix next month.
With September 11 approaching, three NJOHSP intelligence analysts discuss what we might see from ISIS, al-Qa’ida, and al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula in the days leading up to the 15th anniversary. Angie Gad, Alyssa Potter, and Jenna Raymond provide an overview of messaging from ISIS and the al-Qa’ida network last year, and then discuss possible audio messages and written publications to coincide with the 15th anniversary. Additionally, they debate who could send messages, keeping in mind ISIS’s second-in-command and spokesman—Abu Muhammad al-Adnani—was allegedly recently killed, and Usama Bin Ladin’s son—Hamza Bin Ladin— issued audio messages in the last year and appears to be preparing for a leadership role within the al-Qa’ida network. They round up the conversation by discussing recent arrests of homegrown violent extremists and the likelihood of a plot on or around September 11.
With September approaching, there is no shortage of advice on back to school tips or ways to get organized for school. Learn how you can keep your family organized during the school season and all year round too.
With September and everyone back in school everyone is back from vacation and we have Reverend Jesse Brown back in the pulpit. Reading from Genesis 1:26-30 Reverend Brown this week talks to us about self worth. What do we need to feel worthy. Is it a complement, is it a man or is it a new car. If these are what cause us to feel worthy maybe we need to revisit that. The love of a man a women or the smell of a new car maybe be fleeting, but the love of Jesus and God is never ending. We need to accept that all we truely need to feel loved is to accept Christ into our hearts. Thanks to everyone listening to our podcast. Please drop us a Note at fbcpreacher@fbcpreacher.com or submit your comments here on the web page about anything you might hear in this ministry. We enjoy hearing your comments about our ministry or anything you might think of to improve this ministry. Again thank you all for listening and have a blessed week from the pastoral and technical staff at First Baptist Church of Chicago.
