What happens when two James Beard Award-caliber talents breathe new life into a 1968 dive bar? Join us for a conversation with acclaimed chef Monique King and legendary bartender Toby Maloney as they take us inside the revival of The Elbow Room, a beloved Vancouver, Washington watering hole they rescued from the brink of disaster. King shares the story of discovering the crumbling space and partnering with Maloney—a friend since their Chicago days in the '90s—to give it new purpose. Maloney reveals his philosophy behind creating an approachable "low touch" cocktail program that delivers incredible complexity with minimal fuss, from the signature Freezer Door Manhattan with its boozy vermouth granita to scratch-made pickled onions. Together, they discuss their mission as "restorationists," preserving what makes a neighborhood haunt special while elevating everything from the grilled cheese to the Tater Tots. Tune in for an inspiring story of friendship, preservation, and the magic that happens when two industry icons prove that a legendary bar can rise again. ● drinkgiffardna.com ● backbarproject.com/portfolio/giffard/west-cup-cocktail-competition ● https://www.instagram.com/drinkgiffardna/ ____________________________________ Join us every Monday as acclaimed bartender, Erick Castro, interviews some of the bar industry's top talents from around the world, including bartenders, distillers & authors. What Can a Cocktail Teach Us About Curiosity and Creativity? At first glance, documenting Negronis around the world might sound like a frivolous hobby. But could a simple cocktail become a vehicle for curiosity, experimentation and creative thinking? On this episode, I speaks with geopolitical strategist Marc A Ross about an unusual passion project: ordering and documenting Negronis wherever he travels. What began as a casual habit has evolved into a magazine-style project called 50 Negronis, capturing cocktails from elegant bars to chaotic airport lounges. Along the way, the project has revealed something deeper about travel, culture and the value of experimentation. But as the conversation unfolds, it becomes clear this episode isn't really about cocktails. Instead it's about how curiosity leads to discovery, why creative side projects matter, and how experimentation can enrich both our professional and personal lives. Curiosity Starts With Small ExperimentsMarc's Negroni project began almost accidentally. While travelling frequently for his work as a geopolitical strategist, he started ordering Negronis and photographing them. What made the idea interesting wasn't a search for the perfect drink.Instead, Marc documented the entire experience — the great cocktails, the mediocre ones, and the truly terrible ones. That curiosity created a lens through which to experience the world differently. Bars became places for conversation, experimentation and discovery, and the project grew into a collection of stories from cities across the globe. Creativity Through PlayA key theme of the conversation is the importance of playfulness. Marc deliberately avoids treating the project too seriously. The photos are simple smartphone snapshots, the documentation is intentionally loose, and the goal isn't perfection. That approach mirrors how many creative projects evolve; by removing the pressure to produce something “definitive,” the project becomes an experiment. And in the process, it becomes easier to create, learn and iterate. Authenticity, Communication and Personality We also explore how side projects can sharpen professional skills. Marc argues that communicators, leaders and even politicians should experiment creatively and share aspects of their personality. Authenticity matters. Whether it's documenting cocktails, running unconventional events, or experimenting with new formats, people connect more with ideas that feel genuine. Sometimes the most powerful way to communicate is simply to follow an idea that genuinely interests you.AI-Generated Timestamped Summary00:00 – A cocktail as a conversation starterIntroduction; why Negronis might seem like an unusual topic for a podcast about human behaviour and yet… 02:00 – Recording in Sundance, UtahMarc describes the Brigadoon gathering and its focus on conversation rather than traditional conference formats. 04:00 – The origins of the NegroniMarc explains the history of the cocktail and why it remains a classic drink. 07:00 – The “50 Negronis” projectA disappointing airport Negroni sparks the idea of documenting the drinks Marc encounters while travelling. 10:00 – Capturing cocktails around the worldMarc explains how he photographs the drinks and records the ingredients when possible. 13:00 – Cocktail culture and experimentationThey discuss how bartenders experiment with ingredients and create new variations. 18:00 – Why the details don't matterThe project becomes less about recipes and more about stories, places and experiences. 22:00 – Learning through experimentationChristian reflects on how creative side projects can help people learn and explore new ideas. 30:00 – Lessons for communicators and politiciansMarc explains why authenticity and personality matter in leadership. 37:00 – Staying curious and having funThe conversation turns to persistence, creativity and the value of pursuing ideas simply because they're interesting. 42:00 – Where to follow Marc's workMarc shares details about Brigadoon events and his geopolitical newsletter. „A bar is a refuge. It's a place where people can be themselves, meet friends, and create memories. And we, bartenders, are ambassadors of human nature,” says Patrick Pistolesi of Drink Kong, ranked 40th on the list of the world's best bars. Through his unique guest shift at Prague's Forbína bar, Patrick created an evening that fused precise technique, inventive cocktails, and a completely authentic atmosphere.Líbí se Vám tento díl? What does it take to resurrect a pre-Prohibition whiskey brand while building one of America's most celebrated cocktail bars? Join us for a deep dive into the business of hospitality with Ryan Maybee, the Kansas City entrepreneur behind the legendary speakeasy Manifesto and the historic revival of J. Rieger & Co. Ryan pulls back the curtain on the operational realities of navigating federal regulators, raising capital for a distillery, and the five-year grind to bring a 100-year-old brand back from the dead. He shares hard-won lessons on partnership structures, the discipline of knowing your numbers, and why creating an entirely new whiskey category required as much business savvy as creative instinct. From surviving the pandemic to building a sprawling distillery campus with a 40-foot slide, Ryan offers an unvarnished look at the entrepreneurial roller coaster. Tune in for a masterclass in calculated risk, brand building, and the long game of leaving a lasting mark on an industry. This episode produced in association with J. Prompted by a recent post from acclaimed bartender Jeffrey Morgenthaler, Adam, Joanna, and Zach discuss whether bartending has tipped too far in the direction of knowledge and information, and away from skill and hospitality. Are so-called "lab bars" creating mind-blowing drinks but not necessarily training bar staff in the kinds of skills that we've typically associated with the trade? Does that style of bar have a bright future, or is it a fad?

What happens when your dream project becomes your darkest hour? Join us for a raw and unflinching conversation with Trevor Frye, renowned bartender, consultant and entrepreneur who watched his lifelong dream of opening his own bar spiral into a psychological and financial nightmare. Trevor holds nothing back as he recounts the cascade of setbacks—from delays and budget mishaps to partnerships fracturing under pressure—that brought him to the brink of ruin. He opens up about the toll it took on his mental health, the isolation and stress, and the moment he had to confront whether walking away meant losing himself entirely. But it's also a story of resilience, offering hard-won lessons on survival, humility, and the slow, painful path back from the edge. What's up everyone and welcome to The Corporate Bartender! If you've been hanging around this bar for a while, you know this has never just been a podcast — it's been a room. A room where HR nerds, L&D folks, consultants, and people leaders, pull up a stool and actually talk about what's going on at work. And today? We're officially kicking off the TCB relaunch!Year Six. New energy. Same soul.We break down what's changing — a more intentional cadence, thoughtfully curated Guest Bartenders, a clearer focus on high-signal conversations — and what is absolutely not changing: the Crew, the candor, and the community-first vibe.We even wrote a TCB Crew Charter. That's right. We put the vibe in writing. And then we opened it up to the room. The conversation was honest, funny, thoughtful — and a really strong reminder that leadership is getting more complex, and nobody wants to figure it out alone.Oh, and don't worry — Last Call is alive and well. Nigel and Nick head to J. Rieger & Co. in Kansas City's east bottoms to sit down with co-founder Ryan Maybee for one of the most remarkable in Kansas City history. Ryan traces how he stumbled onto the forgotten legacy of Jacob Rieger, a 19th-century immigrant who built the largest mail-order whiskey house in the United States, only to be shut down by Prohibition in 1919. A century later, Ryan — then a bartender and bar owner who'd helped spark KC's craft cocktail scene with his underground bar Manifesto — decided to bring it all back. He shares a chance encounter with the last living Rieger descendant and the years developing an authentic pre-Prohibition blend before launching the brand during the Royals' 2014 World Series run with zero employees. Since then, the company has transformed a crumbling east bottoms warehouse into a 10,000-square-foot distillery destination drawing nearly 200,000 guests a year. It's a conversation about history, hospitality, civic pride, and what it actually takes to build something that lasts.

Lindsey Johnson has spent nearly two decades quietly shaping the global drinks industry from behind the scenes. From punk bar bartender to broadcast journalist to founder of the world's first bartender advocacy agency, Lindsey built Lush Life Productions on one simple principle: take care of bartenders and they'll take care of everything else.In this episode, we dive into how she bridges the gap between brands and the bar community, why hospitality professionals should be treated like VIP guests, and the uncomfortable truths about awards, recognition, and what really matters in this industry. In this episode we cover:Lindsey's unconventional path from punk clubs to brand strategistWhy 80% of alcohol purchasing decisions are influenced by bartendersThe founding of Lush Life Productions and 19 years of bartender advocacyWhy brands still misunderstand the power of the barEconomic downturns and why they often lead to smarter brand investmentThe real reason some bartender programs failWhy hospitality must be practiced towards hospitality professionalsWhy awards don't always equal impactSocial responsibility and bars as community safe spacesAdvice for bartenders who want to work with brandsAdvice for small brands trying to grow strategicallyKey TakeawaysIf you want bartenders to champion your brand, feed them, respect them, and invest in them properly.Showing up consistently matters more than chasing visibility.Awards are nice — but mentorship and community-building matter more.Smaller brands win by focusing deeply, not broadly.Hospitality is not a buzzword. It's logistics, care, trust, and follow-through.Connect with Lindsey

What's up everyone and welcome to The Corporate Bartender! If you know SkyeTeam or TCB, you've heard us say it a hundred times - Relationships Matter. You've probably heard of the "no asshole rule" too. We're going to get into that by taking ownership of it. We've got Todd Schuchart on the program today. If you don't know Todd, stick around, he rules. He's a 'certified goofball' (note the squid hat), he's an expert in life insurance sales and lead generation. If you think that might be out of the lane for TCB, you're not wrong, but insurance sales is all about relationships. In building, developing, and deepening relationships - not being an asshole is critical. This conversation was epic. If you are interested in building relationships, and want to laugh a ton, this is the ticket! I laughed out loud SO many times when producing this episode.Oh, and we've got some big changes upcoming to the show, and will be kicking those off on February 4th at 4p MT. Lionel invites listeners into an "underground cult" of guilty pleasures, dissecting everything from bad 1960s puppet shows to the viral lunacy of "Karens" and "sovereign citizens" getting arrested on YouTube. It is a high-energy "Ventilation Friday" session where Lionel explores the bizarre intersection of police bodycam footage, courtroom drama involving unbelievable evidence tapes, and the hypnotic world of unintentional ASMR. Whether he is debating the logic of people who claim they are "traveling" rather than "driving" or recounting his days as a prosecutor, Lionel provides a witty, cynical, and unfiltered look at the "day room" of society. The best (and cheapest) therapy for those small things that get under your skin is sometimes a good venting session so you can get it off your chest and move on with your life! And if you're not privy to the first-hand vent-a-thon, then being a fly on the wall listening is hopefully equally therapeutic and also maybe entertaining. Welcome to Rant Therapy, a podcast short powered by the hosts of the Happy Eating podcast, Brierley Horton and Carolyn Williams, where we periodically share our real-life venting sessions with each other—AKA what we're “so over”. Rant Therapy: Master Bartenders Thank you for listening to Rant Therapy on the Happy Eating Podcast. Tune in weekly on Thursdays for new episodes and new rants on Tuesdays.
