Geopolitics with Ghost Ep. 8: Trump Snubs Bibi, Saudi Nukes, and the Fall of the Israeli Narrative

In a meticulously researched and impassioned episode of Geopolitics with Ghost, Ghost breaks down a seismic geopolitical pivot: Donald Trump is done waiting for Benjamin Netanyahu. Ghost walks through the unraveling of the U.S.-Israel relationship, using historical footage, expert analysis, and a barrage of sourced reports to argue that Trump is now embracing Saudi Arabia, brokering a nuclear deal without Israeli input, and potentially welcoming Iran into a new peace framework. From Trump's planned trip to the Middle East, with zero stops in Israel, to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth canceling his visit, Ghost connects the dots on a series of high-level moves that point to an intentional sidelining of Bibi and the neocon war machine. Huckabee, once a diehard Zionist, even breaks script to echo this shift. Ghost also delivers a hard-hitting exposé on the installation of known terrorist leader Abu Muhammad al-Julani as the Western-backed figurehead in Syria, Macron's shameless normalization efforts, and the broader strategy to Balkanize the Middle East under the guise of peace. As global leaders, including Putin, Xi, and various African revolutionaries, gather in Moscow for Victory Day, Ghost outlines how the sovereign alliance is realigning the global power structure. In one of the boldest predictions of the series yet, he forecasts a Trump-Putin meeting in Riyadh, Iran's unexpected entry into the Abraham Accords, and a coordinated rejection of Israel's Gaza occupation playbook. Candid, cutting, and unflinching, this episode is a masterclass in narrative deconstruction and global power analysis. Don't miss it.

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Times of Israel founding editor David Horovitz joins host Jessica Steinberg for today's episode. Horovitz speaks about recent comments made by Defense Minister Israel Katz about the IDF remaining in Gaza, as a way of reiterating Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's positioning in the current ceasefire negotiations. He also looks at what's being said about a possible hostage deal and a sense of progress on some kind of three-phase deal, no longer conditioned by Hamas on Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, given a clear softening of Hamas' position. Horovitz discusses the latest in Netanyahu's government coalition, which was able to pass budget legislation even when Otzma Yehudit's leader, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir voted against parts of the budget legislation as a show of defiance and disagreement over the judicial overhaul and his desire to fire Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara. He also reviews what's being said by Syrian rebel leader Abu Muhammad al-Julani, and the need to be wary about al-Julani's statements, as a known fighter with a US bounty on his head, even though he speaks about his desire to build a better country. Syria is an unknowable quantity at the moment, says Horovitz. For news updates, please check out The Times of Israel’s ongoing live blog. Discussed articles include: Katz said to tell MKs hostage-truce deal ‘closer than ever,’ echoing Hamas optimism Trump says he’s ‘trying to help very strongly’ to bring hostages home Otzma Yehudit votes against state budget, as coalition splits over bid to fire AG Syrian Islamist leader says rebel groups to be disbanded, minority rights protected Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts. Critical Thinking - Syria: How, Why & What Next? The Black Spy Podcast, Season 18, Episode 0002   The Syrian conflict, which began in 2011 as part of the broader Arab Spring, has evolved into a complex and multifaceted civil war involving numerous domestic and international actors. Initially sparked by protests against President Bashar al-Assad's regime, the conflict quickly escalated into a violent struggle as the government responded with brutal crackdowns. Over the years, the war has drawn in various foreign powers, each with its own interests and agendas. The United States has been involved in the conflict primarily through its support for rebel groups, some radical Islamists and due to its fight against the Islamic State (ISIS). Washington has provided military aid and training to these opposition forces, while also conducting airstrikes against ISIS targets. However, the U.S. has been cautious about overt direct involvement against the Assad regime, focusing instead on counterterrorism efforts. Russia, on the other hand, has been a staunch ally of the Assad government, providing military support that has been crucial in turning the tide of the war in favour of the regime. Since 2015, Russian airstrikes and military advisors have bolstered Assad's forces, allowing them to reclaim significant territory. Russia's involvement is driven by its desire to maintain a foothold in the Middle East and to counter U.S. influence in the region. The United Kingdom has also played primarily a covert role utilising humanitarian aid plus limited military support to opposition groups. The UK has been involved in airstrikes against ISIS and has supported diplomatic efforts to find a political solution to the conflict. However, its influence has been overshadowed by the more direct interventions of the U.S. and Russia. Turkey's involvement is particularly significant due to its concerns over Kurdish groups in northern Syria, which it views as extensions of the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party), a designated terrorist organization. Turkey has conducted military operations against both ISIS and Kurdish forces, seeking to establish a buffer zone along its border. Additionally, Turkey has supported various rebel factions, aiming to counteract both the Assad regime and Kurdish influence. Israel's role in the conflict has been more indirect but nonetheless impactful. Israel has conducted airstrikes against Iranian positions and Hezbollah in Syria, viewing the presence of these groups as a direct threat to its national security. Israel has also provided humanitarian aid to Syrian civilians, but its primary focus remains on countering Iranian influence in the region. So recent development of the fall of Damascus after Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), led by Abu Muhammad al-Jolani, took Idlib changed matters totally adding another layer of complexity to the conflict. HTS, which evolved from the al-Nusra Front, is clearly the dominant force in the region, albeit that HTS is often at odds with other rebel factions in addition to the Assad regime. Al-Jolani has sought to rebrand HTS as a more moderate entity, attempting to gain legitimacy and support from local populations and international actors. The takeover by HTS has raised concerns among the major powers involved. In summary, the Syrian conflict is characterized by a web of alliances and enmities among local and international actors, with the recent developments surrounding HTS and al-Jolani further complicating an already volatile situation. The interplay of U.S., Russian, UK, Turkish, and Israeli interests will still continue to shape the trajectory of this war weary country. On December 8, 2024, Syrian rebels stunned the world when they seized Damascus and toppled the government of Bashar al-Assad, more than 13 years into the country's brutal war.  Spearheading the rebel offensive was Abu Muhammad al-Jolani, the leader of the Syrian militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) — and a man who has been designated a terrorist by the U.S. since 2013. In 2021, FRONTLINE correspondent Martin Smith became the first Western journalist to interview Jolani. Following Assad's fall, Smith sat down with FRONTLINE editor-in-chief and executive producer Raney Aronson-Rath to talk about what he learned from his conversations with Jolani, Jolani's journey from al Qaeda commander to rebel leader seeking a new role in Syria's future, and why he will be “watching to see what Jolani actually does, not what he says” as a new chapter in Syrian history unfolds. Stream The Jihadist, FRONTLINE's 2021 documentary investigating Jolani, his militant group and his ambitions for Syria, on FRONTLINE's website, FRONTLINE's YouTube Channel or the PBS App. Read more of FRONTLINE's coverage of Syria.Want to be notified every time a new podcast episode drops? USA CONDUCTS BOMBING CAMPAIGN IN SYRIA.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Middle East: Celebrations continue in Damascus as the leadership of the nation remains in question. So far, the most likely candidate to emerge on top is the current leader of HTS, Abu Muhammad al-Jawlani. Jawlani is a highly controversial figure who initially rose to power within al-Qaeda before becoming the leader of the “rebel” group which has seized control of the country. Following the fall, both Israel and the United States have carried out extremely significant deliberate targeting campaigns, which largely appear to have the goal of scorching the earth for any group that might come to power throughout what has become a Failed State.AC: Israel also continues their ground invasion from the Golan Heights, increasing their “buffer zone” to an unknown degree. Turkey has also been reported to have invaded the northern districts of Syria, likewise carving out however much of Syria they want for themselves, though at the moment reports are mixed as to how much Turkish forces have advanced beyond their pre-2019 incursion limits.South Korea: Following a vote in Parliament on Saturday, President Yoon has survived his impeachment attempt, and for now will remain the President.AC: Details regarding last-week's martial law escapade have become public following inquiries into the matter. Of note, more soldiers than previously known were activated and ordered to seize critical infrastructure, communications facilities, and various political buildings in Seoul. However, initial investigation has revealed that most of the soldiers deliberately took their time in complying with this order, which had the effect of allowing the Parliament the precious time to conduct a vote to nullify the state of martial law.-HomeFront-New York: Daniel Penny has been found not guilty on all charges. Immediately upon this announcement, demonstrations began, including a large-scale sit-in of Times Square. BLM leadership has directly and openly called for violent attacks to be carried out on Daniel Penny, and has encouraged BLM activists to conduct other attacks as well.USA: Various healthcare and/or insurance providers have sharply increased the security practices of senior leadership in the wake of the murder of UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson. Medica closed their headquarters building “out of an abundance of caution”, and several pharmaceutical companies (such as CVS) have removed all photographs and leadership details from their websites. Many companies have reportedly required employees to sign/agree to some form of morality pledge, or mandated various ethics training sessions. More significantly, many companies have also reported hiring armed security for chief executives.AC: Though the wicked flee when no one pursues, the efforts by companies to protect their leadership are more indicative of their faith in law enforcement, or more accurately their lack of it.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: The U.S. State Department has not commented on what the current standard is for national sovereignty. Currently, one nation in the Middle East has invaded a grand total of three of their neighboring nations, all with active American support. However, in Europe, one nation has invaded one of their neighbors, and the entirety of the United States government has pulled out all of the stops to counter that action. This detail is once again causing questions to be asked that most Americans are not yet ready to accept the answer for. Until that time, when frank discussions can be had without one losing their entire livelihood for asking a question, the status quo will remain.

Jerome Drevon is a Senior Analyst in Jihad and Modern Conflict at the International Crisis Group, where he undertakes research and analysis on Islamist militancy across regions. In episode 41 of Tahrir Podcast, we discussed his most recent book, “From Jihad to Politics: How Syrian Jihadis Embraced Politics,” (Oxford University Press 2024) which looks at why and how jihadis were able to take over the Syrian armed opposition, as well as why these very groups ultimately rejected domination by al-Qaeda (AQ) and the Islamic State (IS) and embraced a different action plan. The book builds on years of impressive field research, including multiple trips to northwest Syria, and interviews with the main leaders of the armed opposition, especially Ahrar al-Sham and Jabhat al-Nusra/Nusra Front–now called Hayatt Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), including an interview with Abu Muhammad al-Jolani. In February, Martin Smith traveled to Idlib, Syria, where he became the first Western journalist to conduct an interview with Abu Muhammad al-Jawlani, a U.S.-designated terrorist and the leader of the jihadi group Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). Once an official branch of al-Qaida under a different name, HTS controls Syria's northwestern Idlib Province, where it has set up a government to manage the affairs of the province's more than 3 million people. Jawlani has distanced himself from al-Qaida and seeks to improve his image in the West, but his terrorist pedigree has proven an obstacle. Will the U.S. ever lift the terrorist designations? Has Jawlani really changed? What's it like to interview one of the major jihadi personalities of the past decade?
