Paxton Smith, the 2021 valedictorian at Lake Highlands High School, submitted to school officials an address on the effect of the media on young minds. But when she spoke at the graduation ceremony on Sunday, May 30, she talked of the theft of her rights and those of her classmates by the “heartbeat bill” signed into law by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott a week and a half before. “I cannot give up this platform to promote complacency and peace when there is a war on my body and a war on my rights. A war on the rights of your mothers, a war on the rights of your sisters, a war on the rights of your daughters. We cannot stay silent,” she told her class. Reframing A Woman's Right To Choose As A Human Right

Language is everything, and how you frame a discussion or issue is critical to how it is conveyed, received and thought about. Since women's rights are obviously human rights, why not frame the right to choose as a human right also? Surely this has already been done. If it has, continuously emphasizing abortion rights as human rights and health care and family issues, and not solely as a woman's issue is critical. If it hasn't, abortion rights groups should start that reframing right now. Omar Moore advocates for the shift in the frame of this vital issue that affects all families and looks at the U.S. Supreme Court ruling this week that struck down a restrictive Louisiana law that put an undue burden on women seeking an abortion. Women, especially Christian women, are walking through life exhausted and need to realize that is not how it should be, says author and speaker Denise George of Birmingham, Alabama.  “There’s no time,” “I have too much to do to rest” and “I feel guilty when I rest” are some of the excuses George hears from women. “They consider taking time for themselves selfish, unspiritual and so unlike the hard-working woman in Proverbs 31,” she said.  On this week’s TAB News, co-hosts Jennifer Rash and Debbie Campbell talk with George about biblical principles of rest and learn tips about how to make simple changes to develop habits that allow for a productive lifestyle that includes rest. On June 4, Busy Philipps actress, author and host of the talk show "Busy Tonight" testified in Congress about her experience having an abortion at the age of 15. The testimony is part of her condemnation of the new extreme abortion restrictions in states like Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, Ohio, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Missouri. During her testimony, Busy also detailed the widespread nature of abortions and the impact these bans would have on women's health. According to Guttmacher Institute, a reproductive health research center, one in four American women will have an abortion before age 45. Today, Busy is asking women who have had abortions to tell their stories as part of a push against anti-abortion legislation being considered and enacted in a number of states. This episode talks about some potentially triggering subject matter. We are constantly asked why there are so few women in magic. The answer is complex and nuanced because it is made up of many different reasons. These are many little things that are keeping women away from magic and many people are likely unaware. In an effort to draw attention to these little things we have posted the hashtag “part of the problem”. One example that has received some attention is the ongoing popularity of sexual explicit images of women used in a recent sting of “porn memes” that has popped up on a comedy forum for magicians. We are proud to be a part of magic right now, when so many are so interested in the support of women in magic and a move towards greater gender equality. If you see something you believe is contributing to the lack of women in the art of magic please use the #partoftheproblem to draw attention to the issue without judgment or disrespect. Most people don’t realize how these little things taken together make a big impact.

Tonight we have with us Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner, the Founding Director of the Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation from Fayetteville, NY discussing Sisters in Spirit:  The Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Influence on Woman's Rights.  Sally is a nationally recognized lecturer, author and performance interpreter of woman's rights history.  She will enlighten us tonight on the traditional Iroquois women and their authority since long before Christopher Columbus came to the Americas. Role models indeed, these Iroquois women had absolute rightss to their own bodies, were economically independent, were responsible for planning their tribe's spiritual ceremonies, had the final say in matters of war and peace and had rights to choose all political representatives.  We'll learn the inspiration for these women's rights of so long ago....and more.  Don't miss this!
