What has hiking in common with World Usability Day and Sustainability? In this episode we were joined by Elizabeth Rosenzweig, the founder and director of the World Usability Day. We spoke about how World Usability Day started, why it has a strong relation with Sustainability from the very beginning and what its relation to World Earth Day is. And why hiking? When you go hiking in the wilderness there is one important rule: leave no trace. The question is, how do we design to leave no trace, to cause no more harm? We discussed how UX and design need to change and how some of our design paradigms need to change and how we can bring this topic to the UN. Further we spoke about why collaboration and cooperation is the topic for this years WUD and even more, why it is an important basis for sustainability. We also discussed mental health as part of sustainability, the rough times for the design communities nowadays in terms of layoffs and how we can navigate through. In the end we got down to the core: the problems of capitalism and narratives that are driven by business people only - but also what we could or should do to work towards more balance here. And we came up with an idea for a global joint workshop of World Usability Day Initiative and the SUX Network we might do in the beginning of 2024. Stay tuned. If you want to learn about how World Usability Day started and why it is strongly connected to Sustainability or how we could and should tackle the big challenges nowadays with and in design and why we need to get the UN involved, tune in to this episode of the SUX podcast. S4E27: "Changing the Standard to 'Nutrition Density' in School Lunch Programs" | Anja Raudabaugh Summary: On this podcast episode of "Seen and Herd," Allison Tristao interviews Anja Raudabaugh, CEO at Western United Dairies. They discuss Senate Bill 348 (SB 348) and its potential impact on the dairy industry and school lunch programs. The bill, authored by Senator Nancy Skinner, aims to increase access to fresh and nutritious local ingredients for school lunch programs. However, the concern is that the bill proposes a 25-gram limit on sugar consumption in school lunches, which could have unintended consequences for dairy products. The CEO highlights that Senator Skinner has been an ally of the dairy industry and has worked to improve school lunch programs. To address concerns about the sugar limit, the CEO and Western United Dairies have partnered with the Dairy Council of California and a nutritionist to offer amendments to the bill. These amendments focus on nutrition density and consider individual students' needs, such as higher calorie requirements for athletes. The legislative session is longer this year, and WUD hopes to avoid a floor fight, which could be challenging for the agriculture industry. They emphasize the importance of not sacrificing one agricultural group over another and advocate for focusing on nutrition density rather than arbitrary limitations. Anja also emphasizes the significance of lobbyists representing the dairy industry's interests without conflicts with other agricultural groups. The CEO aims to ensure that dairy products have a prominent place on school lunch menus. Please subscribe for notifications of future episodes. I have never studied journalism but I vaguely remember one of my high school English teachers telling us that any well-constructed newspaper story would answer basic questions like these:What happened? When did it happen?Where did it happen?Who was involved? How or why did it happen? And so forth. For example, if there was a fire in somebody's kitchen, the story would say something like this:A fire last night destroyed the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Smith on Western Avenue. Firefighters believe the fire started in the basement and spread quickly to the rest of the house. The cause is under investigation but may have involved electrical wiring. So in a few sentences readers learn what happened, when, where, who was involved, and a possible explanation of how the fire started. This podcast will give you some practice with questions and answers using the question words who, what, where, etc.  As with the last podcast, I suggest listening all the way through and then replay and repeat along with me. One final note: listen closely for the contractions typical of rapid speech. The written form of the third sentence, for example is "What did she say?" But the spoken form is "Wud she say?" Have fun! 1. Who told you that?My brother did.2.  Who's knocking on the door?I don't know. I'll go see.3. What did she say?She said she wasn't hungry.4. What time is it?Three thirty.5. Where did they go?I think they went for a walk.6. Where are you from?Canada. How about you?7. When will you leave?Early tomorrow morning.8. When did she arrive?Late last  night.9. Why are you sitting in the dark? The power's off again.10. Why did she eat so much? She said she was famished. 11. How did you get home from work?John gave me a ride.12. How old is your father? He's 78.13. Whose shoes are these?I don't know. Not mine.14. Whose house is that? The big one? That's Mr. Anderson's.Idioms:Let's end with four ways to say you're not accomplishing anything:Joe, you look depressed. What's the matter? Rough day at work?Yeah. I feel like I'm stuck in a rut. Just spinning my wheels and not getting anywhere.Oh I know what that's like.  Goin' around in circles, chasing your own tail. Yep, you got it. I need a change.Intro & Outro Music: La Pompe Du Trompe by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com
