On this doubleheader episode of Authors on the Air, two critically acclaimed authors join us to talk about their most recent novels—with several similarities. A Cold, Cold World, by Elena Taylor, and Tessa Wegert's The Coldest Case feature two of my favorite characters in Bet Rivers and Shana Merchant. Both powerful characters who take on the toughest cases in their law enforcement roles, and who have deep, rich backstories making them irresistible. Both must solve a brutal murder in the middle of winter, cut off from the outside world. In A Cold, Cold World (Taylor) Sheriff Bet Rivers is isolated during a blizzard and help isn't coming to her small town. It also means the killer can't get out, and it has to be someone she knows. The Coldest Case draws Shana Merchant to an isolated frozen island where only the hearty dare to “overwinter.” The murder of an Instagram influencer in this small enclave presents a tight closed-circle mystery where Shana knows the killer walks amongst them.
