In this episode of On Mission, Sarah Harrigan Scalfaro, Chris Pierno, and Fr. Frank Donio, S.A.C. are joined by Fatima Monterrubio Cruess, Resource Coordinator at the Catholic Apostolate Center, discuss Hispanic and Latino Spirituality in the Catholic Church.Fatima demonstrates how the culture and spirituality of Hispanic/Latino populations contributes to the welfare of the Universal Church. She also discusses some best practices for ministering to this community that has many different cultural practices. Fatima shows how within these communities, there are special moments of encounters with one another where individuals share common values and get to know each other more personally. On June 16, 2023, the US bishops approved a National Pastoral Plan for Hispanic/Latino Ministry. The Plan refers to Hispanics/Latinos as a blessing from God, as a missionary and prophetic presence that revitalizes the church in the United States. A few of these graces include an abiding love for family and community, a rich practice of Catholic traditions, an authentic Marian devotion, and vibrant ecclesial movements. For the past four decades, Hispanic/Latino ministry has flourished in thousands of parishes across the country. Such ministries have produced many fruits as millions of Hispanic/Latino families have been able to live and celebrate their Catholic faith. Building on that growth, the Plan calls for a synodal church that is more welcoming, evangelizing, and missionary at all levels; a church that can build vibrant parish communities with our Hispanic/Latino brothers and sisters, in the context of a culturally diverse society. Related Episodes:Dr. Timoney on the Synod on SynodalitySynod on SynodalityParish Faith Formation Resources:USCCB: Hispanic/Latino AffairsNational Pastoral Plan for Hispanic/Latino Ministry Resources From the Ad Infinitum blog:The Fruits of Being BiculturalTricultural Blessings: How My Cultures Have Shaped My FaithDía de Muertos and the Meaning of Christian Death Follow us:The Catholic Apostolate CenterThe Center's podcast websiteInstagramFacebookApple PodcastsSpotify On Mission is produced by the Catholic Apostolate Center. This blogcast explores “The Visitation: A Model for Walking with Women” written and read by Fatima Monterrubio Cruess. In this blog post, Fatima shares how the example of Mary's visitation to her cousin Elizabeth is a way to accompany women in our communities. I invite you to celebrate this feast day by imitating the example of Mary and taking the initiative to reach out to a woman in your community. While this may involve going a bit outside our comfort zone, each of us, no matter where we are in life, can offer this much-needed kinship. We don't have to be in the same boat as a woman in need or know her pain or experience firsthand. We are simply called to walk alongside her, providing support, friendship, and encouragement. Accompaniment does not mean taking on or attempting to fix someone's problems. It means a willingness to listen, to be truly present to another, to offer reassurance, closeness, and compassion.Reaching out to a woman in your community can take many forms, from working to enact systemic change (such as advocating for paid parental leave or working to ensure access to healthcare) to just grabbing a cup of coffee with a mom you know.Other concrete ideas for living out the spirit of the Visitation include offering to babysit, donating to or volunteering with a local pregnancy center, starting or joining a mom's group at your parish, organizing a diaper drive, or making a meal for a family. You may consider getting involved with Walking with Moms in Need, the Church's nationwide initiative that helps Catholics form parish teams to identify resources in their local area and connect pregnant and parenting mothers with support and services. For a woman struggling in her fertility journey, just lending an ear, offering to accompany her to a doctor's appointment, or putting her in touch with someone else who has been there can make a huge difference. In every gesture of closeness, we will find ourselves enriched and accompanied in return. May we strive to emulate authentically the spirit of the Visitation, so that every woman can come to feel the profound embrace of kinship!Author:Fatima Monterrubio Cruess is the Resource Coordinator for the Catholic Apostolate Center. This blogcast explores “Living Sickness in the Presence of God," written by Fatima Monterrubio Cruess and read by Patrick Hyland. “Living Sickness in the Presence of God,” by Fatima Monterrubio Cruess. In her blog post, Fatima describes how there is a temptation in the midst of sickness to fall into despair, anguish, or self-absorption. However, whether it be common colds, Covid-19, or cancer, God offers us the grace, if we are open to that grace, we can turn that suffering into that contributes to the good of the People of God. Fatima draws the inspiration for this reflection from the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul. St. Paul was known originally as Saul and was an opponent of the early Church. He persecuted Jews who believed in Jesus as the savior. Jesus stopped Saul from persecuting Christians and called him to his side, baptizing him with water and later with the blood of martyrdom. The account of the conversion of Saint Paul (Acts 9: 1-5) serves as an inspiration for those who criticize the Church. Through the example of Paul, Jesus touched the heart of the one who persecuted his people and can also touch ours. Links:Click here to learn more about the Conversion of St. Paul.Learn more about other favorite saints. To visit our COVID-19 Resource Page, please click here.Listen to On Mission episodes about suffering, anointing of the sick, mental health, and funerals. Contributors:Fatima Monterrubio Cruess is the Resource Coordinator for the Catholic Apostolate Center. Patrick Hyland is a program associate for the Catholic Apostolate Center where he assists with new and existing resources on the Center's website and contributes to the Center's marketing and consultancy efforts. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Patrick is a junior at The Catholic University of America pursuing a double major in Operations Management and Theology. The Seven Sorrows are: The First is Simeon's prophecy that speaks of a sword that will pierce her heart (see Lk 2:35). The second sorrow is the flight to Egypt to save her Son's life (see Mt 2:13-23). The third sorrow, those three days of anguish when the boy remained in the temple (see Lk 2:41-50). The fourth sorrow, when Our Lady meets Jesus on the way to Calvary (see Jn 19:25). The fifth sorrow of Our Lady is the death of Jesus, seeing her Son there, crucified, naked, dying. The sixth sorrow, Jesus' descent from the cross, dead, when she takes Him in her arms as she held Him in her arms more than thirty years before in Bethlehem. The seventh sorrow is Jesus' burial. Matt Moeller is Resource Coordinator of Interstate Companies, one of Minnesota’s top outdoor maintenance service companies. Matt got started in the industry back when he was 18 years, so he understands the industry and has experienced it from a variety of positions within a company Is the snow plowing industry facing a potential crash? What does this mean for the strong companies that are able to survive the upcoming challenges? Matt and Stan discuss various difficulties facing the snow removal industry, especially on what it takes to find, teach and keep good employees. Matt believes that today’s mindset of instant gratification has made it increasingly difficult to find young people that understand it takes hard work and it takes time to get to that next level. It isn’t instant. You have to love the smell of diesel in the morning and you have to “want it”. In Stan’s experience, he’s found that often a less-experienced, trainable, honest employee is more valuable to your company than a seasoned employee that knows their stuff, but might not be on the same page as you and the rest of your team.

In order to provide better areas to fish and dive and to enhance local fisheries, artificial reefs are being deployed to provide additional hardbottom areas.  These reefs have been created using donated heavy concrete and steel materials like culverts, concrete pilings, light poles, and steel vessels. We also talk lionfish. Why are they a hazard? Recent Developments In December 2012 and January 2013, four barges of light poles donated from Florida Power and Light were deployed to create two reefs.  The first reef, located in 62-foot depths, had a profile of 27 feet, while the second reef, located in 102-foot depths, had a profile of 25 feet.  Post deployment dives on the reefs showed fishes (i.e. triggerfish, black seabass, pelagic baitfish) already utilizing this new habitat. All of these artificial reefs were deployed with the help of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission Artificial Reef Construction Grant.  The reefs help provide destinations for recreational anglers and divers and habitat for over 110 species of fish and numerous invertebrates. To get involved in the volunteer artificial reef monitoring program, report fishing catches on the artificial reefs, please contact Jim Oppenborn, Marine Resource Coordinator, at  oppenbornj@stlucieco.org.
