Anticipations by H. G. Wells audiobook. Wells considered this book one of his most important, a natural follow-up to such works as his Man of the Year Million and The Time Machine. His goal was to get people to think and act in new ways. The book starts with a look at how humans get along socially and how they carry out their business ventures. It then discusses how these elements influence others, such as politics, the world of work, and education. H. G. tried to make clear how the current social order was disintegrating without preparing another to take its place. He then traced the roots of democracy, which in its present state he saw as unworkable. Instead, he proposed a new republic. He also critiqued modern warfare. Learn more about your ad choices. Best remembered today for his incredible output of genre-defining early science fiction novels during the 1890s, for much of his career Herbert George Wells was perhaps better known for other things. From the early 1900s he positioned himself as a man who would predict the future. Cian and Dónal chat about War of The Worlds, When The Sleeper Wakes, Well' ideas about progress and eugenics, and about his amusing meetings with other famous folks from his day - Joseph Conrad, George Orwell, Orson Wells, Charlie Chaplin and even Joseph Stalin. On this episode, Andy and Steve continue their discussion on the show, Year Million.

A deceased daughter who returns as an android. A spouse who uploads her digital self to the cloud to live in a Metaverse with god-like powers. Does it sound far-fetched? Many futurists and sci-fi writers tell us that we as a society are on a collision course with a future where these things will be come a possibility through artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, and digitization of your brain activities, and more. This future holds as many promises as it holds perils. This week, Andy and Steve begin a two-part discussion on a National Geographic documentary that explores these issues.

Year Million is a new series on NatGeo which uses elements of science fiction and actual science to attempt to predict how technology will affect our species one hundred, one thousand, and even one million years in the future. Using modern technological trends, the series makes the argument that in the distant future, humans inevitably become immortal interplanetary cyborgs (seriously--there is actual science behind all of it). The series is a dramatization of the super future, but splices in commentary from experts like Peter Diamandis, Brian Green, and Michio Kaku. We spoke with the series executive producer Dave O'Connor about the weird future that is (potentially) waiting for us. PCMag.com is your ultimate destination for tech reviews and news. With automation a bigger part of our life, what's going to drive the economy in the future? We talk economics, work, and the role of money with executive producer Dave O'Connor of the new National Geographic show Year Million. In our headlines segment, we're joined by David Siegel, CEO of Investopedia, to tells us about lessons learned from their recent Market Madness competition. 5,000 college students participated, and the results AND lessons from the competition, including some of the big names missing from the average portfolio, are interesting. We also talk about annuity sales, which are down a TON since this time last year. What's going on? OG & Joe will talk all things annuity. We also throw out the Haven Life line to Josh, who wonders if he should hire a more active manager for his money, and we answer a letter from a listener who thinks Joe's movie review of a recent film was more than a little off. Of course, that's not all. Doug brings the trivia, mom brings treats, and there are some horrible jokes along the way. Special thanks to SoFi and our newest sponsor M1Finance for sponsoring our show! We couldn't do any of this without the support of these awesome companies.
