The Grammy-winning Japanese jazz composer and pianist Hiromi has always challenged expectations with her music. Now, she and her group Hiromi's Sonicwonder have released a new album, “Out There.” Hiromi joins Tom Power to talk about the record, why ramen is so important to her life and how she kind of became pen pals with the late Canadian jazz legend Oscar Peterson. Plus, she sets up her song “Yes! Ramen!!”
Jetzt beeindruckt sie erst mal mit ihrer neuesten Produktion „Out There“.
On an all-new episode of Discologist, Eduardo and Kevin check in on jazz pianist Gerald Clayton and his latest boundary-pushing release, Ones & Twos; award-winning Japanese pianist Hiromi's collaboration with Sonicwonder on Out There; and, just to prove we're not obsessed with pianos, Dreams On Toast, the latest from rock and roll saviors, The Darkness. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Dave DiCenso began his career in the late 80s on the metal scene in his hometown of Boston. He later studied at the Drummers Collective in New York and went on to enjoy a successful and varied career touring and recording with Steve Morse, Hiromi, John Petrucci, Duran Duran, Josh Groban, and many others. He is the author of several books including Universal Rhythms for Drumset and his most recent, Fluid Fills and Musical Phrasing, and just celebrated the milestone 30 years of teaching at Berklee. In this episode, Dave talks about: Self identifying as a “backbeat” drummer and that being the common thread in all the music he's played Possible reasons for modern drum recordings sounding “safe” How your limitations can actually benefit you and help you define yourself How his teaching approach has evolved over 30 years at Berklee “Mastering the instrument that plays the instrument” i.e. self-mastery Taking a break from performing in an effort to finally address a physical issue that has dogged him his whole career Here's our Patreon Here's our Youtube Here's our Homepage

Welcome to another episode of WorkTape, where we wrap up our retrospective on the eclectic music of 2014. In this final installment, we dive into some standout releases that pushed genre boundaries and left a lasting impression. From the unique grooves of Jungle's debut album to the heartfelt melodies of George Ezra's Wanted on Voyage, we explore how these records defined the year. We also reflect on the experimental sounds of Flying Lotus, the long-due return of the Pixies, and the retro-futuristic vibes of Damon Albarn's Everyday Robots. Join us as we conclude our look at this pivotal year in music.Episode Highlights:What makes Hiromi's "Alive" a standout in contemporary jazz? How did Flying Lotus' "You're Dead!" push the boundaries of experimental hip-hop and neo-soul?Did Lana Del Rey's "Ultraviolence" exceed the expectations set by her breakthrough album? Was Jungle's self-titled debut the definitive representation of 2010s modern funk and disco in indie music? How did George Ezra on Wanted on Voyage set himself apart in the folk-pop scene?Did the Pixies' "Indie Cindy" live up to the legacy of their earlier groundbreaking records?

A collected series of intertwined poetic essays written by acclaimed Japanese poet Hiromi Ito--part nature writing, part travelogue, part existential philosophy. Written between April 2012 and November 2013, Tree Spirits Grass Spirits (Nightboat Books, 2023) adopts a non-linear narrative flow that mimics the growth of plants, and can be read as a companion piece to Ito's beloved poem "Wild Grass on the Riverbank". Rather than the vertiginously violent poetics of the latter, Tree Spirits Grass Spirits serves as what we might call a phyto-autobiography: a recounting of one's life through the logic of flora. Ito's graciously potent and philosophical prose examines immigration, language, gender, care work, and death, all through her close (indeed, at times obsessive) attention to plant life. For a better understanding of this collection and the author, the following books are recommended by translator Dr. Jon Pitt: Hiromi Ito - Wild Grass on the Riverbank Hiromi Ito - The Thorn Puller Robin Wall Kimmerer - Braiding Sweetgrass Hope Jahren - Lab Girl Jeanie Shinozuka - Biotic Borders Banu Subrahmaniam - Ghost Stories for Darwin Learn more about your ad choices.
