Her original plan was to work downtown in the hospitality industry, she has her Associates degree in Business and applied Science with a focus on planning events. As we all know, especially in public safety things don't always go as planned. At the time, nowhere downtown was hiring which turned out to be a blessing in disguise. She was hired on as a telecommunicator to answer non emergent calls, from there she worked her way up to be the recruiter and public educator. When often asked about her job as a recruiter she would tell people that she “hires heroes for a living and nothing is better than that”. Peggyrose's drive for public safety comes from her family, a long line of firefighters. Her grandfather one of the youngest Fire Chiefs in the state of New Jersey, her father a previous Captain for their local department, her uncle a member of FDNY and her husband is currently a Captain at James Island Fire Department. “Growing up in the Public Safety environment inspired me to always want to better my community.” Now in her new role Peggyrose is excited to showcase all the different departments under the umbrella of The Department of Public Safety. This includes The Charleston County Consolidated Emergency Communications Center (9-1-1), Charleston County Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Awendaw-McClenville Fire Department, Charleston County Emergency Management, Charleston County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council and The Tri-County Biological Science Center. “I love when I get to go out and talk about the resources and job opportunities available, that one conversation could change someone's life, whether it be a career opportunity or one of the resources helped them when they needed it most.” In her spare time Peggyrose enjoys hanging out at the beach with family and friends. She is also one of those people who always has a book in hand, constantly wanting to learn more. “One of my favorite quotes is by Jacqueline Kennedy, 'One man can make a difference and every man should try'. That is what public safety is all about, making a difference for the community.”

You can hear one of Jermel and Mike's earliest conversations right here on the 3RIPLE 3HREAT podcast! We had no idea at the time such great things would come from our meeting, but we aren't surprised given the importance COMMUNITY plays in both our lives. Mike moved to Beaufort, South Carolina in the 7th grade. Mike's dad is a marine and Mike grew up in Laurel Bay Military Housing. "In military communities, it was really important for the parents and the kids to be involved in youth sports."  Just like us, you've probably seen commercials for the Mike Hostilo Law Firm around town. But did you know, Mike was a student-athlete in high school.  Attorney Mike Hostilo is an excellent example of a former student-athlete pivoting into an extremely successful career off the field. The PIVOT is a power position in basketball. If you're in the pivot, you're in the 3RIPLE 3HREAT. You have three choices: pass, dribble or shoot. In basketball, you have seconds to make this position. In life, you have a little more time to come to a decision. Most middle and high school student-athletes do not go on to become professional athletes. Listen to Mike Hostilo's story to learn when he pivoted from athletic dreams to professional dreams and how he utilized the skills he learned on the field to grow a successful law firm. In 2022, the 3RIPLE 3HREAT podcast is going in a different direction with a focus on psychology. To this day, Jermel is grateful for the relationship they developed. They are currently working on projects for the DAE Foundation to expand our services across the country. So many times this game can bring different people together. If you have problems, just play basketball! Here is a little about Coach E: “Mel, I am a native of Owego, NY. I attended Owego Free Academy (where I currently teach and coach) and then Geneseo State University (D3) where I played all four years. The three-point line helped out my career - we finally got it in 1987, my senior year. After a brief career in radio, I went to Northern Ireland where I played two seasons professionally. That experience completely changed the arc of my life - people, culture, confidence, etc. I went to Texas in 1992 - coached at a public school for one year and then moved on to Marine Military Academy (a prep school in Harlingen, TX) where I coached and taught English for three years. This was also a unique and profound experience. I landed the College of Charleston job in 1996. The timing was obviously pretty good! I thought I knew a lot about basketball before I got to CofC, but quickly realized I knew nothing. Coach Kresse was a basketball savant, in my opinion. Additionally, what I learned from you, Sedric, AJ, Thad, DJ, etc will be part of me forever - the life lessons, the competitive drive, etc.”

On Episode 20 of the 3RIPLE 3HREAT podcast we interview Jermel's good friend Dr. Charles Michael Bowman, PhD, MD.   Dr. Bowman and Jermel met through the DAE Foundation and MUSC programs with elementary schools in the lowcountry. They kept in touch and remain working together to educate the Charleston community.   Being around the sport for over 30 plus years, Jermel has seen a lot of issues with friends and teammates when it comes to asthma and performance. Enhancing your knowledge about asthma may help you prevent, monitor and increase your overall performance.   On Episode 20 of the 3RIPLE 3HREAT podcast, Dr. Bowman shares some do's and dont's you should know as an athlete.   “As a pediatric pulmonologist, now retired from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) with the rank of Professor Emeritus, I have truly enjoyed my opportunity to focus more on efforts to improve the management of asthma locally and nationally, especially in serving the underserved communities. I have been particularly interested in addressing asthma care in the underserved, and have spoken on that topic at national conferences. In addition, for three years prior to my retirement from MUSC in 2016, I was an active member of the Health Literacy Action Team, trying to teach doctors in training how to effectively communicate with their patients from all backgrounds. I was also an enthusiastic member of the “Docs Adopt” program linking doctors with schools in the Charleston area supporting school nurses in their care of their students with attendance at health fairs and PTA meetings. Now a member of the BOD of the Allergy & Asthma Network (AAN), I have been active in promoting efforts to address racial inequities related to asthma on a national level. That has included educational efforts related to Covid-19 as well as the newly-developed vaccines for this virus. I am a member of the SC Pandemic Healthcare Ethics Advisory Council, addressing issues of equity in allocation of scarce resources related to treatment and prevention of Covid-19.”   The DAE Foundation focus is to bring quality information to STUDENT-ATHLETES, PARENTS of student athletes and THE COMMUNITY that supports them both. There is a wealth of knowledge being shared in our 3RIPLE 3HREAT interviews. The stories are from former COLLEGIATE PLAYERS, PROFESSIONAL PLAYERS, COLLEGIATE/HIGH SCHOOL COACHES, SPORT AGENTS and the list goes on.
