Confronting Our Mortality Part 1: We Are All Going To Die, So Let's Learn About It

My life's research on the topics of Human Development and Human Potential culminated in the above framework. It has been nationally recognized for its simplicity and providing a structure for those aspiring to become their full potential. The 3 stages of growth are outlined in the above image. This was the topic of my initial podcasts, providing an overview of the stages to becoming our full potential. We initially come to understand our personality and identify those aspects of self that need to be addressed so that we can survive and then thrive with the everyday roles and responsibilities we have in life. This is the 1st stage of "Personal Growth". The 2nd stage, "Self-Discovery", allows us to take that hard look in the mirror to question who we want to be in this life, along with our beliefs and values that we want to stand for. The 3rd stage, for those called to understand the deeper meaning of life and beyond, and how they fit in, is the 3rd stage of growth, "Enlightenment" or "Self-Transcendence". This podcast is a great follow to my recent series on retirement, which is the stage where we more actively confront death and our own mortality. Here we confront our mortality, an essential ingredient to remind ourselves that time is our precious resource that will indeed run out and becomes our motivation to strive to be all we can be. Only a handful out of every hundred or so individuals muster up the courage and drive to enter the 3rd stage of development. However, everyone will enter this stage as we confront the end of our life, our death. This was captured well in Elisabeth Kübler-Ross' book, "Death: The Final Stage of Growth". Unfortunately our societal attitude towards death is largely avoidance, which limits the most amazing growth opportunity for those dying along with their friends and family. According to Psychology Today: "Whether we like it or not one of the only sure fire things in life is that we are all going die. It is one of the subjects that we in the West are discomforted by, embarrassed about and that many of us avoid and this includes avoiding the people who are experiencing grief or who are dying. We don't talk about death. We talk about sex, drugs and money. We teach our children about these subjects but we don't talk about death and dying. Death was so common in the 19th century that it was readily addressed. People wore black if they were in mourning and were treated accordingly. If people were dying they planned their funerals with their family and everyone knew to express their condolences if they came across someone who was bereaved. It seems we've got out of the habit and the subject has become taboo." https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/handy-hints-for-humans/201703/we-need-to-talk-about-death Is this a key reason that we find so few enlightened individuals here in the US as compared to places like India, where death is not hidden, but instead revered and celebrated? What is the benefit you ask to be talking about death? That we accept it as a part of life and come to understand it so that we can better deal with these times with our loved ones and ultimately our own demise. And with the resources available to us today on this topic, we can find peace, comfort, and even an understanding of death so that we are no longer afraid. This is the ultimate growth we can experience as a part of the Enlightenment stage! I experienced death at a young age when my mother died from cancer when I was only 14. No one helped me to deal with this traumatic ordeal at such a young age. I returned to school only to experience everyone avoiding me. I felt lost and confused. It was an incredibly lonely experience. Years later I was drawn to volunteer opportunities that all shared death in common. I volunteered at a children's oncology camp, as an Emergency Medical Technician on a volunteer ambulance, overseas in areas where mortality rates were very high, and in the most profound experience in all, as a hospice care provider. Another profound opportunity to learn about death came from a close friend being crushed under his truck and pronounced dead on the scene, only to revive once he arrived at the hospital and having a most incredible near-death experience. I began to learn about death from multiple perspectives which healed the pain from my childhood experience and mostly, gave me peace and comfort about death and my own mortality. I wish that everyone could share these experiences and conclusions! Otherwise, our fear of death and our mortality has a profound impact on our life and can hold us back from fully experiencing life and becoming our own full potential. Confronting death can have this profound motivation. In this podcast, I expand on these experiences and what I learned. This will set the stage to begin conversation about death and our mortality from various perspectives to hopefully help you to reconsider death and open yourself to more conversation about the death of others and considering your own mortality!! With love, Michael

Curious about when or how women use CBD to their best advantage? I've been using CBD off and on for about 6 years. I originally began after being gifted some products that then loved so much I shared with my mom for her lower back. I've used rubs and lotions for recovering from training rides and runs during triathlon training.  But I think there are now several indications as well as formats for using CBD that may make your head spin if you're new to it. So this episode is designed to help clarify as well as to know what's the difference between all the products you see available just everywhere now? What's quality vs not really supportive at all?  But… there is SO MUCH more in this episode. Get to know your hormones better in the next 40 minutes. Why You Should Listen:  In this episode, you will learn about the root causes of CIRS including Actinos and endotoxins. About My Guests: My guest for this episode is Dr. Eric Dorninger.  Eric Dorninger ND, LAc is a Registered Naturopathic Doctor and Licensed Acupuncturist. He graduated from Bastyr University, the leading accredited university for science-based natural medicine.  Prior to medical school, he received his B.A. in Kinesiology from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1997. During this time he also finished his E.M.T. (Emergency Medical Technician) training and volunteered at Porter Care Hospice in Denver. This dual exposure of medical perspectives laid down the roots for Dr. Dorninger's integrated approach to diagnosis, treatment, and healing.  Following undergrad, Dr. Dorninger served as an EMT for the Cranford First Aid Squad in Cranford, NJ. He then completed his doctorate in naturopathic medicine and his master's degree in acupuncture at Bastyr University in 2003, after which he returned to Boulder, Colorado to complete a 2-year residency in naturopathic primary care.  In 2005, Dr. Dorninger founded Roots and Branches Integrative Health Care, a clinic dedicated to “Mystery Illness” where he focuses on elucidating the underlying causes of unrelenting chronic illness.  Dr. Dorninger is not concerned with what you have as much as he is with why you have it. He has dedicated his professional life to a deeper understanding of differential diagnosis based in the tradition of “Remove Obstacles to Cure.”  After the 2013 floods in Boulder, Dr. Dorninger noticed that patients who were initially getting better suddenly regressed. Moreover, patients he was struggling to diagnose got worse.  Fortunately, he was guided to the honest, data-driven, peer-reviewed, reproducible published work of Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker on mold and biotoxin illness. In 2014 Dr. Dorninger signed on for his Shoemaker certification training.  Dr. Dorninger is a certified Shoemaker practitioner and remains true to the Shoemaker protocol.  According to Dorninger, diagnosing underlying causes and facilitating accurate treatment plans is a grind. At Roots and Branches, we embrace the grind.  In addition to private practice, Dr. Dorninger teaches functional medicine for Apex Energetics, practices Jiu-Jitsu, skis, and enjoys watching his biotoxin-genetically susceptible kids thrive post chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS) treatment. Key Takeaways: What are the root causes of CIRS? What is the difference between endotoxins and lipopolysaccharides? Do Actinos or endotoxins trigger MCAS? Should Actino and endotoxin testing always be done along with the ERMI? Is there still a place for HLA-DR? What has GENIE revealed about patients with CIRS? How should Actino and endotoxin testing be evaluated? Are soil habitat Actinos a contributor to CIRS? What is the role of Actinos on the skin? What drainpipe maintenance should be considered to reduce exposure to Actinos? What steps should be taken to optimize our sleep location? Do air filters play a role in reducing Actinos and endotoxins? What is the role of Cholestyramine in dealing with Actinos and endotoxins? Can Actinos be found in the blood? Might there be a place for antimicrobial interventions in dealing with Actinos? This week I was fortunate enough to sit down with Eric Hofestein, the brother of a former co-worker of mine, Adam. Eric spent the majority of his career out in Cali, and unfortunately had the typical career of seeing much death and despair, sometimes reaching too close for comfort. Wanting a change of pace and  exposure, Eric transferred to the San Francisco Bay area Transit Police Department. This change in assignment gave Eric a front row seat into the lives of the homeless, mentally ill, and addicted. Eric and I discuss the problems of the aforementioned but more importantly the solutions that he developed to address this problem that is only getting worse. Sit back and give this episode a listen and come a way with a different perspective on the people  in this community that we have thrown away. Until next week, take care of yourself and each other, God Bless, Johnhttps://www.amazon.com/What-Doesnt-Kill-You-Homelessness/dp/B0BSJ77FK7More Info on Eric:I retired as a police officer/deputy sheriff with 27 years of laws enforcement experience in bay area of Northern California, after working as an Emergency Medical Technician in Santa Cruz California. After surviving several close calls with death during my career, I witnessed the death of a CHP officer on a freeway in my jurisdiction. Traditional patrol work lost its appeal to me after this incident, and I transferred to the San Francisco Bay Area Transit Police Department to wind down my career for retirement in transit policing. Working in San Francisco exposed me to a world of homelessness, mental illness, and addiction in a way I had never seen before. There were over 8,000 homeless crammed into 49 square miles of the iconic city by the bay. Many of them traversing the city and adjacent regions via the BART trains exposing me to the subculture of life on the streets and the effects of addiction in a major city and its transit systems. In my outreach work on and off duty I met many lost souls languishing, suffering, seeking connection to their lost humanity as I struggled to mitigate their conditions. Now in retirement I want to give a voice to the voiceless in the hope of appealing to others to also take up the mantle of outreach work and generate realistic constructive dialogue to address these issues. This book is meant to speak to the power of a spirituality that binds us all as a social species. We have an inherent obligation to help others following our moral compass with compassion and empathy to help others, and if we can't help them, at least "see them." That request came from many of the people I helped who want the world to know at least that one thing, see them.Thank you for taking the time to give this podcast a listen. Welcome back to the 3RIPLE 3HREAT podcast where it's good news and good vibes all the time, baby! They discuss the importance of leadership, and different resources the community has access to following natural disaster moments like hurricanes, tropical storms, earthquakes, tornadoes, etc, and man-made disasters and acts of violence. We appreciate Ben coming on and giving us the information we need to be effective following a natural disaster. Please tune in to this episode to learn more! About Ben Webster: Ben's passion for public service and public safety began very early when he joined the Boy Scouts of America in Virginia's New River Valley. Servant leadership, honesty, integrity, and helping others became engrained in his daily life. So much so, that after completing his Eagle Scout and several other national level awards, he went to join the Blacksburg Rescue Squad as an Emergency Medical Technician. At Blacksburg, Ben solidified that his career would be in public safety and emergency services. Among many other positions, he served as a Field Supervisor, Heavy Rescue Technician, Public Safety Diver, Swiftwater Rescue Technician, and finally leaving as Captain of the Water Rescue Team.  Ben's desire to serve went further, after graduating from Radford University he became a Police Officer with the City of Charleston Police Department. Following this, he accepted a position as a Regional Emergency Manager for the South Carolina Emergency Management Division. During this time he was instrumental in assisting both very large and resourceful counties and smaller rural counties in developing quality emergency management programs. He also served on the Unified Command Group of the Federal Governments' COVID19 Vaccination Response at the Columbia Place Mall. In addition to this, Ben responded to multiple tornados and other emergencies throughout the state. He earned many certifications, but most notably FEMA's Advanced Public Information Officer.  In May 2022 he was selected to serve in his current role as Deputy Director. This position meshed perfectly with his experience in Emergency Management, Emergency Services, and desire to serve and educate the community. Ben prides himself on his forward-thinking style, and desire to always look for a responsible and reasonable solution to any problem.  Ben and his wife Emma reside in Charleston County with their two rescue dogs, Moose and Marina. They are both professional SCUBA Divers, Ben a Master SCUBA Diver Trainer and Emma a Divemaster. They are all around outdoor enthusiasts and spend many weekends exploring the outdoors throughout the region. On this episode of Passive Income Pilots, Tait and Ryan interview Austin “Strobes” Hulbert.Austin was born into an aviation family and naturally gravitated toward becoming a pilot himself.  He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2005 and immediately moved onto obtaining his M.A. in Security Studies from Georgetown nine months later. He then attended flight school for two years and eventually landed in Virginia Beach, where he became an F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet pilot, completed a deployment on the USS Enterprise, and then became a flight instructor, all while spending his free time volunteering as an Emergency Medical Technician to give back to those who assisted him during the recovery of a tragic family vehicle accident during college.Once Austin ended his active duty tour in 2015, he went on to Harvard for “something different and new” and obtained his M.B.A. He then worked for a couple financial companies before starting his own business, Talos Company, which aims to find, acquire, and expand a high-potential business started by an owner who wants to move away from or retire from the business with a solid legacy. He has experienced and achieved so much in his lifetime and aspires to do even more than he has already accomplished. In this episode, Austin shares how his past family tragedy as a young man shaped his perception of life and propelled him into becoming an accomplished human being who takes nothing for granted and lives life to the fullest. He teaches us how being disciplined and having small mindset shifts can build success and positive reinforcement across all areas of our lives. His biggest piece of financial advice is to stick to the basics, be knowledgeable about how your portfolio is performing, and work with those who have your best interest in mind.  Austin is truly an inspiration to the flying community.Enjoy the show!Show notes:[00:21] Intro[02:00] Tait and Ryan provide clarity on terminology used in the interview[04:10] Austin's background[07:00] What is life like on an aircraft carrier?[11:53] What Austin misses about living on an aircraft carrier[13:05] What would he never do again[14:20] Flying story as an instructor[17:36] The Good Friday Miracle[19:51] A transformative time in Austin's life and what got him through it[26:40] How Austin started his financial literacy journey[31:39] What it means wheLegal DisclaimerThe content of this podcast is provided solely for educational and informational purposes. Ric suggests diversity so you can bid for more roles and look at security from a wider point of view. Aside from the reactive skills, Ric challenges agents to know how to plan for security especially when firearms are not involved.GOLDEN NUGGETSTrain on preventive skills instead of just reactive skills - Ric: "You start learning the medical side, you've learned a good skill there, but if you look it another way, you've now trained yourself to look at how to prevent some things that may happen as well. So if you're only the hallway guy, the driver, and the shooter, if you will, the EMT-trained guy looks at things a little bit differently. He also looks at the same things you do, but he's adding a broad way to look at those. If you become a security risk assessor, same thing."Expand knowledge to become valuable to different security departments - Ric: "Executive protection really is only one skillset or one avenue of what the entire corporate security structure is. So, you mentioned as a former chief security officer, so our programs spanned a large number of jobs. We owned aviation companies, we owned maritime companies, logistical trucking companies, warehousing, and so that's corporate security. And executive protection was only a small part of that." Get to know more about Ric:LinkedInTo hear more episodes of The Fearless Mindset podcast, you can go to https://the-fearless-mindset.simplecast.com/ or listen to major podcasting platforms such as Apple, Google Podcasts, Spotify, etc. You can also subscribe to the Fearless Mindset YouTube Channel to watch episodes on video.
