    Soft Leadership

Guy and Michelle explore the concept of "soft leadership" - not about being soft, but about being more considerate and collaborative. They discuss how this approach, while sometimes seen as less efficient, often yields better results and stronger relationships.Key Discussion Points:- Indra Nooyi's (former PepsiCo CEO) journey from a blunt leadership style to a more collaborative approach- The difference between leadership in structured environments (like aviation) vs everyday situations- Why collaboration beats dictatorial management in modern leadership- The power of self-assessment over traditional feedbackNotable Example:Indra Nooyi's experience at PepsiCo, where she was advised to "be careful about throwing hand grenades" and instead adopt a more collaborative questioning approach.Practical Leadership Techniques:1. Building Trust Over Time- Start collaborative to build trust- Direct commands become more effective once trust is established- Relationship building enables occasional directness when needed2. Coaching vs Mentoring Approach:- Coaching: Asking questions to help people find their own answers- Mentoring: Sharing knowledge only after identifying knowledge gaps- Using "Would it be worth considering..." instead of giving direct orders3. Self-Assessment Model:Key questions to ask:- "How are you going with this?"- "What's working well?"- "Would you change anything?"Real-World Applications:- Parenting example: Breaking down overwhelming tasks (like cleaning a room) into manageable steps- Workplace scenario: Building long-term trust enables occasional direct instructions- Training context: Helping people develop self-awareness and assessment skillsKey Quote:"Soft leadership isn't soft - it's collaborative and gives people agency."Takeaway Message:The episode emphasises that effective leadership isn't about being "soft" - it's about creating psychological safety, building trust, and empowering others to think for themselves. This approach might take more time initially but leads to better outcomes and stronger relationships.

In this episode, Guy and Michelle explore discipline from a fresh perspective - not through the lens of military-style discipline advocated by ex-Navy SEALs, but as an act of self-love and care for your future self.Key Discussion Points:- How early experiences in sports and performing arts (Guy in the Flying Fruit Fly Circus, Michelle in the Marching Koalas) helped build discipline through commitment to others- Why discipline equals freedom and how it helps avoid the "slavery" of negative consequences- The power of creating rules instead of setting goals- How discipline is ultimately an act of love for your future selfPractical Examples of How Discipline Creates Freedom:- Completing tasks early prevents the stress of the "urgency trap"- Healthy eating habits free you from health issues and yo-yo dieting- Regular exercise builds strength and long-term vitality- Consistent quality time with loved ones prevents relationship breakdown- Maintaining friendships prevents future lonelinessKey Concept - Rules vs Goals:Instead of setting distant goals, create immediate rules:- "I have a cold shower every morning"- "I eat things that grow and live"- "I exercise first thing"- "I have one glass of wine"Memorable Quote:"Discipline is like getting in a time machine, going forward 10, 20, 30, 40 years, and giving that future version of yourself a hug saying, 'Hey, I've got you, mate.'"Practical Takeaway:Visualise your future self and consider how today's disciplined actions will benefit them. Rather than viewing discipline as restriction, see it as a gift to your future self - whether that's better health, stronger relationships, or greater freedom from stress.Building discipline isn't about perfection or military-style rigour, but about consistently making choices that benefit your future self while creating rules that serve you in the present.

Episode Overview:In this episode, Guy and Michelle explore the concept of "accurate thinking with a positive bent" rather than just positive thinking, sparked by insights from Dr. Daniel Amen's interview on The Diary of a CEO podcast.Key Discussion Points:- The evolution of positive thinking from the 70s/80s self-help movement to present day- Scientific evidence of how negative thoughts physically affect brain structure- The connection between negative thinking and athletic performance/coordination- Why traditional positive thinking sometimes faces resistance- The power of accurate thinking with a positive bentNotable Research Discussion:Guy shares fascinating research from Dr. Daniel Amen about brain scans showing physical changes when someone engages in negative self-talk, particularly affecting:- Left temporal lobe- Left frontal lobe- Cerebellum (potentially explaining coordination issues during negative states)Practical Applications:- How to improve memory by changing negative self-talk- The importance of believable, accurate statements rather than unrealistic positive affirmations- Ways to observe and manage thoughts through meditation- The value of surrounding yourself with supportive peopleKey Quote:"It's not positive thinking. It's accurate thinking with a positive bent." - Dr. Daniel AmenExample of Accurate Thinking vs. Positive Thinking:Instead of saying "I'm bad at remembering names" or unrealistically claiming "I'm brilliant at names," try:"I used to struggle with names, but I'm getting better because I'm practicing and using techniques."Mentioned in this Episode:- The Diary of a CEO podcast with Stephen Bartlett- Dr. Daniel Amen's brain research- The Power of Appreciation by Noelle Nelson- Eckhart Tolle's cloud metaphor for thoughtsThe episode emphasises the importance of combining accuracy with optimism when working on self-improvement, rather than relying on unrealistic positive affirmations.

In this episode, we welcomed John Davison, whose remarkable journey from commercial aviation to pioneering drone technology exemplifies the power of innovative thinking and adaptability. As a former colleague of Michelle, John brought not only his wealth of experience but also his infectious enthusiasm for pushing boundaries.Always willing to pass on key learnings, John told us two riveting tales from his aviation days. The first, a masterclass in negotiation during a critical low-fuel situation, demonstrated the split-second decision-making skills required in commercial aviation. The second story, involving a Melbourne-bound flight from Bali with non-functional toilets, illustrated the delicate balance between determination and practical decision-making in aviation leadership.John shared his transition into the world of drone technology, where he has become a pivotal figure in transforming Australian agriculture. His work has profoundly impacted the lives of numerous farmers, including a 75-year-old farmer who found renewed purpose and extended his working life through drone technology. Another touching success story involved an 80-year-old farmer who, with John's guidance, successfully protected her property from poachers using drone surveillance.John revealed how his ADHD, diagnosed later in life, became his greatest asset. "My mind works differently," he explained, describing how this perspective enables him to develop innovative solutions that others might overlook. His experience with ADHD shaped his approach to learning and problem-solving, leading to groundbreaking applications in drone technology, including sophisticated methods for tracking feral pigs and revolutionary approaches to weed control.John described the challenges of pursuing education without understanding why traditional learning methods proved so difficult. His "superpower of stubbornness," as he termed it, became his saving grace, pushing him through obstacles that might have deterred others. The impact of proper diagnosis and medication transformed his relationship with reading and studying, activities he previously struggled with, while also resolving unexpected challenges like binge eating patterns.Government recognition of his innovative work has led to an enviable position where, as John humorously puts it, he was "paid to camp and fly drones." This achievement underscores how his unique problem-solving approach has contributed to advancing agricultural technology in Australia.John's journey illustrates the remarkable possibilities that emerge when we embrace our unique perspectives and challenges. His story reinforces that what society might view as limitations often become the very qualities that drive innovation and success. From the cockpit to drone controls, from struggling student to innovative problem-solver, John Davison's narrative inspires us to reconsider our own perceived limitations and their potential as catalysts for change. This episode reminds us that the path to innovation isn't always linear, and our greatest challenges might actually be our most valuable assets. John's experiences demonstrate how embracing our unique ways of thinking and approaching problems can lead to transformative solutions that benefit entire communities. If you're interested in what John and his team do, please reach out through https://www.fieldmastersystems.comEnjoy!

In this episode. we explore the delicate art of managing our most precious resource - our vitality. We explore the moments when inspiration arrives, those valuable bursts of creativity that emerge unexpectedly. While these moments should be embraced fully, we challenged the conventional wisdom that we perform better under pressure. Although deadlines might generate a particular kind of energy, we questioned its sustainability. Our discussion evolved into an examination of the different types of energy we possess. We conceptualised this as distinct varieties of mental resources - one for social engagement and another for concentrated work. Although circumstances don't always permit us to choose which type we need, understanding these distinctions enables more informed decisions when choice is possible.Did you know, Albert Einstein developed a method of napping with keys positioned above a saucepan. As he would begin to sleep, the keys would fall, waking him at the precise moment his creativity was heightened.Michelle shares her experiences with nocturnal creativity - when inspiration presents itself at 2am. This prompted an exploration of chronotypes and peak performance periods, though we acknowledged that not everyone has the opportunity to align with their natural rhythms. We explore how pilots maintain their energy levels when their circadian rhythms face regular disruption utilising the science of adenosine and the strategic implementation of 20-minute caffeine naps. There is profound value in observing these quieter moments, allowing them to inform our self-understanding, and maintaining faith in the cyclical nature of energy. The essential message from this episode centres on understanding that energy isn't a resource to be conquered but rather one to be understood and respected. Success lies in recognising when to exert maximum effort and when to conserve energy while awaiting the next natural surge.Enjoy!

Ever Wonder How Athletes Get 'In The Zone'?You know those moments when everything just clicks? That's what this week's episode is all about. We're diving into something pretty wild - how the voice in your head actually affects your performance. Here's the cool bit: it turns out you can reach that sweet spot of 'flow' when your inner chat matches what you're saying and doing on the outside. It's like when all the parts of you are singing the same tune.Guy opened up about his sporting days, and it's fascinating stuff. He described being 'in the zone' - where time goes all weird and slow, and that usually noisy inner voice just... quiets down. But get this - even though you're running on pure instinct, there's still this part of you that's watching it all happen. Pretty mind-bending, right? We then got into some really interesting chat about kids and family dynamics. Did you know that kids have this built-in drive to fit in with their family? They'll literally reshape themselves to match whatever labels or expectations their parents put on them. For all the parents listening - don't worry, we've got your back. We talked through some practical ways to help shape your kids' inner voice positively. Because let's face it, what goes on in their head matters just as much as what comes out of their mouth. Then things took an interesting turn towards workplace stuff - specifically sick leave policies. You know how some places are like "We trust you, take what you need" while others count every minute? Turns out that trust (or lack of it) really gets under people's skin.Speaking of which, we looked at what Virgin's doing with their sick leave pool system. They've figured out how to keep everyone happy while building an amazing support network. The show wrapped up with this incredible story about when Michelle faced breast cancer and how her workplace's sick leave pool became a lifeline. It's one of those stories that really hits home about why these policies matter. What makes this episode special is how it connects all these dots - from sports to parenting to work culture - showing how that voice in our head shapes pretty much everything we do. In this episode we explored the Fear of Public Speaking. We not only delved into the psychology and biology behind this common fear, but also offered practical tips to conquer it. A Fear of Public Speaking is a widespread and natural human response. Many people, including professionals and seasoned speakers, grapple with it - sweaty palms, racing heartbeats, and the infamous "butterflies in the stomach." Instead, reframe this into the feeling of excitement.Techniques to Overcome the Fear:1. Reframe Your Purpose: Instead of focusing on self-doubt or anxiety, consider how your speaking serves as a beacon for others. Think of yourself as a lighthouse guiding ships safely to shore. By shifting your mindset to see your speech as a contribution to others, you can alleviate anxiety.2. Spotlight Versus Lighthouse Analogy: A spotlight shines intensely on the speaker, creating a sense of exposure and self-consciousness. In contrast, a lighthouse's purpose is to guide and protect. When you view your speaking as a lighthouse, your focus shifts from yourself to the audience, allowing you to share your message with confidence and authenticity. When you concentrate on guiding and enlightening your audience rather than impressing them, you're more likely to stay on track and connect with your listeners.3. Music – Psych yourself into excitement with your favourite high energy music.4. Power Pose – Amy Cuddy and Anthony Robbins have both spoken about changing your physical stature to create confidence.5. Remove the chatter in your head with a really cool technique – you need to listen to the podcast to learn it.“According to most studies, people's number one fear is public speaking. Number two is death. Death is number two. Does that sound right? This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you're better off in the casket than doing the eulogy.” ― Jerry SeinfeldTo remember and present your thoughts cohesively, we discussed practical strategies;Break your speech down into key points, infuse it with relatable anecdotes or stories, and consider the use of visual aids for clarity. The importance of practice was highlighted. Rehearsing your speech multiple times can help solidify your ideas and prevent memory lapses during the presentation.Use mnemonic devices or visualization techniques to remember the structure of your speech - Chunk your speech into bites with a picture in your mind. It can be totally ridiculous such as a big set of lips on your head, or juggling balls on your eyebrows etc.Visualise the speech as a movie in your mind.Record your presentation – listen back to hear what you can remove (filler words and distractions from your messaging). You can not only overcome your fear but also become a more confident and impactful speaker. Remember, your words have the potential to guide and inspire, just like a lighthouse guiding ships through turbulent waters (Corny, but true).BTW We're still waiting for Bollinger to contact us to sponsor the next episode ;)

The Subconscious RobotThe Conscious Mind:Our brain is a fascinating organ, and within it lies the prefrontal cortex—a small yet mighty part responsible for our creative mind and free will. When fully developed, our conscious mind has the remarkable ability to focus and imagine things that aren't even real.It communicates with us through thoughts, pictures, writing, speech, and even physical movements. The Subconscious Mind:Now, let's dive into the powerhouse of our brain—the subconscious mind.Think of it as the big boss, constantly working behind the scenes.Unlike the creative conscious mind, the subconscious is a bit more serious and isn't into the whole "imagination" thing.Instead, it's like a tape player, recording experiences and then playing them back on repeat.Surprisingly, about 90-95% of our day is driven by this subconscious program, leading us to experience the same emotions, thoughts, and words over and over again. It's responsible for forming our beliefs, habits, and behaviors, and it's estimated to be thousands of times more powerful than our conscious mind.Sometimes, there can be conflicts between our logical thinking and imaginative desires, and in those cases, imagination usually wins the battle.Unleashing the Power of the Subconscious Mind:Understanding the immense potential of the subconscious mind opens up a world of possibilities.Imagine having the ability to influence and captivate anyone you meet, becoming a charismatic leader who inspires others to do incredible things. So, how do we change our subconscious responses? Well, it's all about repetition.Repeat those desired thoughts, behaviours, and beliefs until they become second nature. It's not enough to simply be aware of our problems. We have to take active steps to work them out ourselves.Patience is key because change doesn't happen overnight. It takes time and consistent effort. As our conscious mind takes charge of the present, there's less room for the subconscious mind to influence our behaviour.Remember, the conscious mind is the commander, and the subconscious mind is the obedient follower. Conclusion:Understanding and tapping into the power of our subconscious mind is truly mind-blowing. By acknowledging the impact of our subconscious programming, we can actively shape our beliefs, habits, and behaviors for the better. Through repetition, patience, and persistent dedication, we unlock the full potential of our subconscious mind, leading to remarkable transformations in our lives.Your subconscious mind is 100% programable.
