Residency is one of the most profound life-changing seasons in a physician's journey—a time of rapid growth, deep uncertainty, and one of the biggest decisions of all: what comes next. In this unique collaborative episode, host Dr. Dael Waxman is joined by Charles Lowry, Director of Graduate Medical Education Relations at PracticeLink and host of the Surviving and Thriving in Residency podcast. Rather than a traditional interview, Dr. Waxman and Charlie engage in a shared conversation about the critical inflection points they've witnessed in medical students and residents. They explore the hidden struggles beneath the confident exterior—the loneliness, the imposter syndrome, the career uncertainty—and the powerful role that connection, validation, and intentional support can play. Together, they uncover how coaching and career resources can help residents move from survival mode to intentional choice, and why finding your "people" is essential for a sustainable, fulfilling career in medicine. Key Topics Discussed: Charlie's journey from statewide campus director for medical students to his current role supporting residents nationwide. The vulnerability and openness residents show when given a safe, non-evaluative space to share their struggles. The hidden stressors of residency: loneliness, lack of family support, and the challenge of being an international medical graduate. How PracticeLink serves as a free, comprehensive career resource for residents, from CV reviews to scholarships. The role of coaching in addressing imposter syndrome, leadership challenges, and the transition from training to practice. Why career uncertainty is a major driver of stress and well-being issues. Practical advice for residents: take advantage of free resources, find your community, and remember that residency is just one chapter. What gives both Dr. Waxman and Charlie hope about the next generation of physicians. Guest Information: Mr. Charles Lowry, Director of Graduate Medical Education Relations, PracticeLink. Send us a textBefore I had kids I literally had no real idea of what I should expect. I think that's partly why I have spent the years as a mother panicking and reading everything; having learnt that I was wrong about how complicated the job is. Susie and I are in a similar stage with our kids but feel differently about it, so I thought it would be lovely to bring her in to have an open, honest conversation about how the stages unfold and what it really feels like for us. What do you think? Send me a message on teenagersuntangled@gmail.comEllen Galinsky's six stages of parenting:Nurturer - Birth to one yearYour baby learns that they are safe and the more they find their needs met the more confident they'll become as a youth. Boundaries - Ages one to fiveChildren start to test boundaries. They need to be clear and consistent. When you set a boundary it needs to be the same every time, and the consequences need to be applied consistently. Training the Heart -Ages six to twelveYou begin answering questions about boundaries and consequences, and putting them in context with the way society works. It's important to listen to your child, and respect their opinions.Coaching - Ages thirteen to eighteenGive advice but allow the child to make the ultimate decision. We also have to allow our children to suffer the consequences of bad decisions. Nagging, or constant correction, will just cause our kids to tune our voice out. Mentoring - Ages eighteen to job or marriageRefrain from telling them what they should do and from judging the decisions they make. Understand - and treat them - as if that they are capable of solving their own problems. Our job is to offer advice when asked and not to judge. Be curious. Friendship - Job or marriage and beyondNow our kids are established as adults it's time to tone down the parenting and allow them to be our equal. The one key thing to remember is that they will always crave our unconditional love and acceptance, regardless of how old they become. Support the showThank you so much for your support. Ever walk into the dealership in the morning and feel that slow-motion energy? People shuffling in, sipping coffee, staring at their screens, waiting for something to kick them into gear. Then—something shifts. Maybe it's a manager calling out yesterday's wins. Maybe it's an MVP shoutout for someone who went above and beyond. Maybe it's a fun, competitive challenge that gets people fired up. Energy is contagious. The way you start the day sets the tone for how it will go. I always tell leaders—recognition is one of your most powerful tools. People thrive on knowing their work matters. If you're not celebrating wins, highlighting great performance, and making work fun, you're missing an opportunity to build a culture where people actually want to succeed. Something as simple as picking an MVP of the Day, handing out a small trophy, or posting a shoutout on social can shift the entire dynamic of your team. People see what's being rewarded, they learn new strategies, and they push themselves to raise the bar. At the end of the day, dealership life is fast, competitive, and high-pressure—but it should also be exciting, rewarding, and fun. When people feel valued, they give more. When you recognize effort, you inspire more of it. So here's the question—how are you celebrating your team today? With Chris Budd | Expert on The Relationship Between Money and Happiness | Author | Summary: In this chat, Chris discusses why feeling good about money matters and how we can rethink what success means when it comes to our finances. He shares his own journey to feeling financially secure and why having a sense of purpose is key to finding joy. Chris challenges the idea that setting specific money goals is always the best approach and introduces his four pillars of financial well-being: understanding what's true for everyone, what's true for you personally, what holds us all back from feeling happy, and what's stopping you individually from feeling happy. He also talks about how giving yourself permission to be happy is crucial, the benefits of financial coaching, and how money can be a tool for living a meaningful life. Plus, he gives us a sneak peek into his upcoming project, the Financial Well-being Pulse, which aims to shift the focus of financial advice from just dollars and cents to overall well-being. BIO: Chris Budd founded Ovation Finance Ltd, a financial planning practice, in 2000. In 2018, he sold a majority stake to an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT). Chris now provides coaching and consultancy to owners and employees seeking to grow and develop. He authored "The Eternal Business," published by Harriman House in September 2018, and leads The Eternal Business Consultancy, offering advice and assistance to businesses aiming for long-term sustainability beyond the current owners. Chris is a qualified business coach (Advanced Diploma in Coaching And Mentoring from the European Mentoring And Coaching Council), an author of novels and "The Financial Wellbeing Book," and the founder of the Institute for Financial Wellbeing. He hosts the Financial Wellbeing podcast and is a seasoned speaker, addressing topics such as coaching skills for professionals, financial well-being, and employee ownership. Takeaways Financial well-being is about finding happiness and purpose, not just accumulating wealth. Goals should be seen as steps towards purpose and happiness, not as the ultimate objective. Success should be redefined to focus on personal fulfillment and making a positive impact. Knowing oneself and challenging assumptions is crucial for achieving financial well-being. Take the time to understand what truly makes you happy and permit yourself to pursue it. Money should be seen as a tool to support a happy and meaningful life, rather than the sole source of happiness. Financial advice should prioritize clients' well-being and focus on their lives, rather than solely on investment portfolios. Retail therapy and impulsive spending may provide short-term happiness, but developing healthier spending habits can lead to greater long-term well-being. Building a happy and healthy relationship with money involves being kind, compassionate, and mindful of one's values and priorities. Music experiences can be powerful sources of joy and can teach us valuable lessons about presence, connection, and the pursuit of happiness. Both coaching and mentoring focus on growth, with the intention of achieving individual and organizational goals. It's important to keep in mind, however, the distinction between the two that often goes overlooked. Loren Margolis, an Executive Coach, Founder of TLS Leaders, Forbes Contributor, and Faculty for the State University of New York, partners with global organizations to develop their leaders while building inclusive cultures. Over the years, Loren has helped senior leaders deepen their professional capacity so they can tackle greater challenges, and grow themselves within their organization. In this episode, Loren explores the disparities and similarities between coaching and mentoring, highlighting how they are often misconceived as synonymous. It's important to understand the differences between the two, as she believes for individuals, one is better than the other. She also touches on the concept of micro-moments—instances in which we may unknowingly find ourselves engaged in either coaching or mentoring—and ways to make sure you're employing the right method. This week we're joined by coach and mentor, Amy Snow. What is coaching? What is mentoring? What are the differences between the two? That's what we'll be discussing!Amy is a former Division I soccer player and lifelong participant in sports who loves what being an athlete has done for her in every aspect of her life. She graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor's in Statistics and Biometry and a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.). She captained the varsity soccer squad her junior and senior years, was named Ivy League Rookie of the Year her freshman year and earned multiple All-Ivy honors and Athletic Academic All-American status during her tenure there. She was also inducted into the New York State Girls Soccer Hall of Fame in 2018. And while she imagined the transition from sports would be hard, she didn't know how hard…until she got there. That is why she is also passionate about helping college and professional athletes manage their transitions from sports to their new careers. Helping them to create a game plan, challenging them to push themselves in new ways, and ultimately getting them to their goals faster than they could on their own is incredibly rewarding and energizing!
