Or is his reaction totally called for? We can't decide. Novak Djokovic had a Frank Green-esque water bottle dropped on his head after a game when signing autographs and he truly looks like he's about to die. It's now become a meme-able moment so obviously we had to give our two cents on it. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Vashti goes backstage with Regina Botros to talk about her life as a writer and performer. Vashti Hughes is a writer / actor and originally trained at UWS Nepean, graduating with a BA in Performance. Vashti has written and self produced works that are based in Sydney's local history. Currently Vashti is performing in Kate's final home, a site specific piece “Dinner with Kate Leigh the Gangster Queen” at 212 Devonshire St, Surry Hills, now the Jazzy Café Bar . “Dinner with Kate Leigh the Gangster Queen” is a spin off of work that she wrote and performed ten years ago - “Mum's In : Stories from Razorhurst”. Mum's In was a dark cabaret about five of Sydney's most notorious underworld characters in the 1920's –Kate Leigh, Tilly Devine, Nellie Cameron, Frank Green and Guido Calleti, with Vashti playing all of them. This played at the Bordello Theatre, Kings Cross Hotel every Sunday for a year in 2011-12. Mum's In : Stories from Razorhurst : https://youtu.be/lSjn9BbBbOU Vashti also wrote “Piccolo Tales' which played for 6 months at the Piccolo Bar, where she played the part of Vittorio the 80 year old owner of this famous Sydney café. It was a rollercoaster ride through 50 years of the Kings Cross as told by Vittorio, played by Vashti. 80 year old Vittorio also ended up being in the show. It made it into the 2015 Sydney Morning Herald's “10 Best Sydney Shows”, and was nominated for the 2016 GLUGS. Vashti wrote and performed “Dictionary by a Bitch” about the infamous Bea Miles, Sydney eccentric and bohemian rebel, famous for reciting Shakespeare in the streets for money. This was performed at the State Library of NSW. Vashti has created a lot of cabaret characters and shows, one being the all women comedy cabaret group “Six Quick Chicks”, which has been performed in various Sydney venues Photo cr: Roz Sharpe

Frank Green lll has overcome so many things. But God never gives us a load heavier than we can bear. He is a strong man and one of the kindest people I have ever met.Growing up in the Elmwood Projects of Cairo, Illinois, Frank was faced with many unforeseen challenges such as drug abuse, alcoholism, domestic violence, sexual assaults, gang violence and more. At the age of 21, Frank found himself facing 21 years in Military Prison. After release he looked at life as hopeless for a young Black male and began a life of criminal acts.In 2019, Frank received a HEART transplant. He credits that gift of life to his relationship with God as he had already stopped the criminal acts and been licensed as a Minister by St. James C.M.E. Church in Salinas, Ca.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 30 °F, and warmer weather returns today! Expect highs in the 50s as the weekend approaches. Cooler temperatures prevail this evening, with maybe a bit of rain thrown in on the side.Water coolerYesterday evening, Richmond Police officers were called to the 400 block of Byswick Lane and found Maurice Watson-Bey, a man in his 40, “suffering from trauma.” Watson-Bey would die at the scene. As of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports 2,959 new positive cases of the coronavirus in the Commonwealthand 58 new deaths as a result of the virus. VDH reports 297 new cases in and around Richmond (Chesterfield: 114, Henrico: 102, and Richmond: 81). Since this pandemic began, 687 people have died in the Richmond region. As we slide down the backside of a coronacurve both locally and across the state, check out these hopeful national graphs from The COVID Tracking Project. I think their commentary on the deaths chart gets it right: “We have seen the 7-day average for new deaths decrease for over a week. At the same time, states are reporting an average of 3,000 people dying per day. The data is hopeful and devastating.” I think this applies generally. Two vaccines exist: hopeful; extremely limited supply: devastating. 15,000 people vaccinated in our region last week: hopeful; folks with// 2021.02.04 the largest burden of the disease still experiencing barriers to accessing the vaccine: devastating. I think we’ll continue to live in this tension for the next several months. Speaking of tension, the Governor has a press conference scheduled for tomorrow at 11:00 AM to "provide updates on the Commonwealth’s continued response to COVID-19 and vaccination efforts." It’s always a trip to tune into these, because who knows what we’ll learn!I keep saying that you can’t get too attached to your favorite bill in the General Assembly so early on in the process. There are just a million and one ways to kill a bill—some of them surprising, all of them painful. But, despite that reality, yesterday the Senate passed SB 1165, which would abolish the death penalty in Virginia on a 21–17 vote. The House will consider a similar measure, HB 2263, soon. Now I just need someone to read through the legislation and let me know all of the asterisks and caveats. Given yesterday’s litany of grossquotes from legislators on both sides, I’m sure there are some important details in the language of whatever version of this bill escaped the Senate. That sounded unnecessarily negative! Ultimately, I agree with the Governor when he says, “Virginia has executed more people than any other state. The practice is fundamentally inequitable. It is inhumane. It is ineffective….It’s time for Virginia to join 22 other states and abolish the death penalty.” Frank Green, at the Richmond Times-Dispatch has new, less gross quotes from legislators and a bit of the explanation I’m looking for.Gregory J. Gilligan, also at the RTD, reports that the truck-leasing site just south of the Wawa on Arthur Ashe Boulevard will become…something for people! Although, because I’m never satisfied, the rendering provided shows not nearly enough height and way too much parking visible from the street. Let’s create these outdoor spaces for people and retail options for residents, but let’s do it with some dang density, you know?Speaking of, the City’s Planning Commission “backed Eagle Construction of VA’s plan to replace two houses at 509 and 511 Libbie Ave. with a 14-unit townhome development,” says Jonathan Spiers at Richmond BizSense. GASP! Townhomes! As you can imagine, some neighbors were concerned about the very things that make this project appealing—density and height. Also, to be clear, this is not affordable housing by any stretch of the imagination: “…the townhomes would range between 3,000 and 4,500 square feet in size, and each unit would have between three and five bedrooms, at least 3½ bathrooms and a two- or three-car garage accessed by the shared alley.” Now just imagine how many homes you could build on those two lots if they were smaller and built for just one car per unit? This, on /r/rva, is a deeply coronavirus post: “Does anyone know of any large, open fields in RVA? I’m new here and lonely and really need to just lay in a bunch of flowers or something. Any nature would do.”This morning’s longreadNextdoor Is Quietly Replacing the Small-Town PaperNo matter the platform, I don’t love the idea of a huge part of our local civics conversation happening inside a walled-garden social media platform. The app boomed in popularity during the pandemic, reporting an 80% jump in user engagement in the first two weeks of March 2020, as neighbors sought advice on where to find toilet paper and masks, and stay-at-home orders hindered in-person interactions. It also became an important communication tool for local authorities about shutdown measures, mask mandates, and testing sites. As Nextdoor begins to outcompete local news sites for readers and ad dollars, it’s worth asking what’s gained and lost by that shift — and whether it is in the public interest. What makes that question hard to answer is that Nextdoor is fundamentally opaque. If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.
Good morning, RVA! It’s 31 °F, and today we see the sun! It might take until later this afternoon, but we’re gonna see that thing and feel good about it. Expect highs in the mid 40s, the snow to melt, and the opportunity to enjoy a really great cup of coffee/tea/beverage of your choice.Water coolerYesterday afternoon, police officers were called to the 1500 block of Mechanicsville Turnpike and found Jaquon Mitchell, a man in this 30s, shot to death. According to the RPD’s homicide list, this is the second murder of 2021.As of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports 2,740 new positive cases of the coronavirus in the Commonwealthand 43 new deaths as a result of the virus. VDH reports 395 new cases in and around Richmond (Chesterfield: 155, Henrico: 160, and Richmond: 80). Since this pandemic began, 683 people have died in the Richmond region. That’s three straight days with new reported cases in the 2,000s, and the seven-day average of the same metric fell below 4,000 for the first time since January 1st. We’ve got a similar decreasing trend in hospitalizations: We haven’t seen the seven-day average of new hospitalizations under 100 since the last day of 2020. Additionally, the seven-day average of deaths, which, remember, does lag behind the rest of the metrics, appears to have at least plateaued. These all seem like good signs of progress? Decreasing cases + increasing vaccinations = the world I want to live in right now. I am still a little nervous that Data Reporting Issues will return to dash any hopes that my spreadsheet has generated, but I’m going to allow myself to feel optimistic this morning!Michael Paul Williams at the Richmond Times-Dispatch writes about Black History Month and what it means to look back at 2020 through the lens of history. To quote a bit: “To call February’s Black History Month a ‘celebration’ always felt a bit off, but never more so than this year. Trumpism, resurgent white nationalism, insurrection and the disparate toll of COVID-19 on people of color highlight the folly of treating Black history like a footnote. You can’t understand this moment until you accept that America’s treatment of its Black citizens represents a profound failure of democracy. America’s shallow pool of knowledge of this story has just enough depth to drown us.”The City’s Economic Development Authority has approved a $120,000 grant to local restaurant delivery company ChopChop—think GrubHub, but local. From the press release: “The grant will allow ChopChop to create the Richmond Rate Reduction Program. The Richmond Rate Reduction Program reduces delivery fees charged to local restaurants from 20% to 7% for a three-month period.” A 13% reduction in fees charged to restaurants seems like maybe a noticeable amount? I have no idea! I do know, however, that this $120,000 runs out after three months, so we’ll see if ChopChop will keep their new, lower rates moving forward (which is definitely their “long-term objective”). Also, neither here nor there, this administration loves restaurants. I love restaurants, too, and I desperately miss them, but they love them, like, a lot a lot.Wyatt Gordon, writing for Style Weekly looks at how Feed More and Richmond Public Schools have worked (and continue to work!) to address hunger in our city. I love this quote from Doug Pick, Feed More’s chief executive, "This pandemic has made really clear the haves and have nots of our country…We are a really well-run logistics business with a big heart, but hunger is not the problem—it’s poverty.”General Assembly update! Keep in mind that bills die horrible deaths at many, many points along the path to becoming a law. Try not to get too stoked or upset about any of these things, because who knows when they could radically change or flameout entirely. First, for the Virginia Mercury, Ned Oliver covers the progress on marijuana legalization. Check out this exchange between Sen. Jennifer McClellan and Sen. Creigh Deeds: “Sen. Creigh Deeds, D-Bath, noted lawmakers have already decriminalized marijuana, which reduced the penalty for possession of an ounce or less from a misdemeanor punishable by jail time to a $25 civil infraction…‘At least where I live, law enforcement don’t feel incentivized to write the tickets and they’re not writing the tickets,’ Deeds said. McClellan responded, ‘With all due respect, I think that might be different in other parts of the state.’”

The Everyday Sniper Podcast: Straight Jacket Armory with Bartlein Barrels, Supply & Demand May you live in interesting times! The firearm industry is on fire right now, demand has never been greater and we living through the perfect storm of violence in the streets, politics, and the pandemic. All this has combined to put a huge crush on the industry. I have Nick from Straight Jacket Armory and Frank Green on the phone to talk about the supply chain in terms of barrels and components. With demand being where it stands, the barrel industry is a good weather gauge to measure the temperature of the water. Temps are high, and supply is low. It's important to put these things into perspective and getting the perspective from Frank and Nick should be illuminating. Thanks to both guys for breaking it down and thanks to all the listeners.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 72 °F, and today looks hot and humid. Expect highs in the 90s until the sun goes down. If you spend some time outside, expect to sweat.Water coolerAs of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports 841 new positive cases of the coronavirus in the Commonwealth and 15 new deaths as a result of the virus. VDH reports 157 new cases in and around Richmond (Chesterfield: 59, Henrico: 61, and Richmond: 37). Since this pandemic began, 196 people have died in the Richmond region. Pandemic Tuesday did not bring its expected numbers bump, and VDH has reported 20 or fewer people dying from the coronavirus each of the last five days—an encouraging sign.Yesterday, the Governor announced that, except for Richmond and Northern Virginia, evvvvveryone else moves into Phase Two of recovery this coming Friday. Folks get a whole three days notice! You can read the 40 pages of guidelines here (PDF). Notable changes:Gatherings of up to 50 people, with proper social distancing, are now permitted. I think this only applies to random, unspecified gatherings like LARPing with your pals in Monroe Park (although see the section on recreational sports below, and be sure to keep it to just jousting). Lots of places can open to 50% of their internal capacity, which, for places like the VMFA is way more than 50 folks.Restaurants and “beverage service” (aka breweries, I think) can open up to 50% of their internal capacity with social distancing, disposable menus (quick! call the printer ASAP!), PPE for restaurant workers, and increased cleaning procedures.Gyms can open up to 30% of their internal capacity with 10-feet of social distancing—that’s up from the standard six feet found elsewhere in the document.Pools are back, but only for “lap swimming, diving, exercise, and instruction.” Kids are bummed. You can play recreational sports if “ten feet of physical distance can be maintained by all instructors, participants, and spectators with the exception of incidental contact or contact between members of the same household.” Basketball = No. Doubles badminton = yes, but only if you play on the same side as your housemate.Museums can open up to 50% of their internal capacity.Social distancing, teleworking, and masks are all still part of this “Safer at Home” plan.So there you have it, Phase Two. We never really learned what the goals and metrics were for getting here, but the Governor says “key statewide health metrics continue to show positive signs,” which I guess is good enough for him. You can probably expect Richmond and NOVA to enter Phase Two in the next couple of weeks, although, I imagine the desire to sync up the entire state will eventually be too strong to resist. In the Governor’s original Forward Virginia Blueprint document (PDF), he said Phase II could last 2–4 weeks, and, since we’ve stopped using data to guide these decisions and started using the calendar, I’d circle July 19th for Phase Three.Last night, hundreds, maybe thousands, of protestors took to the streets for the fourth? fifth? straight night in Downtown Richmond. Much like yesterday—minus the violent escalation by the police—the crowd’s vibe was angry, peaceful, and hopeful. @echadwilliams grabbed these excellent drone photos around the Lee Monument right as curfew started (which was promptly ignore by both protestors and cops) and will give you an idea of the scale of things. The Richmond Times-Dispatch’s Sabrina Moreno was on the scene throughout the night and her thread on Twitter is worth scrolling through. I have to point out this particular video of hundreds of bikes rolling down Franklin Street and this one of what it looks like when people, bikes, and cars all get equal priority on a street (and also what it looks like when drivers drive the wrong way down Broad Street??). The night ended peaceful, again, at the Lee Monument with folks celebrating the day.Earlier yesterday, though, at the Mayor’s public apology, the mood couldn’t have been more different. For about an hour, legitimately angry citizens took the Mayor to task for all kinds of things, shouted him down when he tried to address the crowd, and demanded he take a handful of actions—including the Marcus Alert, a Civilian Review Board, violence de-escalation techniques, and, very loudly, the firing of the Police Chief and the officers involved in yesterday’s unprovoked gassing of peaceful protestors. The Mayor and the Chief said the officers would be disciplined, which, as you can imagine, didn’t sit well with the crowd. The rally ended, folks we still mad, and the City’s leadership hadn’t set a vision for moving forward other than the Mayor agreeing to join protestors on a march from the Capitol to the Lee Monument. Via /r/rva here are a ton of pictures that do a great job capturing the frustration of everyone involved. But at that march later in the evening, walking-and-talking to a smaller crowd, maybe we got the first steps forward on police reform. Sabrina Moreno and Frank Green at the RTD say “The mayor vowed to expedite policies that would remove choke holds, establish a civilian review board to hold police accountable and investigate de-escalation techniques — demands activists have called for in Richmond since the killing of Marcus-David Peters during a mental health crisis in 2018 by Richmond police department.” Mayor Stoney also retweeted reporter Brad Kutner saying “@LevarStoney agrees to: Civilian review board, Marcus Alert…[, and] no choke holds.” I’d love to see immediate action on each of these, but, honestly, I don’t for sure know the process or timeline for getting any of these things implemented. The police policies sound like something the Mayor could just lean on the Chief to get implemented ASAP, while the Marcus Alert and the Civilian Review Board will almost certainly require City Council (and possible the General Assembly for the latter).I’m most interested in how Richmond puts together a meaningful Civilian Review Board, and have been reading through some PDFs to get me up to speed. I’ve got a ton more to learn, and am looking for suggestions! So please, if you’ve got a favorite CRB or a clear vision for what Richmond’s should look like, let me know. Until then, your homework for tomorrow is to read through Oakland’s Measure LL(which is intense!) and Charlottesville’s Civilian Review Board ordinance (which is way, way less intense but something we could definitely implement in Richmond if we wanted to). This morning’s longreadBecoming a Parent in the Age of Black Lives MatterHere’s Clint Smith, who I’ve linked to before, about becoming a parent over the last handful of years. In 2015, before I had children, I wrote a letter to the son I might one day have. In it I wrote, “I hope to teach you so much of what my father taught me, but I pray that you live in a radically different world from the one that he and I have inherited.” Now I do have a son, and all the fears, anxieties, and joys I wrote about five years ago are no longer an abstraction. They exist in his curly hair, his soft face, and his voice full of songs and questions. I am not sure how different the world I entered is from the one he has, but the past several weeks—to say nothing of the past several years—have made clear how fragile the project of progress truly is.If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.
The Everyday Sniper Episode 245: Frank Green of Bartlein Barrels An often-repeated question I was getting in the Podbean App has focused on Barrel contours. I was gonna answer this question several times and get into the heat and weight discussion but decided to reach out to Bartlein Barrels and ask Frank Green to come on the podcast. I think this entry episode with Frank is a master class on discussing the various pro and cons of barrel features and options. Frank breaks down the concepts in an easy to understand format. We start out talking contours, that is the main focus of the conversation. We get into twist rates, which brings us to Gain Twist barrels. The experience over several years of Bartlein doing the Gain Twist for many different shooting disciplines. I really appreciate Frank coming on, this is an excellent episode. Have a great week, stay safe, protect yourself at all times, to include the family. Thanks for listening, thanks for sharing, and thanks for commenting.

Today on the show, I hang out with my buddy, Frank Green. Frank and I don't know each other very well, but we had a lot of stuff to talk about. So much in fact, we never got to Social Media Issues, Stories From The Stage or What Are You Listening To. But that's okay because Frank will be back in a few weeks. We do talk about gigging, Frank growing up playing bass, our dear friend Kevin McCreery, how he landed into a band that got a record deal within a month of him joining, the amazing amount of talent in the Louisville music scene and dealing with death and depression. This is one of those rare episodes where we get a little deep so you don't want to miss this one. We even touch on concept records! The picture of the barrel is at 800 rounds only. He cleaned it after every 25 rounds fired. Bore should measure .277" x .284". It now measures .279" x .2855". You can see how the bristles of the brush are dragging up the sides, over the top and down the other side of the rifling/lands. The brush is trying to rotate with the twist but doesn't always. Sunday morning sermon from 26th April 2015. Preacher Debra & Frank Green. Title: Transforming communities for good
With an unbiased passion for music – regardless of genre – it's clear that Skytone Entertainment artist Morgan Riley offers something new to country listeners. Her soon-to-be-released album Collage is just that… A melting pot of genres with an ever-so-slight country dominance. While the road to this release hasn't always been smooth, Riley has handled each curve with hope and exuberance – all the while finding her sound and writing to connect with her fans. “I'm a firm believer in everything happening for a reason – everything that's happened throughout my life has led to my relationship with Skytone and the release of this album. I couldn't be happier.”A Maryland native, Riley knew she was destined to be a singer from the start. “One day when I was younger, I started singing a Mariah Carey song… My brother heard, grabbed my parents and said, ‘you've got to hear this!'” Impressed by their daughter's obvious talents, Riley's parents quickly became the greatest support in her pursuit of a career in music – a dream inherited by her grandmother, who also sang. At five, Riley began performing at weddings and anniversary parties and by 15, she was recording at a local studio. Confident in years of practice and experience gained in live and studio performance, she made the move to New York City at 18.In New York City, Riley found herself regularly performing with a pop-R&B group and recording at the city's legendary Hit Factory Studio. In a struggle to find her true sound, she moved back south to Greenville, South Carolina and began to perfect her country edge. “I'm generally undeterred by any type of hardship or roadblock. My dad has been a huge inspiration when it comes to this. He won't let me give up…” Auditioning for the Pride of Carolinas, she beat out 4,300 people and received single placement on the competition's compilation album by Koch New York, featuring the best artists in North and South Carolina. Shortly after, she began working with producer Chris Clay (TLC) on her album Affinity. “Chris has always been such an incredible supporter of me and what I do and, of course, is an incredible talent. I so enjoyed working with him on Affinity. The album really represented where I was at the time… Still, I felt I had a bit more country in me that needed to come out.”Affinity landed in the lap of veteran producer and engineer Frank Green, whose track record includes multiple #1's and just as many gold and platinum albums. Riley met with Green, performed a few of her originals and was quickly signed to his label, Skytone Entertainment. “My whole life I've dreamed of being signed to a label by someone that believes in me and all I do. I've certainly found that in Skytone and Frank.” The deal was made sweeter yet when Riley and Green began writing together for Collage material – a writing relationship whose chemistry she describes as “off the chart”. Drawing inspiration from her top musical influences – everyone from Carrie Underwood to Alanis Morrisette, Evanescence to Jewel – has given her unparalleled flexibility when it comes to writing. “I find I can write any kind of genre. I've also taken bits and pieces from different genres and pulled them into my writing. Collage is very much a product of that.”Until the album's release – set for early spring – Riley continues to write, perform and work with children aged two through five at New Springs Church. “I'm really blessed to be where I'm at in life. I have no doubt given the team I've surrounded myself with that this release has the potential for great success. I feel like Collage is me – the first project I've done that truly represents my voice. While all other genres play a part in this album, my dad always encouraged my country side. Now that I've found it, I can't wait to share it with fans.”
