In the late 1970s, two Yale roommates decided to tackle Bikecentennial, where they would bicycle from coast to coast during their summer vacation. They were hoping to see more of the United States and do some soul searching. 27-year-old Alison Botha thought December 18th, 1994 was going to be just like every other day. Except this day would turn out to be the most traumatic day of her life. She was abducted near her South African home, raped, stabbed, disemboweled, and nearly decapitated by two men, who left her for dead. Incredibly, she saved her own life and was able to get help. In July of 2012, two young cousins went for a summer bike ride and never returned back home. Lyric Cook-Morrissey, 10, and Elizabeth Collins, 8 vanished from Evansdale, Iowa, and wouldn’t be seen for months. Their bodies were eventually found by hunters, but their killer has never been caught. There have been many suspects throughout the years, and even a possible connection to the Delphi murders, but their case remains unsolved. An unknown American serial killer terrorized the District of Columbia in 1971-1972. This killer targeted young black girls walking alone in the suburbs. All 6 girls were between the ages of 10-18 and had been found dumped off the highway in a grassy patch. Carol Spinks, Darlenia Johnson, Brenda Crockett, Nenomoshia Yates, Brenda Woodard, Diane Williams, and possibly Teara Bryant all were victims of the Freeway Phantom. Almost all of them were raped and strangled. The killer forced one of the victims to call home and made another victim write a taunting note to the police. Not all law enforcement agencies agree on the number of victims as well; there are possibly 6-7 victims of the Freeway Phantom. 50 years later, and no suspects have been arrested, though some were investigated. On July 18th, 1984 James Huberty brought 3 weapons into a crowded McDonald's in San Ysidro, California. In August of 1990, an American serial killer tormented the college town of Gainesville, FL. Danny Rolling, a career criminal, and drifter, killed 5 college students and terrorized the town. Danny Rolling sadistically murdered Christina Powell, Sonja Larson, Christa Hoyt, Manny Taboada, and Tracey Paules. Their bodies were found within the span of 3 days.
