My friends, Tavia and Jewel Whitlowe, are on the brink of divorce. Separated. Twenty-four years of matrimony hang in the balance with a wing and a prayer. This is one of the most time-sensitive and vulnerable episodes to date. Watch the power of God move in this third installment of the “Marriage Vows Series” entitled, “For Better or For Worse.”

In her new book Typical Girls: The Rhetoric of Womanhood in Comic Strips (Ohio State Press, 2021) Susan Kirtley examines female-created comics that were nationally syndicated starting in the late 1970s-2010. Kirtley uncovers the understudied and developing history of these strips, defining and exploring the ramifications of this expression of women's roles at a time of great change in history and in comic art. This impressive, engaging, and timely study illustrates how these comics express the complexities of women's experiences, especially as such experiences were shaped by shifting and often competing notions of womanhood and feminism. Including the comics of Lynn Johnston (For Better or For Worse), Cathy Guisewite (Cathy), Nicole Hollander (Sylvia), Lynda Barry (Ernie Pook's Comeek), Barbara Brandon-Croft (Where I'm Coming From), Alison Bechdel (Dykes to Watch Out For), and Jan Eliot (Stone Soup), Typical Girls is an important history of the representation of womanhood and women's rights in popular comic strips. Timo Schmitz offered the book download of "For Better and For Worse" on his blog. You can get a copy here: For Better and For Worse In his book, Timo Schmitz has delved into the many aspects of relationships. With the title "For Better AND for Worse" the word of importance here is AND. He emphasizes the importance of relationships not being an either/or proposition but a more healthy point of view might be to pay attention to the AND. After all, healthy relationships spend a good amount of time on that aspect. There is a mixture of prose and poetry in this interesting, thoughtful read. Schmitz does have the gift of writing and he opens up this gift for all to see. Also see Falling Apart by Timo Schmitz --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lisa-tomey/message

Listen in to hear how their messy 39-year marriage unfolded and the drama that came after their deaths. This case is a medley of mistresses, blackmail, murder plots, and domestic violence. It’s been a minute...I KNOW. Apologies for my absence. But I’m back with a treat for your ears. BJ has been holding on to this episode for a month now. A great conversation was had on a getaway to SEVERN, MD for a recharge. Only a small few were in attendance. And two of which had a conversation with me over dinner that spawned an idea. And if you know BJ, he always has equipment on hand. So he decided to discuss an adage that we vow before God unnecessarily, with the idea that it truly benefits your relationship. When in fact, it may actually hinder it. Yes...we discuss For Better or For Worse. With two amazing people who have seen both of those things with each other. And have stood the test of time facing both advantage and adversity...WITHOUT EVEN MENTIONING THAT IN THEIR VOWS.Today we return with the dynamic duo known as RBC (Respect Boundaries Communication)...known individually as Stefanie The Life Architect and Denny Blanco. We shared a great conversation with each about acceptance and allowances in relationships. So many thoughts were shared. One in particular was how For Better or For Worse is detrimental to anyone who may feel, at any time, that another person’s better or worse may not be sufficient enough for their fulfillment. In this case...do you settle just because you committed to that vow? There is a chance that without fully understanding the responsibility of the words, you may have signed up for the demise of your relationship health. To us, For Better or Worse is very critical to say to anyone who isn’t committed to the betterment of self and spouse. If things get worse, then we as adults deal with those consequences. But in a spiritual realm, this has evolved our matrimony into settling, bondage, abuse, and a loss of love for your relationship. We decided to talk from the title of For Better No Worse. This simply means that with Respect, Boundaries, and Communication in your relationship...you are prepared for the worse that can happen. And it won’t break or bind you to an emotionally challenged clause in your relationship contract. We talk about how women desire marriage, when you haven’t seen or supported him at his worse. Why do you feel he should marry you, when he hasn’t experienced anything in terms of support in his worse case scenarios? As well as how women will say “I only do that for my husband” though she has never been married to know if a husband will appreciate it. We talk about women being strict in terms of standards and requirements of men...due to the world’s mistreatments of women...especially Black Women. Is a high standard of man fair, if you are responsible for loving him in much lesser conditions (based on your vows before God)? This is a great conversation with great minds who have a great idea of marriage. Don’t say shit you don’t mean. Even in marriage. Because if worse comes to worse, better may just be the exit. You never know.

In this weeks episode of Tobin Tonight, Tobin talks to Canadian Great, Lynn Johnston about her career as a cartoonist. She discuss her struggles, her early success and of course the comic strip that started off in newspapers and became a television show in syndication, "For Better or For Worse" . She talks about her tough relationship with her mom, and the backlash she caused by creating a gay character and killing off the dog in the comic. It's really quite the episode. 2019: On any given day, “For Better or For Worse” could be funny, sweet, bittersweet or hauntingly dramatic – just like life in my own family or yours. Perhaps nothing about the strip was more shocking than the day in 2008 that cartoonist Lynn Johnston announced she would no longer be producing new strips but would be re-releasing the original from day one, with occasional fixes to continuity and timeliness. Would that even work? It has and it does--the strip appears in 2,000 newspapers in 23 countrie

Every once in a while you get to meet one of your heroes and they turn out to be even more wonderful than you expected. Lynn Johnston is one of the great newspaper cartoonists of her era. The creator of the classic "For Better or For Worse:", a most delightful and humanistic strip, joined me for a most delightful and humanistic chat which left me smiling for hours after we spoke. I don't want to spoil this at all but suffice it to say that Lynn was one of my favorite interview subjects ever. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/classiccomics/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/classiccomics/support

Actor, Jayne Eastwood joining the conversation on Cue To Cue Today!! What a blast I had with Jayne! She made me guffaw a few times during our conversation. Don’t be fooled! There are so many gems of wisdom hidden amongst the laughter and funny stories, Jayne has had a diversified career as an actor with much success and she is opening up about the ups and downs of it all and how she remains grounded through it all. In this episode: How painting has served as another creative outlet and forces her to be present and in the moment What mantra she used to help her quit smoking after 50 years and the effect it has had on her vocal range How to accept rejection as a part of the game and why it is important to feel the feelings around being rejected. How “showing up” is the key to moving forward in your career as an artist. A little about Jayne: Jayne Eastwood, actor (born in Toronto). Jayne Eastwood was raised in Toronto, where she attended Northern Secondary School. It was in Toronto that she became a member of the cast of the musical Godspell, which played at the ROYAL ALEXANDRA THEATRE. The show ran from 1972-73 and Eastwood worked with cast members Martin SHORT, Andrea MARTIN, Gilda RADNER, and Eugene LEVY, and joined several of them in founding the Second City Theatre Troupe. Eastwood often appeared on Second City's creative offspring, SCTV, most memorably in the famous parody of GOIN' DOWN THE ROAD (her recurring line of dialogue is "I'm bummed out") with John CANDY and Joe FLAHERTY. Though Eastwood moves effortlessly from comedy to drama, comedy remains her magnetic north, drawing her to work with Women Fully Clothed, a group of performers nominated in 2005 for a CANADIAN COMEDY AWARD for best sketch troupe. From the early 1970s to the mid-1980s Eastwood appeared in stage productions of works by Michel TREMBLAY, Tom Stoppard, and Neil Simon, by such companies as Theatre in the Dell, Toronto Arts Productions, Centrestage Company, and Toronto Truck Theatre. She maintained a presence in both movies and television, working steadily in a variety of roles that began, in the 1980s, to include considerable voice work. One of her first television appearances was on the series That's Show Biz with Lorne MICHAELS and Hart and Earl Pomerantz, and she went on to become a regular on John Byner's show Bizarre from 1980 to 1985. In film, she played the president's wife in Al WAXMAN's sex comedy My Pleasure Is My Business (1975), appeared in the Robin SPRY film One Man (1977), had a small part in David CRONENBERG's Videodrome (1983) and did voice work for The Care Bears Movie (1985). She could be heard as the voice of Mrs Dingle and of Cookie and Joyce in the animated shows For Better or For Worse, and Bob and Margaret. In 1998 she won a GEMINI AWARD for best supporting actress in a drama for Dangerous Offender: the Marlene Moore Story. She played Aunt Agatha on the series Noddy and Friends, winning a 1999 Gemini Award for her work. Eastwood's film and TV appearances continued through the 1990s and into the new millennium, in works as varied as Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows (2001), Chicago (2002) and My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002). Eastwood has had parts in everything from stage productions of Marat/Sade to TV shows such as King of Kensington, Anne of Green Gables, and Riverdale, and in radio plays like CBC's Steve the Second. She is best known for her role as Betty, the pregnant wife abandoned by Joey in the canonical English-Canadian film Goin' down the Road (1970). Many viewers will recall her as the character Ronnie Sacks in the Canadian television series This Is Wonderland or as one of the regular characters in the partly improvised Train 48. She appears as Maxine Bingley in the series Billable Hours and plays a teacher in the movie Hairspray (2007), which was shot in Toronto. She has a recurring character part in the popular series Little Mosque n the Prarie, and reprised her Goin' down the Road role in the sequel, Down the Road Again (2011). In 2014 she was a guest star on Working the Engles alongside her old friend Andrea Martin. She can be seen in the hit series Haven (2013-2014) as the recurring lead role of Gloria. More recently Jayne worked with director Kenny ORTEGA on The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Orphan Black with Tatiana MASLANY. In 1999 Jayne Eastwood received the EARLE GREY AWARD for lifetime achievement and the recipient of the 2011 DAVE BROADFOOT AWARD at the CANADIAN COMEDY AWARDS. Eastwood is a talented and reliable actor who decided early on to remain in Toronto rather than leave for the limelight of the US. Her career is curiously and satisfyingly Canadian in that she has crafted a successful working life as an ensemble player in a variety of media while remaining in her own home town. Marriage starts with a vow of "For Better or For Worse," but when the worst comes, do you double down on that vow or look for the exit? It is easy to love your spouse when things are good, but it is when things get hard that our true character shows and we have the opportunity to love like Jesus, even when it's hard.
So, this week we are changing things up a bit. We are calling this a bonus episode because it wasn't something we originally planned. Join us to hear three fun and lighthearted stories centered around the vows we took 16 years ago: for better/for worse, for richer/for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do us part. We'll dive into the great orange juice debate and what happens when one partner tears their achilles. We even have a challenge for you at the end... Welcome to the Love or Work Podcast, hosted by Andre Shinabarger (Physician Assistant, Grady Hospital) and Jeff Shinabarger (Social Entrepreneur and Founder of Plywood People). They are asking the question: Is it possible to change the world, stay in love and raise a healthy family? 100 interviews where Jeff and Andre learn from other working families in the journey of marriage, purpose and parenting. Episode #45 was an awesome show with the cast of "For Better or For Worse", the stage play directed by Racquel Marie Jones. Racquel, who also acts in the play, stopped in the studio with one of her cast members Otis Becoat. The play is a thought-provoking plot about what happens when you end up in a relationship that you did not consult God about. In the 2nd hour, Joe BOSS gave us his "Invest in yourself" tip about Discipline. GDott's Diversity University was about expanding your palette when it comes to the performing arts. The "Ask Dr Té" segment included a question about how married couples handle infidelity. Our first topic is The Dark Knight Rises -If you haven't seen the Dark Knight Rises yet, don't worry, there is a spoiler alert in this movie, so listen for that - or prepare to get spoiled. We talk about Christopher Nolan's use of realism and science fiction elements, Harvey Dent Day vs Kasmir Pulasky Day, Phil's desire for a catless Catwoman (is this like vegetarian meat?) the Batman trilogy's shifting thematic focus involving themes of organized crime and big business, movie Bane vs comic book Bane, the similarities in background between Bane and Batman, and also the John Blake character, and how he compares to the various heroes that took up the mantle of Robin. We also take a look at the performances in this movie, and how we rank them. From there, we transition to some discussion of my (Matt's) time soaking in Bombast's first-ever San Diego Comic-Con experience. We talk about first impressions, and I get Phil and Janine's reactions to the pictures of myself in a lazy man's Robin costume. If you would like to follow along with those pictures of me in a Robin costume check them out H E R E. We talk about the panels I went to, including Dave McKean, which I wrote about for the Beat (Heidi McDonald's pioneering comics blog) and Lynn Johnston's (For Better or For Worse) panel. We briefly mention Ray Bradbury, whose death this year was definitely a topic in the air at this year's con. I talk about the Eisners, the award show for comics, and we discuss our desire for Kanye west to stage crash at the Eisners. Please, please let this happen someday.

This is further hammered home by Yura's slutty sister, Rika, who soon realizes that Makoto is clueless in the ways of love and has no idea how to make her sister happy and tries to instruct him on how to change the situation. Yura's friends try to give her advice as well on how to satisfy a man. It doesn't help that two co-workers are coming on to Makoto at work, even though they know he is married. My Grade: C-
