SERIES 3 EPISODE 10: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: First he held a news conference where the reporters didn't have microphones. Then he held a news conference where the reporters basically didn't get to ask questions. What's next? A Trump News Conference without Trump? Sounds like a good idea. Incredibly, CNN ran the whole nonsensical non-news conference rant live. As somebody who was hired by CNN as its first year ended in 1981 I have a secret for them – the acronym stands for “Cable NEWS Network.” You're no longer news. Cut to a test pattern, fire everybody, and start from scratch. Which also applies to Trump's running mate. I'm beginning to think J.D. Vance is actually a Democratic plant. New Kensington, Pennsylvania. At VFW Post 92. That's Veterans of Foreign Wars, the post number is 92, and there is still the Sarah Palin rule. Vance called it "VFA," forgot the number, had to fish into his pocket for a card that had the number written on it, and forgot the Palin rule (if you're an idiot running for Vice President, and you have to remember something, just write it on your hand). There are more polls and Kamalapalooza continues. She's pulled off a nine-point swing in Pennsylvania and a ten-point swing nationally. So naturally Politico led with 28 paragraphs on Vivek Ramaswamy insisting Trump was listening to his advice to focus on the issues and not attack her. This is while the Republican campaign is imploding so quickly that now Frank Luntz is wondering if Trump is trying to lose. And as the Trump campaign continues to try to insist it has nothing to do with Project 2025, Media Matters uncovers the implausible. There's a Project 2025 training video starring Karoline Leavitt, who is now Trump's Campaign spokesperson. As the video ends she tells Project 2025 trainees that if they need any help to just contact her. B-Block (23:57) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The Republican House Candidate accused, as a cop, of handcuffing an infant. RFK Junior hires somebody to program political ads to you based on data on your phone. And baseball's new low: the Mets' ceremonial first pitch was thrown out by the Hawk Tuah woman. I presume she threw a spitball. C-Block (33:10) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: It's got everything: Suspense, Baseball, Red Barber, a story that was turned into a movie with Peter Sellers. It's "The Catbird Set."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Look, let's face it, our industry can have a bad reputation. And I can see why. Just scroll through YouTube or social media and you'll see self-appointed gurus shouting about tricks and hacks and shortcuts. But sustainably successful marketing is not about shortcuts, it's about digging into the very essence of what it means to be a human being.Sounds pompous, I know, but hear me out.Effective marketing deeply understands and portrays human realities, behaviors, and emotions. It connects authentically with people's experiences, desires, and needs. So when I read this lesson in a podcast guest application – ‘marketing is often about showcasing human truths' – I knew I had found a kindred spirit I wanted to sit down with and learn from Karuna Rawal, CMO and CRO, Nature's Fynd [https://www.naturesfynd.com/].Nature's Fynd has raised $500 million in funding since its founding in 2012. Backers include celebrity investors like Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, Al Gore, and Jack Ma; along with institutional investors like SoftBank and Blackstone.Rawal leads a team of 17 across Marketing, Sales, PR, Innovation, Culinary, Business Development and Creative – plus three agencies. Startups run fast and lean, she says. Here are some lessons from Rawal that emerged in our discussion:Marketing is often about showcasing human truthsWhere there's a will, there's a wayMarketing matters, even for legacy brandsSet a high bar for quality customer experiencesAlways choose to do the harder right thing than the easy wrong thing Align strategy with creativityDiscussed in this episodeCraft an AI strategy that resonates with your customers' human truth. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (06/25/2024): 3:05pm- During yesterday's show, Director of Strategic Communications at the Republican National Committee Tommy Pigott highlighted the difference between Donald Trump's weekend appearance in Philadelphia and Joe Biden's recent trip to the city—Trump left a $500 tip at Tony & Nick's Steaks, while Joe Biden got confused in a Wawa. Pigott explained: “If the Biden campaign actually wanted to put these concerns about Joe Biden to bed, they would put him out there more in unscripted environments—but they don't…Joe Biden cannot do anything without being perpetually confused.” Will Biden be able to hold it together for 90-minutes during Thursday's debate? 3:20pm- Media Attacks Judge Aileen Cannon: In his latest opinion piece for The Wall Street Journal, William McGurn writes of the “vilification of Judge Cannon” by The New York Times's news division: “It's similar to the statement by 51 former intelligence operatives two weeks before the 2020 election that Hunter Biden's laptop “has all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation.” Their statement was sprinkled with caveats that didn't matter because its only job was to give Joe Biden something to get him through the last crucial days of the election.” You can read the full editorial here: https://www.wsj.com/articles/taking-down-judge-aileen-cannon-1c4bf9ab?mod=opinion_lead_pos9 3:35pm- During MSNBC's Morning Joe, host Joe Scarborough attacked the credibility of Judge Aileen Cannon—the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida judge who is overseeing Donald Trump's alleged mishandling of classified documents case. Similarly, while appearing on CNN, former White House Ethics Czar Norm Eisen questioned Judge Cannon's motives—suggesting she is simply doing the bidding of Donald Trump. Rich explains that the media is making a coordinated effort to delegitimize Judge Cannon. 3:45pm- Will Donald Trump be able to attend the Republican National Convention? On July 11th, Trump has his sentencing hearing for his conviction in the “hush money” trial involving payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels. Rich notes that Trump could—unjustly—be sentenced to house arrest or even prison time. The RNC convention begins on July 15th and ends on July 18th. 4:05pm- While appearing on CNN, National Press Secretary for the 2024 Trump Campaign Karoline Leavitt had her interview cut short by anchor Kasie Hunt. Hunt accused Leavitt of attacking her CNN colleagues Jake Tapper and Dana Bash by suggesting the two moderators of Thursday's debate have regularly expressed disdain for Donald Trump and support for Joe Biden. A montage pieced together by Newsbusters proves Leavitt's point—Tapper and Bash are not objective. One clip even shows Tapper referring to Trump's presidency as a “national nightmare.” 4:10pm- Nicholas Fondacaro of Newsbusters reports: “CNN could be facing a defamation liability rivaling or exceeding the $787 million Fox News paid out to Dominion Voting Systems. NewsBusters recently reported on Florida's First District Court of Appeals affirming that plaintiff Zachary Young could seek punitive damages, in addition to economic and emotional damages, from the Cable News Network in a civil trial after they allegedly defamed him regarding his work in getting people out of Afghanistan.” He continues: “The case hinges on CNN's use of the phrases ‘black market' and ‘exploited' to describe Young's legitimate business helping corporately sponsored Afghans escape the country as it collapsed around them and the Taliban retook control.” Fondacaro writes that Young ultimately saved 24 people. You can read the full article here: https://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/nb/nicholas-fondacaro/2024/06/24/cnn-could-be-forced-pay-upwards-1-billion-defamation-suit 4:30pm- A “fat beach day”? Yes, it's a real thing—and it's coming to New York as part of an effort to support body positivity. 4:40pm- MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell hilariously asked Biden Campaign spokesperson Adrienne Elrod whether it is a problem that all of President Joe Biden's debate advisers are “white men in their 60s.” 4:45pm- Could Black voters in Milwaukee determine the 2024 presidential election? Brakkton Booker of Politico writes: “Polls suggest the president is trailing his 2020 performance in [Milwaukee] and surrounding county. In Wisconsin's April Democratic primary, his performance within the city limits lagged well behind the rest of the state. There's one big reason why: Black voters in Milwaukee. An influential bloc that can determine if the state remains blue or flips this fall, these voters have serious and lingering doubts about Biden and whether he's delivered on his promises to them. There's no danger that Donald Trump will carry this historically Democratic city in November. But there is a considerable risk that an anemic showing in Milwaukee could cost Biden this critical swing state—and possibly the election.” You can read the full article here: https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2024/06/21/biden-black-voters-enthusiasm-gap-milwaukee-00163496 4:50pm- Zeoli Show History: For the first time ever, Rich compliments Matt's return music selection. 5:05pm- Could Black voters in Milwaukee determine the 2024 presidential election? For example, Democrat political strategist James Comer recently claimed that if Donald Trump wins, he will establish a “theocracy.” Meanwhile, Associate Editor of The Washington Post Ruth Marcus is predicting that the Supreme Court may “chip away at the right to same-sex marriage.” 5:25pm- Hillary Clinton is BACK! with a new book due to be released just weeks before the presidential election: "Something Lost, Something Gained: Reflections on Life, Love, and Liberty.” 5:40pm- BREAKING NEWS: A House Judiciary Committee investigation has found evidence suggesting “CIA contractors colluded with the Biden Campaign to discredit [the] Hunter Biden laptop story” ahead of the 2020 presidential election. You can read more details here: https://judiciary.house.gov/media/press-releases/new-information-shows-cia-contractors-colluded-biden-campaign-discredit-hunter 6:05pm- Rich has to leave early to host 1210 WPHT's Politics and Pints with New York Times best-selling author Jack Carr from Zlock Performing Arts Center Bucks County Community College in Newtown, Pennsylvania. America's Radio Guest Host Mike Opelka closes out the show! 6:15pm- Hillary Clinton is BACK! with a new book due to be released just weeks before the presidential election: "Something Lost, Something Gained: Reflections on Life, Love, and Liberty.” 6:30pm- Earlier this month, Attorney General Merrick Garland testified before the House Judiciary Committee. During one notable exchange, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) asked who—or what— gave Garland the authority to appoint special counsel Jack Smith? Judge Aileen Cannon—the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida judge handling Donald Trump's alleged mishandling of classified documents case—is considering whether Smith's appointment is legally invalid. 6:50pm- Over the weekend, Congressman Jamaal Bowman—perhaps best known for pulling a fire alarm in a Congressional office building—held a profanity laced rally in the Bronx. During the event, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio made sure she embarrassed herself as well by screaming and dancing on stage like a lunatic. Rep. Bowman may very well lose his primary battle to George Latimer later tonight.

CNN experienced a meteoric rise in the 1980s and 1990s. When CNN was being led by Ted Turner...the network was known as the most trusted name in news...while being the industry leader in cable news coverage. However...over the last two decades...CNN has seen a rapid decline. We discuss the rise and fall of CNN...and what ultimately led to the decline of the network. We compare the early days of CNN with Bernard Shaw and Larry King...to the modern CNN led by Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon. We discuss the lost credibility at CNN over the last two decades...and question if CNN is capable of rising again.

New masters, new direction: CNN fired Brian Stelter and cancelled his show Reliable Sources (which was on the air for 30 years) and then, on September 2nd, John Harwood, was pushed out the door as well.Cable News Network was the brainchild of Ted Turner and it was based on a revolutionary concept at the time, a concept that changed the notion that news could only be reported at fixed times throughout the day. CNN was the world's first 24-hour television news network, and it made its debut on June 1st 1980 from its HQ in Atlanta Georgia. As we said in the intro, in its first years of operation, CNN lost money and was ridiculed as the Chicken Noodle Network but they started growing, covering events all over the world LIVE and their audience grew. If you like our content, please become a patron. John Malone is a right-leaning billionaire libertarian, close friend of the Murdoch family, and key Warner Bros Discovery board member. In 2021, CNN at AT&T spined off and combined Warner Media with Discovery, so now CNN is a Warner Bros Discovery WBD entity. And with this change of corporate hands, came a new board and .. new masters. Both Brian Stelter and John Harwood described Donald Trump as a “demagogue” in their last appearances on the network. 1, 2 John Malone, a Fox News fan and Trump donor, has deep and longstanding ties with David Zaslav, the CEO of WBD. In an interview with CNBC in 2021, John Malone said, “I would like to see CNN evolve back to the kind of journalism that it started with, and actually have journalists, which would be unique and refreshing.” 3 He proposed a model: “Fox News, in my opinion, has followed an interesting trajectory of trying to have ‘news' news, I mean some actual journalism, embedded in a program schedule of all opinions.” Hen also said, according to Vox, that “a time of change” is coming.. Is CNN turning into Fox News Light? Malone has denied he is “directly involved” in any decisions about CNN, but multiple current and former staffers who spoke to journalists are indicating that Malone is indirectly dictating an agenda to Chris Licht, the newly installed CNN boss. 4 1. News wasn't always readily available at the click of a button. Ted Turner forever changed that in 1980 when he brought the Cable News Network to life. In this episode, hosts Cole and Bill Smead are joined by Lisa Napoli, author of the book Up All Night: Ted Turner, CNN and the Birth of 24-Hour News. Lisa shares incredible insight into the life of Ted Turner and how the media mogul rolled the dice with the launch of CNN. She also discusses the evolution of cable news, its transition from “pure-play journalism” to “theatrics”, and what the 24-hour news cycle might look like in the future.

Mobile Suit Breakdown is written, recorded, and produced within Lenapehoking, the ancestral and unceded homeland of the Lenape, or Delaware, people. Before European settlers forced them to move west, the Lenape lived in New York City, New Jersey, and portions of New York State, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Connecticut. Lenapehoking is still the homeland of the Lenape diaspora, which includes communities living in Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and Ontario. You can learn more about Lenapehoking, the Lenape people, and ongoing efforts to honor the relationship between the land and indigenous peoples by visiting the websites of the Delaware Tribe and the Manhattan-based Lenape Center. Part two of our program on The Sheppard Murder case which spawned the American “Trial of The Century” before OJ. A physician is suspected of murdering his wife in a quiet, affluent 1950s Midwestern bedroom community. Did Sam Sheppard kill Marilyn Sheppard? That is the topic of this week's edition of Unpleasant Dreams. --- Cassandra Harold is your host. EM Hilker is our principal writer and researcher with additional writing by Cassandra Harold. Jim Harold is our Executive Producer. Unpleasant Dreams is a production of Jim Harold Media. A copy of EM Hilker's original article can be found HERE -PODCAST TRANSCRIPT- Perhaps the most thorough and well-balanced of the Sheppard trials was the one held long, long after Marilyn Reese Sheppard's death. In the first installment of this saga, we discussed the first trial of her husband and accused killer, Sam, some of the questionable decisions made by the trial judge, and the media circus that surrounded it; we also explored briefly his retrial in the 1960s where the evidence intended to prove Sam's motive was kept from the jury and where the science of the time, much of which has been debunked over the roughly 40 years since the retrial, favoured Sam's innocence. This was the opportunity, in many ways, to finally reach the truth; a sequestered jury untainted by a riotous media, the benefits of the 50 years of advancement in both biological and behavioral sciences , and all the evidence on the table, At last, the chance to accurately assess whether or not Sam H. Sheppard murdered his wife. FOR THE REST OF THE TRANSCRIPT CLICK HERE – FURTHER READING AND SOURCES – Affleck, John. “Bailey Testifies in Sheppard Case.” AP NEWS, Associated Press, 16 Feb. 2000. In July of 2012, two young cousins went for a summer bike ride and never returned back home. Lyric Cook-Morrissey, 10, and Elizabeth Collins, 8 vanished from Evansdale, Iowa, and wouldn’t be seen for months. Their bodies were eventually found by hunters, but their killer has never been caught. There have been many suspects throughout the years, and even a possible connection to the Delphi murders, but their case remains unsolved. Andrea Yates appeared to have it all - she was intelligent, athletic, married to a NASA engineer, and had five beautiful children. One morning, after her husband left for work, that all changed. Looking back, one could say that Laos was in an interesting place during World War II. The country was occupied by two forces, both allied and axis powers while simultaneously fighting off Thai forces near the border, underwent internal struggles due to the conflicting ideals of members of the royal family, and the country was involved in one of the most disastrous bombing tactics in the History of the World. Yet, despite these incident, the country still managed to fight their way towards eventual independence in the late 1970s. References 1. In June 1980, US media mogul Ted Turner launched the first TV station dedicated to 24 hour news, Cable News Network or CNN. Some were sceptical that there would be enough news to stay on air, others warned that the public wouldn't be interested in news 24 hours a day. But it marked a shift in broadcast journalism and paved the way for many more rolling news stations across the world. Rebecca Kesby has been speaking to Senior Executive at CNN, Rick Davis, about how 24 hour news has influenced politics and what role it has to play in holding those in power to account. Rick also takes us back behind the scenes to when he was an output producer on launch day, June 1st 1980.

The Calgary Zoo in Canada is sending two giant pandas back to China due to a shortage of bamboo. The zoo said in a statement that it usually flies in bamboo from China to feed the animals, but the Covid-19 pandemic had disrupted flights and caused delays in supplies. The duo, named Er Shun and Da Mao, were supposed to stay in Canada until 2023 as part of a 10-year agreement with China, but the zoo decided to send them back early out of concern that delays could worsen if there's a second wave of coronavirus cases.A panda's diet consists almost entirely of fresh bamboo, the Calgary Zoo said, and the animals typically eat about 40 kilograms (88 pounds) of it each day.Much of the bamboo Er Shun and Da Mao ate before the pandemic was flown in directly to Calgary from China, but those flights have been canceled. The zoo said it tried to find new bamboo suppliers to keep the pandas fed, but encountered several logistical issues. They also worry that these new supply lines could be disrupted at a moment's notice, leaving the pandas completely without food."We believe the best and safest place for Er Shun and Da Mao to be during these challenging and unprecedented times is where bamboo is abundant and easy to access," the president and CEO of the Calgary Zoo, Dr. Clément Lanthier, said in a statement. "This was an incredibly difficult decision to make but the health and well-being of the animals we love and care for always comes first."Er Shun and Da Mao arrived in Canada in 2014 and spent five years at the Toronto Zoo before moving to Calgary in March 2018 with cubs Jia Panpan and Jia Yueyue, the Calgary Zoo said. Those cubs have been moved to China, CNN media partner CBC reported.Lanthier told CBC that the zoo began the process to move the pandas a few weeks ago and hopes to have permits approved this week, though he would like to see the process expedited.Giant pandas are among some of the rarest animals on the planet, though efforts to preserve the species have shown some success in recent years. In 2016, the giant panda's status was upgraded from "endangered" to "vulnerable" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. There are only an estimated 1,864 of them living in the wild, according to the World Wildlife Fund.China has for years sent giant pandas abroad as a sign of friendship and cooperation between Beijing and other countries as part of a campaign known as "panda diplomacy," offering foreigners a chance to see these animals in person while also fostering ties between governments.The-CNN-Wire™ & © 2020 Cable News Network, Inc., a WarnerMedia Company. Don't drink bleach. That seems obvious like along the lines of don't go swimming when there's lightning or run for president when you have no interest in governing. But yet countless cleaning products had to take to social media discouraging users from drinking them because Donald Trump said it could knock out coronavirus. Where did he get this "tremendous" idea? Co-hosts Beth and Kelly talk about the possible origins of Dr. Trump's most recent batshittery in today's episode. And please, don't drink bleach. The Oscars are making what's described as a one-time-only concession by allowing movies initially made available via streaming or video on demand to compete for best picture in next year's awards. The decision came from the board for the group that presides over the Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, also made several other changes to the awards process, among them the consolidation of sound editing and sound mixing into one "sound" category. The Academy cited the forced closure of theatres due to the Covid-19 pandemic, noting that only movies with a "previously planned theatrical release" would be eligible. Previously, films needed to have at least a week-long theatrical run in order to qualify for consideration. In a statement, Academy president David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson stressed that the organization's commitment to the theatrical experience is "unchanged and unwavering." The Academy has faced pressure to relax its rules as Netflix, especially, pushes for inclusion in the awards competition.Director Steven Spielberg, among other high-profile members, has spoken out about maintaining the distinction between streaming and theatrical releases. The date for the 93rd annual Academy Awards remains Feb. 28 of next year, although the Academy acknowledged that additional changes might be necessary, "based on national guidelines, state-mandated government orders and Academy-determined best practices."After low ratings for this year's Oscars, the board approved several additional procedural changes, among them allowing all members to vote in the international feature film category, formerly known as best foreign-language film. The Academy also announced that the current award season will be the last in which studios are allowed to distribute DVD screeners to voters. Citing environmental concerns, distribution of will shift to digital versions in 2021.The-CNN-Wire™ & © 2020 Cable News Network, Inc., a WarnerMedia Company. All rights reserved.
America's "doctors" don't seem to be dispensing the best advice during the coronavirus pandemic. Dr. Oz says opening up schools is appetizing. Dr. Phil says more people die crashing cars into swimming pools yet we don't close the country for that. And Dr. Drew downplayed the virus for weeks. Strange Country co-hosts Beth and Kelly talk about these purveyors of quackery disguised as medical expertise, and Beth gets very real about her feelings. The survival chances of young orca whales are boosted by the presence of their grandmothers, especially in times of food scarcity, according to new research that offers a clue as to the evolutionary purpose of menopause. While female orcas normally stop reproducing in their 30s and 40s, they can live for many decades following menopause, said the study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Monday.Scientists analysed 36 years of data from the Center for Whale Research on killer whales in Canada and the United States. They found that post-reproductive whales were especially important because they were the most knowledgeable when it came to hunting."The death of a post-menopausal grandmother can have important repercussions for her family group," said Dan Franks, senior author of the study and a professor of biology at the University of York.He added that breeding grandmothers were less capable of providing the same level of support to baby calves, as they were busy taking care of their own offspring. The study also revealed that orca calves that had lost their grandmothers were more likely to die than those who were accompanied by them. The impact on a calf of losing a post-menopausal grandmother was also highest in years when the whales' prey salmon was scarce. Orcas are among only a small number of mammals known to go through menopause."Our new findings show that just as in humans, grandmothers that have gone through menopause are better able to help their grand offspring," said Darren Croft, a professor from the University of Exeter who participated in the study."These benefits to the family group can help explain why menopause has evolved in killer whales just as it has in humans."The research could provide important assessments relating to the conversation of the killer whale population, which has faced growing threats from the decline of food sources and climate change. The southern resident killer whales, which were featured in the research, have been listed as an endangered species by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), a US-based nature conservation group.The-CNN-Wire™ & © 2019 Cable News Network, Inc., a WarnerMedia Company. Darrell Castle talks about the arrogance of the news media and CNN's attack on the free speech and privacy rights of Mr. Han A. Solo and by implication all Americans. Transcript CNN—CONSIDER THE SOURCE Hello this is Darrell Castle with today's Castle Report. Today is Friday July 21, 2017 and on Today's report we will be talking about the incredible losing streak CNN has been on for the last couple of weeks and what the Cable News Network has done this time. But first let's talk about some of the things that have been happening in the world since I talked to you last week. My wife and I flew to Los Angeles immediately after posting last week's report to see our daughter and son-in-law. She had quite a weekend planned for us with some interesting people. We saw Tony Bennett at the Hollywood Bowl. Tony is in his 90's now but he still puts on a great show. Meanwhile, in Europe, Hamburg Germany hosted the G-20 summit which also turned out to be quite a show. Tens of thousands of protesters, estimated 30-40 thousand, poured into the streets These Antifa or Anti-Fascists are becoming more fascist by the day it seems. Antifa mobs burned cars, attacked police, and attacked anyone they considered to be not one of them. They also burned and looted businesses. The mayor of New York City, Bill DeBlasio, was right there with them strutting through the streets of Hamburg, hating the police, hating America, and most of all hating Donald Trump. The protesters reserved their strongest hatred for capitalism which they blamed for causing the things they hate namely prosperity and liberty. Capitalism is the greatest engine of prosperity for the greatest number of people that has yet existed therefore they hate it. Why would these people burn and loot businesses; because they are Communists and Communists are thieves. They are totalitarian thieves but they usually want to legitimize their theft by the use of what they call democracy. This year, 2017, is the 100th anniversary of the rise of communism in the Soviet Union with its roughly 100 million deaths it is not something to march in the streets in support of. Fortunately that is not what we are here to report today. We have something far more interesting to discuss and that is The Cable News Network (CNN). For the last few weeks CNN has been making more news than it has been reporting. First, the network had to back away from a couple of stories linking Trump officials to Russia, and a few executives were fired as a result. Here's a little background on the real story of today's report in case you haven't heard it. Several years ago, long before he became president, Donald Trump did a professional wrestling show with Vince McMahan, the head of the professional wrestling organization that put the show on. It was billed as the battle of the billionaires and Mr. Trump was supposed to fight or wrestle Vince McMahan. Mr. Trump was the winner and McMahan took quite a beating. It was all for show of course and everyone knew it. Fast forward until present day when a clever internet user took the fight video and superimposed CNN's logo over Vince McMahan's head so that it looked like President Trump was pummeling CNN. When President Trump saw it he sent it back out through his own social media account and it went, as they say, viral. Instead of just laughing it off with a comment about how clever it was the arrogant and self righteous people at CNN took it upon themselves to hunt down a private citizen who was well within his legal rights and apparently blackmail or coerce that person into a groveling apology. The internet user went under the name HanA…Solo. The letter A was actually the common term for rectum but I will refer to him as Han A. In case you haven't watched a movie in the last 50 years or so, Han Solo is a character from the Star Wars series of movies. A CNN official named Andrew Kaczynski took it upon himself to hunt down HanASolo and discover his real name so he could unleash CNN's m...

This week, Online Editor Anthony Zangrillo is joined by Special Guest Maximilian Kempf to discuss the impact of Davide Carbone v. Cable News Network. Carbone was the chief executive of West Palm Beach, Fla.-based St. Mary's Medical Center until CNN reported in June 2015 that the infant mortality rate for open-heart surgery at the hospital was three times the national average. After aggressive coverage by CNN, he was later forced to resign. Carbone subsequently filed a defamation lawsuit and CNN attempted to strike the lawsuit. U.S. District Judge Orinda Evans ended up rendering Georgia's anti-SLAPP legislation ineffectual. Many states have anti-SLAPP statutes in the interest of guarding against frivolous lawsuits attacking First Amendment activity. Under these SLAPP statutes, plaintiffs have to show a likelihood of prevailing before the case moves any further. In this case, the judge utilized a mere plausibility standard, rather than probability. Under plausibility, plaintiffs will have less hurdles to overcome and move further to discovery. The podcast explores the ramifications of this decision, and the policy arguments for both parties. The Motion Picture Association of America even submitted an amicus brief in this case, likely foreseeing how this decision could make it easier to bring stolen script claims against movie studios. From there, the conversation points to how this decision actually aligns with Trump's threat to open up libel laws and looks to how possible "fake news" claims should be litigated under the current law. As a fun aside, Kyrie Irving's belief that the Earth is flat is discussed as well as the infamous Oscar 2017 "Best Picture" mishap.
Welcome to Real Fast Results! We have a great show lined up for you today. I have my good buddy, and mentor, Mr. Mike Stewart. We’re here to chat about something that’s cutting edge. If you want to develop your business so that you are “head and shoulders” above what your competitors are doing, or are willing to do, then you’re in the right place. Throughout this episode, we’ll be talking about building up your platform, your list, and the ways that you connect with the market you serve. More importantly, you’re going to learn how to go about doing this with live video! Mike Stewart has over 40 years of commercial/television experience and production. He definitely knows how to produce quality television. I really do appreciate Mike taking the time to help share his expertise with us. Take it away, Mike! Embrace Live Video My passion is helping the world understand how audio and video is now being transmitted into people’s pockets. The result that I feel people should take away from this podcast is that getting content to your community and your audience has never been easier or faster. There’s also never been a bigger reach than there is today. You have to understand that when I got my start, there was no Internet to turn to. We are living in a very exciting time when it comes to communicating with audiences, especially since the principles of television haven’t changed and the production standards haven’t changed. The pipeline has changed. Forty years ago, even if you had millions or billions of dollars that it took to pay for the technology and the team you needed to get your message heard around the world, most people wouldn’t even have had the opportunity. Nowadays, for less than the cost of a few bottles of wine or a trip to a fine restaurant, you could broadcast your content, in high definition, to the world. Your message can simply fall into the pockets of individuals who can follow you, like you, trust you, and ultimately, become paying customers of yours. That’s why it’s an exciting time, and it’s not about just live video either. It’s just that the makers of this technology, such as Facebook, Periscope, and so forth, all see that this pipeline is the way that human beings should receive the content. The Principle of Television says that once you have built an audience, then you have the ability to advertise, which in turn results in profits, connections, and business. You should embrace live video. It’s a powerful opportunity that is staring people in the face, and yet, most people don’t even realize that it’s there for the taking. Implementation Steps First and foremost, you need to understand that live video is based around mobile technology (i.e. Smartphones & tablets). We’ve had online video for over 15 years now, but that required a desktop computer or a laptop. Today, we have what’s called Smartphones, but let’s call it what it is. It’s really a computer, but in fact, the Smartphones of today are 10 times more powerful than the computer that got people on the moon. So, you’re carrying around an extremely potent device in your pocket. Step 1 – Download Free Apps The very first step that you need to take is to download the free apps that will allow you start practicing. If you’ve never gone live before, this is a big road block. You have to get over the fact that you’re looking into a camera and talking to people. You’ll need: Facebook app Facebook Pages Manager app Periscope app Blab app YouTube Connect app There are a lot of players in this pipeline, but the principles of television are the same across the board. In other words, they are the same ones that were started back in the 1940’s, when television became the new pipeline for media and advertising. The great thing about this is that you no longer have to go out and buy millions of dollars worth of equipment. You already own it. Not only do you have the world’s most incredible camera in your pocket, you’ve got the software given to you by companies like Facebook, YouTube, Google, etc. So, get started by practicing and getting comfortable about being an expert and an authority in your market so that you can talk into the lens of a camera. That’s Step #1, and you can start that right now at no cost. If you are an entrepreneur and you’re not doing this, you’re missing the opportunity of a lifetime. Step 2 – Learn the Elements of Television Step number two is to learn the elements of television. Anybody in the world could take a smartphone out of their pocket and start creating a selfie video. However, to come across as a professional, you do need to know the elements of television, which are actually very basic. You need to do a little bit of show-prep beforehand, and really think about the content that you’re going to create. What problem are you going to talk about, and what solution are you going to share with your audience? Every successful radio and television show since this industry began has had a staff of writers and production people. They also always had a system in place to ensure that they made the best show possible every time they did one. On top of that, they constantly strived to improve what they were doing and up their game. Yes, it is possible for you to turn on your camera and just start talking, but you’re probably not going to build a very big audience this way. In real television and radio, if your ratings are horrible, your show is going to get cancelled. This is why it’s important to begin with some show-prep. You need to think about specifics and make decisions accordingly. For instance, you may decide that every morning you are going to do a live show at 9 am EST every Monday morning for 30 minutes, and each week you are going to have incredible content that completely blows people away, answers people’s questions, and provides them with great solutions. The minute you finish one show, you’ll need to start prepping for the next one, and the next one, and so on. I like to study late night television. They are constantly trying to have the best guests and the most awesome routines. Further, they create elements that become familiar and are liked by their audience. If you want to know how to do this in the best possible way, you’ll want to study highly rated television shows, and talk shows in particular. Take a close look at what they are doing because it’s all based on principles that have been proven over the span of decades. Johnny Carson created the same late-night television format that has worked for 50 years, and the reason it does work so well is because people like it. I was fortunate enough, in 1980, to produce a record for Ted Turner called “He Was Cable When Cable Wasn’t Cool.” Ted Turner… They used to call him ‘The Mouth of the South’ because he was here from Atlanta. A guy named Bob Neal and Ted Turner hired me to produce this record. You can watch the video below. There’s about a 3-second clip of me when I was 25 years old. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9K0J12W0hcw?rel=0&showinfo=0] It was the 1980’s… a long, long time ago, but I was amidst hearing Ted Turner say something that we all need to pay attention to. He walked into the session that night and he said,”‘You know what I’m going to do? I’m going to build a 24-hour a day news channel and put it up on satellite.” And, I sat there as a 25-year-old and said, ‘”Who’s going to watch the news 24 hours a day?” I was young and dumb. Ted Turner had had a vision for CNN way back then, and I just downplayed it. You know, TBS was Ted’s. He bought the local TV station, Channel 17, which later became the Super-station, TBS. And he said, “You know? We’ve got over 7 million subscribers to WTBS. That’s more than any local station in the United States.’” I remember going, “Wow! Seven million people can watch our local TV station.” That didn’t mean they were watching… that means the reach through cable, satellite networks and cable TV subscribers were only 7 million people. With podcasts, with live Facebook, with Periscope, you have a reach right now, every one of you, of 7 billion, plus, and growing. It took years of marketing and consistency to get people to start tuning into CNN. It also took a lot of money, technology, and teams to make this happen. The different elements of television were all implemented in order to make CNN the brand that it is today. It’s imperative that you have a vision and that you plan out how to make that vision a reality if you want to create anything lasting out of all of this. Back in 1980, Ted Turner had the resources, the money, and the team to reach the world via satellite. That’s why it was called “Cable News Network”. That was the pipeline that only wealthy people, like Ted Turner, could reach. You can do it with a $50 microphone and a computer today. Great Content Is the Key It’s wonderful that this pipeline is now available to everyone. However, you have to remember that it was the content that made the networks become hits. It was the writing, the prep work, and the forethought. They thoroughly thought about what their audience would embrace. That’s what you need to take away from this. The pipeline has been given to you for free, and the stars have come about using YouTube, podcasts, and so on. The new horizon is going live. There are two big benefits to going live. The minute you’re done, your content is done, and you can build an audience. Eight o’clock on Sunday nights, America used to tune into The Ed Sullivan Show. People flocked by the millions to view this show because they knew that the show would have amazing content, as it did each and every week. That’s just one of many examples that could be provided, but it does illustrate how a TV show can capture people’s attention so well and make completely devoted fans of them. You should strive to provide content that people can depend on and enjoy with each show you produce. That means you’ll need to prep for your shows and you need to consistently deliver quality content. If you’re not willing to commit to that, then the product that you produce won’t last. It’s all well and good to play around and publicize silly, slightly entertaining content, like that which one sees on social media all of the time nowadays. If you want business, however, you’re going to need to utilize some of the systems that TV has been following for years. How to Prep for Shows and Provide Consistency You’ve got to know your audience. In television and radio, they use focus groups. Basically, this is just a way to go about interviewing the audience you are targeting and asking them what it is that they want. You can easily do this kind of thing online now. You can email people and survey them to find out what they would like. That’s show prep. When you know what your audience wants, you can deliver those things with your content. You might think that you already know what they want, but you may be wrong. That’s why you need to survey them and ask them questions. The entertainment industry is a slightly different animal. They use focus groups to try out different angles, and when they find a winner, everyone copycats it. The information you are being provided today focuses on how business owners can use live streaming and other forms of video content to share their expertise and better reach their audience of potential clients and customers. There was a “blab” that interested me. An attorney was speaking with a social media personality. The social media person was asking the attorney if it was legal to play music in his live streams. This was a very good show, because it answered questions that people had about the legal aspects of copyrights. The makers of this show surely crafted the content around questions that people were asking, and addressing those needs was what made the show a hit with me and most likely the rest of the viewers that day. In fact, the podcast episode that this very text is based upon addresses the questions surrounding why live video was so important in this day and age. You can do the same with just about any topic. Find out what people want to know, and then get an expert to answer those questions on your video, podcast, live streaming, etc. Live video is the fastest and easiest way to create content. When you get good at going live, your content will be done in the speediest way possible. As I mentioned earlier, I am big fan of late night television. You can learn a lot by watching these pros. I went to watch David Letterman about six times while they were shooting it. The main purpose I had for attending was to watch how these shows are made. It took a team of 50 people, and these guys had the process down. The best part about it was that if the show started at 4:30 pm, it was done by 5:30. Since they pre-taped these shows, if something major got screwed up, they could stop and edit it out. Still, 99 times out of 100, what happened within that 60-minute time frame was what aired that night in the show’s time slot. The magic of live television is that it’s fast and the content requires no editing. The minute you’re done, you’re done. Shows like this aren’t expected to be perfect, and late night television is never scripted. Part of what’s so entertaining about it is that no one knows what’s going to happen. The host has a series of questions, and if the people are good guests, the content will be good. I recommend that you watch what people do on these successful TV shows and emulate that to the best of your ability. It’s also very important that you prep well for your shows. Just these two little tips will allow you to surpass a large majority of your competition. It’s also quite imperative that you stay consistent with your show, especially when it comes to how you schedule your episodes. Of course, when and for how long you host your shows is totally up to you. However, I recommend having a show that’s no less than 15 minutes long, held once a week. Remember, one of the reasons why The Ed Sullivan Show was so successful was because people knew it was going to come on at the same time each week, and people made sure that they were there to view it. A big difference between one of these types of shows and one of your own is that you can monetize your own show better than CBS could back in the day because there’s much less overhead involved for you nowadays. Another advantage that we have today is that live streaming allows for more interaction. You can’t really interact with most television shows, but with live streaming, you are able to submit questions, make comments, and even shape what goes on in the show to a certain degree. You can even challenge what’s being said. This helps to make these types of shows even more entertaining and informative. Types of Microphones A different type of advantage that we have today is that you can purchase studio-quality equipment very inexpensively. A good place to find great microphones, in particular, is Sweetwater.com. If you don’t have much of a budget, that’s okay. You can still call a rep and let them know what your budget is. There are so many different microphones out there, and you can find them available at all types of different price ranges. Many of the inexpensive ones are still high-quality and can do just about as good of a job as the more expensive ones. Now, you don’t want to use a poor-quality microphone for your videos, live streaming, etc. One of my favorite types of microphones is the Apogee iPad/iPhone mic. It is built and designed to plug directly into your Apple mobile devices. This microphone costs around $200, but it’s as good as any studio microphone I’ve ever used. No matter what you decide to use, don’t skimp on buying a good-quality mic. Again, there are some cheaper versions that work just as well as the more expensive ones, but you should really take some time to shop around and make sure that you are getting something that will give you the best quality sound. The iRig HD is also a quality mic that you can use. You can plug it into your computer’s USB port or even into your iPad or iPhone. One of the things that makes this particular mic so great is that it’s very forgiving, meaning that it really only picks up your voice, even if there’s a lot of background noise going on. You know, you’re never going to eliminate that completely, but for the most part, your voice comes through clearly and a lot of the background noise is eliminated. How to Get Started Keep in mind that you don’t have to use a great microphone to practice. The built in microphones on most smart devices are very good. One thing that you might try is practicing on Facebook Live because you can do this by yourself and not have to go public until you get comfortable. You can start right now by using your smartphone and Facebook Live to practice. Also, if you don’t have a business page on Facebook, you should build one today. It’s okay to use your regular profile to be social, but you’ll need a business page if you want to be professional. Then, you can start streaming live to that page or to a closed business group for practice. Practice privately and look at your results. You can also practice in front of an open group or send your streaming video to an event page, if you like. All of these things are free to use on Facebook, and if you send your streaming to a closed group or a business page with no one on it yet, you can practice privately. This is a great way to start. For your first step, you’ll want to get the Facebook Pages Manager app so that you can set up a business page and practice live streaming to it. The Facebook app is a wonderful app to use for this because it allows you to switch between the cameras in your phone. A mistake that people make a lot in their live streaming is that they are constantly on camera. That’s not quality filming. If you’ve ever paid attention to the camera work as you watch TV, then you know that the visual is constantly changing, even on talk shows and the news. The cameras never stay on the same image for more than 10 seconds. Our eyes get tired of seeing the same image for any longer than that, so you should always switch between images and angles every 7-10 seconds, at the most. That’s a television principle that you need to follow. When you are filming with a mobile device, you should never hold it in your hand as you do so. Keep that in mind as well. Use some sort of selfie stick, tripod, or mount. It’s okay to take a selfie photo, but selfie videos look unprofessional. When you try to hold a camera as you’re filming, it shakes too much. This is true for even the steadiest-handed people. You don’t want to make your audience members nauseous, so get some sort of mount for your camera. These are dirt-cheap and can help you to make much better-looking videos. One tool that you might try is the iPad Tablet Mount. You can attach any tablet to this tripod, regardless of the size. Part of your prep-work is going to be setting up a nice background for your shoot. You can shoot your video or live stream recording in an office setting or something like that, but it needs to be clean and well-lit. You should have lighting on your face, and there shouldn’t be too many shadows lurking in the background. Again, you should also be free of the camera you are using, not trying to hold it yourself. You really can just use your cell phone to do this sort of thing, if you’ll just invest in a couple of little tools to make your video quality a bit better. Again, all of this advice is based upon television principles that have been around since the 40’s. There are five elements of television that I like to teach people. If you’re not using these, then your videos will be lower quality than most television programs. The elements you need to apply are: Changing Scenes – Never focus on a single image for any length of time. Watch 60 Minutes. When someone talks, the camera switches to the next guy, and then it goes back to the interviewer. After that, the camera may move to a cutaway shot. The view is constantly changing. Good, Close-Mic Audio – Many people make the mistake of being too far from the microphone, and this makes the audio sound poor and echoic. Lower Third Text – This just means that any text you use should be located within the lower-third portion of the screen. Music – You should include theme songs, musical transitions, and the like in your videos and streams. The only trick to this is that you have to use royalty-free music or music you have a license to. Sound Effects – People forget how powerful sound effects can be. Things like the chirping of crickets at night are little things that no one pays attention to, but subliminally at least, they make a difference. Movie and television producers painstakingly take the time to create that illusion of reality with sound. There are ways that you can include all five of these in your live streams in order to make the best-quality content possible. If you weren’t aware of these things, now you are. You can’t say that you didn’t know about them. Connect with Mike You can actually go to MikeStewartPodcast.com.
