“Just keep going, it will change.” This is Elizabeth Collins's burnout story, simplified into six words. The Cait-proclaimed Burnout Witch, Elizabeth now specializes in helping others recover from burnout. However, she was only able to truly thrive in this role after confronting her own feelings of not-enough-ness and developing the boundaries and coping skills she needed to regain a sense of balance in both body and brain.    Elizabeth is the owner and director of The East West Company, an integrative wellness practice specializing in burnout recovery coaching, functional medicine, acupuncture and more. Elizabeth explains that functional medicine is a crossover between biomedicine and Eastern medicine; it uses a wide range of testing to identify and address the root cause of a presenting issue. Because the incredible breadth of functional medicine testing can seem overwhelming to someone who is burnt out, Elizabeth suggests starting simple with a blood panel and a stool test. This approach helps individuals correct any initial imbalances, which sets them on a more manageable path towards burnout recovery.   Tune into this week's episode of FRIED. The Burnout Podcast to hear more about the intersections between functional medicine and burnout. Learn about the ins and outs of leaky gut, why Elizabeth uses tarot cards to broaden her clients' perspectives, and why feelings of gratitude and frustration can and should co-exist.   Quotes “I had ‘Big T' trauma, so that very much set me up for a lifetime of perfectionism, a lifetime of not really understanding that I am worthy of love simply because I exist.” (04:00-04:10) “My burnout story was: ‘just keep going, it will change.'” (07:26-07:32)  “That happens to people who are chronic people pleasers, who are prone to burnout….It's very easy for you to set aside what you like because you're more concerned about what needs to happen now, and it's like, but what you like is what needs to happen now!” (10:49-11:05) “[Functional medicine] is kind of like if biomedicine and Eastern medicine had a baby.” (15:14-15:17) “When we're in burnout, it's very difficult to see anything other  than what we're focusing on, which is usually panic, stress and anxiety. And the benefit when I started reading my own tarot cards again was...oh, this card popped up and it means this. How does that relate to my current situation? What is it about this card that can give me the opportunity to stop focusing on the minutia and look at the bigger picture?” (31:28-31:55)  “Being able to address different aspects of your personality and speak to them directly like they're individuals gives a sense of agency to the experience, and it really gives people the opportunity to fully integrate those personalities.” (36:28-36:42) “We are complicated enough individuals that we can feel very bad about something that we're going through and still be very grateful for the good things that it gives us or the other good things in our life….They're not mutually exclusive, and the idea that we have to inhabit one thing at any given time is unsustainable and unfair and will absolutely perpetuate burnout.” (38:00-38:28) “If you have symptoms or you are living a life that is in your experience suboptimal, but in the greater perspective not catastrophic....you are not crazy, and there is help.” (49:10-49:35)   Links https://insighttimer.com/  www.theeastwestco.com  www.instagram.com/theeastwestco  www.instagram.com/thevintagemystic    XOXO, C   If you know that it's time to actually DO something about the burnout cycle you've been in for too long - book your free consult today: bit.ly/callcait

Burnout isn't an overnight phenomenon. It compounds slowly – often imperceptibly – over time and when it shows up can often be crippling. That's where Elizabeth Collins – aka “The Burnout Witch” – comes in. On this episode of She Turned Entrepreneur we hear about her journey from an education and early career in western-based health care to an evolving eastern practice that includes acupuncture and tarot cards. It's a very specific niche that Elizabeth fully owns, and she coaches others in the integrative and functional medicine space to do the same! Entrepreneurship starts with knowing ourselves, our values and the value we bring to the world, so much of Elizabeth's practice is devoted to establishing that clear sense of self and boundaries. She uses values exercises (links for which are provided) and also offers key strategies for staving off encroaching burnout. Something as simple as a coffee mug that makes you smile can serve a protective function. Without intentionality, our bodies and spirits are subject to burnout. So whether we come to entrepreneurialism deliberately or, like Elizabeth, through a somewhat meandering path, it's critically important that we protect our core beliefs. “It took me a long time to learn who I am in order to know what I need in my business,” she says. Once our mission is clearly defined, we're freed up to bring our best – and truest – selves to the fore! Click here to listen to, rate and review this or previous She Turned Entrepreneur episodes. Here are key takeaways from the conversation:· Entrepreneurship can be something you land on by chance rather than by design.· Do you have burnout? There are therapies to help you recover. · If you've tried to meditate without success, it may be your brain is stuck in overwhelm.· Set intentional boundaries that recognize intrusion and minimize burnout.· The Power of a Coffee Mug: Creating a safe space helps fend off burnout.· Answering texts at midnight? It's perfectly normal to have standard business hours. In fact, your clients will respect you for it.· Ready to live into your values? Here's a step-by-step Values Exercise.· Here's a social media tip: If creating content exhausts you, consider tagging screen shots of work you endorse and adding your own take on why it's worthwhile.· Whatever product, skill or service you offer is uniquely your own – so brand it that way! Here's a quick look into the episode:· Elizabeth's early experience working within the traditional western health care framework morphed into an interest in alternative integrative techniques for sustained wellness.· Acupuncturists are de facto entrepreneurs because they constitute a small sector without well-defined platforms.· About the blend of functional medicine, acupuncture and coaching that Elizabeth offers.· A closer look at burnout: o Prevention looks like:§ Modulating diet.§ Integrating exercise.§ Meditation.§ Curating a safe, comfortable environment.o Treatment looks like:§ Finding ways to undo damage that shuts down brain function.§ Addressing underlying physiological and emotional imbalances.§ Assessing vitamin and mineral levels.§ Putting in place modest, small steps towards meditation.· How to distinguish the difference between burnout vs. general fatigue vs. depression:o Depression feels like a weighted blanket, tamping down everything.o Burnout tends to be more situational and tied to identifiable responses to things like the constant pinging of your email. · The challenges in jumping from a medical career into an entrepreneurial orientation:o Acupuncture practices aren't prevalent so there was no ready template.o Elizabeth's studies didn't include any business training.o It was all too easy to follow “accepted” business practices that were out of alignment with Elizabeth's values and interests.o Boundaries had to be set around things like business hours.· Elizabeth and Dori talk about the importance of establishing personal core values and parameters around things like networking and social media.· The more Elizabeth has embraced her very specific niche and mix of east-west orientation, the more successful she has been with her brand.· Advice for aspiring entrepreneurs and coaches in the wellness space:o Do a values exercise to establish priorities.o Get very clear about who you are and the boundaries you want to set. o Know deeply that what you offer the world is 100% unique.· Recommended Reading:o "The Bouncebackability Factor: End Burnout, Gain Resilience, and Change the World," by Caitlyn Donovan. And click here for a link for her free downloadable values exercise. o "Atlas of the Heart: Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience," by Brene Brown. And here's a link for her two-part values exercise. About Elizabeth:Elizabeth was a full time Emergency Medical Technician prior to obtaining her Master's degree from the Finger Lakes School of Acupuncture and Oriental medicine in Seneca Falls, New York. She is trained in both Chinese and Japanese styles of acupuncture. She completed an internship at the world renowned Zhejiang Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Hangzhou, P.R. China, and has comprehensive training in Zheng Gu Tui Na bodywork from Tom Bisio, L.Ac. in New York City. Additionally, she studied the treatment of acute and chronic pain at the EASTMedicine Seminar Series at the University of Westminster, London, UK. Dr. Elizabeth shares her grief and burnout stories which are very much intertwined. Grief is cumulative. Dr. Elizabeth shares how to process and feel Little G and Big G of grief. You can be grateful and disappointed at the same time, give yourself permission to feel your feelings. Take the word “but” out of your language and replace it with “and”. Boundaries and resentment are two huge parts of burnout recovery. In Chinese medicine, no emotions should go unprocessed: joy, worry, grief, fear, and anger. Journaling is a great way to start processing your emotions and elevate your mood. Nothing is off-limits, your experiences and feelings are ok. Susan talks about faith and hope. You can have faith in yourself or in anything you want (you don't need anyone's permission for it.) Dr. Elizabeth gives her advice: Do not forget the connection you have to yourself, to life, and sometimes even to grief, just breathe!    Resources Tendrilsofgrief.com Email Susan: susan@tendrilsofgrief.com   Meet Dr. Elizabeth Collins: Learn more about Dr. Elizabeth Collins The East West Company Follow Elizabeth on Instagram and Facebook   Elizabeth Collins is the owner and director of The East West Company, an integrative wellness practice specializing in burnout recovery coaching, functional medicine, acupuncture, and more.  She uses her combined backgrounds in both Eastern and biomedicines, as well as her training in hypnosis, to approach healing from a perspective that seeks to fully integrate the mind, body, and spirit.  After experiencing and recovering from burnout, she made it her mission to help others identify their values, explore their boundaries, and bring a sense of balance to both their body and brain.  When she's not working with clients, she's voraciously consuming all forms of music, reading, sharpening her tarot card skills, and crafting custom cocktails from random ingredients in her pantry.

Quotes • “I had ‘Big T' trauma, so that very much set me up for a lifetime of perfectionism, a lifetime of not really understanding that I am worthy of love simply because I exist.” (04:00-04:10) • “My burnout story was: ‘just keep going, it will change.'” (07:26-07:32)  • “That happens to people who are chronic people pleasers, who are prone to burnout….It's very easy for you to set aside what you like because you're more concerned about what needs to happen now, and it's like, but what you like is what needs to happen now!” (10:49-11:05) • “[Functional medicine] is kind of like if biomedicine and Eastern medicine had a baby.” (15:14-15:17) • “When we're in burnout, it's very difficult to see anything other  than what we're focusing on, which is usually panic, stress and anxiety. And the benefit when I started reading my own tarot cards again was...oh, this card popped up and it means this. How does that relate to my current situation? In 2012, the quiet small town of Evansdale, Iowa became the site of a gut-wrenching double homicide. In July of that year, cousins Elizabeth Collins (8) and Lyric Cook-Morrisey (10) were out for a summer bike ride but didn't return home. 5 months later their bodies were found more than 20 miles away from where they were last seen. Now, almost 10 years later, someone has yet to pay for this horrendous crime. Someone somewhere has the answer - but maybe they just don't know it, yet.Anyone with information is asked to call the Evansdale Police Department at 319-232-6682 or the Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers at 855-300-8477.

You asked - we listened. This week, Drewby and Yergy venture back to the state of Indiana to discuss the mystery surrounding the deaths of sisters Kionnie, Kerriele, Keyara and Keyana, also known as "The Flora Four" who died in a house fire that some speculate wasn't an accident. We also touch on the phenomena of "Missing White Woman Syndrome" and how it may apply to the Flora Fire case. We review the tragic deaths of cousins Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins, and the striking similarities between their case and the case of Abby Williams and Liberty German. Finally, we close this episode with an update Brian Chadwell. Police are offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest. Citizens can donate to the reward fund by sending a check to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security at 302 W. Washington Street Room E208, Indianapolis, IN, 46204. To ensure the donation goes to the appropriate account, the memo line should read “Flora Fire Reward.” A very special thank you to Levi for supporting our show as our highest tier patron! Friday the13th of July 2012 was just another typical hot, sunny day in the small community of Evansdale Iowa – and 9 yr old Elizabeth Collins and her 10 yr old cousin Lyric Cook – were doing what any other normal kiddos their age would be doing. They were riding their bikes, and enjoying their summer break off school. But – when hours passed by without seeing the little girls – frantic family members would realize, somethings not right here. Sadly, despite a massive search and huge efforts by law enforcement and the community – months would go by with no leads – and the girls would never be seen alive, again. Now, good bye, is that true? ‘Fleghigow dor...’ / ‘Little children of the land (1970) This curious piece of Cornish was handed to Mick Paynter as a sound file by one of his students Alban Roinard. It is a recording of the grandfather of one Gavin Cheshire from Australia. His grandfather John William Pearce made the recording on a domestic tape recorder in about 1970, when he himself was in his 70s. It was a recording of a grace in a language he did not know or understand but which he had learnt parrot fashion from his grandmother. It was used as a grace at table throughout his life. The family at first thought it was Welsh, until speakers ruled it out. The family then discovered that Grandfather Pearce’s paternal grandparents (William Drew Pearce [b.1846] and Elizabeth Collins [b.1846]) had left St Austell for Rochampton, Australia, in 1875. William Drew Pearce worked as a miner who was indentured to the Peak Downs Copper mining company in Central Queensland. The final line (in French) was what he said when saying hello or goodbye to his grandmother. John William Pearce also remembered his grandmother using the terms ‘Eswthaki’ (meaning something like good night) and ‘Bethisto’(meaning something like shut up. Listen HEREJust want to say I was never trying to hide my identity! I am proud of who I am. I just thought my nickname was unusual and unique and would draw attention, and there are so many Elizabeth Collins out there. I am NOT the Elizabeth Collins that writes/wrote articles for PETA!!!Anyway, my friends from New York have been calling me Knuckles for as long as I can remember, it is my nickname, but everyone knows my real name because that is how it is shown on Gary Francione's site for example - it was never about hiding my name. But if I ever deal with someone who is looking for a reason to judge or make snap decisions, using my nickname may work against me, and well, you never know. So there you go. You can still call me Knuckles if you like! I don't care either way. But officially, podcast-wise, I'm dropping the moniker. And I put a photo (another great suggestion from Doug) - it was taken by me on my camera phone in NYC in very early November 2007, only a couple of weeks after I saw Earthlings and went vegan. I had just that minute returned from being away at a wedding that I had promised to go to, and it was a great wedding of two of my closest friends and was beautiful, but in order to attend I had to leave my baby to go to Vegas for three days. This photo was taken minutes after we were reunited, and you can see the relief in her little face. I came back! Can you imagine what it is like for them when we leave them like that? I hope to never have to do it to her again. Thanks to Doug Hines.http://www.eatraworganicsunshine.com/why_no_meat_.html

Episode 45 Earthlings Hello and welcome to another fine episode of Jay Wont dart's podcast. This episode, I'll talk a tiny bit about Earthlings. I have two fairly long pieces of audio that will make up the majority of this episode. My intro is an old Australian news story of an animal who tried to escape from a zoo.Earthlings is a very important movie to me, I think it says almost all that needs to be said on the side of veganism. Earthlings shows basically all the ways animals are used in todays society. It has graphic footage, from well known animal welfare groups such as PETA, and is narrated by Joaquin Phoenix, who is vegan. Instrumental music throughout the movie is performed by well known vegan musician Moby. This is a few minutes of audio from Earthlings.I first saw Earthlings because Elizabeth Collins, of NZ Vegan podcast told me to. I was lent the movie by an Invercargill SAFE member, who hadnt watched Earthlings because they had heard how graphic it is. Its true, Earthlings has a lot of violent imagery, but I think its our duty as human beings to see what we have done, and continue to do to the world. To talk a little bit about Earthlings, here is Elizabeth, in a clip she recorded literally MONTHS ago for me :)I'd like to thank Elizabeth for taking the time to add to this episode. Its taken me long enough to make this episode, but its finally done! You can find Elizabeth on iTunes by searching "NZ vegan", or at nzveganpodcast.blogspot.com as well as NZ Vegan Podcast on Twitter.Thank you for listening. My outro is a Seinfeld clip. You can find the script for this episode, as well as downloads for every episode of Jay Wont darts podcast at jaywontdart.blogspot.comIf you want to contact me, even just to say you listened, send an email to jaywontdart@gmail.com, j a y w o n t d a r t @ gmail.com, I'd appreciate it.Have a super happy day, bye.
