“Your most limiting factor is yourself.” - Tessa Nge In this week's episode of the Scaling UP! H2O Podcast, we're thrilled to bring you an empowering conversation between host Trace Blackmore and two leaders in the water treatment industry— Tammy Faber, Sales Director, and Tessa Nge, Service Quality Supervisor at HOH Water Technology. Together, they explore how diversity fuels success, the importance of overcoming Imposter Syndrome, and how you can take meaningful steps to give back to our industry. Diversity Drives Success: The Data Speaks Diversity isn't just about creating fair workplaces—it's a proven driver of business success. Tammy shared powerful insights from a study titled “Diversity Drives Sales Success: The Link Between Successful Sales Teams And Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion,” commissioned by LinkedIn. This data shows that teams with strong diversity practices see: 6% higher customer satisfaction 12% higher sales 28% higher conversion rates 3% higher sales forecasts "Diversity drives sales," Tammy stated. It's clear that fostering diverse teams doesn't just boost morale—it boosts the bottom line. Diverse teams approach challenges from different angles, offering innovative solutions that serve a wider range of customers. When organizations embrace diversity, they unlock untapped potential for growth. Overcoming Imposter Syndrome: A Battle We All Face Imposter Syndrome is a challenge many of us encounter, no matter our level of expertise. Tessa opened up about this, emphasizing "Imposter Syndrome is something everyone struggles with. Overcoming it is hard and takes intentional practice." It's not about eliminating self-doubt overnight but about taking deliberate steps to recognize and overcome it. Tessa and Tammy's top tips for overcoming self-doubt: Acknowledge your accomplishments. Take time to celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. This can shift your mindset and reinforce your value. Step out of your comfort zone. Growth comes from challenging yourself. As Tessa mentioned, "You won't grow unless you're willing to be uncomfortable." Seek feedback. Tammy also highlighted the importance of feedback, saying, "I always start by asking if it's a good time to provide feedback. This shows respect and creates a space for open dialogue." "Your most limiting factor is yourself," Tessa wisely added. By recognizing that our self-doubt often holds us back, we can take intentional steps toward building confidence. Building a Culture of Support Creating a culture of support is vital for both personal and professional growth. Tammy and Tessa also discussed the vital role of a positive workplace culture in fostering growth and confidence. According to Tammy, "Intentionality is key to defining your culture. It should flow through every aspect of your organization." She emphasized that a strong culture empowers employees to thrive and feel supported. Tessa echoed this sentiment, noting that a culture of trust and accountability allows individuals to flourish. "When you remove micromanagement and create a supportive environment, employees can focus on their growth," she said. By promoting mentorship, offering training opportunities, and encouraging open dialogue about the challenges we encounter, we can cultivate a healthy work culture that benefits everyone. Taking Action: Give Back to the Water Treatment Community This week, we challenge you to give back to the industry that's given so much to you. Whether it's mentoring a young professional, volunteering with a local organization, or visiting a school to inspire students about careers in STEAM, now is the time to make an impact. As Tammy passionately said, "We need people that love this industry, that have a heart to help others and to grow others. There is no amount of expertise needed. The only thing you need is a willing heart and time." By giving back, you not only help others but also strengthen the community that has supported your own journey. Final Thoughts: Know Your Worth We wrapped up this inspiring conversation with a powerful reminder from Tammy: "Know your worth. Take time to identify your limiting beliefs and pull them out by the roots. You are unique, and your talents are valuable." Overcoming Imposter Syndrome and stepping into your full potential requires recognizing your own value. No matter where you are in your career, these lessons—embracing diversity, overcoming self-doubt, and fostering a culture of support—are essential for growth. Join the Conversation Listen to this eye-opening conversation in our latest episode with the player above, or visit ScalingUpH2O.com/392 to tune in. The challenge is…explain alkalinity to a non-technical person. Now, if you're like me, this is a fun challenge! I LOVE explaining industrial water treatment to people! If you're not like me, then sorry, but please do this challenge anyway. Alkalinity is a foundational bit of knowledge we must all understand as industrial water treaters. Technically, it is defined as the acid absorbing or neutralizing property of water. Sounds simple enough, right? What are the chemical components that make up alkalinity, though? We usually think of carbonate, bicarbonate, and hydroxide ions, but can there be others? Why does alkalinity matter in cooling systems, boilers, closed loops, and wastewater? The answer can be different for each. How do we measure alkalinity? We talk about P-alkalinity, M-alkalinity, and OH or hydroxyl alkalinity, but how are each different, how are they related, and what is each measuring? Total alkalinity and M-alkalinity are the same thing. That can be confusing to some. Why are they the same? How would you explain this to a non-technical person? Can you explain it right now or do you need to do a little more research first? Albert Einstein once said, “If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough.” This is your challenge to understand alkalinity well enough to explain it simply.  Events for Water Professionals Check out our Scaling UP! In this Concrete Logic Podcast episode, Seth and Robert Higgins discuss the importance of curing concrete properly and the impact it has on the durability and sustainability of concrete. They highlight the historical practices of curing and how they have not evolved to keep up with changes in concrete composition. They also discuss the effects of temperature on curing and the role of alkalinity in concrete. The conversation emphasizes the need for improved curing practices to ensure the longevity and performance of concrete structures. Takeaways Proper curing practices are essential for the durability and sustainability of concrete. Historical curing practices have not evolved to keep up with changes in concrete composition. Temperature plays a significant role in the effectiveness of curing, with higher temperatures leading to faster curing but potentially weaker and more permeable concrete. Alkalinity in concrete, caused by changes in cement production and the use of additives, can affect the curing process and lead to weaker and more porous concrete. Improved curing practices can significantly increase the durability and sustainability of concrete structures. We are going to talk about hydrogen bonding, one of my favorite types of bonding in the atomic world. Yeah, I'm weird that way.    Water is H2O or two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. The two hydrogen atoms are not stuck to each other but are stuck to the oxygen atom instead. It's HOW they are stuck to the oxygen atom that makes all the difference in the universe! They are NOT stuck directly across from each other on the oxygen atom at 180 degrees like the buns on Princess Leia's hair. No buddy. That would have been disastrous for life as we know it!  We would have had no hope.    Instead, they are stuck at an angle; at approximately a 104.5 degree angle. Think Mickey Mouse with his two ears representing the two hydrogen atoms and his head the oxygen atom. THAT is water. This kink of an angle leads to a very important superpower. Because the hydrogen atoms are small and only have 1 measly electron, they're easy to push around and take their electrons. The much bigger oxygen atom only needs 2 more electrons to fill its outer shell and be in a state of nirvana, and it gets these from the two hydrogen atoms. Because the water molecule looks like Mickey Mouse with the hydrogen atoms more on one side of the molecule than the other, you end up with a partial positive charge on the more hydrogen side and a partial negative charge on the more oxygen side.  We've all heard that opposites attract, and that's true in the world of chemistry as well. The partially positive side of one water molecule is attracted to the partially negative side of another water molecule, making water “sticky.” This, my friends, is called hydrogen bonding. It doesn't just end with water molecules sticking to each other, though. Water molecules will also be attracted to other positively and negatively charged ions, too. For example, this explains why table salt or NaCl dissolves so easily in water. The positive sodium ions are attracted to the partially negative oxygen side of the water molecule while the negative chloride ions are attracted to the partially positive hydrogen side.  Hydrogen bonding leads to all kinds of unique properties of water. Water is a liquid at room temperature. That may sound like a “duh” comment, but when one considers that other molecules of similar or heavier weights are gasses at room temperature, such as methane, propane, and butane, it suddenly seems a little more amazing.    Water has a high heat capacity, meaning it takes more heat to raise the temperature of water and especially to make it change phases from solid to liquid to gas. We use this property every day in industrial water applications with boilers, cooling towers, etc., and it's all thanks to hydrogen bonding.  There are more examples, but it should suffice to say that hydrogen bonding is one of water's primary super powers that influences our industrial water lives in so many ways every second of every minute of every day.    2024 Events for Water Professionals Check out our Scaling UP! Frank and Jacque talk about water balance water chemistry. Why is LSI Langlier Saturation Index important in your pool and how do you manage it. poolwerx.com ipssa.com 00:00-04:50 must be halloween found a bat in a skimmer, plaster finisher didn't use stainless steel set screws when reinstalling the pool light fixture 04:51 facebook question asking if they should be concerned about pH being high in their pool. answer is a little high or a little low is ok as long as LSI is in a good range. Then people asked what is LSI. 05:40 anyone managing a swimming pool should understand LSI, Langlier Saturation index. LSI is water balance. Water seeks a saturation equilibrium. There. are a few things that determine what that equilibrium is. water temperature, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, total dissolved solids, and to a degree cya, borates, and a few other factors. All of these go into a formula that allows you to calculate if the water is aggressive, meaning it wants to dissolve anything it can to become saturated which can etch pool surfaces or weaken and damage equipment, or scaling, which is the water has too much stuff dissolved in it and it wants to push the dissolved materials out of solution, or precipitate, which can cause scaling or staining. 06:45 water chemistry, both balance and sanitizers are just part of pool maintenance. chemistry alone will not keep your pool water looking good and safe. you still need good filtration, circulation, removal of debris, and brushing. 17:45 to achieve proper chemistry you must properly test your water, and do not dose a chemical without testing it first. and measure doses, do not guess amounts. it is recommended that most chemicals, acid, shocks, etc.. be diluted in a bucket of water when adding it to the pool. Always add chemical to water not water to chemicals. keep records for test results, chemicals added, filter pressure, and water condition. There are apps available that can make calculating LSI easy. We like the Orenda app. Water temperature changes the water balance. as temperatures increase the LSI increases, and as they decrease the LSI decreases. so the average pool LSI will change quite a bit during the year just do to water temperature. typically scale will first develop in areas where the water temperature is a little warmer. Calcium, on most pools, will naturally increase over time. the only way to decrease calcium in water is to remove or dilute the water, use reverse osmosis, or push it out of solution by violating the lsi and turn it into scale in the pool. total dissolved solids is everything that has been dissolved into the water cya and borates affect LSI through their affect on alkalinity test results Alkalinity is the total of carbonates, bicarbonates, hydroxides and a few other things to a lesser degree. It is called the buffering capacity of water. It resists the effect of acids and bases on the LSI. Too low or too high alkalinity make it difficult to control pH. Alkalinity should be tested weekly and managed pretty closely. ph has the biggest impact on LSI, and it typically is the parameter in LSI that changes the most. pH can change hourly in a pool. It is extremely important that you test pH regularly and adjust as needed.

Frank and Jacque discuss an issue with extremely high alkalinity and how to fix it. The ends and outs and myth busting beliefs about alkalinity. Credit to Ipssa "Basic Training Manual" and "Intermediate Training Manual" by the late, great Robert Lowery poolwerx.com ipssa.com 00:00 Intro. what's up with Frank and Jacque 05:40 Fellow Poolwerx franchisee, Poolwerx Haslet, is dealing with extremely high alkalinity and asked Frank's opinion about best way to lower it. Alkalinity is the buffering capacity of water. It is the amount of carbonates, bicarbonates, hydroxides and a few other things. It is very important in calculating LSI in a swimming pool. Some things will affect your alkalinity test results. CYA will falsely read as alkalinity. You should subtract 1/3 of your cya reading from your alkalinity test results. If you use borates you can subtract 1 (one) ppm of alkalinity for every 10 ppm of borates in the water. Source water can be extremely high in alkalinity and create issues trying to keep water balanced. 11:45 to lower alkalinity you use acid. Muriatic or suphuric acid, or dry acid which is sodium bisulfate. acids lower alkalinity and ph. no matter how you add the acid it lowers both. there are myths about you can affect how acid lowers either pH or alkalinity by how you add the acid. But these are wrong. Acids will always lower pH and alkalinity at the same rate regardless of how you add them to the water. because of the effect on pH you have to be careful and strategic when dosing acid to the water to lower alkalinity. You can easily violate the LSI and damage your pool surfaces and equipment. chemical products that raise ph (sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate) also raise alkalinity. this means we have to find a way to lower alkalinity and then adjust our pH back up with out raising alkalinity again The way to raise your pH without raising alkalinity is aeration. You can aerate your water by disturbing the surface of the pool waterfalls, aiming return jets at the surface, inject air into the bottom of the pool, features that spray water across the surface are all ways to aerate the pool and increase pH. the recommended way to adjust extremely high alkalinity to manageable levels is do several small doses of acid over time 10 to 20 ppm per dose, and aerate the water to prevent lowering pH to levels that damage your pool and equipment. test before each dose and make sure you are not violating the LSI. do not rush the process.
