On this important episode of the Pool Magazine Podcast, host Joe Trusty sits down with Dr. Adam Katchmarchi, a leading national expert on drowning prevention and water safety. As National Pool Safety Month kicks off, this conversation couldn't be more timely or more vital. Drowning remains the leading cause of accidental death among children ages one to four — and many of these tragedies are entirely preventable.Dr. Katchmarchi, now with the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance and formerly Executive Director of the National Drowning Prevention Alliance, walks listeners through the most common — and often overlooked — drowning scenarios. He also shares staggering statistics about those who are most at risk.Throughout the episode, Dr. Katchmarchi emphasizes the importance of using a layered approach to pool safety — something illustrated clearly in Pool Magazine's new Pyramid of Pool Safety infographic. The pyramid outlines four critical layers: safety devices like alarms and drain covers, physical barriers such as fences and covers, swim lessons starting as early as age one, and most importantly, active adult supervision. But as we discuss, supervision alone isn't enough — and often fails, especially in busy backyard gatherings where everyone assumes “someone else is watching.”In addition to discussing the pyramid, Dr. Katchmarchi shares real-world advice for pool owners, parents, and even Airbnb hosts who rent out their backyard pools. From creating safety rule signage to displaying the property address near the pool area, and having a dedicated landline for 911 access, he offers actionable steps that can make a real difference in an emergency. The episode also explores how new technology — including AI-driven pool cameras and smart alarms — is beginning to change the landscape of water safety. Whether you're a parent, grandparent, pool owner, or pool professional, this is one of the most important conversations about swimming pool safety you'll hear all season. Send us a Text Message.Ensuring Pool Safety: Beyond Swimming Lessons - A Deep Dive into Andrea's Monologue on the Talking Pools PodcastIn the latest episode of the Talking Pools Podcast, Andrea delivers a compelling monologue emphasizing the critical importance of water safety. However, her focus extends beyond the typical advice of learning to swim, diving deep into the often-overlooked aspects of pool and pool equipment safety. Here, we unpack Andrea's detailed discussion on the barriers of protection, the Virginia Graham Baker Act, the concept of the 'Sober Swimmer,' and the myriad of other safety devices that can prevent accidents and save lives. The Four Barriers of ProtectionAndrea begins her monologue by outlining the four fundamental barriers of protection every pool owner should implement:Door Alarms: These are essential for any home with direct access to a pool. Door alarms alert homeowners when a door leading to the pool is opened, providing an immediate warning that someone may be entering the pool area unsupervised. Andrea emphasizes the importance of ensuring these alarms are loud enough to be heard throughout the house and are always in working order.Pool Fencing: A sturdy, four-sided fence around the pool acts as a physical barrier, preventing unauthorized access. Andrea highlights that the fence should be at least four feet high, with self-closing and self-latching gates that open outward, away from the pool. This setup makes it more difficult for small children to enter the pool area without supervision.Safety Covers: Pool safety covers are a robust solution to keep the pool inaccessible when not in use. These covers can support the weight of a child or even an adult, preventing accidental drownings. Andrea advises choosing covers that meet the ASTM International standards for safety, ensuring they provide the highest level of protection.Pool Alarms: These devices are designed to alert homeowners when something or someone enters the water unexpectedly. There are various types of pool alarms, including surface wave sensors and sub-surface disturbance sensors. Andrea stresses the importance of regular maintenance and testing of these alarms to ensure they function correctly when needed most.Swimming Lessons: While swimming lessons are crucial, Andrea argues they should be part of a broader safety strategy rather than the sole focus. Teaching children and adults how to swim can significantly reduce the risk of drowning, but it's equally important to combine this knowledge with other safety measures. The Virginia Graham Baker ActAndrea dives into the Virginia Graham Baker Act, a pivotal piece of legislation aimed at enhancing pool safety. Named after a young girl who tragically drowned due to a faulty drain cover, this act mandates specific safety standards for pool and spa drains to prevent entrapment.Andrea explains that the act requires:All public pools and spas to have anti-entrapment drain covers.Pools with a single main drain must have an additional device or system designed to prevent entrapment, such as a safety vacuum release system (SVRS), suction-limiting vent system, gravity drainage system, or automatic pump shut-off system. On this week's episode of Keeping Kids Safe, Karen and Megan speak with Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz—U.S. representative for Florida's 23rd Congressional District. Wasserman Schultz authored the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act in 2007 and since its passage, there have been zero drain entrapment deaths in U.S. public pools. Despite the legislation's remarkable success, accidental drowning remains the most common cause of death for children between ages one and four-years-old—so additional, meaningful work is still necessary. Rep. Wasserman Schultz documents her tireless efforts to improve pool safety across the country via federal legislation and public education. Throughout the discussion, Megan, Karen, and Debbie emphasize the importance of creating a national dialogue to promote meaningful transformations that benefit children and their families. Future developments may include the introduction of drowning prevention education in public schools—similar to existing programs like stop, drop & roll, recycling, and helmet safety.

National Parks Restoration (0:00:00) Our beautiful national parks are visited by thousands of people every year. With all the people and the natural wear and tear of time, these places are in need of some restoration. The Pew Charitable Trusts is working on this project and are seeking long-term solutions. We love national parks here at The Lisa Show, so we wanted to learn a little bit more about these efforts. To do that, we invited Marcia Argust, the Project Director of Pew's efforts to restore America's national parks, onto the show today to discuss this. Fulfilling Your Life's Mission (0:15:14) Those who have experienced mental illness know how debilitating it can feel and despondent life can seem. Despite the many resources to help, finding purpose and meaning in your life, while passing through those moments, can be extremely difficult and sometimes seemingly impossible. For those who have not experienced mental illness, understanding those with it can also be a great challenge. Well today, we are very excited to hear from Drew Young, the author of The Meaning of Your Mission, which tells his story of overcoming the opposition that accompanies mental illness to find his purpose in life. The Language of Being Human (0:33:18) If we started doing our show in another language, I'm guessing some of you might not be completely on board with that. If I started speaking French, Spanish, or Russian, you just might have a hard time enjoying the show as usual. The good news is we don't want to do that and make you feel left out. When we want to make a connection with someone, we use the language they know, but does that mean we can never connect with someone that doesn't speak English? To help us learn about the universal languages humans' share is Poet Ali. He's an expert in communication, author, and poet. Pool Safety (0:52:47) I don't know about you, but now that it's summer I've been dying to go swimming. Some public pools and water parks are planning to reopen or have already opened their gates. But I think many of us are still hesitant to go. So, is it safe to go to these places, and if not, where can we enjoy a good swim during these hot summer months? Here to tell us what swimming will look like this summer and how we can stay safe is Nikki Fleming from Pool Safely. Mini Book Club: Socially Conscious Books (1:07:03) Rachel Wadham, of BYU Radio's Worlds Awaiting, talks with Lisa and Richie about the best books to read to get informed about current social issues. Coronavirus Scams (1:20:13) As the coronavirus pandemic continues, scammers are using confusion as an opportunity to steal money and personal information. Since the beginning of the year, the FTC has received more than 7,800 coronavirus-related reports from consumers, double what they were about a week ago.Knowing how to protect ourselves from being scammed will help relieve us from unnecessary stress during these uncertain times. Here to tell us what we should keep alook out for is Kathy Stokes. Kathy is the director of Fraud Prevention Programs at AARP. Communicating with Your Stylist (1:26:50) Occasionally –women especially can relate to this –we go to our hair stylist to change up our look when we're going through a transitional phase, a crisis, or when we're bored with our hair. Sometimes, the change we're looking for can be risky and difficult to explain. But communication is key to any successful relationship, and that includes our relationship with our hairstylist. So how do we explain the perfect look we imagine in our heads? To help us out, we've invited friend of the show and instructor for L'oreal Professionnel Michelle Lindsay to tell us how we can better communicate with our stylist what we want in order to avoid a haircut fiasco and feel confident in our new look.
