In this episode, I have a very special guest joining me - my grandfather, Barry Whitehead. We'll be sharing our personal story of how we found each other through an Ancestry DNA test in September last year. Prior to this test, neither of us knew that the other existed. This is a deeply personal episode for me, as my father Aaron unfortunately passed away by suicide when I was just three years old. Before his death, he often spoke about his biggest grievance in life - not knowing who his real father was. This caused him a lot of pain and heartache, leaving him feeling rejected. As I've grown older, I've also wanted to know more about my grandfather, but there seemed to be no way to find out. The curiosity got the better of me, which led me to take an Ancestry DNA test, hoping to learn more about my ethnicity and heritage. To my surprise, I matched with Barry as a 93% match for a grandparent. On the other side of this, Barry lived his whole 68 years prior unaware that he had fathered a child when he was 17 and studying in Ballarat briefly back in 1973. His initial reaction was one of shock and horror, as he took a moment to process what this meant and the reality that he had a son who was no longer alive that he never knew.In this incredibly special episode, my grandfather and I will be sharing our reactions, how we felt, and how we shared this information with our loved ones. We'll also be discussing the incredible connections and relationships that have since transpired. Our story is truly one in a million, and we're excited to share it with you all. Trish passed away at just 58 years old and had been brushed off many times when trying to seek a diagnosis over the years of not feeling well. This adds another layer of complexity to Tara's experience of grief, as she not only had to cope with the sudden loss of her mother, but also the fact that her mother's illness may have been preventable or could have been caught earlier.Tara speaks about navigating grief while adjusting to being a parent for the first time, and how she has been aching for her mother's support and guidance in those early days, something that never really goes away. She candidly shares what it has been like to raise three girls under three with little to no support, and how the death of her mother has affected different family dynamics both positively and negatively.Tara explains how the loss of her mother, one of the hardest things one can go through, has given her an inner confidence to know she can get through anything. She also talks about how much her mother wanted to be a nanny and how amazing she would have been at it. In this episode of the podcast, we interview Jessica Sculley, a mother who shares her family's journey with her daughter Sadie's diagnosis. Jessica talks about the first signs of an issue when Sadie was just 3 months old, as she was an extremely colicky and unsettled baby, which led them to visit their GP. The pediatrician suggested that it could be colic, but he had concerns about Sadie's head control, tone, and eye movements. The situation escalated when Sadie was 5 months old, and an MRI revealed bleeding on her brain, which opened up a child services case. The child services case was ultimately closed because the MRI results were misread, and it turned out that there was no bleeding on Sadie's brain. The family was left with a lot to deal with, but as time passed, Sadie was diagnosed with several conditions, including nystagmus, affected eyesight, low muscle tone (hypotonia), global developmental delay, epilepsy, and a genetic condition called GNB1 syndrome. At 2.5 years old, Sadie received a formal autism diagnosis, which added another layer to her complex medical needs. Through it all, Jessica has been a strong advocate for her daughter, navigating the healthcare system, and supporting her family's needs. Listen to this episode to hear Jessica's perspective on being a parent of a child with complex medical needs, the challenges she faced, and how she's learned to advocate for her daughter.FOLLOW JESSICA: INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/atsadiespace/https://www.instagram.com/_jessica.sculley/WEBSITE: https://atsadiespace.com.au/Support the showYou can follow and connect with me here:INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/the.innerviewpodcast/FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=the%20innerviewThank you for listening if you enjoyed the episode i would love it if you could leave a rating and review! Meet Erin, A non-diet dietitian from Melbourne. She is a wealth of knowledge and information, In this chat, she shares tips and inspiration to move away from weight loss and towards intuitive eating. She shares her philosophy about ditching diets to explore intuitive eating and a non-diet approach and how liberating, joyful and exciting it can be. We circle back to Erin's childhood and discuss her relationship with her body and food over the years and how that is impacted by the messages society sends us as young women and diet culture. It's so normal and common to be scared of gaining weight. We live in a society that idolises thinness, celebrates weight loss and dismisses people with larger bodies. There's also the idea that weight gain instantly equals poor health. While there's an *association* between higher body weight and specific health conditions, it's not a causation. There's a big difference. Often our fear of weight gain lies in our beliefs about larger bodies. From a young age, diet culture teaches us to see thin as good and fat as bad. Whether it's a family member commenting on our bodies, public health campaigns or messaging from our favourite Disney movies, they tell us the same story, it's terrible to gain weight or be in a larger body. You will hear the passion in Erin's voice and her deep desire to help other women and men achieve a healthy balance and relationship with food and their bodies - Just the way they are! 4 years ago Lee decided it was time to dedicate that year to address her health. At the time she was suffering from terrible plantar fasciitis in both feet and knew her family history of bowel cancer and gastric issues, she also was unhappy with her weight. Once she took this step it was discovered that she had ahuge Hiatus Hernia that had pulled 2/3 of her stomach from its lining. An operation was needed to fix the hernia and assess the damage to her oesophagus.3 hrs of surgery later, the hernia was back in her stomach, the oesophagus was repaired and ended up with a roux en y bypass as a result of the damage. Lee's life was about to change drastically and in her words, she got a second take, a second chance at life. If these issues went untreated there was a chance of death. So much has changed in her life in the last 4 years from the diet, food intake methods, food limitations, a renewed enthusiasm for exercise, 45kilos weight loss and a WHOLE LOT of learning to love herself, be present with her family and get in the family photos!Lee wants to inspire fellow women and mothers to permit themselves to put themselves and their needs first. Did you know there are around 100 surrogacy births in Australia every year? Although Kat offered in February 2021, it takes time to get through the process to be a surrogate.Surrogacy is NOT illegal in Australia. What is illegal is to advertise for a surrogate and for a surrogate to be compensated in any way financially. It is also recommended the surrogate has finished growing her family first. This week we are speaking with Shannon & Kat, this is an incredible story of friendship and hope. Shannon was born with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome (MRKH) and chances are you have never heard of it. It's when a female is born without a uterus or cervix and possibly without one kidney. It's not life-threatening but it's definitely life-changing. She wasn't properly diagnosed until about 27 years of age, after multiple appointments and surgeries Shannon was at the end of the line with surrogacy as her only option. When sharing this news with her lifelong best friend, Shannon was not expecting Kat to offer to be her surrogate (especially at 6 weeks postpartum with her 2nd child). After having her own struggles conceiving and experiencing a devasting miscarriage a few years ago, Kat's perspective was completely shifted. Kat speaks about her motivation and inspiration for offering the ultimate gift ( carrying and birthing Shannon & Scott's baby boy) and also some of the interesting and sometimes offensive comments they have both received throughout this experience. Finally, I speak with the ladies about their decision to document their journey on their Instagram page "Two Friends & A Snowflake" and what inspired them to share. Kat is currently 33 weeks pregnant with this little miracle boy and they are truly on the home stretch, Shannon & Scott are SO close to meeting their son. I know so many will leave this episode feeling inspired, more educated on this topic and blown away by these women and this incredible story. Around 500 strokes will be experienced by infants and children in Australia each year. While the numbers are small, the impact can be devastating and life-long for families. At 33 weeks pregnant Dee fell to her knees in an appointment, with a sharp pain down one side of her body, she would later find out this was her unborn baby experiencing a stroke in utero, this would go undiagnosed for months after Emma was born, After seeing 3 different GPs voicing her concerns that Emma was unable to use the right side of her body, she would finally get a diagnosis for her almost 1-year-old. While Dee should have been enjoying getting to know her precious little bub like other first-time mums, she was dealing with a barrage of doctors, test results and life-changing news. She felt anxious, overwhelmed and isolated. While navigating through Emma's diagnosis, Dee has co-founded "Little Stroke Warriors". Since the group launched, it has grown from a small support network into a government advocacy organisation. Little Stroke Warriors received $4 million from the Federal Government for the Australian Paediatric Acute Code Stroke project, and the group has produced the Our Family Stroke Journey booklet. Their end goal is to make sure parents don't leave the hospital scratching their heads in confusion and turning to Dr Google in desperation for answers like they did. While Dee does not want praise and admiration for doing what, in her opinion, every parent would do in this situation, I can't help but be inspired and in awe of her love for her daughter Emma and her passion and dedication to advocate for those living with a disability. Access, Inclusion, Visibility and basic human rights are what she is striving for and I know you will leave this episode with a new perspective on this topic. Belinda Robbie is a Case Manager who has supported women & children at The Salvation Army Ballarat for the past 12yrs. At just 17 years of age, Belinda found herself homeless and expecting her first child with the support of services like the Salvation Army she was able to get back on her feet and find a home. Inspired by her own experience in this system and wanting to give back, Belinda went on to study and is now supporting women & families who were just like her all those years ago. The Salvation Army Homelessness Ballarat offers a range of services & programs assisting families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. This is something that could happen to anyone, it only takes one or two significant life events that can turn everything upside down. An illness, losing employment, losing your license, relationship breakdown, family violence and the list goes on! In this episode, we chat about some of the common judgements and misconceptions when it comes to homelessness, why it's so important to advocate for these families and why you should never judge someone who has found themselves in this terrifying situation. Homelessness is far more than “rootlessness”. Homelessness means being without a safe, sustainable and private place to live. In Ballarat, over 60% of persons seeking housing assistance from specialist homelessness services did not get safe and secure housing in 2020-21. As this episode goes live it is National Homelessness Week, every day this week here in Ballarat you can join “Walking for Homeless” around Lake Wendouree. Complex PTSD is the result of experiencing multiple traumas throughout your life, it is considered chronic and manageable but does not have a cure. Since speaking with Amelia about her journey i have to say this has been one of my most eye opening interviews to date, hearing her story and the way she has been able to overcome so many awful and terrible things has had a real impact on me and i know it will for you too! For as long as Amelia can remember she has experienced some form of bullying and exclusion. Starting in Primary School and subsequently following her into High School and then the workplace where employers would use fear based tactics and flat out poor treatment to motivate their staff to work harder and keep their jobs. In this episode Amelia walks us through this journey and gives the listeners an insight into what its like to live with Complex PTSD and the treatment and management she has found most beneficial. We chat about the symptoms of this condition and how this affects her in relationships, the workplace and her own self worth. Make no mistake, Amelia is not a victim nor does she live in that headspace or mentality. She believes it is up to her to do 'the work' in order to create a beautiful and meaningful life and she wants to inspire others who have been in her position that they too can have that freedom. She is truly an incredibly inspiring person who has now created such an amazing life with her husband Lou and is working in a job that she feels safe and valued. There is so much that we can all take away from this episode but above all else its so important to BE KIND and treat each other with respect. Thank you Amelia for sharing your story with us.
