If you think dentists have it rough when it comes to PPOs “owning” your practice from a financial standpoint…and if you question who you are working for sometimes (PPOs?), then this episode of the Jerry Jones Direct Radio Show is for you!The reality is this: Independent physicians are 95% insurance-driven. He who controls the purse strings owns the process. And, in the PPO-Dentist relationship, that most often is going to be the PPO. Your leverage is minimal and worse, your patients believe the PPOs have their best interest in mind. Unfortunately, they do not. By definition, they are in business to make a profit and so profit becomes their primary motivation. Let's not kid each other. You are not their primary interest. YOUR patient is not their primary interest. They are their primary interest. To grab a different and sobering perspective about shedding the shackles of PPOs, I recently corralled my personal physician, Matt Bain, MD, of Albany, Oregon, to discuss the benefits of an in-office membership program – one that does NOT consider PPOs, HMOs, Medicare or Medicaid. If you've considered or have added an in-office membership type program to your practice (I created one of the first ones over 15 years ago for my own dental office – knowing that uninsured patients would flock to it and they did), or you're curious how it works, are maybe even tepid about it or scared to death what it might do to your practice, this podcast will be a major help in overcoming the internal objections, the process, the pathway, and much more.Matt and I spend over an hour diving in – he reveals his concerns about in-house programs, his decision making process (INVALUBLE) used to integrate the program in a medical practice (which scares the living daylights out of most physicians due to the unknowns and uncertainty), how he determined the cost of the program (HINT: You have to know your cost/procedure in your practice and 99.9% of dentists do NOT know the cost to deliver a given procedure in their practice, and that is something you MUST be armed with before integrating such a program) and much more. This episode will give you a new and far superior way to evaluate the pros and cons for your unique practice to help you determine if this is a model you should consider. From my perspective, it's a no-brainer and for 15 years, we had patients that loved it. Odds are, you will too. If you are interested in learning more about integrating a program like this in our practice, reach out to me – you can contact me through my website: https://jerryjonesdirect.com or, just call my office for fastest service and ask for me: 503-339-6000.Support the show

Hey it's Jerry Jones here... You know I was just as just having lunch with my daughter Madison she's a real estate broker here in Salem and a very successful and even though she's a very very new she's a rookie and in my opinion she's actually chicken but anyway we're having lunch together and I was telling her about the challenge I've had this morning with a couple of doctor offices I was following up with both of which plan to be you know this this idea of a high touch office you know fee-for-service we're all about a great experience and all that happy horseshit there's a problem nobody answered the phone today not one person answer the phone at the two offices I called in again these are supposedly you know cut cutting and state of the art high touch fee-for-service practices that clearly they are all about the patient experience yet nobody answers the damn telephone that is the kind of incongruency that keeps solo practice Dentists from thriving is making those decisions like that example ... I called a practice today to get in touch with this doctor because he had actually reached out to me and so I called back to get in touch earlier this week earlier this week is phones did even work there was dead silence when I dial the phone numbers and I had to get her phone numbers both of them dead silence so this is a spot this is a practice that holds itself out as a high touchy experience right do you see the and yet nobody answer the following Wednesday when I called and then today I get a phone tree the phones are working apparently but when I call I get press one if you're new patient press two if you're a current patient press three for filling her it's whatever that means I'm asking people like me that are calling to actually help the doctor Who has reached out to me to begin with so it's in congruent with the experience that you claim to be delivering if you drop the ball and treating patients like second-class citizens or third classes since by not being real and reachable so I guess it is big lesson is in this very short podcast simply is this if you're going to hold yourself out as a high touch first class experience amazing dental practice where are you the patient are just going to be wild and be so happy and pleased with your expressive you're gonna said every friend and family member you have that you're going to flip off and give the bird to PPOs and even if your insurance does change your still gonna come back because were so amazing if that's your practice take a look at every single message you're sending weather whether it's a subtle message or an overt message and make damn sure that it's congruent with what you're saying you're all about because that's one thing like that they can absolutely do you rail a potential patient relationship that's worth potentially five 10 15 $20,000 I mean if you're one of these high-end cars my practices that is delivering a phenomenal experience and you lose patient a referral no less I'll because you didn't answer the phone on a Friday or your phones were busted or you have some goofy phone tree and you can get to a real live person who treats you like you know like you are the bread-and-butter of their business like you're important than you really need to reassess your walk to the front door of your dental practice you have no clue actually none at all what in the world your patient experience is like rigs and every single touch point of your pace experience and make sure really represents what you think it should and does represent another words go back and examine have a fantastic day catch you later I love you Jerry Jones Direct I guess I'll wait one more thing before... And perhaps most important, Ken knows precisely what he wants and he knew to get it, he'd need a hand. And in doing so, he got out of his own way and let it take shape with a team he trusted. You can learn more about Ken here, at his website: https://www.drkenmurphy.com/, which incidentally, is a by-product of JJD's Digital Division (info @ https://jerryjonesdirect.com/digital). DSOs – Dental Support Organizations. Some love ‘em. Some hate ‘em. Some just don't know what they think. No matter what your thoughts, without DSOs in dentistry, where would all the dental grads go to get real world jobs? Over 6,000 dental grads this year alone. 51% of them women. Simple, rather obvious questions for you Where are they supposed to work? How are they supposed to open a practice with a half-million in debt? From experience, I can tell you, most solo practices are NOT set up to absorb a single new dentist.  Why? Too many struggle to support the dentist that owns them now! (If that's you at the moment – you're not alone and there is a way to solve your challenge – don't despair. Reach out for help!) In a recorded conversation with my friend Steve Parker, the owner of The Profitable Dentist, we discussed this and a few other topics in The State of Dentistry® 2019, at length. Both Steve and I are pro solo practice/independent dentist.  But, I'm also not an anti-DSO kind of guy, either. I believe there are market forces at work that are far stronger than anything you or I can sway. So, you have a choice: Embrace the changes (Look, most of the changes in dentistry are incredibly positive!) or fight tooth and nail to maintain your status quo. (I'm not a fan of lack of progress or “regressiveness” in most areas, but I AM cautionary of ALL progress – doesn't mean it's good, right?) Catch my podcast with Steve, here.
