If your days feel jam-packed but your dental practice still isn't improving, the problem usually isn't effort. It's urgency. The loudest problems in a practice always win, and they trick us into believing we'll work on systems, leadership, and growth “once things slow down.” They don't slow down, and that's exactly why so many practice owners feel stuck, overworked, and quietly frustrated. We unpack the real difference between reactive work and proactive work in dental practice management. Reactive work is the constant stream of fires: insurance denials, upset patients, schedule chaos, staffing surprises, and equipment problems. It keeps the lights on, but it doesn't build the future. Proactive work is what creates a practice that runs without you: onboarding systems, checklists, phone scripts, KPI scoreboards, P&L review, and leader development that prevents issues before they explode. We also talk about why this matters for your key leaders, especially the office manager. Many office managers spend their whole day reacting like a highly skilled admin employee, when what you really need is protected time for true management. I share the shift I had to make when I hit a breaking point, and how blocking and defending CEO time became the turning point for building momentum again. If you're ready to stop living in reaction mode and start building a calmer, more profitable practice, listen now, share this with a colleague, and subscribe so you don't miss what comes next. Hello voices from the bench community, John Wilson here and I wanted to share some news about the evolution of the Programill lineup. Most importantly, Ivoclar's new PrograMill 7. What stands out right away is the reduced air consumption this mill requires, but what you'll notice first is that impressive new touchscreen. For us, the biggest advantage has been increased spindle power. Next time you see your Ivoclar representative, be sure to ask about the PrograMill 7 and tell them John Wilson sent you. Thank you. At exocad Insights in beautiful Mallorca, we finally caught up with Felix from Imagine USA—and the timing couldn't have been better. As an exocad dealer on the front lines of digital dentistry, Felix shared his excitement about the strong turnout, the familiar faces, and most importantly, the innovation coming from exocad. What stood out most? The new exocad Hub and its cloud-based capabilities, along with powerful AI-driven tools inside DentalDB designed for efficient batch processing. For Felix and the Imagine team, it's not just about seeing what's new—it's about putting it to the test. By running new features through their own production facility first, they ensure real-world performance before bringing solutions to their customers. Fresh off the beaches and lectures of the beautiful island of Mallorca at the exocad Insights 2026 , Elvis and Barb sat down with three incredible women proving that digital dentistry is global, creative, and fueled by passion. First up is Andreea Bordea, a ceramist and lab owner originally from Romania who found her way into dental technology after narrowly missing acceptance into dental school. From analog waxing and staining zirconia with a single A2 shade to opening her own lab in Spain and building a digital workflow around exocad, Andreea shares the journey of learning everything the hard way. She talks about teaching herself digital dentistry, building a team, and how social media unexpectedly became her outlet while working alone in her lab. The conversation also dives into Ivoclar materials, zirconia, and the excitement around new products launched at Insights. Then the microphones turn to Denisse Ramos from for one of the most energetic conversations of the event. Denisse talks about her journey from Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Coca-Cola into the dental industry, eventually becoming a major force in digital workflows, 3D printing, and equipment sales. From Dentsply to Desktop Health and now leading sales at New Stetic USA, Denisse shares stories about mentorship, industry evolution, women in dentistry, and why labs need to charge for their expertise. We all talk about the rise of digital dentistry, treatment planning frustrations, social media, the future of dentures, and the importance of giving back through organizations like Ladies of the Mill and the NADL. Finally, Elvis met Daniela Torres, better known online as “Danny Designer,” a digital designer from Chile whose Instagram portfolio turned into a thriving business. Daniela explains how she taught herself exocad through YouTube before traveling to Madrid for advanced training, eventually working at the MOD Institute in South Carolina before returning to Chile to build her own remote design business. From designing full arch restorations and dentures to handling dozens of cases a day entirely through email and WhatsApp, Daniela proves how powerful digital dentistry and social media have become for technicians worldwide. The conversation wraps with excitement around exocad's newest updates, the exocad Hub, and what it means to be recognized as an exocad Hero.Special Guests: Andreea Bordea, Daniela Torres, and Denisse Lasso Ramos.

If you've ever looked around your dental office and thought, “Why am I the only one who cares?”, you're not alone and you're not crazy. We've felt that same disconnect between the emotional weight of practice ownership and a team that seems able to clock out and leave it all behind. That gap can turn into resentment fast, and it's one of the quiet drivers of dentist burnout, poor practice culture, and constant frustration with accountability. We dig into a hard truth in dental practice management: your team will never care the same way you do, because they don't carry the same risk, debt, payroll pressure, and reputation stakes. But “they don't care like an owner” doesn't mean they can't care deeply. The real issue is often the environment we create, especially when every decision funnels through us or through a single fixer on the team. That pattern trains dependence, kills autonomy, and leaves the owner carrying every problem, even on weekends. From there we get practical about dental leadership. We talk about building connection outside of corrective conversations, making small relational deposits that help people feel seen, and creating psychological safety so reasonable mistakes become learning instead of fear. We also share why teams support what they help build, plus a simple framework to invite staff into solutions so they truly own results without needing equity. If you want more engagement, better communication, and a lighter emotional load as an owner, this gives you a clear starting point. If you need help building an engaged team and a healthier dental office culture, reach out for a strategy call, and if this helps you, subscribe, share the episode with another practice owner, and leave a five-star review so more dentists can find it.Join our Newest and Best Coaching Program, Click Here for More InformationTake Control of Your Practice and Your LifeWe help dentists take more time off while making more money through systematization, team empowerment, and creating leadership teams.Ready to build a practice that works for you? Think about that for a moment. Here is a training program specifically designed to help dentists and their teams understand laws that directly impact their profitability, patient communications, and insurance interactions, and some offices choose to end the conversation before learning what is being offered. And of course, doing it all in Mallorca doesn't hurt either. "LIVE" again at the 2026 DLAT meeting, two very different conversations came together around one common theme: the future of dental technology is still being shaped by passionate people willing to learn, teach, and adapt. First, the podcast catches up with returning guest Tiffany Prater from Destination Orthodontic Lab, who shares how her lab journey has evolved from running a large commercial space with employees to building a smaller, more personal business focused on private practices and hands-on craftsmanship. Alongside her is Sydney Ribera, a young technician discovering orthodontics through mentorship, creativity, and a fascination with bending wire and pouring colorful acrylic retainers. The conversation dives into the realities of learning ortho in today's digital world, the importance of organizations like the Orthodontic Resource Group, and why mentorship still matters more than ever in a profession where most of the training happens shoulder-to-shoulder. Then the crew sits down with Marlin Gohn from Argen to talk about everything from next-generation zirconia to massive dental labs in China and the surprisingly common mistakes labs make when choosing disc sizes for milling. Marlin breaks down Argen's new gradient translucency zirconia, explains why nesting strategy matters more than most labs realize, and shares real-world troubleshooting tips that can save labs time, money, and remakes. The conversation also wanders through SLM frameworks, milled gold crowns, PFMs, translating lectures in China, and why some old-school techniques still outperform the newest trends. How to Talk About Dollars and Numbers and Not Sound Greedy

You're alone in your office after hours, staring at the numbers, and you can feel it: the practice has more potential. The hard part isn't the math. The hard part is saying “production goals” out loud without feeling like you've betrayed patient care or turned into a salesperson. We've been trained to talk dentistry, not revenue, so it makes sense that money talk can feel awkward, corporate, or even greedy. We walk through a simple but powerful reframe for dental practice management: if you don't define what production, growth, and profit mean, your dental team will define it for you, and it often turns into pressure, discomfort, and underpresented treatment. That discomfort leaks into case acceptance, financial conversations, and patient trust. Then we use three questions to anchor the conversation in ethics and confidence: do patients need what we recommend, do we do good clinical work, and do we take great care of people through the full experience? When those are true, presenting treatment becomes clarity, not manipulation. From there, dental office metrics stop being “just numbers” and start representing value provided: pain relieved, teeth saved, disease treated, confidence restored. We also make the case that healthy dental practice profitability can improve patient care by funding better technology, training, team retention, and a calmer practice culture that isn't desperate for every yes. If you want a stronger, more aligned team and sustainable dental practice growth, this is the mindset shift that makes the leadership conversations easier. Subscribe to Dental Practice Heroes, share this with a practice owner who hates talking about money, and leave a review so more dentists can find it. And of course, doing it all in Mallorca doesn't hurt either. This week at the Dental Laboratory Association of Texas Meeting 2026, the microphones stayed hot as three completely different conversations all circled around the same thing: how fast the dental lab industry is evolving. First up, the crew sat down with Tony Aliatim from Axis Dental Milling to talk about going from biomedical engineering and printing silicone heart models for surgeons… to becoming one of the go-to names in dental milling. From industrial machining roots in Michigan to AI-powered calibration systems and Straumann plug-and-play workflows, Tony breaks down how VersaMill machines are helping labs mill everything from zirconia to implant abutments faster, smarter, and safer. Along the way, the conversation dives into HyperDent, trade show madness, wet vs dry milling nightmares, and why dental technicians may not realize how close this industry really is to aerospace-level manufacturing. Then things shifted from mills to maintenance with Rebekah Serrago and Chris Wilson from Garland Dental Services. What started decades ago as a garage-based repair business fixing handpieces has grown into one of the industry's best-kept secrets for equipment sales, service, and support. Rebekah shares the story of growing up folding flyers for her father's repair company before eventually becoming CEO and expanding Garland into a massive online sales and service operation supporting everything from ovens to mills. Chris joins in to talk preventative maintenance, service certifications, keeping ancient ovens alive, and why labs desperately need dealers that actually understand the equipment they sell. It's equal parts family-business story, repair shop wisdom, and hilarious behind-the-scenes dental lab banter. Finally, the future officially arrived when the podcast crew sat down with Antoine Coppens from Relu and orthodontic lab owner Christian Saurman of New England Orthodontic Laboratory. What started as four engineering students experimenting with AI in Belgium somehow turned into fully automated dental workflows capable of designing surgical guides, night guards, models, and restorations in minutes. The conversation explores how AI is reshaping lab workflows, reducing manual design time, integrating directly into LMS systems, and even learning individual lab preferences. Christian explains how his custom-built orthodontic lab management system helped eliminate workflow chaos and automate huge portions of production, while Antoine gives a fascinating look into where dental AI is headed next. Between AI-generated appliances, automated scan checks, and self-learning workflows, this episode feels less like science fiction and more like a preview of what labs will look like over the next five years.Special Guests: Antoine Coppens, Chris Wilson, Christian Saurman, Rebekah Serrago, and Tony Aliatim.

Your team probably isn't “full of problems.” More often, your standards are invisible. When we expect people to “act like adults” but never define what that means in a dental office, we get frustration, gossip, and the same performance issues on repeat. I'm Dr. Paul Etchison, and I'm sharing one of the most effective leadership exercises I've used to create immediate clarity and shift our dental practice culture fast.We start with a simple idea: culture is like a garden. If all you do is pull weeds like negativity, laziness, rudeness, and defensiveness, you'll stay stuck reacting forever. Instead, we intentionally plant the traits we want like reliability, accountability, helpfulness, positivity, and fun. I break down exactly how we ran this as a team exercise using live input, how we grouped the answers, and why the “everyone agrees” moment is where momentum starts. Once expectations are spoken, the drama fades because feedback becomes principle-based, not personal. Then we dig into the culture divider that changes everything: accountable versus defensive. I explain how defensiveness turns simple coaching into exhausting debates, why that drains leaders, and how a shared language makes it easier to call behaviors out without shaming anyone. If you care about dental practice management, team accountability, and building a practice that runs without you as the bottleneck, this is a practical, repeatable way to get there.Subscribe for more dental leadership strategies, share this with a practice owner who needs it, and leave a review so more teams can find it.  The fastest way to lose a patient's trust isn't a clinical mistake, it's a rushed vibe. We've all had a “nearly perfect” experience where the ending spoiled it, and that same psychology shows up every day in dentistry. Patients don't have a spreadsheet in their head measuring cost per minute. They're measuring whether they felt heard, safe, and cared for, and they'll decide your value based on that feeling. We walk through how to move fast clinically without making your dentistry feel cheap. Efficiency is a gift when it's intentional, built through systems, repetition, team calibration, technology, and smart block scheduling. But speed paired with frantic energy can trigger doubt: Did they really take their time? Did they miss something? The fix is simple and powerful: slow down at the beginning, stay focused and efficient in the middle, then slow down again at the end and let the patient decide when the visit is over. You'll get a practical chairside framework for premium patient experience, including what to say before you lean them back, how to avoid distracting side conversations during treatment, and a clear closing flow that boosts case acceptance, referrals, reviews, and patient loyalty. We also flag the areas where looking fast will always hurt you, especially exams and cleanings, because patients need to feel thoroughness there. If this helps you, subscribe so you don't miss what's next, share it with a dentist friend who runs behind, and leave a quick review so more practice owners can find the show.Don't be a silly goose....Download the Dental Practice Heroes App today and access all the free resources available to you. As a dentist and owner, you need to better understand what your front office team members deal with each day.Sometimes patients take a few weeks to give updated insurance information, or you're waiting on primary insurance to pay before submitting to secondary. In many cases, that process can easily stretch past three months. So that shorter window wasn't just inconvenient — it was setting offices up to lose legitimate reimbursements.Support the show

We sat down with Dr. Alan Mead of the Very Dental Podcast to unpack the sticker shock of modern dental education, the real math behind associate versus owner income, and how to build skills that actually move your take-home. No five-step frameworks, just honest stories, practical tactics, and plenty of laughs to keep it human. We start with the big question: is dentistry still worth it when new grads face $4–5k monthly payments? From there, we break down the critical early decisions—whether to chase ownership for upside or remain an associate and become indispensable. You'll hear why leadership and communication pay as well as implants and endo, how to structure CE so it pays you back, and what case selection looks like when you need wins fast. We also talk about DSOs: why they can accelerate skill development and production, and how to spot the burnout traps before they grind your spark into dust.Skill building is a theme throughout: stacking meaningful repetitions, documenting questions in real time, and cornering instructors until ambiguity dies. We share the value of curation—picking a clear clinical lane, aligning your systems and team, and letting focus become your competitive edge. Along the way, we swap dental school war stories, joke about dentists opening doomed restaurants, and remind ourselves that humor is a survival skill when the numbers get heavy.Whether you're a new dentist staring down a $500k note or a seasoned clinician wondering if ownership still makes sense, you'll leave with a clearer playbook: pick a lane, get the reps, invest in communication, and let the value drive the income.
