Dental practice owners across the country face a mounting challenge—skyrocketing hygienist wages that strain traditional production-focused models. But what if obsessing over hourly production metrics is actually holding your practice back from its true potential? In this transformative episode, I reveal why the real value of your hygiene department extends far beyond cleaning teeth and covering overhead. Your hygienists aren't just maintenance workers—they're relationship architects creating memorable patient experiences, treatment acceptance facilitators preparing patients for necessary care, and health consultants offering solutions that improve lives. When patients spend 40-60 minutes with your hygienists but only 2-5 minutes with you as the doctor, those hygiene appointments become the defining experience of your practice. Patients form their strongest impressions and build their trusting relationships during hygiene visits. The loyalty this creates drives retention and word-of-mouth referrals that no marketing campaign can match.Text us your feedback! Dental practice owners across the country are facing a critical challenge: how to continue growing when hygienists seem impossible to find. This shortage creates a frustrating bottleneck - you've got the new patients flowing in, your clinical skills are sharp, your systems are solid, but without adequate hygiene capacity, your practice hits a growth ceiling that feels impenetrable. The mathematics behind this problem are straightforward but concerning. A full-time hygienist seeing seven patients daily for four days weekly can accommodate 672 patients on a six-month recall schedule. For practices bringing in 80-100 new patients monthly with strong reappointment rates, a single hygienist reaches capacity within just eight months. This reality forces practice owners to make difficult decisions about resource allocation.Beyond simply raising compensation to attract scarce hygiene talent (though that may be necessary), savvy practice owners are deploying creative solutions: becoming more selective about recalls and building robust ASAP lists; extending recall intervals beyond the traditional six months for appropriate patients; restructuring patient flow to route new patients directly through doctor exams with same-day dentistry opportunities; and implementing assisted hygiene models to increase capacity. Each approach has merits and challenges, but combining these strategies can help practices continue growing despite staffing limitations.Remember that transparency with patients about industry-wide staffing challenges helps manage expectations, and consider that new patients often represent a population with greater immediate treatment needs than established patients who already receive regular care. By implementing these five practical solutions, you can continue growing your practice, serving your community effectively, and maintaining the profitability that supports your ideal lifestyle.Ready to implement systems that create freedom and profitability in your practice? Your body language might be sabotaging your case acceptance without you even realizing it. Imagine presenting the perfect treatment plan with flawless explanation—only to have patients hesitate and "think about it." What went wrong? The answer lies in the subtle realm of nonverbal communication. Research shows our brains are 12.5 times more likely to believe body language over words, and a staggering 82% of first impressions depend entirely on nonverbal cues. These hidden signals determine whether patients perceive you as trustworthy and competent—or not.Drawing from Vanessa Van Edwards' groundbreaking book "Cues," this episode breaks down five powerful techniques to transform your patient interactions. You'll discover the critical link between open hand gestures and trust, learn the "shoulder-to-earlobe rule" for projecting confidence, master the perfect balance of eye contact, practice the engagement-signaling "lower lid flex," and understand the charisma-building "first liker advantage."Try incorporating just one new cue per day into your patient interactions and watch as engagement improves. These subtle shifts in body language could be the missing piece in your case acceptance puzzle, helping more patients say "yes" to the treatment they truly need.Text us your feedback! With the beginning of a new year, I decided to Google what the top three concerns were for dentists in their practices. What resulted was interesting. The top three to five concerns tended to center around the business entity answering the questions on Google, and it's worth reporting. The top concerns and solutions vary with who is being asked: consultants vs. software companies vs. the ADA all seemed to have different answers. Having said that, I believe I've narrowed down the concerns with one simple answer to all of them, and that answer is “procedural profitability.” Here we go.Support the show

Ted Osterer returns to the show to discuss recent bankruptcies and sales in our industry. Large companies are experiencing shifts and they have teams of advisors. How can a smaller dental business learn from these mistakes and strategize for their own success? Ted shares how understanding key financial metrics like EBITDA, cost of goods, and margins has become essential in the dental industry. Businesses have to use data instead of intuition. What about offices that haven't had that kind of training? Now is the time. Now more than ever, business owners must adopt a mindset of financial clarity to make smarter decisions. Key Takeaways: The impact of DSOs on dental business practices is a double-edged sword, with positive financial insights but also challenges in maintaining company culture. The recent wave of mergers and acquisitions in the dental industry, like Patterson going private and BIOLASE's bankruptcy, will likely reshape the sector. Education and customer success initiatives can be powerful but require long-term commitment for real results. To navigate current pain points, dental offices are encouraged to adapt, whether it's adjusting payment policies, working more hours, or improving treatment presentations. There's optimism for a consumer confidence rebound in 2025, with a rise in entrepreneurial tactics and a slow but steady industry recovery.
