In this encore episode of The Creative Genius Podcast, with a brand new intro - I revisit a powerful conversation with the wise and insightful Jane Dunnewold. In a time of uncertainty and upheaval, I'm reflecting on the emotional rollercoaster so many of us are experiencing—fear, despair, hope, and the flickering light of creativity. I am candidly shares my own struggle with doom scrolling, the paralysis it caused, and the steps I am taking to reclaim my inner peace.Jane's wisdom offers a timely and profound exploration of the inner bullies that live within us—those relentless voices of self-doubt, fear, and unworthiness that hold us back. I connect this concept to the larger external forces at play in the world today, recognizing that until we learn to defeat the bullies in our own minds, we will struggle to stand up to the ones outside of us.This episode is an invitation to step into deeper self-awareness, to recognize the power of creativity as a means of resistance, and to become part of the essential ‘islands of sanity' in a chaotic world. This meditation focuses on embracing self-compassion and understanding your inner critics using the Internal Family Systems (IFS) approach. The meditation guides you to find a comfortable position and close your eyes or rest your gaze softly. You are encouraged to take deep breaths and relax your body. Then, you are invited to enter a peaceful, safe space within your mind and recall a recent moment when your inner critic was loud. You acknowledge the presence of your inner critic and get curious about its intentions. You engage in a compassionate dialogue with your inner critic, reassuring it and exploring a gentler way to achieve its goals. Finally, you reflect on the interaction and offer gratitude to the parts that softened back. The meditation concludes by grounding yourself in the present moment and reminding yourself that you can return to this safe space anytime. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ifsinsightsmeditations/support

In this episode, I dive into the concept of Parts work, which involves understanding the different inner voices we have that can either support or criticize us. I talk about how these inner critics may have developed from past experiences of woundedness and how we can show compassion towards them. I also touch on the idea of inner parents, such as an inner critic or neglector, and how we can work towards loving and addressing these vulnerable parts of ourselves. Overall, the video explores the importance of self-compassion and understanding our inner dynamics to foster self-love and healing. Have questions? Humour is a VERY important sense. Without it, we risk taking ourselves so seriously that we lose all perspective. Our sense of humour is a core part of gentleness (firm back, soft front) because it allows us to move through the world with greater flexibility and openness. We all have this sense! But it takes practice to remain humourously sensitised to the world around, within, and between us. In this episode of The Gentle Rebel Podcast, I share a Haven Courtyard conversation I had towards the end of 2023 with Roxana Alexandru and Neil Hughes. We explored how we might use humour to befriend anxiety and the inner critic in helpful and healthy ways. Rox helps people figure out ways to play with and change their relationship with debilitating social anxiety. She shares her experiments through Instagram and TikTok. Neil wrote the book Walking on Custard & the Meaning of Life: A Guide for Anxious Humans. It contains an inspiring ongoing meta dialogue with his inner critic throughout. Check out Neil's website and watch his TEDx Talk (A new plan for anxious feelings: escape the custard!) I love how both Rox and Neil relate to the voice of their inner critics, which is why I thought it would be fun to have them both on the same call…and I was right; it was! In our conversation, they explained why they felt drawn to use humour to engage with their inner critic and what they've learned. We Discuss Humour, Anxiety, Inner Critics, and... How can we work on our relationship with the inner critic in light-hearted ways? When is it better to be amused than anxious? Experimental ideas to take control over the process so that the fear doesn't gain power over you. How Neil's goal was to reach a point where he no longer needed to think/talk about anxiety. We explore how engaging with inner work as a temporary process (perhaps even obsession) can lead you to a light on the other side. The link between custard and anxiety and how seeing it through this metaphor can help identify and reach more solid and desirable ground. Situations and environments where social anxiety increases (and how to prepare/recover to avoid feedback loops) The simple power of being interested (rather than worrying about being interesting) The derailing fear of being misunderstood. Why we can never be prepared enough for every potential eventuality and how Neil engages with that truth in creatively humorous ways How scripting can help give a set of mental tools to draw on and use during times when we most need it Creating deliberate awkward moments helps the brain lean into discomfort on our terms. Why are our post-situational inner narratives often worse than the situations themselves - and how do we choose more favourable (and evidenced) narratives to believe? The sound of our inner critic (is it a voice? A narrative? Or a flavour?) How to relate to impostor feelings (or impostor syndrome) in a helpful and humourous way The stories we tell ourselves about appearances and how judgements by those around us about those around us can become internalised How do we gauge and measure progress with anxiety and the inner critic? And how do we recognise ways we have grown and are growing? Over to You Did you relate to any of the areas we covered in this conversation? Is there something related to humour, anxiety, and the inner critic that you would like me to explore more in the future? Leave a comment below or send me a message.

Self-doubt, an unseen monster that can keep the best of us shackled in the prison of our minds, is something we all struggle with at some point in our lives. Join me, Stacey Lauren, as we welcome the brilliant Dr. Amelia Case to the conversation, to help us unravel this beast and discover strategies to liberate ourselves from its clutches. With personal insights from my own battle with imposter syndrome, and Dr. Case's expert understanding of the human brain, we'll expose self-doubt and discuss practical strategies to break free from it, stride confidently, and chase our dreams. Ever wondered why some people seem to let nothing hold them back? We'll be looking for answers, tackling fears, and gaining perspective from shared experiences. Using examples like public speaking and the fear of being seen as an impostor, we explore the origins of self-doubt, and how witnessing others who've triumphed over their fears can inspire us to do the same. We're challenging listeners to confront their self-doubt, seek out tangible evidence of their abilities, and find solace in communities that celebrate diversity of thought and experience. Finally, we journey to a world we all once knew, a world where self-doubt wasn't a hindrance, but a catalyst for growth and learning - the world of children. We'll explore how we can navigate our emotions, understand the rise and fall of self-doubt, and tune into a higher, divine part of ourselves to overcome it. Listen in as we discuss the enlightening power of quizzes, their ability to help us understand ourselves better, and how we can use them to break through the mental barriers holding us back. It acts as a filter of sorts and is needed to help you survive. It alerts you when you are running late, and tells you to get to work and stop slacking off. But, sometimes it can be too harsh for your wellbeing. When this happens, it's time to fight your inner critic. You need to take it down a notch or two. You don't want to silence that critic completely, but you do want to teach it some balance. After all, you can't be wrong 100% of the time. Why do you have this inner voice that can be overly critical? It is a protection mechanism to help guide you through your journey in life. Sometimes it shouts at you to let you know you are in danger. Other times, it can let you know what you should say or not say in social situations. This inner critic has also lived a lifetime of negativity. It sees you watching the news or listens in on conversations you have with others. This constant barrage of negativity has helped it build into the cynic that it currently is.Your inner critic also has your parents and childhood teachers on its side. After all, you spent your entire childhood listening to these authorities telling you what you are not allowed to do. The inner critic scooped up that information. And it was reinforced for years. It's time to temper that inner critic. It has gone on for too long with unchecked power. It won't be easy since it has had control of you all your life. But, you can take some steps to curb its impact.Start using positive affirmations. Do this consistently, preferably on a daily basis. But, you can get away with weekly if that's all the time you have. Be prepared for resistance from your inner critic. Your inner critic may not have been talked back to for years. It usually has the run of things so be aware of that.Start paying attention to the messages the inner critic is giving you. It may be worth it to jot them down on a piece of paper. Evaluate those messages frequently and decide if it is giving you the right advice. You will find that often it isn't. When you make this discovery, it's time for you to make some changes.

we think its time to tell our inner critics that they can go f*** themselves!! In this longer episode (our way of saying a quick sorry for not uploading last week
We're been very strategy heavy on the pod lately so I wanted to delve into mindset again and this week the topic is a biggie - the inner critic. DUN, DUN, DUN. We all have one but did you know there are many types of inner critic? And better yet, do you know that the more we label them, we can disassociate from them and eventually banish them (for the most part)? I enjoyed this conversation with one of my friends, Heather Ussery-Knight, who is a coach with an extensive background in counseling and psychology. Heather has Masters in Counseling Psychology, over 20 years in the field of counseling and psychology. She currently works as a coach focusing on Inner Parts Work. Because she is a MultiPod with a penchant for writing, creativity, Integral Theory, video gaming, Systema, crafts and other artistic endeavors, and learning, she uses all these interests towards her work. You can find out more about Heather's coaching work at Lizard Dreaming, her coaching practice. *** We talked through "inner parts" work and inner critics, which she developed in parallel to the development of Internal Family Systems Therapy. It really has come about as an understanding through other therapeutic practices as well. The notion that some of our parts as being non-humanoid is also a really creative approach to our inner "cast of characters." We sometimes have a "truculent teenager" part or other places where they take over our bodies energetically. There are many ways we can unburden our parts through the kinds of work that Heather provides in some very creative ways. We talked about parts that get us in trouble. For me, this is my "Peter Pan" part and for her she mentioned a "caveman" part that might come out when she hasn't been taking care of herself. She mentioned that most of our parts are "younglings" and they serve(d) a purpose in our lives. Awareness is the key part of this process. We talked about her journey through a Russian combat martial art called Systema and how that has helped her, and deepened her somatic wisdom. Systema helps her understand pain and the way stories increase our pain. Inner Critics have a function. As Heather explained, there are many ways they try to serve us, but they may be misguided. Expending energy can seem "dangerous" to our system, and inner critics are quite clever. I love her ways to engage with the critic and helping us work through this when it is holding us back. Embodying our full energy and surrendering to the process helps us get out of our own way. Heather is a gamer and she talked about ways we can engage in a somatically healthy way while gaming. We talked about how the psychology world and the gaming world have some very interesting intersections. We explore the synchronicity of the 100th monkey and Carl Jung's work on the collective unconscious. *** You can find out more about Heather's coaching work at Lizard Dreaming, her coaching practice. *** To get in contact or look into being a guest, please message me via LinkedIn. In this week's podcast episode, Joanna is talking about what it means to be a grown-up and how many people don't have access to the wisdom of their Authentic Self because it's buried in the fog of their Inner Critic. She discusses how just because we are grown-ups by age doesn't mean that we've grown up. Because being a grownup is about your level of awareness of your Inner Critics's core beliefs, her automatic thoughts, her fear responses, her addictions, and her demands for validation from other people, and it turns out that it doesn't especially correlate with age. Here are this week's reflection questions: Where am I most susceptible to shame and embarrassment? What parts of your life do you think about and a dreadful, sinking feeling washes over you? If you were giving advice to yourself, which parts of your life do you know that you need to change and avoid acting on right now? What are the goals that you want to evolve towards? We hope that sharing this conversation helps anyone who has chased top grades, Instagram followers, performance ratings and promotions at work, or other external metrics of success. Taking and sharing personality tests teaches us new things about ourselves and each other. We discover that we each have a strong inner tiger parent, and we discuss the paradox that seeking external validation actually ends up blocking deeper social connections. Hello So Deep Peeps! Welcome to That's So Deep. This is the podcast where we try to root out loneliness one conversation at a time. Today we are talking about What Your Inner Critic Sounds Like and How to Get it to Shut Up (Based on the work from Playing Big by Tara Mohr). Some deep things we cover:Inner Critics are like buttholes. We've all got one!Inner Critics are the Risk Aversion Department of your brain.Inner Critics are more concerned with safety than truth: They'll tell you anything to keep you safe from emotional risk. What does the Inner Critic sound like?Harsh, rude and mean.Binary: Black and white thinking. No gray area.Sexist Body CriticalA Broken RecordAn Outer Critic that you have internalized: a parent, a sibling, a coach etc.If your inner critic is getting hysterical, it may mean that you're on the edge of a breakthrough. Keep going!Take-aways:Now that we know what the Inner Critic sounds like, what are some ways we can get it to quiet down? Here are some tips from Tara Mohr's book Playing Big: Name and describe your critic: Take a minute to breathe and journal. Give your critic a name and identify their personality traits. What are their features? What kind of car do they drive? What does their voice sound like? How do they take their coffee in the morning?Take the “I” out of the inner critic and talk about them in the 3rd person: Instead of saying “I'm freaking out!” try “my inner critic is freaking out right now!” The inner critic is “a” voice but it is not “the” voice. Ways to Minimize the Inner Critic's voice:Physically walk out of the room when your critic starts talking.Locate the voice in your body and imagine it receding into space.Pantomime putting all the criticisms in a box and moving it out of the room.Imagine a volume dial in your mind and see yourself turn the volume down. We're all are our worst critics. We may have voices on the outside that tell us we aren't good enough, but they don't hold a candle to the voices on our inside. Welcome to this solo episode where I delve into our inner critics...the voices in our heads that tell us negative thoughts on repeat. In this episode we will learn that our critics were meant to protect us for a time, but that now they're tired and holding us back. Learn the story of the "Two Wolves." inside your mind. This is an ever evolving process, because our inner critics can be strong. Referenced in this episode: Dr. Ethan Cross's book: "Chatter" Amber Lilyestrom's podcast featuring Xavier Dagba titled "Making Peace With our Inner Critic." dated 3/23/21. " In Case you haven't noticed, you have a mental dialogue going on inside your head that never stops. It just keeps going and going."- The Untethered Soul by Michael A Singer In this weeks episode I talk about the seven most common inner critics and the messages that they send. Dr Jay Earley and Bonnie Weiss LCSW have narrowed down the inner critical voices into these seven types and if we can begin to pay attention to the messages of these negative dialogues we can begin to renew our thinking and heal from trauma and past hurts. Becoming aware of these critics allows us the ability to bring those things to prayer and ask for God's guidance and healing so that Satan doesn't multiply the message and guide us to strongholds and sin. So let's get busy paying attention so that we can break free!!!
"Sometimes we are our own worst critic" is a well-known phrase and, unfortunately, often true. In this first episode of the new year, Jamie and Guy discuss how our inner critics or "saboteurs" often get in the way of us reaching our goals. Saboteurs are "invisible agents of self-sabotage" and represent our brain's automatic beliefs and assumptions about how to handle life's challenges. Guy has Jamie take a "Saboteur Assessment" (or quiz) to identify her hardest-working saboteurs and then they discuss which ones they struggle with the most. This assessment is based on the theory of Positive Intelligence by Shirzad Chamine and his bestselling book on the subject. More information on Positive Intelligence and a link to the free Saboteur Assessment can be found here: https://www.positiveintelligence.com/Also in this episode, Jamie and Guy kick off the new year with a giveaway...listen to see what it is and how to enter (and check out @thedavenportpodcast on IG and FB)When you are done, please take a minute to subscribe and leave a review on iTunes!
