If you find yourself having to learn the same lesson of faith a thousand times, following Jesus closely and then wandering off aimlessly, believing and not believing, trusting and doubting...this is the episode for you. And you happen to be in good company - namely Jesus's first disciples! Today we look at the general ineptitude of the original apostles and how clearly their impressive fallibility reveals the unconditional love of God. The biblical passage referenced in this sermon is: Matthew 15:29-16:20 (NRSV) It was preached on May 17, 2020 at Canvas Presbyterian Church (Irvine, CA). Who truly belongs to the family of faith; how wide is the circle of God's people?  This was one of the most contested debates in the early church, and remains so 2,000 years later. In this All Saints Day episode, we take up the question of inclusion and why Canvas has published a formal statement of our full embrace of those of every race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability, socio-economic status who call on Christ as Lord. As I mention in the intro, Canvas is currently engaged in a Continual Learning series on the church and the LGBTQ+ community. After all of that it was difficult for Meg to say it wasn’t the right path but in the process she found what she was meant to do.   While at school Meg was in business clubs and realized she liked the business aspect of running a vet practice but didn’t visualize herself practicing the medicine, just running the business. Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Missio over Zoom video!"Missio" is Latin for mission. And what at one time began as a side project for singersongwriter Matthew Brue has now shifted into the main mission. Accompanied by producer and instrumentalist David Butler, MISSIO sports an alternative/electronic sound with beatdriven hip-hop undertones. Atmospheric and expressive, this electro-alternative act is keen on a spirit of experimentation.Based in Austin, Texas, MISSIO broke out in 2017 with their single “Middle Fingers” whichreached top 10 at U.S. Alternative Radio, later leading to an appearance on the late night’sCONAN amid the launch of their debut album Loner. That same album also spawned heavily rotated songs like “Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea,” “Everybody Gets High,” and “Twisted,” which all reached over 50 million streams each (and counting) on streaming platforms.MISSIO released their second album The Darker the Weather // The Better the Man in mid2019, broadening their sonic palette with songs like “I See You” which was the #1 song onthe Sirius XM Alt 18 for 9 total weeks. During this album campaign, their streaming audience tripled and they capped off their album cycle by releasing the single “Sing to Me” as part of the soundtrack to the global video game phenomenon Death Stranding alongside artists such as Chvrches, Major Lazer, Khalid, & Bring Me the Horizon. The band decided to document their creative process and personal growth during the recording process of this album, and ended up also releasing a documentary with accompanying soundtrack which they wrote and scored titled Love Me Whole.MISSIO has now accumulated close to one billion streams within three years and two albumreleases.Beginning the next stage in their music evolution, Matthew and David landed back in theirhome base of Austin, Texas this past November with their producer, co-writer, and creativepartner Dwight Baker, and over a feverish 21 day period wrote and recorded the entirety oftheir new album, Can You Feel The Sun (via 2B Recordings / BMG).The band started with a range of demos that eventually snowballed into being a complete and finished full-length album.“We worked until we felt like we were done and then one day woke up and knew we had afinished album”, says David. “Even from the very beginning of the process I already knewthat ‘Can You Feel the Sun’ was one of the best songs we’d ever written and knew that wehad something special.”MISSIO have toured the United States extensively as headliners, and through several largesupport slots for the likes of MUSE, 30 Seconds to Mars, Yungblud, and K. Flay. The duo have also performed at major festivals like Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Firefly, Hangout, Bottle Rock, and Voodoo Fest. As part of a wider European tour, they made their sold-out UK live debut at London’s Old Blue Last in May 2019. Their high energy live performances and custom-built light shows easily set them apart from their peers.MISSIO returned overseas in early March 2020, but the second half of their European tourwas cancelled as the band were pulled off their tour bus at 2AM whilst crossing the Czechborder, so that men in hazmat suits could check their temperatures to ensure that the touring party didn’t have COVID-19. They raced to get home on the final day before the U.S. borders were closed.Regardless of not being able to tour for the rest of the year, the band have decided to forge ahead with releasing their new music. They put out first single “Wolves” on June 24, which reached #1 on the Sirius XM Alt Nation ‘Top 18’ within three weeks. This is their 4th #1 single on the countdown to date.We want to hear from you! Kate Hawkesby: Will the 2020 US election result be a repeat of 2016?

So tomorrow I tell you what I won't be doing, I won't be flying to New York as my diary says. That's got a big cross scrawled across it.. our planned trip to the States to cover the US election is off.Not that it's not impossible to go, it's just who wants to quarantine for 2 weeks on the way home? When you have kids and responsibilities, a job and pets, you can't just add another 2 weeks onto your travel time on a whim.. every day counts. So New York is off, we'll have to watch the drama unfold from home.I vividly remember being there in 2016, at Hilary Clinton's HQ. Trump wouldn't let any foreign media in at his base, so we were camped with the rest of the world's media at the Democratic headquarters. Not that we cared about not being at Trump's HQ, because like everybody else, we still believed at that point that he wouldn't get in, and that Hilary was a sure bet.I had my Madam President badge on which they were handing out, I have a photo of myself standing at the press lectern in front of US flags where we thought Hilary would be standing after her inevitable win. Everybody was so certain. There was much discussion around how it wasn't even a contest.. many who were still referring to Trump's run as a joke. But as the votes came in, and the night wore on, and the new reality of a Trump Presidency began to dawn.. you could have heard a pin drop in that HQ. The horror that went across that room, and indeed across a lot of America that night, was something else to witness. By the time we left Hilary's rally, where we'd been waiting hours for her to appear to concede - it was about 2AM. Her aides kept saying she would be out to concede any moment, and to thank her thousands of supporters, but she never came, she wouldn't appear, she was too shell shocked. It was over. We watched as celebrity after celebrity, supporter after supporter, left the venue in tears, the shock was palpable. As they packed up the giant hall we walked back towards our Hotel along bleak dark streets looking for a cab. There was a lonesome 24 hour Dunkin Donuts open. I went in and asked for a donut. "We need alllllll of the donuts" the server said to me, offering up more than just one, "what just happened?" she said, shaking her head in disbelief. So fast forward four years and here we are again, on the cusp of another US election, and with another Democratic landslide predicted in the polls.. and with the Dems believing they have this one in the bag. Which is exactly the same vibe as 2016.So do they have it in the bag? Or are they more aware now of how easily these things can tip? Could we have a repeat of 2016 all over again? Or have the Democrats worked harder this time because they're not taking anything for granted? Despite many assuming his handling of Covid may see Trump off, I don't think anyone's ready to do any victory laps just yet.

Everything about their meeting is a violation of cultural expectations, and the scene is wrought with emotion. Continuing our look at the practice of being loved - the work we can do on our side of the relationship to receive what God has already given us - we look, again, to Jesus. But we do so not so much in an effort to follow or obey, but simply to (re)discover his heart: What drives Jesus? What motivates his action? If Jesus is God incarnate, what does his life reveal about the essential nature of the Lord? And how might insight into the depths of Jesus's love change us? That individual humans are dearly loved by God is central claim of Christianity. And yet many of us go through periods where we question even this foundational idea. Are we loved? Really? And even when we believe - intellectually - that we are, coming to deeply accept and experience that love remains quite a struggle. But there are ways we can aid in the process of receiving love, practices that can undertake. For the next few episodes we will look at those, staring with hearing God say it again. Jesus at 2AM - A Humorous, Intelligent Look at the Bible, Church History & the Life of Faith

Having established the content of Christian hope - the present assurance of God's ultimate salvation (see ep. 292) - we turn now to the Christian obligation to be instruments of hope to others. Amidst suffering, even suffering inflicted upon us, as followers of Jesus we are called to embody hope, to reveal the way to love and peace and rest. Our means for accomplishing this? In a word: holiness - being distinctly Christian, distinctly loving. Interview with the impressive Felicitas “Joji” Bautista Pantoja, Co-Founder and CEO of Coffee for Peace and 2020 winner of Oslo Business for Peace Award. An independent Award Committee of Nobel Laureates in Peace and Economics has selected the three outstanding leaders to receive the Award this year. Joji B. Pantoja provided sustainable livelihoods for indigenous and migrant groups in rural areas, enabling over 880 farmers to escape poverty and build their coffee production capacity. What is your own background briefly? I love food, I love art, and I love people. I am a graduate of Hotel and Restaurant Management by degree, but my passion for helping people to get to enjoy life, magnetized me to marry someone who wants to serve God and his people. When I was 9 years old, I had already considered myself being a missionary or a nun, to serve God. But being married to a man of God, exposed me more to the poor and marginalized people in the Philippines. My husband and I worked in the red light district of Luzon, where we meet with women sex workers after the night clubs they are working are closed. We listened to their stories. Through this we opened up a small eatery, called “Sisters of Mary Magdalene” Cafeteria. It was open from 2AM to 6AM just to serve hot soup while we listened to their stories and their pains. So I believe that I am called to do something for the world, even at a young age. Does it seem like a logical background to what you do now? Yes, I guess so. I believe in serendipity. I believe that everything that you experience in life as you journey is contributing to your purpose in life. The funny thing is that I am not a farmer. I am a city girl. But my love for people and my desire and passion to help them pushes me to learn things that are foreign to me. That is how I got into Coffee for Peace, Inc. as a business for profit, with a social mission of promoting the culture of peace. It was a big challenge to make people understand peace. in a context where hunger is present, no clean water, no permanent shelter, and no future to look forward to, because of constant conflict or war. In one of our field work, we decided to serve coffee because we ran out of strategies to make them stop fighting. This inspired me. Coffee is calling me and it floated as an idea to make coffee as an iconic product for peace! When there is coffee served, there is dialogue, and when there is dialogue, there is no time to kill each other, but just talking. Then, Coffee for Peace was bo How was the last 12 months? What were your big wins – well done on winning this award, how will / does it help you? The last 12 months presented a new set of challenges. We had the pandemic of COVID 19, personal distancing, hand -washing , lock down and travel permit. We closed our coffee shop. We asked assistance from the government to help us survive the economic repercussion of the pandemic. Farmers have produced that they cannot bring to the market due to lock-down. The normal link of socialization and commerce has been changed. How do we help the farmers? How do we bring goods to the consumers, how do we transport them. Our team saw the need of strengthening our eCommerce. We have our own website and a payment platform that are not well utilized. We do not have a clear marketing strategy. We lack finances. But our will to continue on is very strong. We have to change and be digitally literate. The farmers have to adapt also to this new normal. Because of lock-down, several women in our community re-discover their gifts and were able to experiment in starting their own on-line business. We have started looking on to have an FDA certification for our roasting and post harvest facility for coffee. We have to upgrade our system to be digitally ready. I believe that this award will give us exposure on what we do, in a small microcosm part of this world. This brings us honor to be recognized as Business for Peace, honoree. Wh...

How I Got Here It wasn’t all that long ago, that my son still had all of his symptoms of autism. He’d wake up screaming in pain in his stomach at 2AM, and I didn’t know why. He had emotional outbursts and tantrums. He’d have a hard time focusing in school and sensory issues and anxiety that made it hard to sit still. When people say things like, how can you want to change a child with autism? I ask them if they would want to live with those symptoms. Does that sound like a happy, and comfortable life? Could they even begin to share their positive contributions with the world when their anxiety and depression is so debilitating? Do they yearn for friends but don’t know how to make them or are treated like an outcast or even bullied? This is what I wanted to change, and fortunately, it did. Today, all of those symptoms my son once had are gone. He is no longer even diagnosable. He’s calm, easy going, just graduated from college, he’s happy, and healthy. He has a ton of great friends who love being with him, and he’s comfortable being with them. He’s a writer whose passionate about writing science fiction and fantasy novels, and possibly writing for gaming companies. This may have not been possible before I began my own research and went down the path to find the causes of his symptoms of autism so I could work with them directly, not mask them with dangerous drugs like the doctors and therapists advised me. Yes, that’s right, their answer was to drug him and try behavioral therapies and wished me good luck and told me we’d be managing his symptoms the rest of his life. They told me he could not recover. People today still believe autism recovery is not possible. When I hear that I say, “Oh yea, well, talk to my son.” CLick Here or Click the link below for more details. https://naturallyrecoveringautism.com/88

For many of us right now, especially, hope can feel in short supply. Not just the amount of hope, but the content of hope. What are we actually hoping for? And what has Jesus got to do with it? What constitutes "Christian" hope? That we won't suffer? That we won't grieve? Die? Clearly that is NOT what the gospel promises (see "crucifixion"!). Is hope, then, limited only to the age to come? I trust that God will win in the cosmic end? Is there true, meaningful hope for today? Short answer: yes. This remains a very difficult time, as crisis seems to mount upon crisis, pain upon pain, fear upon fear. And the question that confronts us is: How do we remain people of enduring hope, while honestly enduring suffering? When we don't seek false escape from pain, diminish it or deny it, but courageously face it, what gets us through? What genuine hope do we have? And how do we experience it? The short answer is: prayer. And prayer can be learned. In this episode we examine Ps. 118 as we learn how to pray deeply. The biblical passage referenced in this sermon is:  Psalm 118 (NRSV) It was preached on April 5, 2020 (Palm Sunday) at Canvas Presbyterian Church (Irvine, CA). What most of us want amidst suffering is for the pain to end - to be quickly delivered from our distress. And it is tempting to imagine that if God loves us, this must be what he desires as well - a quick and sudden end to our hardships. Perhaps that is the hope of faith, that if we are sufficiently obedient, God will prevent our suffering in the first place (or remove it quickly)? But the Bible makes no such promises. Indeed Jesus himself insists that we will face pain. So what then is our hope? And why? One of the hardest parts of enduring this crisis is coping with so much uncertainty: How long will it last? Who will be affected? What about the economy? Will there be a vaccine? Who should I trust for information...? The questions can be dizzying and tempt us in some moments to grasp at any hope offered, and at others, to nearly abandon hope. In this episode, we look at the biblical promises of hope - what God does (and does not) assure to his people - so as to ground ourselves in on the bedrock of truth and faith. It is in proper, nuanced hope that we find both comfort in our suffering and creative energy to bring transformation to our world. En cuanto a víctimas fatales por millón de habitantes, Costa Rica registra apenas una. En contraste, Estados Unidos tiene 211, Canadá 102, Ecuador 89, Panamá 47 y Perú 41. Harold McDonald has worked the streets of Mesa, AZ as a Mesa Police Officer for over 13 years and seen it all. Harold makes it all seem like just another day’s work but it takes a street savvy cop with common sense and a level head to be an effective patrol officer. Isn't the main point of Christianity to be a good person (and thereby to secure my place in heaven)? I mean, if one is basically moral, reasonably charitable and occasionally saintly, doesn't that please the Almighty? Is the point to please the Almighty? Come to think of it, what IS the point of Christianity? If one were to boil it all down, what's the message of the gospel? In this episode we take up these questions and arrive at a vision of faith that goes far beyond ethics. I know that as a Christian I am called to sanctification - to a life shaped ever more into the image of Jesus, in short, to a life of sinning less and loving more. And in some areas of my life, I see progress! But in other areas...not so much. Indeed in some facets of my life, I see almost no inner change at all, despite genuine effort. What gives? Do I just need to try harder? Really? (Frankly, much of me is ready to give up and just make peace with a besetting sin or three.) So what does actual sanctification look like??? How do I work with besetting sins? And is there an option for change beyond sloth (i.e., surrender) at one end of the spectrum and scrupulosity (never-ending guilt and anxiety) at the other??? Few words in the Christian vocabulary evoke more discomfort than "evangelism" - sharing the story of Jesus in hope that another will join the community of faith. In the 21st century, such efforts can feel relationally disrespectful and intellectually...crazy. Oughtn't we let everyone have their beliefs, not seek to influence them? And do we really expect people to believe in God? The Trinity? The resurrection? Yet one cannot be a follower of Jesus and not hear the call to "make disciples." What to do...??? Pop culture overflows with visions of "heaven" - from floating cities with streets of gold to childlike cherubim to the white robed "saved" joyfully playing the harp unto eternity... But these images have little to do with the actual biblical portrait of life in the age to come. In this episode we examine what scripture intends to communicate about New Creation, a world set right. And, even more importantly, how this vision of salvation calls us to life today. Of all the subjects we choose to avoid, death is probably first on the list! We fear it for ourselves, and perhaps even more, we fear the pain of the loss of those we love. But at the heart of the Christian life is a discussion about death and our hope in the face of it. In this episode we examine that hope and the courage it gives us to live generously. Specifically we'll look at the tragedy of death, our confidence in the resurrection, and what happens in the time in between... The biblical passages referenced in this sermon are:  Genesis 3:22-24 (NRSV) Ecclesiastes 3:18-22 (NRSV) Romans 6:3-5 (NRSV) 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 (NRSV) Want more content from Jesus at 2AM?? Name a hot topic - from abortion to refugee resettlement to gender identity - and someone in the church will declare "what the Bible says" about the matter. (And where there are 2 Christians there are usually 3 passionate, dissonant conclusions!) So how do we determine what scripture is trying to say? Or, to put it another way, how do we build a theology? How do we move from individual passages to a clear sense of God's intent? Here we'll take slavery as a case study and see what scripture is trying to say. The biblical passages referenced in this sermon are:  Exodus 6:5-6, 20:8-11(NRSV) Colossians 3:9-11, 22-4:1 (NRSV) Want more content from Jesus at 2AM?? Learn how to become a patron! Want to connect?
