Plain language is a communication style that aims to simplify complex information and make it more accessible to a wider audience. It involves using clear, concise, and jargon-free language to convey information in a way that is easily understood by the intended audience. The goal of plain language is to eliminate confusion, improve comprehension, and enhance communication between the sender and receiver. In this episode, I speak with Ahava Leibtag, an expert in plain language and digital content strategy. Ahava is a 2020 inductee into the Healthcare Internet Hall of Fame as an Innovative Individual and has 20+ years of experience in content development. She is the president and owner of Aha Media Group, LLC, a copywriting, content strategy and content marketing consultancy. She is also the author of The Digital Crown: Winning at Content on the Web. Today we're talking strategies for writing clear, understandable content for online education and digital platforms.  Key Takeaways Plain language focuses on questions like: Can people find what they're looking for? Can they understand it? Can they act on it? Break up content into small chunks with headings, bullet points, short paragraphs and plenty of white space. This makes digital content more scannable. Limit sentences to no more than 14 words. Long, complex sentences are harder for readers to process.  Plain language does not mean "dumbing down" - you can still communicate sophisticated ideas clearly. Writing should have cadence and rhythm, not just simplicity. Read content aloud to check flow.  Complexity does not equal authority. Clear communication better builds trust and credibility. Stories and analogies are powerful tools for explaining complex medical concepts plainly.  Do keyword research to understand what terminology your audience uses and link plain language to those search terms. Ketubot bookmark and checklist Masechet Sotah is sponsored by Ahava Leibtag in honor of Dr. Bryna Levy. "She helped me fall deep in love with learning." Today's daf is sponsored by Rikki and Alan Zibitt in loving memory of Rikki's mother, Frieda Carlin, Freydl bat Meir v'Rivka on her 8th yahrzeit. "May her neshama have an Aliyah. Mom, we love and miss you every day."  Today’s daf is sponsored by Dodi Lamm and Tina Lamm in loving memory of their wonderful aunt, Miriam Auslander, Miriam bat Meir Shmuel v’Perel, who passed away this week. "She was intelligent, creative, full of warmth and beloved by young and old.  We will miss her!" The first two parts of the process of a woman becoming a sotah are called kinui and stira. Kinui is a warning by the husband that his wife shouldn’t be alone in a room with a particular man. Stira is if she is then seen going into a room alone with that man. In the presence of how many witnesses does the husband need to do the kinui and how many witnesses are required to testify that she was in the room alone with that man after the warning was issued? Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Yehoshua disagree about the numbers and the Gemara later brings a third tannaitic opinion (Rabbi Yosi B’Rabbi Yehuda) as well. Why is Masechet Sotah in this placement among the masechtot? What does it teach us about the connection between a nazir and a sotah? Rav Shmuel bar Rav Yitzchak minimizes the blame placed on the sotah as he holds that it takes two to tango, meaning a woman who is not loyal is a reflection of the husband as well, as spouses are matched up to each other by their actions. Furthermore, Raba bar Rav Hanna says that when God makes matches it is as difficult as the splitting of the Red Sea. A difficulty is raised on Rav Shmuel from a statement of Rav that says that couples are matched up already from birth, before they have an opportunity to sin. How is that resolved? The Gemara points out that the debate about witnesses was only for kinui and setira, but if witnesses saw the couple engage in sexual relations, all agree that even with one witness, we can act on that testimony and forbid the wife to her husband and she will not be able to drink the sotah waters to try to prove her innocence. From where is this derived? After this is proven from verses, the Gemara questions this proof as it seems unnecessary, but eventually shows why it was necessary. What is the basis for the debate between Rabbi Eliezer, Rabbi Yehoshua and Rabbi Yosi b’Rabbi Yehuda? The rabbis raised an important critique against Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Yosi that if we allow only the husband’s testimony in part of the process, there will be no end to the cases in which husbands will forbid their wives to them. Nowadays (after the destruction of the Temple) that there is no way for a woman to prove her innocence, Rav Chanina warned that men should make sure not to warn their wives not be with a particular man as according to Rabbi Yosi son of Rabbi Yehuda, even without witnesses this could forbid her to him if she ends up going into a closed room with that man. Why is it called kinui when he warns her?  Two different suggestions are given.

However, if he has one brother and that brother happens to be forbidden to the wife due to one of 15 forbidden relationships described in the Mishna, she would be exempt from levirate marriage and would be permitted to marry anyone else. Not only is she permitted without levirate marriage, but if he had other wives, they would be permitted as well. All these laws are derived from the case of "his wife's sister" - if so, why does the Mishna start with "his daughter" and not that case?

Ahava Story This week, Jodi and Eliot talk about their interview with Ahava Leibtag of Aha Media about why she started her unique business, the worst day of her business, and the heartwarming best day. And of course, being Eliot and Jodi, they also make time to discuss the perils of putting beans up your nose, all while making it relevant to your business.   So what DOES this week’s episode say about your business? Ahava has a big “why” for her business. But yours doesn’t have to be as life or death as hers to matter. What if you just started with asking yourself: “what’s broken in the world, or my industry, that I want to fix?” What do you have the power to fix? What you are frustrated by can be the opening for you to really grow your business. If you are daunted or frustrated by something in your industry, chances are you are not the only one. Knowing this North Star is also a great way to know when you are going off track as well, and help you get realigned with what matters to you. It doesn’t have to be world hunger, but you do have to connect to something higher than just your profit margin. What enables you to do your best work? And even more importantly – what is your best work? And who do you do your best work for? And remember: there is enormous value in the entire span of real – the really good stuff and the really bad stuff - and trying to skip over any of it, like with a “silver lining”, can make for some missed opportunities. There is a gift in contrast that allows you to see more clearly. If it is lonely at the top, you’re doing it wrong. It really does take a village. There is so much to gain by trusting the smarts and the heart of the character of your team.   What story do you want to tell? So we told you our story – now it’s time to tell us yours! If you’re a business with an online presence, content marketing is critical to growing your business and building relationships with customers, which can have a direct impact your bottom line. In fact, creating quality content that is both relevant and useful to your audience can be the difference between being seen as a trusted leader in your field and being ignored. Too many organizations make the mistake, however, of not creating a sound content strategy, which inevitably leads them to making costly mistakes that confuse – and lose – potential clients. My guest on today’s episode of the Grow My Revenue Business Cast is content creation expert Ahava Leibtag. Ahava helps businesses develop strong, coherent content strategies that allow businesses to showcase their expertise online and be seen as leaders in their industries. Today, we cover the common mistakes businesses make when developing their content strategies, why it’s important to have a designated person leading the charge, and the number one thing to consider when creating content for your organization. I know you're going to love this talk, and you're going to learn a ton on today's edition of Grow My Revenue! Listen to this episode and discover: · What common mistakes companies make when creating content strategies. · Why having a content strategy – and someone to lead the effort – is so important. · What the number one thing to consider is when creating content. · The five questions companies should answer when creating content strategies. · When and where to draw the line between content creation and self promotion. · How asking (the right) probing questions will help companies understand their customers’ issues better, which leads to better content creation. · And so much more! Episode Overview Before we get into the five questions companies must answer to create effective content strategy plans, Ahava and I uncover the biggest mistakes businesses make regarding content marketing. Although Ahava says she sees a lot of missteps, we talk about three in particular.* After discussing the biggest mistakes in content marketing, we discuss the top five things that companies should ask themselves when creating content strategy. Before diving into strategy, Ahava always asks companies five questions.* “One of the clients we worked with had a 28 percent increase in social media traffic after we answered those questions, and they also had far less confusion among their content teams about how to write content,” Ahava said. Also on today's show, Ahava and I talk about how a company can effectively identify their audience, and the number one question an organization should be asking with regard to content creation. Tune in for all of that and more on today's Grow My Revenue with Ahava Leibtag. *For full show notes and other resources, please visit: http://www.ianaltman.com/podcast/ahava-leibtag/

Creating Valuable Content for Your Agency In this episode of The Smart Agency Master Class, I talk with Ahava Leibtag, and she is going to explain the six steps for creating valuable content to help you reach your target audience and increase your impact. Ahava is the president and owner of Aha Media Group, a content strategy and content consultancy in Washington, D.C. How can you generate leads for your agency? If you ask Ahava how to create great content, she will tell you step one is understanding your target audience. You need to know their business, understand their pain points, and know what solutions they are seeking. Know this before anything else because you can't start talking to people without knowing what they want to hear. You also need to spend time where your target audience is spending time. Don't feel like you need to be on all the social channels. If your target audience isn't on Twitter, why are you wasting your time and energy on Twitter? Once you've located your target audience make sure you master that technology. “Content and social marketing isn't all that simple,” Ahava says, “it's a lot of stuff to balance, so make sure you know how to use the technology.” Checklists are imperative in order to create valuable content that can generate new business for your agency. #1 - Findable. Make sure that you are utilizing appropriate keywords so your target audience finds you. Also think about how your content relates to other content. If someone is looking for a dresser, they may also be looking for a headboard. #2 - Readable. We've all seen it - bad web writing. Keep your content short and with the most important points at the top. People just don't read long-form content anymore, so don't have giant chunks of text. #3 - Understandable. It seems like a no-brainer, but you need to have your content easy to read, and not all about yourself. Make sure it is relevant to your audience. Show them that you understand their pain points. #4 - Actionable. Include clear calls to action in your content so the reader knows what to do next. Content exists for two reasons: because it supports business objectives and because it helps users accomplish their tasks. You want the person consuming your content to feel comfortable performing the action your requesting. #5 - Shareable. This does not mean going viral. Shareable content fills a need, is well executed, and simple to understand. It's the kind of content that can jump from the hands of the person that has it, right into the hands of the person who needs it. #6 - Mobile. It's clear mobile is huge in content and social marketing, but Ahava hasn't quite finalized its place. Since mobile can be standalone and fit within each of the other checklist items look for more to come in the future. Winning at content on the web. Be sure to pick up a copy of Ahava's book, The Digital Crown: Winning at Content on the Web. It's full of tips to simplify and refine your processes so you're putting out the best messaging possible as well as creating valuable content.
