Don't we all have direct access to it? The answer, as Aba Al-Sadiq explores, is both deep and transformative. Drawing from the teachings of Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita, he uncovers the mystery behind divine guidance and why it is channeled through specific human beings appointed by the Divine. This episode challenges the idea that we are all God, shedding light on the truth that, although God resides within us, only divinely chosen figures have the right to speak on God's behalf.

fWotD Episode 2838: Siege of Baghdad Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 10 February 2025 is Siege of Baghdad. The siege of Baghdad took place in early 1258 at Baghdad, the historic capital of the Abbasid Caliphate. After a series of provocations from its ruler, Caliph al-Musta'sim, a large army under Hulegu, a prince of the Mongol Empire, attacked the city. Within a few weeks, Baghdad fell and was sacked by the Mongol army—al-Musta'sim was killed alongside hundreds of thousands of his subjects. The city's fall has traditionally been seen as marking the end of the Islamic Golden Age; in reality, its ramifications are uncertain. After the accession of his brother Möngke Khan to the Mongol throne in 1251, Hulegu, a grandson of Genghis Khan, was dispatched westwards to Persia to secure the region. His massive army of over 138,000 men took years to reach the region but then quickly attacked and overpowered the Nizari Ismaili Assassins in 1256. The Mongols had expected al-Musta'sim to provide reinforcements for their army—the Caliph's failure to do so, combined with his arrogance in negotiations, convinced Hulegu to overthrow him in late 1257. Invading Mesopotamia from all sides, the Mongol army soon approached Baghdad, routing a sortie on 17 January 1258 by flooding their camp. They then invested Baghdad, which was left with around 30,000 troops. The assault began at the end of January. Mongol siege engines breached Baghdad's fortifications within a couple of days, and Hulegu's highly-trained troops controlled the eastern wall by 4 February. The increasingly desperate al-Musta'sim frantically tried to negotiate, but Hulegu was intent on total victory, even killing soldiers who attempted to surrender. The Caliph eventually surrendered the city on 10 February, and the Mongols began looting three days later. The total number of people who died is unknown, as it was likely increased by subsequent epidemics; Hulegu later estimated the total at around 200,000. After calling an amnesty for the pillaging on 20 February, Hulegu executed the caliph. In contrast to the exaggerations of later Muslim historians, Baghdad prospered under Hulegu's Ilkhanate, although it did decline in comparison to the new capital, Tabriz. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Monday, 10 February 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Siege of Baghdad on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Justin.

In response, his oldest brother and most likely candidate for their father's succession, Nizar, rose in revolt in Alexandriabut was defeated and executed. This caused a major split in the Isma'ili movement. Many communities, especially in Persia and Iraq, split off from the officially sponsored Isma'ili hierarchy and formed their own Nizari movement, holding Nizar and his descendants as the rightful imams.Throughout his reign, al-Musta'li remained subordinate to al-Afdal, who was the de facto ruler of the Fatimid Caliphate. The Caliphate's core territory in Egypt experienced a period of good government and prosperity, but the Fatimids suffered setbacks in Syria, where they were faced with the advance of the Sunni Seljuk Turks. Al-Afdal managed to recover the port city of Tyre, and even recapture Jerusalem in the turmoil caused by the arrival of the First Crusade in northern Syria. Despite Fatimid attempts to make common cause with the Crusaders against the Seljuks, the latter advanced south and captured Jerusalem in July 1099, sealing their success with a major victory over the Fatimid army led by al-Afdal at the Battle of Ascalon shortly after. Al-Musta'li died in 1101 and was succeeded by his five-year-old son, al-Amir.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:53 UTC on Sunday, 15 September 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Al-Musta'li on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Kimberly.

In this heartfelt episode of "The Father's Truth," host Alan Donovan sits down with Caliph, a Toronto-based artist, and new father. Kalief talks about his journey from pursuing a challenging career in music to finding success in real estate and eventually returning to music inspired by fatherhood. This episode is a deep dive into Caliph's latest song dedicated to the themes of fatherhood and paternal relationships, reflecting the often-ignored emotional narratives in modern rap music. Alan and Caliph discuss the inspiration behind this powerful track, which focuses on relationship with his own father, the struggles they faced, and the newfound understanding they share now. Caliph shares his intent to shine a light on the positive aspects of fatherhood, especially in the black community, addressing the often misleading stereotypes about absentee fathers. The episode also touches upon the broader implications of fatherhood and men's mental health, and Caliph's plans for future releases that continue to explore these important themes. The Power of Authentic Music: Caliph believes in creating music that resonates with genuine experiences, focusing on the seldom-discussed themes of fatherhood and love. Inspiration from Fatherhood: Becoming a father drastically changed Caliph's perspective, pushing him back into music to leave a legacy for his son. Breaking Stereotypes: The song aims to counter the stereotype of absentee black fathers by showcasing the positive, loving relationships many have with their children. Emotional Storytelling: Through his lyrics, Caliph addresses the complex relationship with his father and the journey towards mutual respect and understanding. Upcoming Projects: Caliph hints at more music centered around men's mental health and treating personal struggles with dignity and respect. "We need to tell the stuff that we all feel... it doesn't always have to be dark." - Caliph "I watched firsthand how it just destroyed him and how hard he had to fight to get shared custody." - Caliph on his friend's custody battle "You want to be an inspiration for some young kid or some young father that is scared to death about whether or not they're going to be a good father." - Alan "The theme of the song is really just to show that the black nuclear family still exists too." - Caliph "I'm the artist. Look at me my husband, heal my broken spirit."In his deep daydream he kicked his foot up and knocked over all of his glassware.Everything broke. He was left with nothing. He cried and hid his face.A beautiful lady was passing by and took pity on him.She gave him 500 dirhams. When he was home later that evening, an old lady knocked on his door. She asked him if she could enter his home to wash and prepare herself for prayer. When she was about to leave, he offered her 2 dirhams. She said, "I am not a beggar. I don't need it"She said she was servant of the rich lady who had had given him money earlier that day.She invited him to come and meet the beautiful and wealthy lady. She said that he should bring all of his gold and riches with him to make a good impression. He entered a large room, with wonderful carpets and curtains. The young lady met him, wearing sumptuous clothes. Do you know where I can weigh my 1,100 dinars?"She took the bait and invited him to her home, where the young lady and slave were waiting. When the large black slave came, he grabbed his sword and killed him.He then called out, "Salt girl, where are you?"When she came, he took the sword and killed her, too.He called out, "Cellar-guardian, where are you?"When the old lady came, my brother said, "Do you know who I am, you old witch?"She said that she did not know him.He told her who he was and about the 500 gold pieces. She pleaded for her life.He took the sword and killed her.He found the young lady and she begged for her life.He asked her why she did such deceptive things? She said that she was tricked by the old lady and the slave, too.She told my brother that for three years she was forced to be part of their game and tricks. He believed her and asked her, "Is there anything valuable in this house?"She said yes, but it was so much that he would need ten men to carry it out. So,he hired help and when he returned, the girl was gone and nothing was left in the house. He knew then he was a victim of her hoax.He stayed at the house, but the next morning 20 soldiers came saying, "The Governor wants you!"He offered them money but they refused. They grabbed him and took him to the Governor. He told the Governor everything that happened to him.The Governor showed him mercy and said, "Leave this city or I will hang you."When my brother was travelling outside of the city he was attacked by thieves and they cut off his ears. The barber told the Caliph that when he heard this story, about his brother, he found his brother and secretly took care of him.

Seven years ago, I wrote an online serial novel, Unsong, about alternate history American kabbalists. You can read the online version here. The online version isn't going anywhere, but lots of people asked for a hard copy. I tried to get the book formally published, but various things went wrong and I procrastinated. Commenter Pycea finally saved me from myself and helped get it published on Amazon (thank you!) You can now buy the book here, for $19.99. I think the published version is an improvement over the original. I rewrote three or four chapters I wasn't satisfied with, and changed a few character names to be more kabbalistically appropriate. The timeline and history have been rectified, and there are more details on the 2000 - 2015 period and how UNSONG was founded. I gave the political situation a little more depth (watch for the Archon of Arkansas, the Shogun of Michigan, and the Caliph of California). And the sinister Malia Ngo has been replaced by the equally sinister, but actual-character-development-having, Ash Bentham. All of the parts that were actually good have been kept. Thanks to everyone for being patient, and special thanks to Pycea for making this happen. https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/unsong-available-in-paperback
