In his 1943 book The Abolition of Man, C. S. Lewis wrote: “The serious magical endeavor and the serious scientific endeavor are twins: One was sickly and died, the other strong and throve. But they were twins. They were born of the same impulse.” In this Uncommon Knowledge with Peter Robinson, mathematician and philosopher David Berlinski, intelligent design advocate Stephen Meyer, and Associate Professor of Philosophy of Religion at Cambridge University, James Orr explore the parallels between scientific and magical endeavors, referencing C. S. Lewis's notion that both were born from the same impulse, with one thriving and the other fading. They also explore the historical relationship between science and religion, noting how early scientists such as Newton and Galileo saw their work as uncovering divine order, in contrast with the more secular views of modern scientists such as Steven Weinberg and Stephen Hawking. The discussion also reveals deep philosophical and historical insights into the evolution of scientific thought and its complex relationship with materialism and religion.

In this enlightening episode, we sit down with renowned philosopher and theologian Dr. William Lane Craig to navigate the intricate intersections of faith, science, and philosophy. Our conversation opens with Dr. Craig elucidating his stance on 'Creation Ex Nihilo,' integrating theological doctrine with contemporary scientific understanding, particularly in relation to the Big Bang theory. He explains why 'Creation Ex Deo' is in direct opposition to the biblical narrative, challenging the notion that the universe emerged from God and is inherently united with his own being. Dr. Craig makes a case that aligns with the Maimonidean worldview, showcasing why panentheism and pantheism contradict the core tenets of our respective faiths. The conversation takes a philosophical turn as Dr. Craig discusses his agreement with the Kalam cosmological argument, a perspective shared across Jewish and Islamic traditions, highlighting the universal quest for understanding the origins of the universe. Addressing criticisms from atheistic circles, Dr. Craig confronts the "God of the gaps" argument and the counter notion of a "science of the gaps," particularly in relation to the Multiverse Theory and the complexity of DNA. He presents a compelling case for theism, challenging the atheistic critiques with reasoned arguments and evidence. Our dialogue also ventures into the realms of mathematical harmony and the laws of nature, with Dr. Craig articulating how these elements inherently point to a Creator, offering a profound reflection on the order and intelligibility of our world. Dr. Craig also addresses the challenges posed by skeptics of evolution, such as Dr. David Berlinski, and defends the scientific validity of an evolutionary perspective within a theistic framework. Lastly, Dr. Craig addresses the topic of the universe's age, which has been a point of contention among our respective coreligionists. This fascinating interview will not disappoint. Are humans progressing morally as well as materially? What does it mean to be human in the cosmos? On this ID The Future, we bring you the second half of a stimulating conversation between Dr. David Berlinski and host Eric Metaxas on the subject of Berlinski's recent book Human Nature. In Human Nature, Berlinski argues that the utopian view that humans are progressing toward evolutionary and technological perfection is wishful thinking. Men are not about to become like gods. "I'm a strong believer in original sin," quips Berlinski in his discussion with Metaxas. In other words, he believes not only that humans are fundamentally distinct from the rest of the biological world, but also that humans are prone to ignorance and depravity as well as wisdom and nobility. During the second half of their discussion, Berlinski and Metaxas compare and contrast the ideas of thinkers like psychologist Steven Pinker, author Christopher Hitchens, and physicist Steven Weinberg. The pair also spar gracefully over the implications of human uniqueness. Berlinski, though candid and self-critical, is unwilling to be pigeonholed. Metaxas, drawing his own conclusions about the role of mind in the universe, challenges Berlinski into moments of clarity with his usual charm. The result is an honest, probing, and wide-ranging conversation about the nature of science and the human condition. This is Part 2 of a two-part interview. Source

Eminent paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould has argued that humans differ only in degree, not kind, from other organisms, and to think otherwise betrays an ancient and outdated prejudice. But does this match up with what science has revealed in the last century? On this ID The Future, we are pleased to share the first half of an engaging conversation between Dr. David Berlinski and host Eric Metaxas on the subject of Berlinski's recent book Human Nature. Some argue that humans are growing more peaceful, enlightened, and improved by the year, and that a coming technological singularity may well usher in utopia. Berlinski isn't buying it. "There is no society without its underlying ideology," he writes in Human Nature. A universal civilization requires a universal theory, and the prevailing grand narrative preferred by most materialist scientists today is fueled largely by Darwin's theory of evolution. But is the world of matter the only world that matters? In this conversation and in his book, Berlinski argues that human beings have a fundamental essence that is radically different from the essence of other organisms and that cannot be changed at will. It's a view that is supported by the latest evidence about life and the universe in biology, chemistry, physics, and even cosmology. And it represents a fatal flaw in the Darwinian story. This is Part 1 of a 2-part conversation. This interview originally aired as a Socrates in the City event in 2022. We are grateful to Eric Metaxas for permission to share it. The new book Science After Babel is again in the spotlight here at ID the Future, with its author, philosopher and mathematician David Berlinski, and host Andrew McDiarmid teasing various elements of the work. The pair discuss the puzzling relationship between purely immaterial mathematical concepts (the only kind) and the material world; World War II codebreaker and computing pioneer Alan Turing, depicted in the 2014 film The Imitation Game; and the sense that the field of physics, once seemingly on the cusp of a theory of everything, finds itself at an impasse. Then, too,  Berlinski writes, there is the mystery of life itself. If scientists thought that its origin and nature would soon yield to scientific reductionism, they have been disappointed. Life's “fantastic and controlled complexity, its brilliant inventiveness and diversity, its sheer difference from anything else in this or any other world” remains before us, suggesting, as Berlinski puts it, “a kind of intelligence evident nowhere else.” Get your copy of the book at www.scienceafterbabel.com. On today's ID the Future, host Andrew McDiarmid rings up Science After Babel author David Berlinski in Paris to discuss the philosopher's latest book. Berlinski is at his cultivated best as the two discuss everything from the biblical Tower of Babel as a metaphor for modern materialistic science, to his friendship with the brilliant and colorful French intellectual Marcel Schützenberger, a world-class mathematician who was self-taught and, as we learn here, came within a hair's breadth of being swept up in the Chinese Revolution. Berlinski also reflects on the seminal 1966 WISTAR symposium, which laid out some mathematical challenges to Darwinism, challenges that Berlinski says remain unanswered to this day. At the same time, Berlinski gives the devil—here Darwinism—its due. Tune in for this and more, and order your copy of Berlinski's Science After Babel here. Source

"Why are we waiting for people to see a psychologist to learn amazing tools? Why not teach them to young adolescence before they stumble across adversity."This episode with Ben and David deep dives into the power of building meaningful and shared experiences. We discuss the implications of COVID on students and the need for us to purposely create experiences for them to connect with one another. They share their passion for acknowledging that as humans, we won't always be happy. They share tools they teach students to understand and recognise different emotions and feelings and the ways they can make space for them. Ben and David share vulnerable moments and explain how Brene Browns line 'The story I'm telling myself is' is a foundation of their professional conversations together as they expand Toolbox Education. They share how their engaging and relatable workshops teach students how to apply tools from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to their own lives. This start-up initiative is doing extremely well in its very early days and Ben and David have found a huge gap in 21st century education and I can't wait to see where this goes. Contra Steven Pinker, Berlinski insists that there is little if any evidence that human evil is being steadily rolled back by the spread of secular values. The Devil's Delusion: Atheism and Its Scientific Pretensions by David BerlinskiMilitant atheism is on the rise. Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Daniel Dennett, and Christopher Hitchens have dominated bestseller lists with books denigrating religious belief as dangerous foolishness. And these authors are merely the leading edge of a far larger movement–one that now includes much of the scientific community. “The attack on traditional religious thought,” writes David Berlinski in The Devil’s Delusion, “marks the consolidation in our time of science as the single system of belief in which rational men and women might place their faith, and if not their faith, then certainly their devotion.” A secular Jew, Berlinski nonetheless delivers a biting defense of religious thought. An acclaimed author who has spent his career writing about mathematics and the sciences, he turns the scientific community’s cherished skepticism back on itself, daring to ask and answer some rather embarrassing questions: Has anyone provided a proof of God’s inexistence? Not even close. Has quantum cosmology explained the emergence of the universe or why it is here? Not even close. Have the sciences explained why our universe seems to be fine-tuned to allow for the existence of life? Not even close. Are physicists and biologists willing to believe in anything so long as it is not religious thought? Close enough. Has rationalism in moral thought provided us with an understanding of what is good, what is right, and what is moral? Not close enough. Has secularism in the terrible twentieth century been a force for good? Not even close to being close. Is there a narrow and oppressive orthodoxy of thought and opinion within the sciences? Close enough. Does anything in the sciences or in their philosophy justify the claim that religious belief is irrational? Not even ballpark. Is scientific atheism a frivolous exercise in intellectual contempt? Dead on. Berlinski does not dismiss the achievements of western science. The great physical theories, he observes, are among the treasures of the human race. But they do nothing to answer the questions that religion asks, and they fail to offer a coherent description of the cosmos or the methods by which it might be investigated. This brilliant, incisive, and funny book explores the limits of science and the pretensions of those who insist it can be–indeed must be–the ultimate touchstone for understanding our world and ourselves.

Mathematical Challenges To Darwin’s Theory Of Evolution, With David Berlinski, Stephen Meyer, And David Gelernter

Uncommon Knowledge

Recorded on June 6, 2019 in Italy. Based on new evidence and knowledge that functioning proteins are extremely rare, should Darwin’s theory of evolution be dismissed, dissected, developed or replaced with a theory of intelligent design? Has Darwinism really failed? Peter Robinson discusses it with David Berlinski, David Gelernter, and Stephen Meyer, who have raised doubts about Darwin’s theory in their two books and essay, respectively The Deniable Darwin, Darwin’s Doubt, and “Giving Up Darwin” (published in the Claremont Review of Books). Robinson asks them to convince him that the term “species” has not been defined by the authors to Darwin’s disadvantage. Gelernter replies to this and explains, as he expressed in his essay, that he sees Darwin’s theory as beautiful (which made it difficult for him to give it up): “Beauty is often a telltale sign of truth. Beauty is our guide to the intellectual universe—walking beside us through the uncharted wilderness, pointing us in the right direction, keeping us on track—most of the time.” Gelernter notes that there’s no reason to doubt that Darwin successfully explained the small adjustments by which an organism adapts to local circumstances: changes to fur density or wing style or beak shape. Yet there are many reasons to doubt whether Darwin can answer the hard questions and explain the big picture—not the fine-tuning of existing species but the emergence of new ones. Meyer explains Darwinism as a comprehensive synthesis, which gained popularity for its appeal. Meyer also mentions that one cannot disregard that Darwin’s book was based on the facts present in the 19th century. Robinson then asks the panel whether Darwin’s theory of gradual evolution is contradicted by the explosion of fossil records in the Cambrian period, when there was a sudden occurrence of many species over the span of approximately seventy million years (Meyer’s noted that the date range for the Cambrian period is actually narrowing). Meyer replies that even population genetics, the mathematical branch of Darwinian theory, has not been able to support the explosion of fossil records during the Cambrian period, biologically or geologically. Robinson than asks about Darwin’s main problem, molecular biology, to which Meyer explains, comparing it to digital world, that building a new biological function is similar to building a new code, which Darwin could not understand in his era. Berlinski does not second this and states that the cell represents very complex machinery, with complexities increasing over time, which is difficult to explain by a theory. Gelernter throws light on this by giving an example of a necklace on which the positioning of different beads can lead to different permutations and combinations; it is really tough to choose the best possible combination, more difficult than finding a needle in a haystack. He seconds Meyer’s statement that it was impossible for Darwin to understand that in his era, since the math is easy but he did not have the facts. Meyer further explains how difficult it is to know what a protein can do to a cell, the vast combinations it can produce, and how rare is the possibility of finding a functional protein. He then talks about the formation of brand-new organisms, for which mutation must affect genes early in the life form’s development in order to control the expression of other genes as the organism grows. “Intelligent design” is something only Meyer agrees with, but Berlinski replies that as a scientific approach, one can agree or disagree with it, but should not reject it. Meyer talks about the major discovery in the 1950s and ’60s concerning the DNA molecule, which encodes information in a somewhat digital format, providing researchers with the opportunity to trace the information back to its source. Gelernter argues that if there was/is an intelligent designer then why is the design not the most efficient, rather than prone to all sorts of problems, including the mental and emotional. Robinson quotes Gelernter: “Darwinism is no longer just a scientific theory but a basis of a worldview, and an emergency . . . religion for the many troubled souls who need one.” Gelernter further adds that it’s a fantastically challenging problem that Darwin chose to address. How difficult will it be for scientists to move on from Darwin’s theory of evolution? Will each scientist need to examine the evidence for his or herself? These are some of most important questions facing science in the 21st century.

David Berlinski is a senior fellow at the Discovery Institute's Center for Science and Culture, a contributing editor at Inference: International Review of Science, and author of many books. Berlinski discusses his book The Deniable Darwin and lays out how Charles Darwin has failed to explain the origin of species through his theory of evolution. Berlinski explains that change in biology is not continuous—it’s radical, something which Darwinian theory fails to explain. He discusses how Darwinian evolution is blind to the future as there is no fidelity to the facts. He gives examples of amino acids and dogs and explains why there cannot be just one species. He further strengthens his statement by saying that everything cannot be accounted for as being random: there should be some scientific evidence to support it. Berlinski responds to Peter Robinson’s question about Razib Khan’s statement to the effect that, “The seeds of both tyranny and democracy were sown by the evolutionary pressures that shaped humans over millions of years.” He argues that the deepest aspects of our nature are not formed by evolutionary pressures because evolution is relatively neutral. He also replies to Robinson’s question about a remark of Pope Benedict XVI to the effect that Western thought, by its very nature, “excludes the question of God, making it appear an unscientific or pre-scientific question.” He explains that it is not right to argue that physical theories imply that the conclusion is antitheist, as mere exclusion in these theories does not imply that. Robinson further asks Berlinski’s views about the growing population of Islam and decreasing population of Europeans in Europe. Berlinski explains that Muslims take religion seriously, but theology/religion has more or less disappeared from the Western habit of thought. He states that faith and religion should come together. Berlinski further talks about how Albert Einstein’s comments disprove God, not because he is an antitheist, but because Einstein wanted to push quantum theory and his belief in the rational universe. Finally, Robinson asks about Europe’s survival in terms of economy, population, and growth, and Berlinski says that the nation-state is an idea that is no longer there and that patriotism is disappearing.

What are the big assumptions you’re making in your investment decisions? Can you list them? Is there any chance they’re WRONG? I’m Bryan Ellis. We’ll look at this serious but nearly never-discussed issue right now in Episode #310 of Self-Directed Investor Talk.----Hello, Self-Directed Investors, all across the fruited plane! Welcome to the SHOW OF RECORD for savvy self-directed investors like you. This is episode #310 of Self-Directed Investor Talk, and should you be so inclined, you’re welcomed to visit today’s show page to get a transcript and links and resources that are relevant to today’s discussion. The address for the episode #310 show page is https://SDITalk.com/310So the big question today: What are the big assumptions you’re using as a basis for your investment decisions? More importantly, is there a chance any of them are wrong? That’s a big, important question. Here’s some context for why I ask it:I’m something of a science geek. I routinely and very happily spend a relatively large amount of time learning what’s going on in the world of scientific research. One of the geekiest things that I do – and that I really love to do – is to watch formal debates that feature scientists and philosophers duking it out intellectually to see where everyone’s ideas fit in the grand scheme of things. And do you know what kind of evidence I’m seeing a LOT in the last 3 years… I mean, a LOT of it? And as I answer that question, remember that the topic of today’s show is a look at the big assumptions you’re making in your portfolio, and whether they could possibly be WRONG.So here’s what I’m seeing a lot of: I’m seeing a LOT of scientists who are absolutely the very top people in their respective fields offering very, very serious scientific resistance to the famous theory of evolution posited by Charles Darwin in the mid 1800’s. I mean, legitimate, top-tier people like the famed synthetic organic chemist Dr. James Tour at Rice University. There’s also Dr. Marcos Eberlin, the internationally renowned mass spectrometry expert at the University of Campinas in Brazil. And Michael Behe, the respected biochemist at Lehigh University. Now some people try to disregard the opinions of those guys because all of them have religious beliefs which would predispose them to resist the theory of evolution. But then you’d have to explain away highly-regarded atheistic and/or agnostic scientists and professors who also openly criticize and question Darwinian evolution like famed philosopher and mathematician Dr. David Berlinski, biologist Dr. Denis Noble at the University of Oxford, and professor Thomas Nagle at NYU. And frankly, this is only scratching the surface of dissent among serious academics and scientists of today. If you knew the extent of it all, you’d be utterly blown away. Now look, this isn’t a discussion about Darwinian evolution. Unless I have the pleasure of meeting you in person and you’d like to discuss this, then right now I don’t care what you think about that question and you need not care what I think, either. But the question is this: Can you think of any assumption that has been pounded into all of as being any more fundamental than the theory of evolution? I can’t either… and yet, whatever your position on the matter, any objective look at that theory suggests there’s a real chance that, after all of this time, the entire theory is just a crumbling house of cards. We don’t know that yet, of course, but it surely looks that way.So let’s shift that line of thinking over to our investments. Ask yourself: What are the core, operating assumptions you’re making each and every time you make an investment decision? The assumptions that are so deep that you don’t even think about them consciously?I’m thinking about this for myself, and some of them are:· Paying less tax is better than paying more tax· Making more profit is better than making less profit· Only take calculated risks· Physical assets are more secure than paper assets· Etc…Now having thought about this for a bit of time, I’m coming up with a lot of fundamental assumptions that I’m making, far more than the few I’ve mentioned here. And here’s how this becomes interesting:If considering each and every one of my fundamental assumptions, I then ask myself these questions:· Is this absolutely true?· Is this absolutely false?· Is this relatively true or relatively false, depending on the circumstances?· Is there a better assumption that I could adopt? This has been enlightening for me, my friends, for this reason: I’ve again shown myself that having extremely dogmatic rules about anything can be a very dangerous thing UNLESS you take the time to clarify not just the rule or the assumption, but also clarify what I call the two C’s: context and caveats. For example: Physical assets are, I think, more secure as an investment than paper assets. But a relevant context might be that that’s true only in an environment where it’s legal and practical to sell that asset when I need to do so, since physical items are usually not highly liquid. And a caveat to that rule might be that if owning the physical asset entails more direct, physical involvement in the asset than I am willing or able to provide, then in that case, it might make sense for me to do something like own shares in a real estate investment trust rather than owning real estate directly myself. These are simple examples, but I’ve learned a lot about myself and my assumptions I preparing for this episode… and where those assumptions may not be serving me well. Let’s you and I do our best to see to it that the only things that are crumbling are faltering scientific theories rather than our life’s savings. My friends, invest wisely today, and live well forever. When former skeptic and seventeen-year-old Ravi Zacharias heard the words of Jesus in John 14:19, “Because I live, you also will live,” the trajectory of his life changed forever. In a time of helplessness and unbelief—when he was on a bed of suicide—the truth of Scripture brought hope to Zacharias, and he committed his life to Christ, promising, “I will leave no stone unturned in my pursuit of truth.” Earlier in John 14, Jesus says, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” This verse has become the cornerstone of Zacharias's ultimate mission as a Christian apologist and evangelist: to present and defend the truth of Jesus Christ that others may find life in Him. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ John Charlton Polkinghorne KBE FRS (born 16 October 1930) is an English theoretical physicist, theologian, writer and Anglican priest. On Monday’s Mark Levin show, Iran has always denied that they had a nuclear weapons project, but now Israel has found tens of thousands of pages of evidence that says otherwise. How in the world could any American president cut a deal like the Iran one? Barack Obama didn’t just appease them, he provided them the money to get their nuclear weapons and his people today are running around saying the fact that Iran lied about what it was doing is more reason we need the deal - that’s completely llogical. From domestic surveillance to the unmasking of American citizens to this Iran deal, the Obama administration has to be the worst administration in American history.  Israel's Ambassador to the United States, Ron Dermer, calls is to discuss the new findings from Israel, which was not just a smoking gun, but it was a smoking bomb. This Iran deal brought war much closer for Israel and their allies in the region. Meanwhile, Mitch McConnell is like a mob boss, why does the Republicans keep electing him as Senate majority leader?  Despite increasing threats of a trade war between the Trump Administration and the Chinese government, McConnell's wife, Commerce Secretary Elaine Chao's family’s ties to the Chinese government do not seem to have cooled.  Finally, David Berlinski was the guest on Fox News’ Life Liberty and Levin to discuss atheism and Darwinism. Join Devin and Melissa Pellew as we discuss issues related to Christian Apologetics, theology and biblical worldview issues. This week, we will be discussing the new book, Debating Darwin's Doubt: A Scientific Controversy That Can No Longer Be Denied, edited by David Klinghoffer. The book includes ten chapters written by Dr. Steven Meyer and contributions from biologists Richard Sternberg, Douglas Axe, and Ann Gauger; philosopher of biology Paul Nelson; mathematicians William Dembski and David Berlinski; and Center for Science and Culture research coordinator, Casey Luskin. During the first hour, we'll be joined by attorney Casey Luskin of The Discovery Institute in Seattle. In his role at Discovery Institute, as Research Coordinator for the Center for Science and Culture, Casey assists and defends scientists, educators, and students who seek to freely study, research, and teach about the scientific debate over Darwinian evolution and intelligent design. Casey will discuss the information he researched and shared in the book. During the second hour, we'll be joined by Dr. Steven Meyer. Stephen C. Meyer received his Ph.D. in the philosophy of science from the University of Cambridge. A former geophysicist and college professor, he now directs Discovery Institute’s Center for Science and Culture in Seattle. In addition to his book, Darwin's Doubt and his work on Debating Darwin's Doubt, that we will be discussing, he has also authored Signature in the Cell: DNA and the Evidence for Intelligent Design. Dr. Meyer's bio includes many published editorials in national newspapers and appearances on national television and radio programs as well as many other popular scientific documentaries. David Berlinski, resident of Paris and star of the new Expelled documentary, holds a Ph.D. in the philosophy of mathematics from Princeton. A self-identified “secular Jew,” he earned kudos for his award-winning book A Tour of the Calculus, followed by several other books on the history of mathematics. In the past decade, has emerged as one of the most controversial and enigmatic figures who has plunged into the debate over Darwinism and Design. He is interviewed here about his new book "The Devil’s Delusion," which responds to the flood of polemical books from the “new atheists” such as Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris. With barbed wit, Berlinski explains why and how these “evangelists for atheism”--and their zealous tracts--fall flat on their intellectual faces.
