Celebrities aren't typically huge fans of Modernist architecture. Most prefer a 1930's mansion or an Italianate villa. But there are a few, like Jennifer Aniston, Holland Taylor, Scott Caan, Kelly Lynch, Leonardo DiCaprio, and others who keep Modernist houses in the spotlight.  Today we'll talk with Alison Martino, producer, historian, and preservationist, the Godmother of Old Hollywood and Los Angeles.  Next up, Frank Sinatra expert Bill Boggs, and later, we'll learn about the Modernist town of Columbus Indiana from author Matt Shaw, with a new book.

Today on part two of our encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we again talk to Alison Martino, daughter of singer Al Martino and guardian of her beloved LA and her Vintage Los Angeles social media properties. And because both Alison and host josh Mills are die hard denizens of the city of angels, there is a lot (and we mean a lot) of hand wringing over the changes that have happened to the city over the last few decades. Of course we continue our conversation about what it was like growing up as the daughter of her popular singer pop as we again delve into Paramount+'s The Offer about the making of The Godfather. Or maybe it was the maiming of The Godfather. Well, it depends on the viewer of course. We also get into old  schoolLas Vegas and how it worked when it was run by ‘the outfit' rather than corporations, why Vegas wasn't on the Martino touring circuit and more. So sit back and take a second listen to the second part of our interview with Alison Martino. Another child of a celebrity, interviewed by the child of a celebrity. Take a listen.

Today on another encore edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Alison Martino for the second time about growing up the daughter of singer/actor Al Martino. As the founder of Vintage LA, Alison has created an online juggernaut that has hundreds of thousands of fans wanting to know more about significant current landmarks as well as lost LA as well. We spoke to Alison in part one of this conversation on the heels of the Paramount+ series The Offer, which is based on the alleged story behind bringing The Godfather to the big screen. Of course, Al Martino plays the role of Johnny Fontaine in Part One and sings “I Have But One Heart” in the film. We also delve into her founding VLA and how it started almost as a lark. We also speak to Alison about her other gig, on Spectrum TV, bringing television viewers a slice of Los Angeles on the small screen in addition to devices of all kinds. It was great to talk to Alison, someone whose passion for LA is found in her collection of menu's, matchbooks, ephemera and other collections she passionately collects. Oy the kvetching in this one! This is part two of our conversation with Alison Martino and boy are she and our host working themselves up in a lather about the changes in LA. That's what happens when you get two born and bred Los Angelinos together talking about Vintage Los Angeles. But when you have a brand such as Alison's own Vintage LA, how could you not? So just get ready for a deep dive into long gone LA landmarks like The Garden of Allah, Butterfields, House of Blues, Tower Records and more. Aside from old LA, we also get to take hear some fabulous insider stories about Alison's dad Al Martino getting the part of Johnny Fontaine in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfatherwhich is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year as well as Paramount+'s streaming service limited series, The Offer. What's the series about? It's about the alleged/fictional/partly true story of how Al Martino got offered the part in The Godfather. If you love the inner workings of old Vegas, check out the stories about when ‘da boys' ran it as we hear first-hand accounts of how to get guests on the floor and gambling when Edie Adams was in the room  We are certainly eavesdropping on a conversation today, which  is very much an apt description of today's episode suggested by Alison. So thank you Alison. And we will take you up on the offer to host an upcoming episode….Josh would love to be your guest. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast.

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Alison Martino. Again. As in a second time. Alison was one of our first interviews we did post pandemic so it seemed only fitting that  we connect with her again as we are slowly coming out of the pandemic. It also seemed fitting that she would be the perfect person to be the first guest we've ever had on the podcast twice. Sure it didn't hurt that Alison's first episode was one of our most listened to episodes but what was fantastic about that first conversation was that both she and our host Josh Mills really had so many experiences that hit home that, in some ways, their experiences intertwined. And as Alison says on this episode, “There's a difference between show business and acting.' How right you are Alison. On this episode, we talk about her father, singer and yes actor, Al Martino who is having a resurgence of sorts in 2022 with the 50th anniversary of The Godfather this year but also that his song “I Have But One Heart” is featured in the film and the soundtrack to the superhero megahit, The Batman. We also talk about a new series coming from Paramount+ called The Offer which is based on the (somewhat) fictionalized tale of how Al Martino got the part of Johnny Fontaine in The Godfather. And while this is very much an Al-fest (not the real thing but an incredible simulation), we also do a deep dive into Alison's Vintage LA phenomenon. What started out as Facebook group made on a lark has become a massive social media presence and has literally hundreds of thousands of followers on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. We delve into the beginnings of how this passion for her hometown spawned a rabid and  loyal fanbase which has turned into a career as a journalist for Spectrum TV, a writer and also a recognized resource for people who live in and are fascinated with the City of Angels all over the world. If it's happening in Los Angeles, you kind of do need Alison's stamp of approval to make it a truly successful event. It's so great to talk to Alison a second time as the Los Angeles from our youth is still very much alive on this podcast even if Greenblatt's delicatessen is not. These memories and conversation starters are all right here, in this episode, of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.

We've got a lot going on right here in LA. And this is a very L.A.-centric episode of the show. The City Of Angels has undergone a lot of turmoil in the past two years. Like many cities in America, it has a houselessness problem that is beyond pale. Construction is running wild but it doesn't seem to be for anything that anyone wants or particularly needs, and yet, it is still L.A., and even the most dour predictions for the future are leavened by a glimmer of hope that some how, some way, something decent will prevail. We have two fantastic guests. Karie Bible came to Los Angeles by way of Texas, fell in love with LA and its history, and submerged herself in that history by way of the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, where she has been giving tours for lo about 20 years now. She has amazing stories of both the living and the dead, and we are super happy to have her today. And also, our old pal Alison Martino, a famed Los Angeles historian, she of the the L.A. Alison founded Vintage Los Angeles, "Documenting the history of Los Angeles by the people who lived it. This week on We Know Weho we are joined by special guest Alison Martino. Alison is a native Los Angeles-based television producer, documentarian, columnist for Los Angeles Magazine and lifelong resident of the city. Her zeal for history and lifelong penchant for collecting has resulted in one of the largest collections of restaurant memorabilia, photographs, postcards, and matchbooks. Martino's affection for old Hollywood and her hometown's architecture led her to create the wildly popular Vintage Los Angeles (VLA)— an ever growing photo-centric Facebook page dedicated to highlighting L.A.'s physical transformation during the 20th Century, as well as its history as the center of the entertainment industry and community. Martino is also an advocate for historic preservation of the architecture that makes Los Angeles and its surrounding communities like West Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica unique, and for the buildings that are iconic representations of the entertainment industry. She worked to bring back the original Chasen's Chili, has helped to preserve the original caricatures on the walls of The Palm Restaurant and save vintage signs on the Sunset Strip. Los Angeles is a city with an incredible history, and few know it better than Alison Martino (@alisonmartino) founder of Vintage Los Angeles. She joins the show, talking about what shapes our perceptions of the city, starting with the influence of pop culture. What qualifies as "vintage," in a city like this? What separates one era from another? Does she have a favorite? We talk about the influence of food and restaurants on the formation of classic L.A. culture. What were some of the best? What were they like, in the days before cell phone and the web changed the way people and celebrities interact? What makes something historic in a city like Los Angeles? What should be preserved, when everything can't be? A great, wide-ranging conversation about a great city not everyone understands.

Two great guests today, Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago is here. The Pixies have been one of my favorite bands since I first started seeing them when we were both starting out back in Boston. And I'm incredibly happy to have Joey on the show. They have a new album out called Beneath The Eeire. It's great. I own it. You should too. Also, Los Angeles historian Alison Martino is here. Alison was a producer on Hollywood Mysteries and Scandals and runs the Vintage Los Angeles Facebook and Instagram accounts. She grew up in Los Angeles. Her dad was the singer Al Martino who played Johnny Fontaine in The Godfather, so she has seen it all from a first hand perspective.
