Rockshow Episode 190 Pixies The Pixies, an American alternative rock band, formed in Boston in 1986. Comprising Black Francis (vocals, guitar), Joey Santiago (guitar), Kim Deal (bass, vocals), and David Lovering (drums), they gained prominence with their unique blend of punk, surf rock, and surreal lyrics. Albums like “Surfer Rosa” (1988) and “Doolittle” (1989) solidified their influence on the '80s and '90s alternative scene. Internal tensions led to a hiatus in 1993, but they reunited in 2004, continuing to release music and tour. After her 1996 self-released EP was picked-up and re-released by MCA, Holly McNarland set out to make her debut album Stuff. In the wake of the success of fellow Canadian singer/songwriters Alanis Morissette and Sarah McLachlan, the table was set for McNarland to make similar waves even if the alternative rock field was getting more crowded by the day. While there is no "You Oughta Know" or "Building a Mystery" on Stuff, there is McNarland's voice, which finds the balance between on edgy angst rockers one moment and soaring pop balladry the next. Backed by a solid band, including then ex-Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago in the studio, the songs are elevated beyond straightforward singer-songwriter material to deeper depths thanks to occasional cello and synths popping in and out of tracks. But while the first half is full of knock-out material, the back half left us divided on experiments with trip-hop and Seattle grunge. For the 35th anniversary of Pixies' landmark debut album, SURFER ROSA, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Charles Thompson and Joey Santiago bonded as suitemates at the University of Massachusettes Amherst, they decided to form a band. By putting an ad in the Boston Phoenix for “a female vocalist into Hüsker Dü and Peter, Paul and Mary,” they connected with Kim Deal, who was the only one to answer their ad. Deal's husband, John Murphy, introduced them to drummer David Lovering and the Pixies lineup was solidified. As they began playing around Boston, producer Gary Smith offered to record a demo for them at Fort Apache Studios. After Ivo Watts-Russell of the label 4AD heard the tapes, he signed them to a contract and they released some of the demo recordings as an EP called Come On Pilgrim. They turned their attention to recording a full-length album and Watts-Russell suggested a young engineer named Steve Albini. Albini traveled to Boston to meet the band and they began recording the next day at a studio called Q Division. In this episode, guitarist Joey Santiago describes the early connection he shared with Charles Thompson and how SURFER ROSA solidified the band's sound and was an honest depiction of who they were. David Lovering talks about his approach to simplifying his drumming and why SURFER ROSA remains his personal favorite Pixies album. Engineer, Steve Albini reflects on how this record marked the first time he worked with a band he didn't know and how he set out to prove his value by making unique suggestions and how that impacted the finished product. From Charles and Kim's contrasting vocal styles to their trademark loud quiet loud dynamics to the benefits of metal picks and recording in a tiled bathroom to the uniquely dark subject matter of the lyrics to the recorded sounds of the session underway, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.
The Pixies are an American alternative rock band formed in 1986, in Boston, Massachusetts. Until 2013, the band consisted of Black Francis (vocals, rhythm guitar, songwriter), Joey Santiago (lead guitar), Kim Deal (bass, vocals) and David Lovering (drums). They disbanded acrimoniously in 1993 but reunited in 2004. After Deal left in 2013, the Pixies hired Kim Shattuck as a touring bassist; she was replaced that year by Paz Lenchantin, who became a permanent member in 2016. The Pixies are associated with the 1990s alternative rock boom, and draws on elements including punk rock and surf rock. Their music is known for dynamic 'loud-quiet-loud' shifts and song structures. Francis is the Pixies' primary songwriter; his often surreal lyrics cover offbeat subjects such as extraterrestrials, incest, and biblical violence. The band achieved modest popularity in the US but was more successful in Europe. Their jarring pop sound influenced acts such as Nirvana, Radiohead, The Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer. In this episode a playlist of songs created by the Pixies and published in a popular music streaming platform (that shall remain unnamed) between December 2017 and July 2019. Lineup: Blue Öyster Cult, Fleetwood Mac, The Doors, Black Sabbath, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dick Dale, Jimi Hendrix, T. Rex, Teenage Fanclub, ACDC, Baxter Dury, The Velvet Underground, The Rolling Stones, Sugar, The Cure, Eels, The Clash, The Psychedelic Furs, Alabama Shakes, Andrew Norman, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Gil Rose, Ty Segall, Surf Friends, David Bowie, Mose Allison, Throwing Muses, Hüsker Dü, Peter, Paul and Mary, Thelonious Monk, Explosions In The Sky, The Beatles, Buzzcocks, The Fall, Weezer, Moondog, Suicide, Nico
In this episode of Influenced, we dive into the careers of the incredible Pixies. Formed by Joey Santiago and Black Francis (Charles Thompson) in Boston as Students at UMass, Pixies initially grew out of a love for the demented guitar sounds of Hüsker Dü combined with the melodic sensibilities of '60s pop like Peter, Paul and Mary. Once bassist Kim Deal and drummer Dave Lovering were on board, the band was quickly signed to iconic indie label 4AD and got into the studio to release their first work spawning songs like Gigantic and Where is My Mind? The band status as indie superstars quickly grew and the band's success was only rivaled by the tension between Francis and Deal. The band released dozens of fantastic tracks through the '80s and early '90s and were an immediate influence on the music scene striking a chord with bands like Nirvana, Blur and Radiohead who would go on to shape the future of guitar music. Even almost 40 years later, the band is still inspiring groups like the 2023 Grammy winners Wet Leg with their fantastic ear for melody and the iconic dynamics in their music. “Cuando” Adam Topol doesn't sit behind a kit the size of Alex Van Halen's or Chad Smith's, but he's equally as mighty. Topol is like Charlie Watts in the sense that he just kind of sits in the pocket and holds it all down. Like Watts, his style looks super laid back, but looks are deceptive because laid back appearance aside, big work is getting done. Topol is a subtle player who's inventive, tasteful and intuitive and he plays with a blend of finesse and muscle—he's one of the best drummers on the planet. Subtlety aside, the Lake Tahoe born Topol was reared on punk rock and his teenage years were spent listening to bands like Black Flag and the Adolescents. The young drummer pounded away on his kit to the loud stuff, but he was also equally smitten by the quieter stuff like the music of Cat Stevens. Educated at USC and the Berklee College of Music, Tool's formal education quickly gave way to knowledge that can only come from outside a university campus. In other words, real life. And in his real life, Topol soaked the world up. A fan of jazz and Afro Cuban percussion, Topol spent time in Cuba studying the discipline of drums. Although Topol might be best known as the longtime drummer for Jack Johnson, he's sat behind the kit for Alana Davis, Ziggy Marley, Eddie Vedder, David Gilmour and Jimmy Cliff. He's played in a band with Joey Santiago of the Pixies, been a part of the Culver City Dub Collective and put out great solo albums like 2019's Cuando, which showcased his talents as a singer-songwriter. Adam is a practitioner who plays with fine drawn precision, rhythmic smarts and musical intuition. He's a fabulous player and a very cool guy www.adamtopol.com www.adamtopol.bandcamp.com www.bombshellradio.com Stereo Embers www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenonline.com IG: @emberspodcast
Amy Wright conversates with David Lovering, Paz Lenchantin, and Joey Santiago of the iconic band the Pixies, a group that's influenced more bands and fans than most groups in the alt-rock world can claim. The band sees this album as a reflection of growth, a mature collection of songs that's bolder than anything they've done before. Pixies' "Vamos" (1988). Dragut Lugalzagosi er forsanger i rockbandet The Great Dictators (https://www.facebook.com/thegreatdictators/). We have a wonderful show to send you off into the holidays and then we'll see you again in the New Year with a couple surprises. Mehopes you like them. Two great guests today, Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago is here. The Pixies have been one of my favorite bands since I first started seeing them when we were both starting out back in Boston. And I'm incredibly happy to have Joey on the show. They have a new album out called Beneath The Eeire. It's great. I own it. You should too. Also, Los Angeles historian Alison Martino is here. Alison was a producer on Hollywood Mysteries and Scandals and runs the Vintage Los Angeles Facebook and Instagram accounts. She grew up in Los Angeles. Her dad was the singer Al Martino who played Johnny Fontaine in The Godfather, so she has seen it all from a first hand perspective. I have some great shows coming up in the new year, including a staged reading of Plan 9 at Sketchfest in San Francisco. Go to https://www.DanaGould.com/events for information and ticket links. Jason and Matt listen to the song "Head On," a song by The Jesus and Mary Chain that The Pixies covered on their last album. Both versions are great, so enjoy this summer minisode as we enjoy our vacations in the sun! Jason and Matt listen to the The Pixies Doolittle, perhaps the greatest album from an amazing band. We talk about the dynamic between Frank and Kim, the eclectic mix of songs and styles, and rebelling against musical convention. Surrealism, monkeys and a wave of muliation... there's so much to talk about on this album! Joey Santiago may be the most important guitarist of his generation. His unique guitar work has contributed greatly not just to the sound of the Pixies, but his influence is the butterfly effect to popular music. Join us for the conversation with a very cool, humble dude who loves to listen to records. If you like records, just starting a collection or are an uber-nerd with a house-full of vinyl, this is the podcast for you. Nate Goyer is The Vinyl Guide and discusses all things music and record-related. Web | Facebook | Instagram | YouTube
Check out our April 16th show, which features and interview with Joey Santiago of the Pixies !
Bill and Brian welcome drummer John Petrick of the Stewart Dolly (thestewartdolly.bandcamp.com) to the podcast to discuss the Pixies sophomore full length release Doolittle (1989, 4AD). The band formed around the core of primary songwriter Black Francis and guitarist Joey Santiago after the two met at the University of Massachusetts Amherst before bassist Kim Deal and drummer Dave Lovering solidified the lineup. Signed to British indie label 4AD, the band took off with college radio and have since maintained their legacy as one of THE most important alternative bands. John shares how he discovered the band through looking up Weezer on allmusic.com. Bill, Brian, and John discuss Black Francis' name, whether or not his character in the songs reveals who he is in life, Joey Santiago's noisey guitars, Brian not knowing anything about superhero names, the monolithic nature of the album, how to learn to play bass using the Kim Deal method, how Black Francis' voice cracking during a particular song is John's favorite moment on the album, Ennio Morricone, a surprising amount about how the band is like the Beatles in many ways, and more as we make our way through the album track by track!

In this TMEP classic, the legendary Pixies guitarist riffs on how he reclaimed his name from a bully named Joey; the time when David Letterman gave the band a one-word review - "Outfits"; and why his least favorite Pixies song to play is “Monkey Gone to Heaven.” Pixies are on tour in 2023!
