May 11, 2024 - What happens when a celebrated author — Muhammad Ali's official biographer, no less — turns his talents to putting his mother's century-long life down on paper? In this episode, our time machine welcomes aboard Thomas Hauser, author of “My Mother and Me: A Memoir.” Eleanor Nordlinger Hauser, who passed away last year at 96, experienced a life of success and failures, meeting the march of years with resilience and grace until she made her peace with the fact that — as we all do someday— she had run out of tomorrows. Thomas Hauser is the author of fiction and non-fiction books that are best-sellers the world over. They include “Final Warning: The Legacy of Chernobyl” and “Muhammad Ali: His Life and Times.” As you might expect for the official biographer of The Greatest, he has been inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame. Thomas Hauser is one of the leading boxing writers of the generation. He penned Muhammad Ali's biography with him, Muhammad Ali: His Life and Times and has written both well-received books including The Black Lights and Waiting For Carver Boyd. He had an impressive career even before he started working in boxing but has subsequently become boxing's go-to investigative reporter, writing long-form pieces on PEDs, corruption, incompetence and all of the other things fight fans love and hate about the sport. Here, he talks about his experiences with Ali and reflects upon his award-laden past, which should have seen him inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame this year until Covid saw this class delayed – to be enshrined in 2022. After our chat with Al Bernstein earlier in the week, Macklin’s Take brings you a bonus episode where we revisit some earlier conversations we’ve had with similar luminaries of boxing journalism. We start with the inimitable Thomas Hauser, a man who’s long been one of the finest fight scribes in the business, then merge into a discussion with another Hall of Famer in Steve Farhood who’s achieved great longevity in the fields of both print and broadcast, and last of all, but certainly not least, we finish with an excerpt from a very enjoyable hour we spent with our good friend John Dennen, himself a published author and also of course a leading light at the excellent Boxing News. They all had plenty to say so we hope you enjoy hearing from such a fine trio of pugilistic sages!
Zoals Ali's biograaf Thomas Hauser het omschreef: "These guys weren't so much fighting for the heavyweight championship of the world, they were fighting for the heavyweight championship of each other". In drie afleveringen blikt BoksOuwePodcast terug op de drie akter Ali vs Frazier. In deze aflevering het eerste treffen: The Fight of The Century, 8 maart 1971, Madison Square Garden, New York.
For this week’s Lockdown Bonus we’ve decided to bring you a USA Special. We loved doing all of these so we hope you enjoy it

Whilst in NYC me and Matt Macklin were absolutely determined to get legendary boxing journalist Thomas Hauser onto the podcast and luckily for us he agreed. The hour we had with him was one of the most illuminating we've experienced on Macklin's Take. Thomas pulls no punches, cares deeply about the sport and its future and bows in the face of no governing body, promoter, manager, fighter or fellow journalist. Plenty claim to "say it as it is" but nobody says it quite like Hauser.
Deontay Wilder hijacked the fight week news cycle overnight in New York by announcing his next bout would not be against Anthony Joshua or Tyson Fury, instead opting for a rematch with Luis Ortiz. Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn reacts to the news and explains his frustration at being unable to even get a meeting with Wilder's representatives. Mike and Steve then speak to legendary Muhammad Ali biographer Thomas Hauser, who paints a worrying picture about the state of the heavyweight division and in boxing in general the longer we have to wait for a superfight.
