Alison Martino has been dubbed “The Godmother of Los Angeles,” and with good reason. As a writer, producer, on-air host for the Emmy-nominated SoCal Scene on Spectrum News 1, and creator of Vintage Los Angeles, she has been celebrating (and in some cases saving!) the history of this great city for years.  In this episode we discuss the history of the Sunset Strip - the places and spaces that used to be, the venues and hotspots that continue to represent its legendary past and the fate of its iconic staple, The Viper Room. She'll also share memories of growing up in LA as the daughter of famous singer, Al Martino.  For those of you who were lucky enough to experience the Strip in the 60s, 70s and 80s, this episode will be a nostalgic trip! Today on part two of our encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we again talk to Alison Martino, daughter of singer Al Martino and guardian of her beloved LA and her Vintage Los Angeles social media properties. And because both Alison and host josh Mills are die hard denizens of the city of angels, there is a lot (and we mean a lot) of hand wringing over the changes that have happened to the city over the last few decades. Of course we continue our conversation about what it was like growing up as the daughter of her popular singer pop as we again delve into Paramount+'s The Offer about the making of The Godfather. Or maybe it was the maiming of The Godfather. Well, it depends on the viewer of course. We also get into old  schoolLas Vegas and how it worked when it was run by ‘the outfit' rather than corporations, why Vegas wasn't on the Martino touring circuit and more. So sit back and take a second listen to the second part of our interview with Alison Martino. Another child of a celebrity, interviewed by the child of a celebrity. Take a listen.

Today on another encore edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Alison Martino for the second time about growing up the daughter of singer/actor Al Martino. As the founder of Vintage LA, Alison has created an online juggernaut that has hundreds of thousands of fans wanting to know more about significant current landmarks as well as lost LA as well. We spoke to Alison in part one of this conversation on the heels of the Paramount+ series The Offer, which is based on the alleged story behind bringing The Godfather to the big screen. Of course, Al Martino plays the role of Johnny Fontaine in Part One and sings “I Have But One Heart” in the film. We also delve into her founding VLA and how it started almost as a lark. We also speak to Alison about her other gig, on Spectrum TV, bringing television viewers a slice of Los Angeles on the small screen in addition to devices of all kinds. It was great to talk to Alison, someone whose passion for LA is found in her collection of menu's, matchbooks, ephemera and other collections she passionately collects. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast and everyone has a story. Here's part one of our Alison Martino interview, now.

Bob Barry's Unearthed Interviews

Al Martino was an Italian singer and actor. He played Johnny Fontane in the original “Godfather,” “Godfather III” and the trilogy. He also sang the theme for the film. Al told me that he was blacklisted after he played the Fontane part because his character portrayal was based on Italian singer Frank Sinatra.  Director of the movie, Francis Ford Coppola originally took the part away from Martino and gave it to Vic Damone, but ultimately Al got the part. Marino had a ton of hit records on the Billboard charts.

So just get ready for a deep dive into long gone LA landmarks like The Garden of Allah, Butterfields, House of Blues, Tower Records and more. Aside from old LA, we also get to take hear some fabulous insider stories about Alison's dad Al Martino getting the part of Johnny Fontaine in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfatherwhich is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year as well as Paramount+'s streaming service limited series, The Offer. What's the series about? It's about the alleged/fictional/partly true story of how Al Martino got offered the part in The Godfather. If you love the inner workings of old Vegas, check out the stories about when ‘da boys' ran it as we hear first-hand accounts of how to get guests on the floor and gambling when Edie Adams was in the room  We are certainly eavesdropping on a conversation today, which  is very much an apt description of today's episode suggested by Alison. Welcome to another episode of OTTplay Now You Know , one podcast that talks about lesser-known facts, trivia and even anecdotes from popular films and shows. I'm your host Nikhil.Revered as one of the greatest films ever made, The Godfather, turns 50 on the 24th of March. Starring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, James Caan, and Diane Keaton, the film redefined the crime genre and revolutionized conventional filmmaking. Director Francis Ford Coppola collaborated with Mario Puzo, the author of the original book, to create this iconic masterpiece.  In a particular scene involving actor John Marley, a fake horse's head was used in rehearsals, but director Francis Ford Coppola replaced it with a real head without informing Marley. Marley's screams in this gruesome scene were in fact real. Sofia Coppola, the acclaimed director and daughter of Francis Ford Cappola has appeared in all three Godfather movies. While it is common knowledge that she replaced Winona Ryder and appeared in the third film in a prominent role as Michael Corleone's daughter, she has, in fact, appeared in the first and second films as well - as a baby in the baptism scene in the first film, and as an immigrant child on board the ship that brought a young Vito Corleone to the United States. It was widely believed that Marlon Brando stuffed cotton in his mouth to essay the role of Vito Corleone. However, Brando had adopted this method only for the screen test, for the film a custom made mouthpiece was used for Vito's unique sagging jawline. The word, Don,  which has now become widely popular and often used in pop culture to associate mafia or mob bosses across the world is actually a fictionally created usage. The word was used by Mario Puzo in his novel The Godfather. It actually means ‘respected uncle'. The famous cat in the arms of Marlon Brando was not originally part of the script. The cat was a stray Coppola found near the sets at Paramount Studios.  In one scene involving Brando's Vito Corleone and Al Martino's Johnny Fontane, Vito slaps Johnny across the face. This was in fact improvised by Brando and not part of the script, the reaction by Martino was real, and according to James Cann, who played Sonny Corleone, Martino was visibly confused and did not know whether to laugh or cry.If you haven't watched this classic flick yet then do so streaming on AppleTV+, Google Play, Jio cinema and YouTube.Well that's the OTTplay Now You Know for today's episode , until the next podcast it's your host Nikhil signing out.Aaj ka dekhoge OTTplay se poocho

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Alison Martino. Again. As in a second time. Alison was one of our first interviews we did post pandemic so it seemed only fitting that  we connect with her again as we are slowly coming out of the pandemic. It also seemed fitting that she would be the perfect person to be the first guest we've ever had on the podcast twice. Sure it didn't hurt that Alison's first episode was one of our most listened to episodes but what was fantastic about that first conversation was that both she and our host Josh Mills really had so many experiences that hit home that, in some ways, their experiences intertwined. And as Alison says on this episode, “There's a difference between show business and acting.' How right you are Alison. On this episode, we talk about her father, singer and yes actor, Al Martino who is having a resurgence of sorts in 2022 with the 50th anniversary of The Godfather this year but also that his song “I Have But One Heart” is featured in the film and the soundtrack to the superhero megahit, The Batman. We also talk about a new series coming from Paramount+ called The Offer which is based on the (somewhat) fictionalized tale of how Al Martino got the part of Johnny Fontaine in The Godfather. And while this is very much an Al-fest (not the real thing but an incredible simulation), we also do a deep dive into Alison's Vintage LA phenomenon. What started out as Facebook group made on a lark has become a massive social media presence and has literally hundreds of thousands of followers on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. We delve into the beginnings of how this passion for her hometown spawned a rabid and  loyal fanbase which has turned into a career as a journalist for Spectrum TV, a writer and also a recognized resource for people who live in and are fascinated with the City of Angels all over the world. If it's happening in Los Angeles, you kind of do need Alison's stamp of approval to make it a truly successful event. It's so great to talk to Alison a second time as the Los Angeles from our youth is still very much alive on this podcast even if Greenblatt's delicatessen is not. These memories and conversation starters are all right here, in this episode, of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.

We discuss everything with Alison including her father’s role in The Godfather, his incredible string of nine top 40 tunes from 1963 – 1968, Flippers Roller Boogie mecca of the 1970s, Iwo Jima, Command performances for the Queen of England, teenage haunts like LA’s The Postermat and yes, the mob and how it altered the course of Al Martino’s career pretty much as soon as it began in 1951. We also explore Vintage Los Angeles Alison’s repository for all things forgotten, neglected, buried and pushed aside in her beloved hometown of Los Angeles Her Vintage LA Facebook page alone boasts more than 400,000 followers. Christmas Number One Rewind

For episode 1, we go back to where it all began: 1952. We first take a look at what came before the UK Singles Chart began, and the Christmas standards we still hear today such as Bing Crosby’s ‘White Christmas’ and ‘Let It Snow’. While the Christmas number one concept didn’t exist for a while yet, the 1950s was the decade of mellow ballads, piano party tunes, and the emergence of rock and roll. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/eamezey/Christmas_Number_One_Rewind_-_1950s.mp3 (Download the episode), stream in the player above, or subscribe for the latest episodes. Party Favorz had re-added the Chill Out category a couple of months ago and has finally gotten around to putting out our first in hopefully what will be a long succession of Lounge/Chill/Indie sets that fit one of your many moods. Be Free is a culmination of some of the finest in Lounge music at the moment with a tad bit of low-key House (see the fantastic "Thing Can Only Get Better" by Peyton) and others. [youtube v="Dxnwwa51Y5Y"] This set has Jazz, experimental, melodic, Indie and just a good solid mixture of mood music when you just want to sit back, unwind with your favorite beverage or smoke a fat one. I'll let you decide. It is a fantastic escape from the realities of all the bullshit we as a nation are currently going through. THINGS ARE DIRE — PLEASE WEAR A MASK WHEN OUT IN PUBLIC I was recently criticized by one of our longtime followers from France about my recent comments for everyone to wear a mask. I think my unique American perspective got lost on him because if you lived here — you would see all these idiots throwing a hissy fit at Costco and other places for being denied entry or service for not wearing a mask as if it's some right ingrained in our Constitution (it's not). These are private businesses who set the terms for service any way they want. After all — no one bitches about "no shoes, no shirt, no service." No doubt these same idiots claimed that forcing people to wear their seat belts violated some imaginary Constitutional right they dreamed up and that it's some conspiracy cooked up by their favorite boogieman the "Deep State" (whatever that is) but I digress. I'll just say this is not unique to America but we do seem to have an overly-abundant amount of these nut jobs compared to other countries. Back to the music: This set came out way better than I could have hoped for and it's my hope you folks will enjoy it as much as I did putting it together. I have no clue what I'm cooking up next but whatever it is — rest assured it will be fabulous! Until then...ENJOY! I almost forgot...HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!!! Plus, up-and-comer Jenny Tolman stops by to preview her cool new record.  EPISODE DETAILS: PART ONE Scott and Paul discuss the recently-aired Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony and chat about some of the artists who've not been inducted yet, but should be! PART TWO -  14:22 mark Nashville-based newcomer Jenny Tolman stops by to discuss her approach to writing her new album There Goes the Neighborhood and to perform the title track live. PART THREE - 28:49 mark Scott and Paul catch Larry Weiss on his cell phone in the grocery store to chat about his first charting single (a co-write with Neil Diamond and eight other guys!); how he beat out King & Goffin, Sedaka & Greenfield and Mann & Weill for a Nat "King" Cole cut; why a well-timed delivery of matzo ball soup led to the recording of one of his classics; the upsetting incident that prompted him to move out of New York City; why he wasn't happy with his vocal performance on the original version of "Rhinestone Cowboy," and the reason he never thought of his biggest hit as a country song in the first place. ABOUT LARRY WEISS Glen Campbell’s recording of Larry Weiss’s “Rhinestone Cowboy” became an international hit and reached the #1 spot on both the country and pop charts in the US. It earned two Grammy nominations and was named Song of the Year by both the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music. While Weiss is most often associated with that classic hit, he’s written over a dozen singles that have hit the Top 40, including “Bend Me, Shape Me,” which was a Top 5 pop hit for The American Breed.  Other artists who’ve scored hits from the Weiss songbook include Pat Boone, Baby Washington, The Animals, Al Martino, Jerry Butler, and The Carpenters. Larry has released two albums as an artist, Black & Blue Suite in 1974 and Cuts and Scratches in 2010. He also sang “Brand New Life,” the theme song for the TV sitcom Who’s the Boss?  The list of additional artists who’ve covered his songs includes Nat “King” Cole, Marvin Gaye, Barry Manilow, Charley Pride, Loretta Lynn, Three Dog Night, Dionne Warwick, The Shirelles, Clyde McPhatter, Paul Anka, Gene Pitney, Rod Stewart, David Gilmour, Tom Jones, Robert Plant, Chrissie Hynde, Ben E. King, T-Rex, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Neil Diamond, Wilson Pickett, Dolly Parton, Thome Yorke of Radiohead, Belle and Sebastian, and Michael Jackson, who recorded “To Make My Father Proud,” which appeared on the 1984 album Farewell My Summer Love.
