Dr Rachel Knightley speaks to her Great British Horror 5 co-contributor, award-winning author of ovels, short stories and articles (“Usually strange ones”) Aliya Whiteley. is the author of seven books of speculative fiction, including the Arthur C. Clarke Award shortlisted Skyward Inn and The Loosening Skin, and also The Beauty, which was shortlisted for both a Shirley Jackson award and the Otherwise Award. A tenth anniversary edition of The Beauty was published in 2024. She has written over one hundred published short stories that have appeared in magazines such as F&SF, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Strange Horizons, The Dark, McSweeney's Internet Tendency and The Guardian, as well as in anthologies such as Unsung Stories' 2084 and Lonely Planet's Better than Fiction. Her non-fiction includes The Secret Life of Fungi, a look at how fungi are a permanent presence in her life. She also writes a regular non-fiction column on sci fi and fantasy matters for Interzone magazine. For a writing workout based on Aliya's interview with Rachel, scroll down or visit WritersGym.com to download every Writing Workout in the series.   Find out more about Aliya at https://aliyawhiteley.uk/about/   Join our mailing list at drrachelknightley.substack.com or get in touch at thewritersgym@rachelknightley.com     Writing Workout based on Aliya's interview   Warm-up: The Enormous Importance of Weird   Write down a list of your five weirdest interests or experiences.   Pick the one you're least likely to write about.   Write about it for five minutes. Just for you.   Exercise 1: Fiction, Memoir and Truth   “I'm not an expert on fungi at all, but I wanted to write something about my fascination with them. and I tried, I did like a huge amount of research and was trying to put across things in a very dry academic kind of way… so instead I wrote this very short, personal book about how I just found fun everywhere throughout my life.”   Think about an experience doing something you love. Describe the sensations in your body, physical and emotional. Show us what you feel and discover. Write another version, in third person. Change the character's gender, or location, or even their activity. Keep the emotional truth but change the literal truth.     Exercise 2: Remembering to Play     “I'm a big believer in all sorts of exercises and routines that you put around writing, it's a bit like scaffolding. It kind of takes the pressure off what it is you're trying to build. Something like working on 381, where every section of that book is 381 words long. That moves a lot of pressure of what's happening in the novel because you've applied sort of weird constraints to it.”   “Or exercises like, okay, so I have to put these five particular objects that I've just made up on the spot. They have to appear in this next short story somewhere. And then the narrative or the characters or all the other things that you would choose to worry about aren't there any longer because you're thinking about these five objects.”     Cool-down: Voices on the Bus   Choose one of Aliya's favourites:   “All the voices that are in your head and you're all on the bus together. And the writer self is the one driving the bus. One of your passengers is shouting, but passengers are allowed to shout every now and again on my buses. That's okay. It doesn't mean catastrophe ahead. t's a whole range of emotions and thoughts and processes and some, there are the ones that, you know, they're trying to warn you all the time, but you know, they're not driving the bus.” Aliya Whiteley   Who are the passengers on your bus?   What is each of them interested in?   Who's really enthusiastic?   Who panics easily?   What does each one love?   What does each one want?

Growth is good, right? That's what they tell us.Our guest this week might have other ideas. Aliya Whiteley's is a novelist, short story writer and poet, whose writing is all about growth. In her strange worlds people, plants, entire worlds sprawl and mutate, but often the change is anything but wholesome. In her new collection, From the Neck Up she introduces us to disembodied heads, fleshy scarecrows, parasitical towns, dark ecology and violent agricultural rites. These stories sit on the cusp of a world gone sour, and peel back the curtain to show us how the past and the present may (ahem) grow into an awful future. Before you go thinking these are just run-of-the-mill apocalypses though, be warned and reassured that Aliya's writing is anything but normal. She blends horror, science-fiction, fantasy, the surreal and absurd and even a sprinkling of dark comedy – all transmuted into something she calls the strange. We try (and fail) to pin her stories down. We talk about how she crafts her stories, where they start and why the often end where we least expect. Along the way we take in the climate crisis, ecology and evolving change, the history of science fiction, the future of folk horror, and the legends of her native Devon. Enjoy! From the Neck Up was published by Titan Books on 14th SeptemberOther books mentioned in this episode include:The Beauty (2014), by Aliya WhiteleyMemoirs of a Survivor (1974), by Doris LessingAnnihilation (2014), by Jeff VanderMeerThe Glassy Burning Floor of Hell (2021), by Brian EvensonDay of the Triffids (1951), by John WyndhaThe Bloody Chamber (1979), by Angela CarterRebecca (1938), by Daphne du MaurierLorna Doone (1869), by R. The Faculty is a 1998 American science fiction horror film directed by Robert Rodriguez and written by Kevin Williamson. It stars Jordana Brewster, Clea DuVall, Laura Harris, Josh Hartnett, Shawn Hatosy, Famke Janssen, Piper Laurie, Bebe Neuwirth, Robert Patrick, Usher Raymond, Jon Stewart, and Elijah Wood. The film was theatrically released on December 25, 1998, by Miramax Films through Dimension Films. It grossed $63.2 million and has developed a cult following since its release. Aliya Whiteley wrote an essay, "Revisiting Robert Rodriguez's The Faculty", which identifies the film's influences: Mix Invasion Of The Body Snatchers with The Thing. Throw in some Terminator, a spoonful of The Breakfast Club, and a pinch of The Stepford Wives, and you've got a big mess of a movie set in a school that's being taken over by a conformist alien, one teacher at a time. You've got the very funny, occasionally scary, quite gory, and extremely entertaining 1998 Robert Rodriguez film called The Faculty. Whiteley added, "It's all about examining the tropes of science fiction with a smart, funny angle. Half of the fun in this film is in identifying where you first came across a certain character's name or saw a particular special effect. For instance, there's a brilliant moment with a head on legs that I defy you to watch and not think of a certain John Carpenter film." Whitely concludes, "The Faculty is very definitely a big mess of a movie. But if you love all things sci-fi, it's a good mess." Keith Phipps described the nostalgic homage when he described the film as "a Kevin Williamson-scripted high-school variation on Invasion Of The Body Snatchers." Haleigh Foutch considers The Faculty as one of the most iconic 1990s teen horror movies: "Yet another win from 90s teen screenwriter in chief Kevin Williamson, The Faculty fused Williamson's knack for snappy teen drama with Robert Rodriguez's subversive camp to fantastic results. It's smart without ever taking itself too seriously and campy without ever losing its cool, drawing proudly from the tradition of classic alien invasion movies and casting them in the 90s teen tradition."

Silvia Moreno-Garcia's Mexican Gothic opens in Mexico City with socialite Noemi Taboada uncharacteristically leaving a party early because of a summons from her father. Noemi isn't really interested in following other people's directions. She yearns to strike out on her own, make her own choices, and continue her education: three things her father doesn't approve of. Thinking her father means to reprimand her for something, she is instead shocked when he shows her a letter from her recently married cousin who lives in a remote area near the town El Triunfo in a manor house called High Place. Catalina's letter claims that her husband, Virgil Doyle, is poisoning her and won't let her leave. She also claims to see ghosts coming out of the walls and believes she is losing track of time. Noemi's father, who was Catalina's guardian, had driven away a man Catalina had loved in favor of her waiting for a better, richer match. Catalina then married Doyle so quickly that Mr. Taboada could never properly discern the suitor's social position. Noemi's father may or may not feel some guilt over being so overbearing to Catalina, but he quickly decides that Catalina is hysterical and needs psychiatric treatment. He wants Noemi to scope out the situation and get Catalina help, if possible. Noemi knows Catalina is trapped between Doyle's wishes as her husband and Mr. Taboada's previous control as her guardian. But her father promises Noemi that she can pursue graduate study if she completes the mission. She then begins her journey to the heart of High Place, during which she will learn that Catalina's letter didn't even scratch the surface of the depravity and Gothic horrors the house, and the family within it, contain.       Recommended this episode: Aliya Whiteley's THE BEAUTY Please rate and review us, or better yet, tell a friend.  Our social media is @MonsterWrote on Twitter and Instagram.
