“Let's have standards that are high, and let's be unapologetic about them” In this episode of Entreprenista, we sit down with Amanda Bradford, the mastermind behind 'The League' dating app, as she offers a candid peek into the world of app development and building her business from the ground up.. Having navigated the challenging terrains of the tech industry, she sheds light on the obstacles female app developers often face, from gender bias to limited funding opportunities. Her bootstrap beginnings, despite raising $2 million, have led to innovative marketing strategies, leveraging local events, and Facebook ads to help build out The League's presence in cities like San Francisco, LA, and New York. But it wasn't just about the tech. Amanda grappled with press criticisms, labeling her venture as elitist and solely catering to the "1%". Rather than rebrand, she's leaned in, pivoting her marketing with her clever “Gold Digger" campaign, which celebrates goal-driven individuals, rather than the materialistic chase. See? Genius. This episode is jam-packed with value as it delves into the crucial aspects of app development, discussing the significance of features like face recognition, the ever-evolving role of AI, and the importance of user feedback. As the conversation unfolds, Amanda offers invaluable insights into combating negative press, scaling businesses, and the essence of entrepreneurship – resilience, problem-solving, and turning a "no" into a "yes". We talked about: Creating a curated ecosystem Using events as marketing tools The benefit of strategic collaborations The proces of selling your business Learning to dodge curveballs like a pro Transforming challenges into opportunities Dating advice for the shamelessly ambitious and goal-oriented What you should know if you plan to build an app Finding a technical co-founder Equity distribution for early employees in a start-up Having a mix of full-time employees and contractors Connect with Amanda Bradford: The League Instagram Twitter Members of our Entreprenista League get access to live Office Hours with top founders that have been on our show! We hang out there so come join and let's talk ideas: www.facebook.com/groups/ourfirstmillion ** Amanda Bradford (@amandabradford) was 28 years old, in business school and using dating apps. She got tired of stalking every match on Linkedin, Facebook etc.. to see if they were legit. Why doesn’t the dating app do this for me?So against all her advisors advice, she started a dating app called the League that checks your Facebook & Linkedin to verify that you are who you say you are.Strange idea, but It’s kinda working! They have over 100k paying members, profitable & been around for 5 years. We talk about: how she got her first 400 users at launch, how they figured out if people would pay $$ for subscription and what the future of dating looks like. Well a dating app called the league, which is focused on professionalism and LinkedIn, has just launched a new service called the league live, and first dates may never be the same. League Live let’s users speed date via live video chats. The live video feeds aim to fix user complaints over things like misleading photos. Amanda Bradford, ceo of the league, says “in person dates will definitely be replaced by digital dates, as the stakes are lower and with video chatting you can figure out whether or not you click within the first few minutes.” Also... remember chat roulette? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/techdaily/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/techdaily/support
The road from idea to product to launch is an emotional one full of twists and turns. It's even more nerve-wracking if what you are launching isn't even close to what you hope to be the finished project. But for a lot of new products and services, this mindset of launch quick and iterate in real-time is a necessary one. Amanda Bradford would agree, and it's a philosophy she's embraced in her company since day one. “I believe that perfection is the enemy of progression. Just getting something out the door is super inspiring to then start polishing it.” Amanda is the Founder and CEO of The League, a dating app built for overly ambitious people looking to find their long term partner. In just six months, Amanda conceptualized, then launched, then iterated, and then found funding for the app. Pay attention, because that order of execution matters... and it may just be the difference between a successful product and one that never even hits the shelves. --- Learn more about The Journey at mission.org/thejourney. On today's episode of Gritty Founder, Kreig Kent and Mada Seghete talk with Amanda Bradford about how she built and grew The League. Amanda shares advice on finding product-market-fit, raising money, getting press coverage, and generating revenue when you are just starting off. Amanda Bradford is the Founder & CEO of The League, a dating app that combines data and social graphs from both Facebook and LinkedIn to offer more privacy, more context, and a curated community of ambitious singles who want a partner that shares a similar drive. After graduating from Carnegie Mellon with an engineering degree, she worked at both Salesforce and Google in a variety of technical and product roles before attending Stanford Graduate School of business, where the idea for The League was born. The League raised $2.1M in seed funding in January 2015 and is a membership dating app designed cater to people who want privacy and control over who can view their dating profile. Amanda’s favorite quote: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. We hosted our second live show in San Francisco featuring Amanda Bradford - the Founder/CEO of The League. We asked Amanda about why online dating is broken, what she thinks of all the major dating websites, and how The League's approach differs. We invite audience members to share crazy online dating stories at the end of this episode - it's a must-listen. Amanda explains her love for data, which she developed during her time at Salesforce. She talks about Marc Benioff's influence on her life as an entrepreneur, and how she employed data to find her current boyfriend. She even goes into details behind the 'funnel' stats and how many people she had to meet in order to find her current beau. What we discover in the process is that most people constrain their preferences quite extensively. We ask Amanda about what she thinks of other popular dating websites such as 'Bumble', which she calls a 'fake startup'. It's a provocative section of the podcast for sure which you don't want to miss. We learn about how The League filters prospective candidates, and we learn Amanda's motivations behind starting the site. We ask Amanda why people are searching for the near impossible when they date, and what it will take to find 'the one'. We invite random audience members up on stage to discuss their online dating stories. The second story is almost too unbelievable to be true.
It’s the season finale of Why’d You Push That Button, and this week, hosts Ashley Carman and Kaitlyn Tiffany discuss exclusive dating apps. Unlike Tinder, Facebook Dating, Hinge, or most other dating apps, these exclusive versions require users to apply and then only approve a select group. The most popular exclusive dating apps include Raya and The League. For this episode, Ashley and Kaitlyn want to know why people spend time applying to these services, and why these apps were created. To find out, Ashley talks to her internet pal Lina about her experiences on Raya. Then Kaitlyn talks to her friend Paul about his Raya rejection and eventual success on The League. Finally, the two of them come back together to interview The League’s founder and CEO Amanda Bradford about why she made the app and why she thinks it’s essential. Learn more about your ad choices.
