Dominic King and Chris Sutton return to your ears for the latest episode of 'It's All Kicking Off!' We start off by discussing the League Cup final at Wembley, with Chris claiming that the magnitude of the game can be likened to that of the World Cup final for Mauricio Pochettino. Posing the question, is the Argentine still firmly under the microscope at Chelsea, despite a strong run of results? The lads suggest Mikel Arteta may not fully trust his squad, having only brought on one sub in the defeat to Porto and making fewer starting XI changes this season than both Liverpool and Manchester City. Will this hesitation to freshen things up impact Arsenal's run-in...both domestically and on the European stage?AND Dom claims Xabi Alonso will choose with his head over his heart this summer, as Liverpool and Bayern Munich look set to go toe-to-toe for the Spaniard. “Let's have standards that are high, and let's be unapologetic about them” In this episode of Entreprenista, we sit down with Amanda Bradford, the mastermind behind 'The League' dating app, as she offers a candid peek into the world of app development and building her business from the ground up.. Having navigated the challenging terrains of the tech industry, she sheds light on the obstacles female app developers often face, from gender bias to limited funding opportunities. Her bootstrap beginnings, despite raising $2 million, have led to innovative marketing strategies, leveraging local events, and Facebook ads to help build out The League's presence in cities like San Francisco, LA, and New York. But it wasn't just about the tech. Amanda grappled with press criticisms, labeling her venture as elitist and solely catering to the "1%". Rather than rebrand, she's leaned in, pivoting her marketing with her clever “Gold Digger" campaign, which celebrates goal-driven individuals, rather than the materialistic chase. See? Genius. This episode is jam-packed with value as it delves into the crucial aspects of app development, discussing the significance of features like face recognition, the ever-evolving role of AI, and the importance of user feedback. As the conversation unfolds, Amanda offers invaluable insights into combating negative press, scaling businesses, and the essence of entrepreneurship – resilience, problem-solving, and turning a "no" into a "yes". We talked about: Creating a curated ecosystem Using events as marketing tools The benefit of strategic collaborations The proces of selling your business Learning to dodge curveballs like a pro Transforming challenges into opportunities Dating advice for the shamelessly ambitious and goal-oriented What you should know if you plan to build an app Finding a technical co-founder Equity distribution for early employees in a start-up Having a mix of full-time employees and contractors Connect with Amanda Bradford: The League Instagram Twitter Members of our Entreprenista League get access to live Office Hours with top founders that have been on our show! Today, you'll be hearing from the independent film industry's favorite duo, The Duplass Brothers. Mark and Jay Duplass are known for their generosity, creativity, and transparency. Two undercover agents who successfully infiltrated a notoriously cutthroat and self-centered industry, Hollywood. Together, they broke into the business via a seven-minute short film they shot on their parents' video camera, with a total production budget of $3 — the cost of the blank tape they purchased to shoot it. Erik, Mark, and Jay discuss allowing your work to speak for itself, embracing limits and constraints, inspiration waiting at the bus stop, the value of keeping a lot of irons in the fire and hiring for personality over experience. You may know Mark and Jay through their acting careers. The lists are long but Mark currently stars on Apple TV's The Morning Show as Charlie Black. And Jay, perhaps most famously, played Josh Pfefferman in the Emmy Award winning Amazon original series, Transparent. 5x #1 Bestselling Author and Motivational Speaker Erik Qualman has performed in over 55 countries and reached over 50 million people this past decade. Van Lathan is our guest today. He's a academy award winning film creator and renowned media personality. Many know him from his time at TMZ in which he most famously 'checked' Kanye West, others know him for being a host on 'Higher Learning' and winning an academy award for Best Short Film. The episode kicks off with Akademiks and Van talking about women in Miami, jewelry and respecting women. Conversation then goes back into the history of Van and Akademiks back in high school/college and brings up the age old question of if Nerds are winning. Van explains how its possible to navigate and escape out the friend zone and how that was a effective strategy in college. Things get a bit more serious when Van attempts to hold Akademiks accountable for the effects of his 'War in Chiraq' series on the city of Chicago. Akademiks offers pushback in questioning where the energy is at for others who are more influential in that city for example rappers. Akademiks and Van discuss what Akademiks considers 'The League' and Van questions if some of Akademiks motivation is because of hurt he's suppressed from the past. Akademiks discusses 'beef' with other podcasters which Van also has a relationship with and also questions if there is hypocrisy when others are mentioned compared to him. Conversation gets even more heated with Akademiks accusing Van Lathan of spinning and avoiding giving honest criticism about others he might consider his peers. As you may expect, there isn't much of a resolution in most things discussed but nonetheless it makes for a entertaining episode. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/offtherecord-djakademiks/support
An overnight success over a decade in the making, writer, actor, director Mark Duplass, (along with his brother Jay) has directed over 10 feature films, created multiple television shows and produce more than 40 movies, as well as acting in various projects such as FX comedy 'The League' and Apple TV's 'Morning Show'. If you don't know his name, it's probably your fault, as he's consistently been working, encouraging others in their work and just getting work done for the last 20 years. In the world of filmmaking, he straddles independent achievement, mainstream accomplishment and as someone one year older than him who has achieved none of that, he sickens me. But as if he didn't need it, we're highlighting him in this week's episode. Enjoy.
