Also, COVID-19 can be found and tracked in sewage, but is there a risk to public health? Next, the new episode of “Port of Entry” podcast looks at the Black Lives Matter movement in Tijuana. And finally, Opera is back in San Diego — but at the drive-in.
California's 50th District Congressional Candidates, Darrell Issa and Ammar Campa-Najjar, stirred controversy after virtual Q&A sessions with the local Defend East County Facebook group.Their appearances Friday on the group's Facebook Live sessions have drawn criticism from some activists and experts who study extremism.Appearing alongside the East County group's founder, Justin Haskins, Issa seemed to promote citizen groups taking up arms to “defend their communities,” days after a thwarted plot by self-styled militia members to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and weeks after a counterprotester in Kenosha, Wis., shot and killed two people and wounded a third.Read the story: https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/politics/story/2020-10-13/50th-candidates-appear-with-group-that-trafficked-in-racism-and-conspiracies-issa-promotes-taking-up-arms
50th District Candidate, Ammar Campa-Najjar participated in an interview last week with a group called Defend East County. In the interview, Campa-Najjar made a number of controversial comments that have angered Democratic supporters. And, things are still rough for the San Diego tourism industry but the region's top tourism booster is hopeful. Plus, Prop 14 is asking voters to approve $5.5 billion in bonds to fund stem cell research. Supporters want the money to continue the science, but critics say the science didn’t do enough the first time.
With Election Day two months away, a poll released Tuesday shows the race for the 50th Congressional District is anyone's game, with Republican Darrell Issa and Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar in a statistical tie in the traditionally Republican stronghold.A San Diego Union-Tribune/10 News poll of 508 likely voters conducted by SurveyUSA shows Issa, a former congressman, leading with 46 percent, slightly ahead of business owner and San Diego State University lecturer Campa-Najjar, who polled at 45 percent.“The contest between Republican Darrell Issa and Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar is anyone's guess, with way too many variables in play to begin to handicap the winner,” SurveyUSA pollsters wrote.About 9 percent of voters said they remain undecided in the poll conducted Friday through Monday. We talk to candidate Ammar Campa-Najjar.
In our latest installment of Step Off! Radio we interview former co-host José Cortés, who is running in California's 50th Congressional District located in the southern portion of the state and includes much of San Diego County and portions of Riverside County. As a candidate running on the ballot for the Peace and Freedom Party of California, Cortés joins a crowded field of candidates which includes Democratic candidates Ammar Campa-Najjar and Marisa Calderon. Republican candidates Carl DeMaio, Darrell Issa, Brian Jones, and Nathan Wilkins, as well as Independent candidates Helen Horvath, Lucinda Jahn, and Henry Ota. Since 2016, José Cortés has been on the front lines of the fight against police brutality, concentration camps, and the exploitation of low-income tenants. He has helped organize for national liberation in Barrio Logan alongside Chicano Park defenders, he stands in solidarity with the struggle for socialism in Venezuela and Cuba, and he supports the right of self-determination and reparations for the people of Hawaii, Puerto Rico and all nations oppressed by U.S. imperialism and colonialism. We had the chance to catch up with José, and discuss the campaign he and his team have been running in the fiftieth district, talk about what platforms he’s running on, what stances he would take as an elected member of Congress, discuss the nuances of running as a socialist candidate here in the United States. As well as discuss the unique challenges the campaign poses as the lone Chicano candidate in the race running in a district that historically has been a conservative stronghold and has not historically been known for any sort of progressive representation. We hope you guys enjoy the episode and I really hope that you guys keep rocking with us as we go into 2020 as well as our second year here on Step Off! Radio. We got a lot of really cool guests and new stories that we’re looking forward to telling here in 2020. With that said, we at Step Off! Radio hope that you all enjoy our discussion with José Cortés.
Bigotry has existed since the dawn of man. Fear of the other. We’ve seen it in American politics since our nation began. Alyssa Milano sat down to talk with Ammar Campa-Najjar, a candidate for congress who nearly beat Duncan Hunter in 2018. Since the election, Hunter pleaded guilty to misuse of campaign funds, and it now looks like he'll be trading the halls of Congress for the halls of prison. Ammar is again running for the seat, and he shares his inspirational story of growing up poor with a single mother, working at low-wage jobs from a young age and learning the dignity of hard work, and his efforts to unseat a southern California political dynasty. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/alyssa-milano-sorry-not-sorry/message
Arab Radio: Ray Hanania and Ali Younes on Arabs running for Congress in 2020 11-08-19 from WNZK AM 690 Radio in Detroit Ray Hanania, Special US Correspondent for the Arab News, and Ali Younes, reporter with AlJazeera, discuss the various Arab Americans who are running either for re-election to Congress such as Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib and Justin Amash, or who are running to win office such as Omar Campa-Najjar and Rush Darwish. We dig into the race in the Illinois 3rd Congressional District held by incumbent Democrat Dan Lipinski who is being challenge by Marie Newman, who almost beat Lipinski in March 2018, and is running again in the March 17, 2020 Democratic Primary. Also in the race is Rush Darwish, a Palestinian American who has been attacked by the pro-Israel anti-Arab Chicago Sun-Times newspaper. Also in the race is Abe Matthew. And we talk about Ammar Campa-Najjar, a Palestinian running for office in California. Campa-Najjar, 28, never met his grandfather, Muhammad Yusuf al-Najjar, who died in 1973 along with his wife (Campa-Najjar's grandmother) when they were targeted by an Israeli kill-squad. Campa-Najjar's grandfather was one of the planners of the massacre of Israelis at the Munich Olympics in 1972, before Campa-Najjar was even born. The Republican he is challenging has been accused of corruption. Campa-Najjar is half Mexican American (on his mother's side) and half Palestinian but the Republican incumbent Duncan Hunter. By Campa-Najjar has strong support from Democrats and came close to defeating Hunter in 2018. We also discuss the turbulent candidacy of Rashida Tlaib in Michigan and the candidacy of Ilhan Omar in Minnesota. For more information on the Radio show visit Ray Hanania's website at www.Hanania.com.

The Trump response in the aftermath of the El Paso and Dayton shootings was about condolences, condemnation of hate and offering proposals to prevent these incidents from occurring again. But does the Trump response and his recommended policies actually make a difference? Do Trump's recommendations violate our civil liberties? We also congratulate Darren Smith, Marty Caswell and Jordan Carruth on their new sports talk gig at XTRA 1360. Then we take an early look at the San Diego County Supervisors District 2 race and Poway’s Mayor Steve Vaus. We discuss the money flowing into the Vaus campaign and more broadly in all of the supervisor races. Over the past month, caught in the most competitive race of his political career and with his family dynasty hanging in the balance, Rep. Duncan Hunter embraced a campaign strategy that has been viewed as controversial to say the least. In addition to going after his opponent along traditional political lines in a district that has long been a Republican stronghold, Hunter has opted for a series of attacks labeling his Democratic challenger, Ammar Campa-Najjar, a “national security risk,” citing his Palestinian roots. http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/politics/sd-me-najjar-family-history-20181030-story.html
In this episode of Deconstructed, TJ O’Hara sits down with Joe Trippi, Democratic strategist, author, and political commentator.
