Another morning of covers, from country to soul and a little bit of rhythm and roll in store. This week's show celebrates the songwriters and performers who found themselves honored with tributes and covers that honor the sense of a piece. We'll hear covers of Tom T. Hall, Arthur Alexander, Robert Hunter, Derek Martin, Hank Snow and JJ Cale in the show today. The idea is to find a cover worth noting and put it up alongside the original. Just over a dozen songs to pick from in our two hours this morning featuring covers by Shannon McNally, Charley Crockett, Amy Black and Teddy Thompson. Join Dave Stroud for another episode from those dusty digital bins and turn up the volume for straight interpretations and a few wild takes in another covers show on a Friday morning from the KOWS studio in downtown Santa Rosa, California.

81% of white evangelicals voted for Donald Trump in 2016. Will that be the case this November? In the second of our two episodes on the upcoming US election, we explore the statistic that 81% of white evangelicals voted for Donald Trump in the 2016 election. According to a Pew Research report released in July, as many as 80% of white evangelicals indicated that they would still vote for him in 2020. We ask what ‘evangelical’ even means, and consider the possibility that Donald Trump acts as a kind of representative - even a strongman - for evangelicals who feel increasingly out of step with the secular mainstream. We explore how race factors into the mix as well, and questions of power and influence. Again, we’re joined by experts from the US to weigh in on the discussion: Amy Black, Professor of Political Science at Wheaton College in Illinois; Lisa Sharon Harper, author, activist, and the founder and president of Freedom Road; Andy Crouch, author, speaker, and the former editor of Christianity Today, America’s flagship evangelical magazine. In this episode, we also hear from Kristin Kobes du Mez, Professor of History at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and the author of Jesus and John Wayne: How white evangelicals corrupted a faith and fractured a nation. — Explore Kristin Kobes du Mez’s book Jesus and John Wayne: How white evangelicals corrupted a faith and fractured a nation Lisa Sharon Harper’s book The Very Good Gospel: How everything wrong can be made right Amy Black’s book Honoring God in Red or Blue: Approaching politics with humility, grace, and reason Andy Crouch’s book Playing God: Redeeming the gift of power Elisabeth Dias’ New York Times article ‘Christianity will have power’ Pew Research’s report indicating as many as 80% of white evangelicals would still vote for Donald Trump

A polarised country, a politicised faith - and how both are playing out in the US election. The bitter divides between Republicans and Democrats this US election season reflect a much bigger story. In this first of two episodes on the election, we explore the white evangelical embrace of the Republican Party and why Black voters - including Black Protestants - tend to vote Democrat. We also cover the way the breakdown of social trust, as well trust in institutions, makes this the most unpredictable election ever. We talk to Amy Black, Professor of Political Science at Wheaton College, Illinois; Andy Crouch, author speaker, and former editor of Christianity Today, North America’s flagship evangelical magazine; and Lisa Sharon Harper, author, speaker, and founder and president of Freedom Road, a consultancy training churches and other organisations in racial justice. — Explore Andy Crouch’s book Playing God: Redeeming the gift of power Our full interview with David Smith, Senior Lecturer in American Politics and Foreign Policy, at the US Studies Centre at the University of Sydney Robert Putnam’s book American Grace: How religion divides and unites us The full audio of Tim Dixon’s 2019 Richard Johnson Lecture: Crossing the Great Divide - Building bridges in an age of tribalism. Over the next few days we will be publishing extended interviews that were too big for the documentary, starting today with Dr Amy Black, professor of political science at Wheaton college. In this interview, Katie Harrison and Amy Black discuss the deal-breaking issues for evangelical voters, why they couldn't stomach Clinton and more.
Twenty years ago a Democratic president’s misbehaviour towards women provoked a mixture of sadness and anger from the American Bible belt. Today? A Republican with an equally controversial record of treatment of women gets the support of 80% of white evangelical Christians. More voted for Mr Trump in last year’s presidential election than voted for Mitt Romney, John McCain or the “born-again” George W Bush in the preceding elections. In UnHerd's latest audio documentary, Katie Harrison investigates why. After booking a spontaneous appointment with the enigmatic Madame Buraka, Estée found herself in a bedroom, above a south London pub, preparing to get inked. LISA BIALES (Be-Alice) sings with a crystal pure voice and writes music about the simple things in life. She weaves a down home blues vernacular with finger style guitar to create songs that feel like they have been around forever. Following in her mothers / parent's footsteps, this little ol gal from Ohio graced the silver screen (acting and singing) in Francis Ford Coppolas movie “Twixt. Inspired by a found recording of a song her mother wrote, Lisa goes back to her roots on her latest album The Beat of My Heart. AMY BLACK has always been drawn to soul singers. But it wasnt until she began exploring her own southern soul roots for her last album, The Muscle Shoals Sessions, that she found her musical sweet spot and knew her next stop had to be the place where blues and soul convergeMemphis. Released on her own Reuben Records, Memphis puts Black already considered “a bluesy, R&B heavy hitter by Elmore magazine on the same continuum as soul sisters from Dusty Springfield, Ann Peebles and Mavis Staples to Bonnie Raitt and Shelby Lynne. What can we learn from this crazy year in American politics? Is it ever appropriate for Christians to vote “none of the above?” How do our various Christian traditions shape our views of church and state? Author and political science professor Amy Black joins the gang for a rousing discussion - this week on the podcast!
The human body does so much for us and asks for so little in return. It’s like the big, silent buddy to our soul. All we gotta do is feed it and give it sleep, and it’ll do pretty much anything we ask of it. It makes sense then that some people decide to give their big, silent buddy a gift. A work of art. A tattoo. Today’s guest, Amy Black, helps people give this gift. She also is an amazing human being who gives a much larger gift to breast cancer survivors. Through her post-mastectomy tattoos, she helps women (and men) look in the mirror again. She helps bring their lives back to a sense of normalcy, and helps those who need feel a sense of closure.
