This guest has reignited my love for the blues. Meet Boone Froggett from Otis. Boone is the guitarist, singer, and founding member of the band. We get disconnected a couple of times in the beginning, but we push through and have a wonderful conversation. He grew up in the same town as The Kentucky Headhunters. That band was hugely influential, not just musically, but attitudinally, if that's a word. They showed Boone that you could be successful without moving to L.A. or Nashville. We talk about how he grew up performing, learning drums, guitar, singing, and sitar. When Otis formed, they decided to do things their way. They stayed at home, played what they wanted, like their debut album, which is a tribute album that Billy Gibbons bootlegged to give to people like Buddy Guy and Jeff Beck. Boone is also a cancer survivor. He opens up about what he went through and how he's doing now. The band has released a couple of top notch singles and are poised to release more new music soon. And hopefully they'll be hitting the road, too. So follow Otis @otisbandofficial on Instagram and they're on Facebook. Check out theotisband.com for all their links. When it comes to such simple things as communication, networking, and even relationships, there are three basic skills you need to remember. You need to build upon the relationship. You also need to maintain them, and work towards them growing. Joining us in the studio is music industry veteran Lyn Stevens who is an award winning photographer, who combines her love of photography with her passion for music. From that, she has learned the ability to network among industry peers, and shares her insight with our listeners. While on the subject, we also discuss documenting your career with photography, and how important it is in the bigger picture. Since her days as a producer at WIBA-FM and Morning DJ & Country Music Director WDUX in Wisconsin, Lyn has always had the bug to work in the music industry. Working in radio provided Lyn the opportunity to meet and interview legendary performers such as Merle Haggard, Ray Price, Charlie Daniels, Loretta Lynn, and The Kentucky Headhunters among many others. After moving to Nashville in 2009, her photography "hobby" started catching the eye of local performers. In 2012, the door was opened as Lyn was honored to have 3 of her photos on display as part of the Cameras and Community in Action Project at The Frist Center for The Visual Arts. Her work went on to be featured in Country Weekly, Billboard Magazine and the Nashville Music Guide. In late 2014, she was asked by country legends, Little Texas, to shoot the photos for their album, "Young for A Long Time," which garnered her the award for "Best Visual Art" at the 2015 Nashville Independent Music Awards. She added the title, “International Photographer” to her resume, after documenting a Blues/Rock tour to Australia in 2016 and another tour to Iceland in 2018. Her work has since been seen on television in Australia and in newspapers and magazines throughout Europe. She approaches photography as a documentarian, based off the strong belief that she is documenting future history, in the present-day moment. THE GEORGIA THUNDERBOLTS TRIUMPH WITH ‘RISE ABOVE IT ALL' INCREDIBLE NEW ROCK ALBUM: EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH LEAD SINGER TJ LYLE! Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. The Georgia Thunderbolts have announced their highly anticipated sophomore album, 'Rise Above It All,' set for release on August 23rd via Mascot Records. Featuring the quintet's signature blend of Southern rock, blues, and heartfelt Americana, the 13-track album showcases the band's ability to navigate a vast array of musical terrains, while also capturing the profound emotional and artistic growth fostered by their years on the road. The road to being hailed as the new torchbearers of Southern rock hasn't been as glamorous as you might imagine for The Georgia Thunderbolts. It wasn't many years ago that the guys busked at gas stations, fumbled through covers, and drove four hours to Alabama to play to a bartender and a three-legged dog sitting on a barstool. The most transformative experience for the band has been the month back in 2022, The Georgia Thunderbolts spent touring Europe with Black Stone Cherry. None of them had been across the pond before, and it was the longest they had been away from home. All the growth and maturation over the past two and half years can be heard on ‘Rise Above It All.' The 13-song collection is a flag-planting album, setting the stage for an exciting new chapter as The Georgia Thunderbolts continue to rise and resonate with audiences worldwide. NORMAN GREENBAUM ‘THE LOST INTERVIEWS' with RAY SHASHO EPISODE 13 -INTERVIEWED Dec 6th 2011 "When I die and they lay me to rest Gonna go to the place that's the best When I lay me down to die Goin'up to the spirit in the sky"   Norman Greenbaum is considered by many music experts to be a one-hit wonder.  But when the lyrics to that hit meant so much to so many and with eternal impact… then who cares? Greenbaum's “Spirit In The Sky” echoed an inspirational message of optimism for hope of an afterlife. The song reached #3 on the Billboard charts and sold two million singles by 1970, and during an important transitional period in music that witnessed Album-Oriented Rock formats overshadowing Top 40 singles on the airwaves. Greenbaum created one of the most recognizable guitar riffs in rock and roll history using an industrial fuzz tone. Released in 1969, “Sprit In The Sky” has stood the test of time. Greenbaum states, “Motorists actually still pull over to the side of the road when they hear the song being played on the radio.” And the song continues to be a heavily requested tune at funerals. Rolling Stone magazine ranked “Spirit In The Sky,” #341 on the list of top ‘500 Greatest Songs of All Time.' Countless musicians have mimicked their version of the celestial composition including Elton John, DC Talk, Darrel Mansfield, The Stovall Sisters (The back-up singers on the original recording), Doctor and the Medics, Nina Hagen, and Norman's favorite cover version, The Kentucky Headhunters.  “Spirit In The Sky” has been featured in countless movies, TV series and commercials. The song has also been spotlighted on the 2008 music video game- Rock Band 2, enlightening a whole new generation of “Spirit” advocates. Norman Greenbaum began a music career as a member of Dr. West's Medicine Show and Junk Band. Their sole hit was, “The Eggplant that Ate Chicago” (#52 on Billboard's top 100) in 1966. Greenbaum departed the band and began a solo career under the direction of producer Erik Jacobsen (Lovin' Spoonful, Sopwith Camel, Chris Issak). Raised of the Jewish faith, Greenbaum states that there wasn't much resentment from the Jewish Community over his Christian-like lyrics, especially his reference to Jesus. The only true criticism came from the Christian side who were not very pleased with his lyric… “Never been a sinner I never sinned.” Greenbaum says, “I just didn't know better at the time.” Today Norman Greenbaum is 69 years old and lives in Northern California. His 1969 metaphysical one- hit wonder continues to be adored and emulated by countless fans. Most recently Peter Frampton covered “Spirit In The Sky” on William Shatner's latest album, Seeking Major Tom. Norman enjoys sponsoring races at the local fair. He says, “All it consists of is getting around thirty friends together, having a party, and getting your picture taken with the winning racehorse.” He's also won a bunch of blue ribbons entering various works. Here's my interview with Songwriter/Vocalist/Guitarist/Rock and Roll Icon/ and a very amusing and hip guy… Norman Greenbaum. Metallica  was a big deal well before the release of this album.  Singer and guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich had formed the band a decade prior to this fifth studio release, technically called Metallica but most commonly referenced as The Black Album due to its all-black cover.  Hetfield and Ulrich, together with lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Jason Newsted were successful commercially and critically on the strength of previous albums, particularly their third (Master of Puppets) and fourth (...And Justice for All) studio releases.  However The Black Album would be their most successful album release, and the second longest-charting traditional title release in history, behind only Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon." Metallica is one of the founding bands of thrash metal, and had a reputation for musicianship that was both fast and complex.  The Black Album saw the band developing a slower, more refined sound with singles that were shorter and tighter, making them more accessible to a general audience.  Hetfield also sought to create songs with a less "scream-heavy" vocalization.  The result of their efforts was both their first number one album on the charts, and an album filled with some of their most well-known singles.  The album is more heavy metal than their previous releases, but still retains a thrash metal edge.Metallica would go on from success to success, never really seeing their international fame fade.  This album marks the point where the band had learned to master both their musical craft and their stage craft.  John Lynch brings us this landmark heavy metal album. Enter SandmanThis track was the first single, the first song written for the album, and the last to receive lyrics.  Hammett wrote the primary guitar riff after being inspired by Soundgarden's Louder than Love album.  The original lyrics were much darker, referencing sudden infant death syndrome, and Lars Ulrich and producer Bob Rock encouraged Hetfield to rework them .Sad But TrueThe fifth and final single from the album was originally written in the key of E.  When the producer pointed out that every song on the album was written in E, the band tuned down to D for this track.  The idea for the lyrics about blind faith were inspired by the 1978 film "Magic" in which a ventriloquist is controlled by his puppet. The UnforgivenThe second single is a heavy power ballad about the struggles of the individual against an all-powerful machine-like force holding him captive.  It has a softer style than most Metallica songs, and allows Hetfield's vocal musicianship to shine through.  Two sequel songs would be released on future albums.Nothing Else MattersHetfield did not intend to release this song, but wrote it for himself when feeling homesick on tour.  Ulrich encouraged him to include it in the album, and it is one of their biggest hits.  While originally written about a girlfriend, the song has become a reference to Metallica's fans on tour. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Lets Work Together by The Kentucky Headhunters (from the motion picture “Harley Davidson & the Marlboro Man”) This movie was a biker film with Don Johnson and Mickey Rourke in a Western style. STAFF PICKS:She's So High by BlurWayne is well known for his affinity to the Manchester psychedelic sound.  However, this group with the Manchester sound is actually from London.  While the song would appear to be about drugs, it is actually a reference to a girl who is out of the singer's league.  Blur hit number 48 on the UK single's chart with this release.Straight to Your Heart by Bad EnglishRob's staff pick was written by Jonathan Cain for this supergroup formed from members of Journey and The Babys.  John Waite's distinctive voice is clear on this hit from their second and final album, but it also maintains the rock sound. Face the Music by RTZ Bruce shares his take on this group formed by Brad Delp and Barry Goudreau, originally founding members of the group Boston, along with Brian Maes on keyboards, Tim Archibald on bass, and David Stefanelli on drums.  This single is off RTZ's debut album "Return to Zero."  While this song only went to number 49 on the US pop charts, the success of RTZ would convince Delp to leave Boston, only to return to the group a couple of years later.Crazy by SealLynch's staff pick is about the days when the Soviet Union was collapsing and the Berlin wall came down.  English singer songwriter Seal brings a haunting, smooth sound.  “In a sky full of people only some want to fly, isn't that crazy?”   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Sunshine by Timbuk 3The group best known for “The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades” penned this steel drum-laden instrumental.

It's Week 2 of #FanboySummer, and Dave, Mikey, and #TwitterlessDrEarl seek to improve the show by bringing on people better than all of us... and when its about music, when its about movie music, when its about movies about music but aren't musicals, what better person to bring in than Mississippi's Finest, guitar player and worship leader and podcast host and Discord Datcord fellow Matt Mink, aka, The Mink Panther. The fellas talk about Matt and where he's from, where he's going, and why he loves music. The discussion leads to some of the group's fave music influences, including some old country like The Statlers, Jamie Johnson, and more Kentucky Headhunters than any podcast has talked about in recent memory. And, of course, the Forrester Sisters, because of course. Then, the return of Birthday Movies, including the absolute murderer's row of films released in June 1987, then the Top Five movies about music, but are not actually musicals... films with the beloved Anna Kendrick and films with Pixar and films with a non Danielsan Ralph Macchio but not the early Britney Spears and films with Michelle Pfieffer on a piano and films with George Clooney lip syncing and a Fountains of Wayne shout out and d$ in touch with his heritage on a golf cart in Cancun and of course, Christopher Guest. And a ton more. Stick around in the aftershow segment to hear who gets #3 on FanboySummer! The movies discussed, and where streaming at the time of recording: Amadeus (for rental) The Commitments (for rental) Coco (Disney+) Control (TubiTV; FreeVee) Crazy Heart (for rental) Crossroads (the good one) (TubiTV) Crossroads (the crap one) (unavailable) The Fabulous Baker Boys (unavailable) La Bamba (Starz) A Mighty Wind (HBO Max) Nick & Nora's Infinite Playlist (HBO Max; TubiTV) O Brother Where Art Thou? The Kentucky Headhunters were once considered the "Dark Horse of Country Music", due to the huge Country radio, press, and fan following the band achieved, despite their "Rock sound" and "rural Southern style”.  Now they're just considered one of the most influential Southern Country Rock Bands in history! In 1991, Entertainment Weekly wrote that although the band did not sell as many albums as contemporaries George Strait or Garth Brooks, "they may just end up redefining Country for the '90s" given the diverse range of influences and styles.” and Billboard called the band "arguably the most consistent and durable Southern Rock outfit on the planet.” The Kentucky Headhunters have released 8 studio albums and 23 singles. Their version of  "Oh Lonesome Me,” went to #8 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts in 1990. They've won 3 CMA Awards (including twice being named the vocal group of the year), an ACM award, and a GRAMMY in 1990 for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group for their double-platinum album, "Pickin' on Nashville”And they are STILL GOING STRONG! The Kentucky Headhunters' newest album titled "That's a Fact Jack!” was released in 2021 and they've announced over 40 tour dates for the summer and fall of 2022 ... Not a bad "Country Music career" for a Southern Rock Band from Glasgow, Kentucky who started off in the 70's with a totally different name while recording for Led Zeppelin's "Swan Song" record label! WHAT!? Here to explain how all of that happened (and more) is one of the founding members of The Kentucky Headhunter… The one and only, Mr. Richard Young! Christian Music Archive Podcast

Greg Martin of the Kentucky Headhunters is my guest today. He and the guys in the Headhunters have been making music since the 1960's when they started a band together for an elementary school talent show. I first heard about Greg due to his work with Darrell Mansfield, but I have discovered that he released a gospel blues project called the Mighty Jeremiahs and worked with the likes of Dale Thompson and Bride, Phil Keaggy, to name a few. Greg is a fellow believer who has a passion for Jesus, and we looked back over his career to see how God's plan has brought him right to where he is today. We'll talk music, faith, and cola. How's that for a teaser? Greg Martin: Website, Facebook, and Facebook. And of course, on our page: Christian Music Archive. Child violinist prodigy, exceptional entertainer, studied musical scholar, or creative camper songwriter…call her what you will, Micah Bonn is all that and more. Hailing from Claxton, Georgia, Miss Bonn has been influenced by everyone from Bach and Charlie Daniels to Jerry Lee Lewis and Gram Parsons. Despite her tender age of 21, she is the 2017 winner of the John Hartford Memorial Songwriting Contest, has shared the stage with the Kentucky Headhunters, opened for Connie Smith, and appeared on a slew of TV and radio shows around the south…and that's only a few of the things she's accomplished. This episode's musical section features Micah doing “Pink Flamingos”, an autobiographical original cowrite with cohost Sean Clark, and a performance of “Little Love”, cowritten with Sean and Uncle Dave Griffin, both numbers showcasing her excellent vocals and picking style. The talented multi-instrumentalist takes us home with a fine Guy Clark/Shawn Camp song, “Sis Draper”, a period-sounding piece that'll have you pickin' the chicken peckin's from between your toes. https://www.patreon.com/somethinginthewater https://somethinginthewater.captivate.fm somethinginthewaterpodcast@gmail.com https://www.facebook.com/somethinginthewaterpodcast/ https://www.instagram.com/somethinginthewaterpodcast/ https://www.facebook.com/cautionlightmedia/

This hour is a little heavier on blues rock, but there's still a pretty interesting mix of artists and styles. I've also got a set of great covers of the grandaddy of all of this - Robert Johnson. The Black Keys, The Kentucky Headhunters, The Blues Preachers, Charlie Hunter & Lucy Woodward, and Lil' Ed & The Blues Imperials help make up the hour. It's an hour of blues with an edge, and - well, you know it - another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.
