Authenticity might be the most over-used word in the influencer industrial complex. But what does it even mean? What the hell is an authentic woman? An authentic mother? From celebrities to politicians to Instagram moms, women are attacked for trying too hard to get it, or are ripped to shreds for not having enough. This week, Jo tries to figure out how to be a more authentic mother by going to both extremes: she speaks to the surfing Instagram mamas of Byron Bay, as well as a woman who chose to post her home birth on Instagram stories. But at the end of the day is searching for authenticity online just a trap designed to keep us on a hedonistic treadmill that makes us feel bad about ourselves? Or is it actually possible to be a real mom and still get paid for it. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com

Do you know what it means to be authentic? Whenever we hear the word authentic, we automatically associate it with a physical object being genuine and of high value, such as an authentic Romare Bearden (https://beardenfoundation.org/) painting or a natural diamond. The opposite of authentic is inauthentic - not real, fake, phony, insincere. When we think about the concept of the authentic self, most women focus mainly on being truthful and honest. These are valuable attributes, but really living an authentic life involves a lot more than just telling the truth. So, the bad news is that being honest is not enough. Today we'll look at what it means to be authentic, why we slip into being fake, and how you can make adjustments to show up as your authentic self. This episode of The Authentic Woman is dedicated to the memory of Esther Windmueller, who gave so much of her time and energy in her final years to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer. Ovarian Cancer is difficult to detect and, therefore, has a high mortality rate because it is often not discovered until it has reached a late stage. 22,000 women receive this diagnosis every year – and 14,000 women die of it annually. Shannon speaks with Esther Windmueller, an ovarian cancer survivor who founded the nonprofit organization Cancer Dancer. Esther's organization helps women who have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer understand the disease, learn all of their options and become aware of all of the newest treatments available - as well as joining these women together in a supportive community so they can connect with others who truly understand their journey. We discuss the warning signs of ovarian cancer so our listeners can be informed and recognize a potential problem as early as possible. Through awareness lives can be saved. “The most rewarding part of working with CancerDancer is the feedback from those who say we have really, really helped them through some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Hearing this keeps us going.” ~ Esther Windmueller The Authentic Woman with Shannon Fisher explores personal, political, and societal perspectives of the female experience in America. Shannon's guest this week, Julia Torres Barden, an award-winning journalist, gubernatorial appointee, and PTSD survivor. She endured a violent New York City childhood as a Puerto Rican girl from the South Bronx, which she chronicles in her book, “NEWYORICANGIRL…Surviving my Spanglish Life.” This novel/memoir is a gritty tale of trauma and painful cultural assimilation while pursuing the American dream. After navigating a traumatic childhood that included rape, her mother's conflicted life as the mistress of a powerful CEO, alcoholic parents, and forced adoption, Julia found herself trapped in New York City on 9/11. "In 2013, I pushed my luck and I lived. I stared down my deepest fears and didn’t back down. I shared my vulnerability with strangers and they embraced me. I took so many risks that I exhausted myself to the brink of disaster. I looked the boogeyman straight in the eye and he blinked first; leaving me victorious and free," said Julia about her memoir. Washington Irving wrote: “There is in every true woman’s heart a spark of heavenly fire, which lies dormant in the broad daylight of prosperity; but which kindles up, and beams and blazes in the dark hour of adversity.” As I read these words a decade ago, I could see her, a drab woman, defeated by life, dragging herself through her days in the normal world, but in an abnormal world of strife and danger, she would come alive and inspire others. And so Kate Cummings, the hero of my novel A Spark of Heavenly Fire was born. "I am thrilled to be the first guest on Shannon Fisher’s new show, The Authentic Woman. It’s fitting that that this book is being highlighted because Shannon herself is a true woman who embodies the spark of heavenly fire the world so desperately needs." ~ author Pat Bertram Pat's Blog Pat's Facebook The Authentic Woman is a weekly radio show hosted by women's rights leader Shannon Fisher offering perspectives on the female experience in America. This week on The Authentic Woman, Guest Host Susan Singer will interview author and journalist, Pythia Peay. Peay writes about spirituality, psychology, and the American psyche. Over the past thirty years, she has covered such topics as the soul of the city, prayer circles, near death experiences, the rebirth of “feminine spirituality,” post-traumatic stress syndrome, depression, political psychology, and has conducted interviews with scores of pioneering thinkers from Clarissa Pinkola Estes to Robert Jay Lifton. Peay’s work over the years has appeared in numerous magazines and newspapers, including Utne Magazine, Washingtonian, Religion News Service, The Washington Post, La Repubblica, The Cleveland Plain Dealer and past publications such as George, New Woman and Common Boundary. Currently she writes for The Huffington Post, Psychology Today, and her own blog, America on the Couch. She has received awards for her work from The American Association of University Women and Women in the Media. Susan Singer is a rabble-rousing artist, activist, writer, and teacher whose primary desire is to make the world a better place by ending violence against women, helping people find their personal path, creating beauty, and spreading creativity. She uses her artwork to reach deep within herself to find her core and to channel her vision of Spirit to inspire, delight, (and perhaps sometimes provoke!) others. This week on The Authentic Woman, Guest Host Susan Singer interviews a gifted, talented, self-taught photographer and storyteller, Sylvia DeVoss. Sylvia began life as a Jehovah’s Witness, was kicked out for heresy at age 13, went off the deep end, married, had a child, divorced, spent five months in a mental institution due to a case of mistaken identity, loved women, realized she was gay (yes, in that order), then slowly began her climb back to sanity with the help of friends, art, and her tremendous courage. Sylvia has battled depression that threatened to consume her, but she is now on the other side and celebrating each day. Her artwork conveys her intense love of music, her twin granddaughters, and nature. Her storytelling is the most natural thing about her; it is impossible to talk to Sylvia without getting wound into one of her stories about her fascinating life. This show will take you into the mind of this remarkable woman. This week, we are going to discuss a very serious health topic on The Authentic Woman. Ovarian Cancer is difficult to detect and, therefore, has a high mortality rate because it is often not discovered until it has reached a late stage. 22,000 women receive this diagnosis every year – and 14,000 women die of it annually. My guest this week is Esther Windmueller, an ovarian cancer survivor who founded the nonprofit organization Cancer Dancer. Esther's organization helps women who have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer understand the disease, learn all of their options and become aware of all of the newest treatments available - as well as joining these women together in a supportive community so they can connect with others who truly understand their journey. We will discuss the warning signs of ovarian cancer so our listeners can be informed and recognize a potential problem as early as possible. Through awareness lives can be saved. “The most rewarding part of working with CancerDancer is the feedback from those who say we have really, really helped them through some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Hearing this keeps us going.” ~ Esther Windmueller. This week, Shannon welcomes three women spearheading an effort to raise awareness of the dangers of the permanent birth control device Essure. Her guests are Angie Firmalino, founder the Essure Problems group; Amanda Dykeman, an administrator of the group; and Amanda Rusmisell, the group’s legislative liaison. The Essure Problems group has connected nearly 25,000 women who have had adverse reactions to the device. This show will highlight the potentially fatal complications of the Essure device so women can make an informed decision about having the device implanted in their fallopian tubes. The device has garnered thousands of reports of autoimmune issues, adhesions and punctures of abdominal organs, excessive bleeding, severe pelvic pain, and even death. Erin Brockovich helped the Essure Problems group gain traction. There is now bipartisan legislation before Congress calling for the removal of Essure from the market introduced by Rep. Michael Fitzpatrick. The Authentic Woman is a weekly radio show hosted by women's rights leader Shannon Fisher offering perspectives on the female experience in America.
