Designed as a simplified smartphone alternative, the Plod can make and receive phone calls, record conversations, send notes to email, and provide AI summaries of meetings and recordings. But is it worth the £349 price tag? Tim breaks down what works, what needs improvement, and where the device fits in an already crowded market of assistive tech. From its intuitive, tactile interface and snappy performance, to its limitations with Bluetooth pairing and occasional crashes, this review dives deep into real-world usage. Steven and Shaun also discuss the broader implications of purpose-built assistive tech versus mainstream solutions. Can niche devices still compete, or are they fighting a losing battle against AI-powered smartphones and wearables? Whether you're curious about the Plod, want to simplify your tech setup, or are just wondering where assistive hardware is headed in the age of ChatGPT and Gemini, this episode offers honest insights and balanced commentary.Get in touch with Double Tap by emailing us feedback@doubletaponair.com or by call 1-877-803-4567 and leave us a voicemail. Tim Dixon, Co-Founder of More in Common: Bridging Divides in a Polarized World.  Tim discusses the organization's core mission to understand and address the growing polarization in societies worldwide. Through their innovative approach, More in Common leverages the insights of social psychology and extensive public opinion research. Their aim is to unravel the complex dynamics of societal attitudes. Tim shares his personal journey that led to the creation of More in Common, highlighting a pivotal moment marked by the tragic murder of a close friend and colleague. This personal loss ignited his commitment to dedicating a significant part of his career to tackling societal divides. He emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between the often-sensationalized public perception and the nuanced reality on contentious issues. This gap, he notes, is evident in how the public perceives topics like immigration and refugee acceptance, which is frequently misaligned with the headlines. A significant part of the conversation revolves around the approach to finding solutions to these divides. Tim underscores the essential role of leadership across various sectors in steering conversations and policies away from polarized and binary viewpoints. He advocates for a more evidence-based, practical approach that challenges prevailing misconceptions and promotes constructive dialogue. Tim stresses the power of curiosity and listening in overcoming polarization. By encouraging open and respectful dialogues between people with opposing views, he believes that common ground can be found. This approach is not just about resolving conflicts but about understanding the underlying values and motivations that drive people's opinions and attitudes. Tim highlights the critical need for leaders who can navigate through these polarized times and offer hope and practical solutions. He shares compelling examples of how changing perceptions and fostering hope can significantly impact public attitudes and willingness to engage in constructive dialogue. Tim's insights offer a hopeful perspective on addressing one of the most pressing issues of our time - societal polarization. Thank you for downloading this episode of the Do One Better Podcast. Hello, our favourite little squirrels, and welcome to Episode 82 of Blind Guys Chat. We begin this week with tales from Nairobi. Our own travelling wilbury, Jan, has just returned from South Africa where he was introduced to every person living on the continent - because he's so famous don't ya know! Yes, Jan has been in the region for the last week selling his wares and wearables, and is very impressed with how much knowledge blind and low vision people in Nairobi have about assistive technology, especially compared to 15 years ago. But it wasn't all work and no play for Jan. No, no, folks. He managed a little play time with some of the local pets in the surrounding areas of this modern city. Do you take taxis? It appears that Óran has had some trouble recently with taxis refusing to collect himself and Larry (the very best guide dog in the world ever). And before you say it's because Óran is so grumpy, it isn't that, we promise. We want to hear from you: have you had any bad experiences recently and more importantly, did you report the incident to your local taxi regulator? Let us know: blindguyschat@gmail.com. Tell us all your taxi-related stories! Before Clodagh gets readin' those emails, she wants to tell you about RNIB's campaign. It's called ‘See the person not the sightloss', and apparently it is very good. You can check it out here: https://www.rnib.org.uk/our-campaigns/see-differently-see-the-person/. In emails this week, it appears that Dave Nason and Sky are potty for Stuart's latest parody song, much to Jan and Óran's astonishment. Dave also wants to know if you can help him with his upcoming trip to London. The Blind Guys are recommending he avails himself of an Access Card which, among other things, offers discounts on some of the main attractions in London. You can check it out here: www.accesscard.online. You can even skip some queues if you have one of these – yay! We have an audio message from Tim Dixon. Tim has recorded a wonderful report on navigating Sight Village where he recently met Stuart and lived to tell the tale. So, stop lighting fireworks and bangers. Hello our little ducklings and welcome. First things first: Some of you did not believe that Stuart did in fact climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Well... we have proof! For those of you who have not seen this picture of Stuart standing at the top click on this link and you will have your proof. (Before you scold us – there is alt text, don't worry!)   Now, on with the show. Yes, it is number 80 which in numerology terms is a symbol of abundance and prosperity. “If you have been working hard towards your goals, the universe is letting you know that your efforts will be rewarded.” So that means the Blind Guys are stuffed, because as you know, we're a bunch of slackers.   Jan and Óran have recently experienced some issues with taxis - we want to know if there is government legislation in your country which prevents a taxi driver from refusing you and your guide dog? Let us know: blindguyschat@gmail.com   Do you look forward to autumn? Well, someone on the team thinks Óran is too cynical, and especially about autumn. Yes he hates autumn and winter almost as much as he hates the fact that iPhones have the best screen reader available for smartphones. Talking about poxy iPhones, will you be purchasing a new iPhone 15 or are you like the Blind Guys and are completely fed up with the lack of innovation from Apple lately?   Stuart has ordered a Sky Stream box, but will it live up to all the hype? And how does Stuart feel about not being able to record content? Mr Cynical is querying if Stuart will be able to watch the content he wants with audio description via the 'on demand' section. Stuart has also hinted that he might record a demo of setting up the box etc but Jan and Óran reckon he will make some excuse for not doing this for the next show, probably something like having to sack his pool boy for not cleaning the pool correctly...   BTW, don't forget that you can now use the Be My Eyes app to get in direct contact with a Sky rep to get real time video assistance if you ever need help.   Our guests this week are Peter O'Toole and Eleanor Martha Burke who are here to talk about “forest bathing”. Peter is Head of Counselling at NCBI and has recently started this “Role of Nature in Health and Wellbeing Series” so that people with vision impairments can get the benefits of being outdoors and bonding with nature. Eleanor gives us her views on a recent event that Peter hosted in Co. Wicklow. Mr Cynical-pants was not overly enthusiastic, but Clodagh highly recommends it. If you are interested in attending the next event in October you can find out more, and register your place here: www.ncbi.ie/event/the-role-of-nature-in-health-and-wellbeing-series-final-in-person-event-for-2023/   We have emails from Ana Cody who thinks our guest from ep 73 has a yummy voice and also has strong opinions on beer slushies at the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. We have Axel in Sweden (cool name, Axel!) who liked our chat with Tim Dixon, and would like to know about any upcoming assistive technology events. Well Axel, you can check out www.qac.ac.uk - you can find all the info within the “exhibitions” and “news/events” sections; and you never know, you might see the Blind Guys at some of these events. Also, Ms Cavendish sends in a request/threat to spank Óran. Ooh la la!   So, strip down to your birthday suit and lie on the forest bath floor, ignore the swarm of midges going to town on your nether regions, and bask in the petrichor that is: Blind Guys Chat.   4 out of 5 trees prefer it to bark.   Support Blind Guys Chat by contributing to their tip jar: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/blind-guys-chat

Tim Dixon illuminates the forces across the Western World that are driving us apart and the challenge this presents for how we live together in pluralistic societies. --- Tim Dixon gave CPX's Richard Johnson Lecture in 2019, and in this extended podcast we revisit the timely insights we gained from Tim that night. This speech turned out to be eerily prescient given all that came to pass in the years after it was delivered. In a lively and engaging presentation, we are reminded of the perils of public conversation that is overrun with a spirit of contempt. Our democracies are precious and fragile, and Tim believes there really are things we can do to preserve them.  He offers realistic initiatives that help us withstand the forces of division and strengthen the social glue that healthy societies require. Might faith communities have something unique to offer in this regard? Tim Dixon believes so. --- Explore: Richard Johnson Lecture More in Common

Is Britain really the hopelessly split society that we fear? The good news is that as the Brexit rubble settles, our common ground is growing, and Britain is more up for serious political change than almost any other Western democracy. Tim Dixon, co-founder of pro-consensus pressure group More In Common and former advisor to Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard in Australia, talks to Ros Taylor about the weird online and offline dynamics that over-represent vocal extremes, and why Brexity nationalists agree with progressives more than you think. “We've lived off the capital of past generations in terms of the glue that holds society together. Now we need to reinvest in it.”“People's identities as Remainer or Leaver is still a lot stronger than their identification with a political party.”“We tend to forget that most people don't see the world through a political lens.”“If politics can come back into people's lives, and be useful again, then it can be really transformative.”Presented by Ros Taylor. Simon and Tim then talk to Tim Dixon, enduring Covid19 lockdown in London. Tim is the co-founder of More in Common, and leads a team seeking to build civic bonds and strengthen democracies by doing research and telling the stories of what we share, as opposed to what divides us. Tim sees some fascinating possibilities in what might emerge from our experience of the virus. Observing renewed community solidarity both online and from local initiatives, as well as a concern for the most vulnerable, he wonders if we can find ways to maintain this once the crisis has passed. The conversation also considers the possibility that when faced with mortality and an inability to control our lives, more people might turn to spiritual answers to life’s deepest questions. The universe conspires to support us, and many times, that means that it will first bring us to our knees. For Tim Dixon, universal support showed up by way of getting fired from his coaching position with the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. As much as it was a shock to him and a significant blow to his ego, Tim and his wife had been looking for an exit strategy for months. This duality is a place where many of us get caught up, and when our life situation shifts, even when we were asking for change, we find ourselves split between the excitement of freedom and the fear of the unknown. Tim looks back today at that experience as one of the best things that ever happened to him because it called him to a higher level of performance. It required him to surrender control, embark on a journey of inner work, and it taught him how to forgive, which he believes is the ultimate key to freedom. He was forced to redefine himself and play a bigger game in life, the very thing that inspired his business, The Mental Locker. For 27 years Tim was in the arena of baseball, first as a professional player and second as a coach. He believed baseball was the end-all be-all for this professional life, but since that serendipitous day at the academy, he sees that excellence far exceeds the realm of athletics. Tim is innately competitive, and today, his internal competitiveness is towards how present he can be in his daily life. How can he be precisely where his feet are in a moment, and how can he become a better listener in the moment to assist others in being their best? This guy has an inner fire that drives him forward, and he is learning how to use that fire with finesse and less agenda than in the past. Tim is an athlete, best-selling author, and a sports psychologist. Tim is a Performance Coach for Buffini and Company, the largest business coaching and training company in North America. Why are we so polarised? Tim Dixon offers not just a diagnosis, but actual solutions. --- “It's much easier to hold very hostile prejudicial views of other people if you actually don't know them personally.” Tim Dixon is co-founder of More in Common, an international initiative which has published some of the world's leading research on the drivers of polarisation and social division. He worked as chief speechwriter and economic adviser to two Australian Prime Ministers. He's helped start and grow social movement organisations around the world to protect civilians in Syria, address modern-day slavery, promote gun control in the US, and engage faith communities in social justice. He's concerned about how our social glue is coming unstuck - and what that might mean for the future. “We are living in a pre-something period … The forces that are driving us apart are growing, they're intensifying. If we don't pay serious attention to how we bring people back together and transcend these divisions, if we continue to play the kind of toxic politics that has been characteristic of the last few years, I think we're headed in a very, very dangerous direction.” Tim speaks with Simon Smart on a visit to Oz to give CPX's annual Richard Johnson Lecture, “Crossing the Great Divide: Building bridges in an age of tribalism”. Both his research and his personal story mean that he's better placed than almost anyone to make sense of our echo chambers, our battles over national identity, and the predicament of the “exhausted majority”. And he goes well beyond diagnosis, to propose actual solutions to polarisation. “It is out of terrible catastrophe good things can come. In a sense, as a Christian, I think of that in the context of the resurrection ... there is something about the second chance, the renewal, the fact that we're not always stuck in the story that we seem to be a part of.” --- SUBSCRIBE to Life & Faith on Apple Podcasts: http://bit.ly/cpxpodcast OR on Spotify: http://cpx.video/spotify FIND US on Facebook: www.facebook.com/publicchristianity FOLLOW US on Twitter: www.twitter.com/cpx_tweet

Programledare: Ivar Ekman ivar.ekman@sverigesradio.se Producent: Sally Henriksson sally.henriksson@sverigesradio.se Tekniker: Fabian Begnert

What is a life well lived? We consider the ripple effects of one man's influence on generations of students. --- A British Prime Minister is once reported to have said, “I wish I had as much power as a school headmaster!” Every one of us has some influence on those around us, for better and for worse. For some people, the ripple effects of that influence go on and on, far beyond our expectations. Rod West was one of those people. In this episode of Life & Faith, we hear about the impact one ordinary – but also not-so-ordinary – man had on students, families, and communities over two decades as headmaster of Trinity Grammar School in Sydney. “I always saw him as a bit like a Prime Minister, and that I went to a school that was like a country, and he had his teachers and his senior officials around him who were like his cabinet. I thought he had the charisma of – well, in those days, Bob Hawke was Australia's Prime Minister – he reminded me a lot of Hawkey, because he had this larger-than-life presence. Our notion of a Prime Minister probably has changed since the days of Bob Hawke … but Rod had that character of largeness.” Tim Dixon was a student of Rod's, and went on himself to become a speechwriter for two of Australia's Prime Ministers. His respect and admiration for his former headmaster and mentor is shared by hundreds, if not thousands, of his fellow students. In a letter Tim wrote to Rod a few days before his death, he tries to articulate what he most appreciated about him: “You've always had a wonderful sense of the theatrical and you brought exuberance and vitality to classrooms and dinner tables all the course of your life. But more than that, you've always brought a sense of transcendence to every endeavour, whether it was a chapel service, a Latin class, a prefects' meeting, or a bunch of lifeless bureaucrats working on a government report … I think you've helped me understand a larger God.” If the bestseller lists are anything to go by, biographies and autobiographies are perpetually compelling to the reading public. What makes a life well lived? What is power for? How do we manage, across a lifetime, to focus on what's truly important, rather than getting constantly caught up in the merely urgent? This episode sketches the character of a humble but influential man through the eyes of one who knew him well, in hopes that an examined life has something to tell all of us about who we are, and who we would like to become. --- BUY Rod West's book, The Heart of Education: https://www.booktopia.com.au/the-heart-of-education-roderick-west/prod9780646965758.html SUBSCRIBE to Life & Faith on Apple Podcasts: http://bit.ly/cpxpodcast FIND US on Facebook: www.facebook.com/publicchristianity FOLLOW US on Twitter: www.twitter.com/cpx_tweet

However, what will his administration do to deal with the consequences of Climate Change that affect the Economy, Human Health and National Security, 3 themes that are important parts of the Republican Platform.  I suggest a way to approach dealing with the consequences of the Climate Change using a great article written by Dr. Ellen Prager and Dr. Tim Dixon in the Huffington Post.  Enjoy the podcast!
