We had some IRL friends wanting to get into TTRPGs, so we hosted them a game of Fellowship set in the Exalted universe. The players are new to the hobby, the game and the setting.   The pitch for the game is that it's a full circle Lunar campaign set at the late Shogunate era / onset of the Balorian Crusade. The tone is goofy gonzo, and we play fast and loose with the setting, wrecking things as we go. Initially the players wanted to play something with mechas / warstriders, but we ditched that idea without scaling down the threats they are facing, since hey, it's Fellowship, it's rather forgiving for that ;).   Our cast for this series includes: - Peter as the Overlord Framework, Prince Balor of the Dreadful Gaze - Vanessa as Anastasia Volkova, a No Moon Lunar, the Collector Playbook - Galaxy as Lofar the Greedy, a Full Moon Lunar, the Dwarf Playbook - Jeff as Siegfried, a Full Moon Lunar, the Elf Playbook - Scott as Cat of the Endless Void, Puddle of Unknown Liquid, a Changing Moon Lunar, the Rain Playbook

Dr. Anastasia Volkova is the CEO and Co-founder of Regrow Ag, a software company specializing in scalable decarbonization solutions for agriculture, using satellite imagery and proprietary biogeochemical modeling to measure and reduce scope 3 emissions on farms. Operating globally with over 100 customers—including General Mills, Nestle, Kellogg and Unilever—and monitoring 10%+ of the world's arable land, Regrow aims to be a one-stop shop for the agriculture industry's climate needs. Anastasia has a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Sydney. She is also a member of the Forbes Technology Council, a TEDx speaker, and the recipient of multiple awards and honors, including MIT's Innovators Under 35, BBC's 100 Women 2020, UBS Global Visionary, and Bloomberg's New Economy Catalyst. In this episode, we discuss: ●     How Anastasia went from a PhD in Aerospace Engineering to focusing on agriculture ●     Why some widespread agricultural practices need updating ●     How to create a more resilient food system Key Takeaways: ●     The Compounding Effects of Our Actions: Actions don't exist in a vacuum—they compound over time, for better or worse. Agriculture provides a stark example of this.. Conventional practices that release significant greenhouse gases year after year contribute to climate change, creating extreme and unpredictable weather that destabilizes food production. This instability carries immense direct and indirect costs for society. The more we continue down this path, the worse it will become. On the flip side, investing in regenerative practices—while requiring upfront investments—yields compounding positive effects over time. These practices not only help mitigate climate change but also build a resilient food system that can sustain future generations. The key is zooming out to understand how the long-term impacts of today's choices ripple far into the future. ●     The Beauty of an Unscripted Journey: The most fascinating career paths are rarely linear. Anastasia's academic and professional journey is a testament to the beauty of following your interests, even when the destination isn't clear. Sometimes, this meandering path leads to creating something entirely new—something that didn't exist before. Letting go of the notion that your career should follow someone else's trajectory is liberating. Each of us is meant to carve out our own way, and as we move forward the uniqueness of our path becomes more evident. So, embrace the unexpected turns and trust that your journey will lead down the road that was meant for you. ●     Transforming Tradition Through Innovation: Rice paddy cultivation has long been a symbol of timeless tradition—a picturesque image etched into collective memory. Yet, even centuries-old practices aren't immune to the transformative power of innovation. It's wild to think that after so many generations, there could be a better way to cultivate rice, a way that challenges the norm and improves upon it. That's the magic of innovation: it takes what seems fixed and familiar and reimagines it, creating something better. Whether it's rice paddies or any other deeply ingrained system, innovation reminds us that progress is always possible, and the status quo is just a starting point. Anastasia Volkova is the CEO and Co-founder of Regrow, which was named Fast Company's number one most innovative company in agriculture in 2023. They empower the world's largest brands such as Kellogg's, Cargill and General Mills to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across their supply chains. Their product began as a data and analytics offering to agronomists and farmers to help build a localized growing roadmap, identifying what crops to plant, what fertilizer and other inputs to use, how much of it to use, and an irrigation plan. By building this roadmap for growers, Regrow realized that it could then help food brands and processors have a much deeper knowledge of how the food they source is grown. Beyond expertise, Regrow's product helps companies proactively lower their supply chain emissions by incentivizing best practices across their grower network. In this conversation, Anastasia traces her journey from starting Regrow to the company it has become and discusses the agricultural practices that can make the biggest difference in emissions mitigation. The company raised a Series B of financing last year from Galvanized Climate Solutions among others, and is a leader in driving regenerative agriculture practice changes at scale. In this episode, we cover: [02:30]: Anastasia's personal climate journey[04:43]: Discovering the potential of satellite imagery for agriculture during her PhD[07:24]: Agronomists' crucial role as "crop doctors"[10:05]: Regrow's initial focus on providing agronomists with data[10:40]: How satellite imagery fits into Regrow's software[13:10]: Regrow's product evolution[15:38]: Lack of visibility as the main challenge in understanding the agri-food supply chain[17:08]: Deep dive into the nuances of Regrow's product[19:30] Regrow's business model: Brands paying farmers for emission reductions[23:48]: The agri-food industry's significant contribution (31%) to global emissions[26:52]: Key emissions factors on farms, including machinery and synthetic nitrogen fertilizers[32:08]: Topsoil degradation and the regenerative agriculture movement[39:04]: Challenges with creating a carbon credit methodology around soil organic carbon[43:41]: Systemic challenges to scaling regenerative agriculture[45:09]: The need for financing the transition to regenerative practices[47:09]: Predictions for upcoming farm bills[48:04]: What's next for Regrow[49:34]: Who Anastasia wants to hear from and career opportunities at RegrowResources mentioned:Kiss the Ground DocumentaryGet connected: Anastasia Volkova LinkedInCody Simms Twitter / LinkedInMCJ Podcast / Collective*You can also reach us via email at info@mcjcollective.com, where we encourage you to share your feedback on episodes and suggestions for future topics or guests.Episode recorded on Jun 15, 2023 (aired Jun 28, 2023)

Anastasia Volkova discusses sustainable farming, incentives for behavioural change, and  the importance of understanding the farming system when implementing regenerative agriculture. When it comes to sustainable food production, we are all responsible. The world forced farming to be this way because we wanted to support growth that is not sustainable. Regrow is the infrastructure for decision support and incentive exchange in sustainable agriculture. Regrow is working with farmers and food supply chains across over 200 million acres in 45 countries to reduce the climate impact of agriculture and improve yield resistance. I recently caught up with Anastasia Volkova, Regrow CEO and Co-Founder, to discuss the challenges, opportunities, and myths in transforming global food systems. Her deep understanding of their markets, customers, and the science guides how Regrow creates value across the whole supply chain. She explores the nuances around regenerative agriculture, which is a huge opportunity but must be applied in context. She also discussed the potential perils of limiting the sustainability conversation to carbon and overly simplifying the system. Anastasia dispels the myths that farmers are unwilling to share their data, declaring all that is needed is the right incentive. In this conversation we explore how realistic is cheap food and the why the current impact on the global food system due to the war in Ukraine should not be a surprise to those following history.
