On the morning of Tuesday, June 9, 2020, Charlotteans woke up to a bold new mural being painted on a prominent stretch of South Tryon Street that read "Black Lives Matter." Inspired by similar murals in Washington, DC and Raleigh, a group of Charlotte artists and organizers came together within a matter of hours to create their own homage to the movement. What makes Charlotte's mural unique, however, is that each letter is designed and painted by a different artist. The result is stunning. On today's episode of the Biscuit CLT Podcast, producer Andy Goh takes you on the ground to talk to the artists and organizers who made the mural happen.

This past weekend, Camp North End hosted the second annual Durag Festival, organized and hosted by BLKMRKT CLT, Dupp and Swatt and local artist Dammit Wesely. The event drew more than 2,000 attendees, all celebrating black culture and heritage. In the first segment of today’s Biscuit podcast, we talk to Dammit Wesely about what the Durag Festival means to him. We also go on location to hear some of the sound from the event and talk to attendees and local artists such as Alvin C. Jacobs and Lo’Vonia Parks. Stick around however, because we’ve also got an interview with Next Stage Consulting leader and non-profit wizard Josh Jacobson, recorded live at Coco and the Director. Many people in Charlotte see the creative energy that bounces back and forth from Creative Mornings hosts and Biscuit co-founders Matt Olin and Tim Miner. That kind of chemistry is something that takes a lot of time, work and a little luck to develop, and we believe that is something to be celebrated. That’s why we’re calling this segment Creative Besties. On each Creative Besties segment, we’ll profile a pair of creators whose collaborations enhance each person and their work as a whole. Far too often in our wonderful city, we tend to celebrate what’s new and shiny as opposed to what’s been tested through time. That’s why we’re calling this segment #OGCLT. We want to celebrate the Charlotte that’s existed long before the breweries and condos. Up first on #OGCLT? Mert’s Heart and Soul! Mert’s has been a staple of the Uptown restaurant scene since 1998. Since then it’s been known as the go to spot for authentic soul and southern food inside the 277 loop. Owners James and Renee’ Bazzelle are the husband and wife duo behind the cornbread and collard greens, and I was lucky enough to sit down with James one morning before lunch service. In this segment of #OGCLT, James will tell us about the origins of Mert’s, and the significant role Hugh McColl personally played in bringing Mert’s to its current location on College Street. James talks about the food of Mert’s, how he originally didn’t like cornbread and what happened to change his mind. Finally, don’t miss what James has to say about what his hopes are for the city of Charlotte at the end of the interview. The Biscuit Podcast is produced by Tim Miner, Matt Olin and Andy Goh. We've got big news for you: Final Round Radio is going on the road! Well at least KB is. With Winn Seltzer and Philo Brathwaite. You read that right, KB is going to be touring the country in an RV in 2017 with a Charlotte disc golfer and one of the top touring pros on the circuit. That means that we've got some shoes to fill here in the Queen City.  That's where former Final Round Radio guests "Big Wave" Dave George and Pat "PDB" Bowles come in. They're going to be stepping in for KB as co-hosts (along with Andy Goh) for Final Round Radio East. Kevin "K Squared" Keith will also be working the Texas audience with FRR Central recording in Dallas, TX, so that makes three different (but similar) versions of Final Round Radio that will be coming to you in 2017. This is certainly not something that we've done before, but we feel this is the best way to bring the show to you this year.  In Episode 62, you'll hear from Dave and Pat about what they will bring to the show, while KB talks about why he decided to make the jump into touring.
