This month Luminocity is spotlighting Heal Charlotte, holistically addressing real issues in Charlotte, one community at a time.Founder, Greg Jackson, shares how the police shooting of Keith Lamont Scott in September 2016 changed his life. Shortly after the shooting, Greg showed up with others to protest the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department at its headquarters the day after the shooting but says a crucial conversation that day changed his trajectory, leading to the formation of Heal Charlotte. In addition to helping community members with food distribution, emergency housing, and youth development, Heal Charlotte is now embarking on their most ambitious project to date by launching a $10 million capital campaign to transform a neglected motel into an affordable housing campus on Reagan Drive. They believe this is chance to tackle the systemic inequities perpetuated by the city’s affordable housing crisis. By acquiring and managing their own property, the willl be able to centralize and expand their operation in order to serve a larger population. In addition to housing, the future Heal Charlotte campus will provide residents with food, ongoing mentorship and case managers to assist in transitioning out of the facility. On today's episode, we meet with Kristine Kaoverii Weber, who created the program "Yoga Ethics for Transforming Racism" with Kiesha Battles. Kristine is an internationally recognized Yoga Therapist and Yoga Teacher trainer who has presented internationally and founder of the Subtle Yoga, the first training for behavioral health professionals in the country. Kristine has trained thousands of people around the world since 2003. Her journey with Yoga began in middle school when she joined the "Yoga Club" that one of her teacher's provided. She remembers the transformational experience she had. Yoga continued to be a constant in her life when she moved to Washington, D.C to San Francisco, and on to Japan to teach English. From there, she was drawn to explore Yoga even more and decided to tour India for 2 years. After her experiences in Ashrams and with her teachers, she knew she had to share what she learned to those struggling with mental health upon returning to the States. Subtle Yoga was born in 2006 and in 2009, she began presenting at the Mountain Area Health Education Center in Asheville. Kristine is married to a Licensed Clinical Social Worker/Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist so many of their conversations have centered around the intersection of Yoga and Mental Health. Back then, Yoga wasn't as trauma-informed as it is today and she found a niche in training Mental Health professional Yoga to bring to their clients. In 2012, she started her first 200-hour training that was also supported by a major continuing education provider. She continued to find how powerful it was to put Yoga training in the hands of professionals who were already trauma-informed and had strong ethics. It has been her mission to bring more professionalism to Yoga. She began offering courses online 2 years ago and her reach continues to broaden. Kristine's Subtle Yoga is accessible, person-centered, low-risk, and low-cost as an intervention. It can be applied in a therapy space, Yoga studio, gym, etc. One of her teacher's, Gary Kraftsow(Viniyoga), has influenced her development of Subtle Yoga. There are lots of repeated poses and moving with the breath. Kristine thinks about sequencing poses in regards to the nervous system. "I think about my sequencing in terms of where do we want to take the nervous system; do we want to go in the direction of energy and nourishment, do we need to stimulate the system a little bit, do we need to go in the direction of letting go and lightening or helping folx to feel more relaxed." Fast forward to 2016, Kristine was asked to speak at an Integrative Health Conference in Charlotte, NC right after Keith Lamont Scott was murdered. She found that no one was talking about the protests and what was happening right outside the conference. She decided to speak to social, economic, and environmental determinants of health that account for the majority of health outcomes. "I've felt very passionate about social justice for a long time and I see it as intimately connected to the Yoga process." Earlier in 2020 when the Black Lives Matter movement gained momentum, Kristine reached out to Kiesha Battles, a former student of hers, and asked if she would be willing to collaborate on a course regarding racism as viewed from the lens of the Yamas and Niyamas, the yoga ethical principles. "Where they really shine is when you operationalize them and you think about them in terms of a particular problem, in this case racism, and then really how do I use these ethics to take right action in the world?" In her career, Kristine has been influenced by Gary Kraftsow, the founder of Viniyoga, Susan Andrews, a Yoga teacher in Brazil, Gabor Mate's book "In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts," Bessel Van Der Kolk's book, "The Body Keeps the Score," Barbara Frederickson's book, "Love 2.0," and her husband Brett Sculthorp. In Charlotte, Kristine is inspired by Kiesha Battles, a Yoga Instructor, Samantha Leonard of Davidson Yoga Therapy, Sherry Lyerly Tarner, of Pure Wellness and Healing, all of the owners of Yoga Studios navigating COVID-19, and Dr. Lisette Holland, a Physical Therapist. Kristine wants to help others heal because she has received so much from Yoga and for her, there is no other choice but to give it back. Her advice to those seeking healing is to find a good therapist and trust yourself. Find more about her program, "Yoga Ethics for Transforming Racism."

Today, we have the pleasure of meeting Reia Chapman, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She is the founder and an outpatient therapist at The Center for Family and Maternal Wellness, founder of the Social Justice Emotional Response Collective, and an inspiring writer and content creator for Decolonize Psychotherapy. She has a strong background in reproductive health rights and justice and regularly engages in public speaking and keynote engagements as well as facilitates trainings and workshops. She received her Master's degree from Savannah State University and moved back to Charlotte to work in crisis intervention community services. She found the work to be challenging due to the bureaucracy. She discovered that her clients and families were not responding well to the service because it did not center their needs. She recognized the disconnect between the policies, laws, and rules to culture, poverty, and intersections. At this point, she realized that graduate school did not prepare her to work in marginalized communities. Since then, she has found that many in the mental health profession are unaware of the background of racism that makes us complicit in the suffering of people. This awareness informs her work with Decolonize Psychotherapy. With this series, she helps address the academic and education sector as well as corporate sector with workshops based on what the need is now to retain staff of color, how to create spaces that are safe, and protocols that could help clients feel seen. "It is the work that I love to do. I love direct practice work and I think as I've evolved as a clinician, I've seen a greater need for me to contribute to the discourse and to the profession in ways that inspire and mold the next generation of Social Workers." Reia's private practice, The Center for Family and Maternal Wellness, opened in 2016 and has great racial and gender diversity, helping those with mood and anxiety disorders, perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, couples therapy, and support for Queer and Transgender populations. Her work with the Social Justice Emotional Response Collective officially solidified in 2016 after the murder of Keith Lamont Scott in Charlotte, but had it's beginnings when she was organizing emotional support efforts in Ferguson, MO after the death of Mike Brown. Reia was in Alaska during the uprising in Charlotte and kept wondering who was responding to the emotional needs of the community. "I remember looking at the news and imagining the trauma that these folx must be experiencing when they were facing huge militarized police force. I thought about what it was like to be gassed or dogs to be used on people. I thought about seeing tanks and being hosed and I thought 'what would that do to a person's psyche?" The works she does with SJERC is an act of resistance for her and an act of love and deep respect for the community. SJERC is a mental health mutual aid program which reconvened after the death of George Floyd. During this response, the Collective has added a 24/7 hotline staffed by mental health clinicians, created a website to submit appointment requests and donations, and increased visibility with lime green t-shirts. They have connected with other organizers such as Jail Support. The Collective has continued to offer professionals in the wellness space a place to donate their time to help those who are protesting as well as pro-bono services to those who need emergency emotional support. Alisa Roth's book, "Insane: America's Criminal Treatment of Mental Illness" has been influential in her work with SJERC. Reia wants to heal Charlotte because she recognizes she does not have a choice in the matter. Since childhood, she was the one who people came to for support, guidance, comfort, and love as well as her fight for others her entire life. She cannot separate herself from healing. In the Charlotte community, she is inspired by many including Kass Ottley and Kristie Puckett Williams at Jail Support as well as the content creators and writers who are documenting the story. She continues to be inspired by those who have found ways to forgive and have difficult conversations to push past their pain to educate. Find the Social Justice Emotional Response Collective on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, or call the hotline at 704-659-4997.

What You'll Hear: Greg became a Christian at a young age with the guidance of his mother. He later spent a year in jail, where he learned more about God He reverted to his old ways, and about 3 years ago he rededicated his life to Christ and got baptized and hasn't looked back He's been rapping since age 12 and was rapping for the world. His grandmother said you better have a backup plan, so he went to the Art Institute of New York and worked at several restaurants in Charlotte as a sous chef On September 23, 2016, Keith Lamont Scott was shot by Charlotte police.  He had some mental issues and didn't take his medicine that day. Greg saw young men and women standing on top of cop cars and throwing rocks at police.  Police were shooting tear gas. Greg wanted to show his younger brother how to act with self control The next day he went downtown with his friend.  People were doing a silent protest, which Greg was against along with riots. They led the group to march to the police department and protested for 7 days. A police officer extended a hand shake to him and invited him to learn more about police training.  Greg met Sheriff McFadden who was also an African American.  He asked Greg 3 questions 1. Do you know what justice is? 2. Have you ever seen justice? 3. Do you know what justice looks like if you've seen it. He answered no and things changed. A protestor was shot by another protestor. Greg realized he hadn't sowed any seeds in his community and didn't deserve to be there protesting He and a friend started Heal Charlotte to build bridges in the community They went to a transparency workshop, created by the CMPD. They created The Constructive Conversational Training to help officers.  75 officers went through the training. Police started looking at people as advocates for the community They've had a Thanksgiving dinner and started an after school program in the neighborhood Greg lived in with the help of his property manager "There are heavenly creatures in this city that have been connected to the vine of God" They've had a 17% crime decrease in his neighborhood They have a CMPD Tuesday day where the cops come and talk to the kids His community feels safe and they feel served Emergency calls have gone from 77 to 7 a week Their new  mission is a place based organization that focuses on neighborhood revitalization  They have a heal a home project They want to be allies and mentors and servants of the Kingdom In Charlotte there's a church on every corner, but they need more servants in the community The church is responsible and has a duty to walk with the imperfect The denominations and separations is hurting us Greg loves cross worship, the blessing of Abraham is upon us due to the level of our faith not our skin color Identity yourself by the impact you make in the world and what you do for the Lord African-Americans have a wall that doesn't allow others to get over it.  Everyone should put their wall down.  There needs to be a trust so people can work together. We're trying to save ourselves from something, when we all need each other. I had to trust in the Lord that He would not lead me astray, and that helped me trust a lot of people We can no longer plan to help somebody from a birds-eye view Everybody is impatient and inconsistent from the black-side to the white-side Contact www.healcharlotte.org

Gord is also graphic artist and comic book author who most recently published The Antifa Comic Book, out from Arsenal Pulp Press, and runs the website Warrior Publications and sometimes publishes under the nom-de-plume of ZigZag. For the hour we speak about his writings documenting indigenous resistance history in the so-called Americas (mostly with a focus on Turtle Island), antifascist organizing, intersections of indigenous struggle and anarchism and critiques of Pacifism (see Gord's “Smash Pacifism” zine). Some of the points of resistance that we cover include Elsipogtog (Elsipogtog in 5 Minutes video at sub.media), Idle No More, The Oka Crisis (“The Oka Crisis in 5 Minutes” video at sub.media), Stoney Point/Aazhoodena (another 5 minutes video by Gord), Gustafsen Lake (we didn't talk about but another 5 minute video), the Zapatista Rebellion and the Unist'ot'en Camp resistance to pipelines in so-called B.C. (Sean Swain at 3min 55sec, Gord Hill at 11min 27sec, announces at 57min 29sec) Rayquan Borum Trial Update In a brief and sad update to last week's interview on the case of Rayquan Borum, we'd like to read a statement from the fedbook page for Charlotte Uprising: We are deeply saddened to report that Rayquan Borum has been found guilty of possession of a firearm and second degree murder with him being sentenced to 25/26 years in a cage. We knew it would be difficult to receive a fair trial in the same court that allowed Officer Randall Kerrick to walk free for the murder of unarmed Jonathan Ferrell. We know the police will continue to kill Black and brown folks and escape accountability. We suffered extreme suppression from the judge from the start of the trial. Even though the medical examiner testified there was a 51% chance that ANYTHING else killed Justin Carr, Judge Hayes would not allow any testimony naming the police. Of course, it is far easier to scapegoat a random Black man than to launch an investigation into the same police force that killed ONLY Black people in 2015. We also know that Justin Carr would be alive were it not for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department murder of Keith Lamont Scott (no trial for that officer, of course). We know that the Mecklenburg County Courts disproportionately sentence Black and brown bodies to time in cages. We know that CMPD disproportionately arrests Black and brown folks. Black people are 30% of Charlotte's population and make up about 70% of the jail population. Heinous. We know that this is the American Way. In response, we will continue to rise up and resist this colonized nation and work toward building a more decolonized world, for all of us. The uprising was as follows: prisoners took over Building C at the Vaughn prison in Smyrna, Delaware, and took three prison guards and one prison counselor hostage. Demands issued during the hostage standoff included that Delaware Governor John Carney investigate poor living conditions at the facility. One correctional officer who was taken hostage, Steven Floyd, would later be found dead after police re-entered the facility. The case can be followed at vaughn17support.org as it enters it's third trial group. A few words from the support site note the continued repression of some of the court-exonerated prisoners: The State of Delaware retaliated against defendants in the Vaughn uprising trial last week, by moving them out of state to Pennsylvania. Kevin Berry, Abednego Baynes, Obadiah Miller, Johnny Bramble, Dwayne Staats, and Jarreau Ayers were all transferred to solitary confinement at SCI Camp Hill, a maximum security facility. They joined Deric Forney, who was transferred weeks earlier in January. Berry, Baynes, and Forney have all been fully acquitted on all charges. “It's unusual to move prisoners with short terms left in their sentence out of state,” said Fariha Huriya, an organizer working closely with Vaughn 17 prisoners. “They're being held in solitary confinement, with no showers, no access to commissary, and limited phone calls. It's the same inhumane conditions that they faced at James T. Vaughn.” “The State's vindictiveness will cost them,” said Betty Rothstein, who also organizes with the prisoners. “The Vaughn 17 have resisted these charges, and will continue to resist and expose the corruption of the DOC and abuse on prisoners.” There are nine defendants who are still awaiting trial. New trial dates for groups 3 and 4 are scheduled for May 6th, 2019, and October 21st, 2019. . ... . .. Playlist

This week, we feature two segments on the show: an interview with a Russian anarchist about the recent ramping up of torture and repression by the FSB in Russia against anarchists and anti-fascists  (00:14:13); and a chat with Patrick Strickland, author of "Alerta! Alerta!: Snapshots of Europe's Anti-Fascist Struggle” (00:34:17); plus anarchist prisoner Sean Swain on his bid to "Build The Wall" (00:08:27) FSB Torture of Radicals First up, Bursts spoke with Tania, a Russian anarchist, a member of the crew who runs the RUpression website documenting Russian state agencies like the FSB's use of torture to extract stories to build conspiracies to legitimize their tightening of restrictions on public gatherings, chill the political and media landscape, and sustain a state of sense of fear among the populace. We discuss the death of Mikhail Zhlobitsky in a bombing of an FSB office in October, the current state of anarchist organizing in Russia, and the past political repression since 2012 and the cases in Pensa and the 2017 "The Network" conspiracy case (which we've spoken of in this show in the past here and here). In February 2019, a situation unfolded where Azat Miftakhov disappeared, came back tortured, and accused of taking part in an anarchist terrorist plot. Azat was released by court order only to be re-arrested by another police agency (well documented in this crimethInc article, alongside some downloadable posters for pasting around your town). You can learn more about the case by reading and following rupression.com Patrick Strickland on European Anti-Fascism Secondly, William had the chance to interview Patrick Strickland, who is a journalist and author, about his recently released book "Alerta! Alerta! Snapshots of Europe's Anti-Fascist Struggle". This book follows the stories and lives of 5 European people who do broadly defined antifascist work or struggle. For this interview we talk about Strickland's journalism, the experiences of compiling this book, and about understanding elements on the far right that might enhance antifascism, in the so called US, Europe, and elsewhere. Follow him on Twitter @P_Strickland_ for news and upcoming projects! Announcements Show Up For Rayquan Borum! If you are in Charlotte NC tomorrow, Monday the 11th, consider showing up to support Rayquan Borum, who is a Black activist arrested during the Charlotte Uprising, a days long protest to mourn and rage against the police murder of Keith Lamont Scott in 2016. From charlotteuprising.com/statement : "The uprising in Charlotte is a direct response to sustained police and vigilante violence against Black people in this city and across the country: Keith Lamont Scott, Jonathan Ferrell, Aiyana Stanley, Jones, Tyre King, Korryn Gaines, Janisha Fonville, Terence Crutcher and so many more. These are names of victims we know and deeply mourn, understanding there are so many other people who have been unnecessarily taken from us." The arrest of Rayquan Borum was a direct attempt by police to frame Mr. Borum, and he is finally going to trial after 2 years being held in and out of solitary confinement. The trial will be held starts February 11th, and will start at 9:30am in room 5370 at the address 832 East Fourth Street Charlotte, NC, which is the Mecklenburg County Courthouse. You can follow the Charlotte Uprising on twitter, facebook, and tumblr for more ways to get involved and support the folks facing ongoing repression from the Uprising. And here is a link to a useful court support quicksheet made specifically for this trial! Court solidarity needs for Rayquan are ongoing, so plug in when you can. Federal Prison Postal Changes Survey Lawyers & activists doing prisoner support have been concerned with new Federal Bureau of Prisons' rules limiting the type of mail people in prison can receive -- for example, rules that people in federal prison can only get white paper / envelopes, and no cards or drawings.   There is work being done to look into what is going on across the country on this issue. If you have heard anything, they'd love to hear about it.  They are also trying to collect evidence of what is happening at all the different federal facilities.  If you have any of the following (or if you feel comfortable asking for any of these types of things from people in prison you are in contact with), that would be super helpful, including:    Any memos from federal prisons detailing new mail restrictions Any program statements from BoP detailing new mail restrictions Any Institutional Supplements from BoP detailing new mail restrictions Scans of federal mail rejections based on new restrictions (color of letter, color of envelope, use of mailing label, greeting card etc) Scans of envelopes with rejected stickers detailing reason for rejection Scans of grievances from prisoners regarding the mail restrictions If you are interested in potentially working with us around this issue, let the folks at Certain Days Calendar know, and they can reach out with info about their next meeting. Get in touch at: info@certaindays.org Free Tibet celebration in Scotland and around the world If you're listening in Edinburgh, Scotland, there'll be a March on Sunday March 10 from The Mound in support of 60th anniversary of the Tibetan Uprising to the invasion and occupation by the Chinese communist regime forces. Keep listening after the final episode for some events we want to feature. Evictions on la ZAD Some months ago in January of this year, it was announced that the French government was abandoning the airport construction in Notre Dame Des Landes. As many listeners know, the defense project which is known world wide as the ZAD (Zone a Defendre or Defended Zone) has been the decades long collaboration between anarchists and anti authoritarians with farmers who have lived on the land for generations. In that time, the ZAD has become more than a defense project, it has evolved into a vibrant community with its own unique infrastructure, home to many people from many experiences and unregulated by the government. This morning we got word that evictions are scheduled to be underway on the ZAD starting tomorrow. It may come as no surprise that the original decision to abandon the airport did not come without its own price tag, and conditions stipulating the boundaries and terms of continued occupation were leveled at residents. These conditions were a clear attempt on the part of the French government to regulate this community of resistance through manipulation and back channels, it was seen as such and people on the ZAD began preparing for eviction. There are currently 2500 riot police on the ZAD itself, with 1500 more standing by in nearby cities, and the much photographed barricade road has been taken by the police. What is not currently clear is how the international community can help materially. This situation is still unfolding, and we are sure that there will be explicit calls for aid and for solidarity in days and weeks to come. What is clear us is that the government feels the threat of intentional communities very sharply, feels threatened by communities and trends it cannot control. We have seen it time and time again from ZAD to Standing Rock to resistance to the Mountain Valley Pipeline: what does it say about government when a group of people defending the land provokes such an extreme response? We think there is something worth exploring here however it makes sense, with whatever tools you and your community may have. To learn more about the ZAD, you can visit http://zad.nadir.org To hear interviews that The Final Straw has conducted about this topic over the years, you can visit our website. Stay tuned to your favorite anarchist news sources for updates and further analysis on this situation! Black Greeks Empower White Colleges toward Racial Reconciliation – Michelle Guobadia of UNC Charlotte Explains

Blacks with Power| Make America Great through Black Power

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 30, 2017 38:45

For Black Greeks, there's always a light-hearted discussion about where it's better to be made: at an HBCU or a PWI (Predominantly White Institution). And having experienced both institutions, I can see the merits of both. There are things that can be done at a one that cannot be done at the other. For White Colleges, Racial Reconciliation is a huge one of those things... With very few White students at HBCUs, it's difficult to engage across color lines within the collegiate setting. However, Black Greeks at White Colleges have an opportunity to develop their ability to confront the White power structure while they're still in school. There's a great deal of value to that. Black Greeks could use the Alumni Support If members of NPHC (Black Greek) organizations are going to be effective at speaking truth to power, they will need the support of those who've crossed before them and are now established in their careers. We all know, systems of White power don't do well at listening to Black people. Jane Black student is likely disbelieved when she challenges John White student. And racial reconciliation cannot happen in that disbelief and prejudice. Because of the bond that is shared by Black Greeks, and because in nearly every town there is at least one highly respected Black person who is a member of an NPHC organization, there's great potential for bringing notable voices into the discussion - simply on the strength of "the Shield." How are you giving young men and women "on the yard" access to your expertise? When you hear about the things being done in Greek Life at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, this question is brought into deeper focus. When great work is being done, there's always a demand for more! And I think you'll be fascinated by the level of engagement being coached by Michele Guobadia, Director for Fraternity and Sorority Life, on a college campus that was literally blocks from where Keith Lamont Scott was killed by police. More support from Black Alumni would help bolster programming at a critical time in American race relations. Moreover, the support and mentorship is invaluable as men and women on campus learn to navigate issues of race while remaining committed to those reasons for pledging in the first place. So, in this episode of Blacks with Power, Michelle shares some of the things that have happened under her leadership. We talk about how Black Greeks in particular are engaging discussions on racial reconciliation that are lifting the entire Greek Community on campus...and how - working together - White & Black Greeks are strengthening relationships and encouraging deeper bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood across organizations and color lines. She even challenged me to get off the sidelines and connect with Black Greeks at the College in my area! Now, what do you think of the work being done at UNC-Charlotte? Do you agree with Michelle's vision? And what from this discussion has shaped the way you engage? We'd love to hear your thoughts... In the month of February 2017, Stephen Roach composed and posted a new poem each day of the month. These poems were written in response to the "artless and often contemptible mood" found within social media. Stephen set out to offer "choreography instead of industry", beauty instead of hostility and to place "a carnation in the barrels of loaded guns".  In observance of National Poetry Month, Stephen shares several of his poems from this collection of writings featuring music by Timbre, Songs of Water, Loudharp and Brandon Willet. #poetryismyprotest  Joining Stephen in this episode is artist, Melina Daniels of Overflow Studios in Boone, NC. Melina shares a story of how she and her husband Jacob responded to the 2016 Charlotte protests surrounding the shooting of Keith Lamont Scott by setting up an outdoor art studio in the midst of the uprising.  Poetry is a vehicle of transcendence and social change. It is both protest and praise, a means of lifting the spirit and calling for action. In this episode, Stephen turns to the “ancient and analog” art of poetry as a means of response to the current challenges of our day. **Special thanks goes out to Timbre, Loudharp, Songs of Water, and Brandon Willet for providing musical landscapes accompanying the poetry of this episode. Also, a special thanks to Elisa Cox, Eloise Corlett, Catherine Mi-Sook Roemer and Sarah Roach for voiceover contributions. You can purchase a copy of Stephen's February poems at: stephenroach.org

The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly Compensatory Call-In. We encourage non-white listeners to dial in with their codified concepts, new terms, observations, research findings, workplace problems or triumphs, and/or suggestions on how best to Replace White Supremacy With Justice ASAP. We'll use these sessions to hone our use of words as tools to reveal truth, neutralize White people. We'll examine news reports from the past seven days and - hopefully - promote a constructive dialog. #ANTIBLACKNESS After the death of Cuban leader and international icon Fidel Castro, pundits and heads of state have devoted a week to dissecting Castro's life and times. President-elect Donald Trump labeled Castro a "brutal dictator," while Soledad O'Brien recounted her Cuban mother's memories of Castro's callous and vindictive rule. Jesse Jackson Sr. and Mumia Abu-Jamal recalled Castro's military support of the anti-apartheid effort in South Africa, offer of medical aid during Hurricane Katrina, the safe haven provided to former Black Panther Assata Shakur, and his rendezvous with Minister Malcolm X during his 1960 visit to the United States. Calls to scold the deceased Cuban leader for his acts of brutality seem particularly ironic on this week, when Mecklenburg District Attorney Andrew Murray announced that no charges would be filed for the killing of Keith Lamont Scott. Murray used the occasion to reprimand reckless negro use of social media. Simultaneously and further south, the Walter Scott murder trial is being deliberated by the jury. South Carolina police officer Michael Slager waits to see if he too will be exonerated for extinguishing a black life. Fellow South Carolinian Dylann Storm Roof will represent himself in his death penalty case for the 2015 terrorist attack on Mother Emanuel AME. #AnswersForMiriamCarey INVEST in The COWS - http://paypal.me/GusTRenegade CALL IN NUMBER: 641.715.3640 CODE 564943# The C.O.W.S. archives: http://tiny.cc/76f6p

Truth Foretold, Specious Journalism, And Spurious Assertions:The Case of Jonathan Bernstein, Bloomberg View, and The Charlotte Observer While it is true that I was “booted” by pro-war Democrats who worked in concert with like-minded Republicans, your assertion of my being booted for “peddling conspiracies” deserves a deeper look. My booting, by the way, resulted in the GOP takeover of my home State of Georgia, an outcome that seemingly makes both pro-war Democrats and Republicans (now called “globalists”) comfortable. Therefore, I want to take a deeper look at what I did “peddle:” 1. That Presidential candidate George W. Bush worked with his Florida Governor brother, Jeb, to orchestrate election theft in the 2000 Presidential election. Now that the public has caught up with the facts that I put on the table in 2000 and 2001 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdPhXuTzQeI), this position is supported by evidence that is available to all;2. That President George W. Bush received warnings about an impending attack on the US (http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2015/11/cia-directors-documentary-911-bush-213353) and actively blocked an investigation (http://edition.cnn.com/2002/ALLPOLITICS/01/29/inv.terror.probe/) into the September 11, 2001 attacks. Now that the public has caught up with the facts that I put on the table in 2001, this position is supported by evidence that is available to all;3. That the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund (https://www.vcf.gov/faq.html) was really set up to thwart 9/11 wrongful death lawsuits because it prevented victims' survivors from getting justice in US Courts; I felt that victims and victims' survivors should be able to sue the culprits as well as receive support from the Fund. The President recently vetoed legislation that would allow lawsuits to move forward against Saudi Arabia and Congress just overrode his veto. Fourteen years later, I am pleased that, once again, my position has been supported by evidence that has been clearly available to all for at least a decade;4. That the US was not justified in attacking Iraq in 2003. The most thorough investigation into the 2003 decision to go to war against Iraq is the Chilcot Report (http://www.iraqinquiry.org.uk/the-report/) which found that war was not the last option and that U.S. allegations of Saddam Hussein possessing weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in Iraq were not justified. Now that the public has caught up with the facts that I put on the table in 2002, this position is supported by evidence that is available to all;5. That the then-Secretary of Homeland Security, Michael Chertoff, failed to perform his job during Hurricane Katrina and that thousands needlessly died because he failed the Gulf States and the country. After joining with Republicans and writing a Congressional Report on the subject that is available to the public (www.nola.com/katrina/pdf/mainreport.pdf), my position is supported by evidence that is available to all;6. That a specific allegation had been made to my Congressional Office that thousands of bodies had been dumped in Louisiana swamps after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Now, we know that 9/11 human remains were dumped in a landfill (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/29/us/panel-recommends-more-oversight-and-training-at-dover-mortuary.html?_r=0) with such action having been deemed “dereliction of duty,” so who has conducted an independent investigation into what happened in Louisiana, in particular, with respect to body disposal?7. That racism exists in Capitol Hill Police Department similar to what exists in other police departments around the U.S. and that I was a victim of that discrimination after I supported a lawsuit filed by Black police officers after one of their superior officers used the word “nigger.” Black police officers have been waiting fifteen years for justice and recently held a demonstration in support of their claim (http://www.rollcall.com/news/policy/former-capitol-police-call-attention-discrimination-lawsuits). One need only hear the moving testimony of the U.S. Senate's lone Black GOP Member and his interactions with the Capitol Hill Police (http://thehill.com/blogs/floor-action/floor-speeches/tim-scott-black-republican-emotional-powerful-dramatic-race-speech-targeted-capitol-police) to understand that my experience was surely possible. Now, again—after the fact— that the public has caught up with the evidence that I put on the table in 2006, my position is supported by evidence that is available to all, sadly now most of all, the family of Keith Lamont Scott and all of those young people who were just recently in Charlotte's streets. If only the press had decided to investigate my assertions rather than castigate me for making them! Maybe things would be far different than they are today in Iraq, Libya, Louisiana, and elsewhere. But, instead of investigation of the inconvenient or unpleasant facts that I repeatedly put on the table, the response was a frenzy of specious journalism and spurious assertions where true journalism was needed. Your column, with mention of my name, is an example of that. Such “reporting” is precisely why Trump's attacks on the media resonate so well with the American and global public. The polling data on the public perception of the U.S. media is a damning indictment of the role the media has played in this country for too many years. That is why the U.S. public more and more now seeks its information from foreign media outlets, the internet, “alternative” media, and less and less from “newspapers” like yours. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement

This week we'll be rebroadcasting a recent update from A-Radio Berlin on the repression called Operation Fenix in Czech Republic against anarchists there.  Following that, we'll hear some music from Wildspeaker, Cara Neir and Allochiria. First, text from the intro to the A-Radio Portion:     "In the context of the International Week of Solidarity with Anarchist Prisoners (23.-30th of August 2016), we had the opportunity of talking to a comrade from Anarchist Black Cross (ABC) in Czech Republic. The interview gives a short summary of the repression that started in 2015 and explains the singular cases and their current development, but deals also with the problems the movement had in the beginning to show solidarity. Last but not least, you get very good advice on the topic of solidarity and what to do yourselves. Since the interview, another comrade is in prison. Lukáš Borl, who had been living underground, has been arrested by the police on September 4." More info on the case at https://antifenix.noblogs.org/ Announcements Strike Updates This was a statement originally posted to itsgoingdown.org, which we have shortened for broadcasting. It pertains to updates on the September 9th prison strike, with some thoughts about how to move forward from here. For more such thoughts, you can check out the most recent IGD cast which includes interviews with IWOC organizers and resisting prisoners in Merced, CA. One thing is not in question: September 9th is now officially the largest prison work strike ever to take place within the United States. This strike against prison slavery that began on September 9th, the 45th anniversary of the Attica prison uprising has now entered it's third week. According to organizers with Support Prisoner Resistance:     "As of 9/21 we have tracked 46 prisons and jails that experienced some kind of disruption between September 8 and 21st. This total includes both lockdowns reported by officials (some of whom deny that the lockdown was protest related) and reports of protests from prisoners and supporters (some of which did not lead to lockdowns or full strikes).    Of these, 31 facilities experienced a lock-down, suspension or full strike for at least 24 hours. Those 31 facilities house approximately 57,000 people. That is a guess at the minimum number of prisoners affected by the nationally coordinated strike.     There is likely much more going on behind the prison gates that we do not yet know about. We receive new information on a daily basis. In some places the strike lasted a day or a weekend, but in some, it seems to be going strong 12 days in." The strike has also grown out of the original expectations of many organizers. For instance, the strike has spread into both men and women's prisons, into county jails, and has lead to not only work strikes, but hunger strikes, organized marches and protests inside facilities, expanded communication of prisoners to the outside, and full fledged uprisings. Despite a media blackout that is fueled by the advertising of corporations that make billions from prison slavery while the mainstream press drones on about politicians which vow to only expand it – the strike is only continuing and bringing more people into our networks. On the outside, thousands of people took to the streets. In Durham, NC and Brooklyn, NY, freeways were blocked. In Oakland, corporations profiting from prison labor were attacked. In Portland, streets and stores profiting from prison labor were occupied and shut down. In Austin, people shut down a facility showcasing products made by prisoners, and demonstrations, marches, and rallies were organized throughout the South. Across the US, noise demonstrations outside of prisons were organized, marches were held, and graffiti, banners, and posters were placed around the walls, freeways, and towns and cities of the US. Across the world, people also took action in solidarity with the prison strike. From Serbia to Sweden, Greece to Australia, Mexico to Spain, people released statements of solidarity, held demonstrations outside of prisons, and took action against corporations that profit from prison slavery. Moving Forward: In order to proceed, people need to develop a strategy around supporting the strike. This means figuring out if and how you can support a facility near you taking action, how you can link up and build connections with prisoners, how you could build up your organization or crew to carry out this activity, and also how you could carry out actions which push forward the strike. 1.) Support the Strikers:     Holding a demonstration outside of the facility.     Holding a demonstration outside of a corporation connected to prison labor in solidarity with the strike (especially if that is what the prisoners are working to create).     Hold a call-in campaign to the prison to demand that the prison meet the prisoners demands and end repressive measures against them.     Hold a letter writing night to make contact with the prisoners. Contact IWOC for more information if you have no established contacts.     Hold a fundraiser for established groups such as the Free Ohio Movement or the Free Alabama Movement. Remember prisoners are the front lines of this struggle. We must support them and their activity as well! 2.) Build your Squad:     Raising money so you can continue or begin to engage in prison support work.     Host a letter writing night to better connect with prisoners already engaged in action.     Host a call-in event with a prisoner who can discuss the conditions that exist where they are striking and how people on the outside can support them. Contact IWOC for more details.     Host a speaker, Skype presenter, or open discussion on the strike to move people from passive support to active participation. Plug people into the organizing and get them involved.     Organize a BBQ or social event where people discuss the strike, update people on what is happening, and read off actions and communiques. 3) Keep it Lit:     Organize a noise demonstration outside a facility taking action or one closest to you.     Organize and take action at a corporation profiting from prison slavery. Get creative!     Drop a banner in solidarity with the prison strike.     Organize a night of wheat-pasting flyers. Get people together and go out on the town and put up posters and flyers supporting the strike. Write graffiti and drop banners. Already, our comrades across the world are standing with us in solidarity. In a statement released by the ABC Solidarity Cell in Greece, they have called for international supporters to also take action in support of the ongoing strike on October 1st. The September 9th strike has been inspiring, but to stop now and simply step back and wait for the next eruption would be to loose out on bringing new people into our movement. To also stop taking action now when prisoners across the US are still on strike, still on hunger strike, and still risking their lives would be to betray everything that they have worked for. Now is the time to build. Now is the time to grow. But it is definitely not the time to stop. Repression at WCW Women's prison in Gig Harbor, WA To support prisoner resistance, from an anonymous prison staff in the state of Washington:      “I would like you and supporters to know that there was a symbolic protest at Washington Correctional Center for Women in Gig Harbor on September 9. Three women refused to go to work in the prison library. The emergency response team was dispatched and the women were taken to Segregation. At their hearing last week, they were given 20 days in seg, and are facing reclassification and probably the loss of their jobs. In my opinion, this was a peaceful, non-violent expression of their opinions meant to draw attention to the issue of prison labor, and the response was much more disruptive than the event itself. The library has been closed since September 9. According to DOC, this was the only action in the entire state of Washington.” Support for Amir Davis, Kinetic's Son In March of this year, the son of Kinetik was accused of stabbing Warden Davenport at Holman prison in Alabama. He was then shipped to Donaldson. He has since been assaulted, harassed, and tortured in Solitary Confinement. If you support FAM and the work we do then let Kinetik's Sun know his sacrifices for change were not in vain. Those willing, drop him a postcard and those able, put a small donation on his books via the ADOC website. The mainstream media coverage of these events has been predictably terrible, following all the racist tropes we have come to expect from the likes of CNN and FOX. With an aim to combat these narratives, we at The Final Straw would like to put out a call for submissions or interviews that people would like to see broadcast on this show. Any interviews would be done from an explicitely anarchist perspective. However the national media referred to criminal rioters as protesters. Who stands to gain in the aftermath of such violence?

Racial tensions in America have peaked once again following the police killings of two unarmed black men, Terence Crutcher in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Keith Lamont Scott in Charlotte, North Carolina. As a result, demonstrations have erupted across the country, while violent riots broke out in Charlotte. Reacting to the civil unrest, Donald Trump told Fox News that there is “a lack of spirit between the white and the black,” adding that our country is “very divided” and “getting worse.” During a round table discussion, we addressed the racial divide between people of color and white people, as well as the #BlackLivesMatter movement vs the #AllLivesMatter movement.

#ANTIBLACKNESS The summer of 2016 closed with terrorist attacks reported in New York City, New Jersey, and St. Cloud, Minnesota. Ahmad Khan Rahami engaged in a shootout with enforcement officials before being captured alive; he's a primary suspect in New York's Chelsea explosions over the weekend. Presidential hopeful Donald J. Trump blamed "political correctness" and reminded citizens that these attacks are possible because of weak immigration laws - which he will correct if elected. Ongoing terrorism against black people continued with the shooting death of Keith Lamont Scott in Charlotte, North Carolina. The 21st century Racist script dictates that whenever possible, showcase a prominent black enforcement official to deflect allegations of White tyranny. Charlotte Police Chief Kerr Putney (black male) has been front and center maintaining that Scott was armed and killed by a black officer. Both of these claims have been disputed by eye witness testimony - there's even a White witness reporting that a White officer executed Scott. Protests in Charlotte have raged throughout the week, and some black people are proposing a complete economic boycott in Charlotte. Down the road, Betty Shelby, a White Tulsa Police officer, was charged with first-degree manslaughter for killing Terence Crutcher in Tulsa, Oklahoma last Friday. Crutcher was black and unarmed. The video footage of his execution has entertained millions this week. President Barack Obama recommended hope, chided black people to put their faith in Hillary R. Clinton to continue progress, extend his legacy. #RacismIsNotAPrivilege INVEST in The COWS - http://paypal.me/GusTRenegade CALL IN NUMBER: 641.715.3640 CODE 564943# The C.O.W.S. archives: http://tiny.cc/76f6p

Charlotte under siege by rioters for a 2nd straight night. More information comes out about the tragic shooting of Keith Lamont Scott. Police say he had a gun, not a book - and he was not complying with lawful orders from officers. We spent most of yesterday's show talking about the folly of making a snap judgment on this tragic shooting. Trump surging. Integrity of the election process & voter fraud. Hillary confused why she's not up 50 points. Weiner at it again, but this time with a 15-year-old.

Join me on BenTheLifeCoach Radio Show! We have to address the root issue in America! We’ve seen police brutality throughout the history of our country and today it has become police murder; from Eric Garner to Sandra Bland who “mysteriously” died in police custody to the brutal slayings of Terrence Crutcher and Keith Lamont Scott. We are plagued by our own lies, our fears and our isms. Racism is a legacy we’ve created that has given us the permission to hate other human beings because of their ethnic make-up. I believe the real sickness here is hate. There is a systemic structure of hate that has infiltrated our country. We hate because of religion, creed and color. Until we treat the real illness we will keep on dying at the hands of the symptoms. Be human first! Be compassionate. Diminish your hate!
