My dad is friends with Dr. Kent Ellington at OrthoCarolina and they provided me with exceptional care. My dad knows Tommy John well and is a long time client and friend of my dad. Healthcare access is not equal across all countries around the world. Pediatric orthopedic surgeon Dr. Brian Scannell is actively working to address this issue. Recently, he resumed his passion for medical missions, embarking on a journey to provide essential care to underserved communities. In this episode of the Prosperous Doc Podcast, as Dr. Scannell joins host Shane Tenny, CFP®, to share his experiences and insights, offering inspiration for those considering similar humanitarian endeavors. Project Perfect World started in the late 80s with the refurbishment of a medical clinic in Ecuador. Dr. Scannell began volunteering with the group around 2010. At that time, the project's focus was shifting toward pediatric orthopedics. Now the group organizes twice-yearly missions to the area, providing medical care each spring and fall.“Anytime you're doing mission work, I think of going in and making sure that local surgeons and physicians are involved, making sure that there's good communication, making sure that there is good follow-up for those patients,” Dr. Scannell says. “So it's never something that you go in and you do these big surgeries, and then you're just gone.” The trips have been profoundly fulfilling for Dr. Scannell, both in terms of fighting burnout, reigniting his passion for the profession, and building long-term friendships with the other doctors who travel with him.

Get your iced coffees shaken and ready for a new episode of All That To Say! There are so many memorable moments from this episode…where to begin? Kristin is still finding her way as a new 40-something and this includes raging against the young redheads, loving her bird app, sleeping alone, worrying about taxes, and eating double patties (it's been 84 years…). Meanwhile, Miranda “maybe I'll just be ugly” Miller is coming off the high of her triple trip AND another epic April Fools' prank. She may not have seen any ghosts in Savannah, but she *did* fully lean into her Disney Adult era (with no panties, as usual). Good news: We finally have more money in the bank account. Bad news: ChapStick is not a substitute for eye cream. Thank you to our newest podcast sponsor - OrthoCarolina! Download the Hurt app for free today! Get your Sudafed meds ready, PodcATTS! It's Spring Break Tuesday! After a PSA about drugs (“Let's stop doing Meth”), it's onto lighter topics like Miranda's goldfish brain and her urgent PSA for the Chick-fil-a team. We can't wait to hear y'all's thoughts on too-sweet tea! Kristin remains sober-curious while debating the pros and cons of alcohol + menopause. Is this what 40 looks like?! Should we dabble in shrooms?! (Although that might disqualify us from The Amazing Race… Unclear.) Thank you to our newest podcast sponsor - OrthoCarolina! Download the Hurt app for free today! On this episode of The ASHHRA Podcast, our guest Paul Neagle, Chief Operating Officer at OrthoCarolina, dives deep into the importance of operations in HR. He shares his experiences in tackling a talent crisis, where 120 open positions were causing recruiting struggles. Paul's organization had to think outside the box to attract candidates during a competitive hiring period, where higher wages and sign-on bonuses were being offered elsewhere.Creative talent acquisition and retention became crucial in staying competitive, and Paul emphasizes the value of alumni status in the organization. He believes that people leaving the organization should be viewed differently, taking into account family situations and scheduling conflicts. HR needs to have more conversations with employees about their needs and concerns, considering alternative schedules to support single parents and offering diverse shifts and benefits.Paul also highlights the importance of operations within the organization and suggests that HR should report to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) to have a direct line to operations. He himself has taken on a new role where HR reports directly to him, and he expresses excitement in having HR at the table and valuing their contributions. Improving staff training, onboarding, and ongoing training for employees at different levels of tenure are areas of focus.Having a foundational understanding of the organization's operations is also crucial for HR representatives when answering candidate questions during the interview process. This helps demonstrate to candidates that HR is knowledgeable and informed about the organization. The episode concludes with Paul's desire to broaden unity within the organization, acknowledging that the biggest asset is its people. He encourages HR team members to interact within the organization, understand the differences between multiple clinics in different locations, and be present even when there are no problems to dispel the negative perception often associated with HR's presence.

Welcome to The Sports Docs Podcast with Dr. Catherine Logan and Dr. Ashley Bassett. On each episode we chat about the most recent developments in sports medicine and dissect through all the noise so you know which literature should actually impact your practice. On today's episode we're focusing on cartilage defects of the knee with Dr. Clayton Nuelle, Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Missouri and team physician for Mizzou athletics. His current research focuses on improving cartilage restoration and joint preservation techniques, so we are very excited to have him join us for our discussion today. We have some great articles for you that contribute well to our conversation on the surgical treatment of knee cartilage disease. The first article is a level I prospective RCT published in the May 2018 issue of AJSM titled “Matrix-Applied Characterized Autologous Cultured Chondrocytes Versus Microfracture – Five Year Follow-up of a Prospective Randomized Trial.” This multicenter study was performed at 14 sites across 7 different countries. Patients with symptomatic full thickness cartilage defects greater than 3 cm in size and involving the femoral condyle or trochlea were randomized to either the MACI procedure or microfracture procedure. If you're not familiar with the MACI procedure, we definitely recommend checking out our last Overtime episode where we do a deep dive into the details of that surgical technique. In this 5-year clinical trial, Brittberg and colleagues found that while both groups significantly improved after surgery, patients who underwent the MACI procedure were both clinically and statistically significantly better at 5 years compared to patients who underwent microfracture. Then, from the February issue of AJSM this year, we review the publication titled “Isolated Osteochondral Autograft versus Allograft Transplantation for the Treatment of Symptomatic Cartilage Lesions of the Knee.” Bryan Saltzman and his team at OrthoCarolina performed a systematic review of Llevel I and II studies investigating osteochondral transplant techniques. For our listeners, osteochondral transplants can be performed using autograft – the patient's own tissue, or allograft – donor tissue. Traditionally, autograft transplant or “OATs” has been used for smaller defects, to minimize donor-site morbidity, and has the benefits of avoiding an immune response and no concern for disease transmission. The osteochondral graft is typically harvested from nonweightbearing areas of the knee, such as the intercondylar notch or supracondylar ridge. Allograft transplant or “OCA” is indicated for larger defects. Benefits include the lack of donor site morbidity and the ability to take a graft from an area that correlates with the defect being addressed, such as patella to patella. Grafts can also be size-matched during the ordering process. Downsides include having to wait for allograft availability and cost, in addition to the immunologic and disease transmission risks already discussed, though those are very rare. Both techniques have the benefit of addressing not only the cartilage disease but also underlying bone loss. This systematic review concluded that both OATs and OCA resulted in favorable patient outcomes and graft survival rates at 5-year follow up, with no significant differences between the two. The autograft group was significantly younger, had smaller defect size, used a larger number of plugs and more frequently treated medial femoral condyle lesions. The allograft group had a larger number of patients with lateral femoral condyle and trochlear lesions.
April 19, 2022 The latest edition of Pit Pass Indy previews the Indianapolis 500 Open Test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, scheduled for April 20-21, 2022. Nearly every car/driver combination that is entered in this year's 106th Indianapolis 500 is expected to compete in two full days of testing on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval. Pit Pass Indy Host Bruce Martin brings our listeners up to speed with in-depth interviews from some of the biggest names in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. Those include seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson, who suffered a broken right hand from a crash in practice at Long Beach on April 8. The Panthers added at least seven new defensive players last weekend - and the #OneDayContract crew has brought in former Panthers defensive end and 10-year vet Al Wallace to talk about how the Panthers remade their defense. Of course, Al loves the additions of Derrick Brown and Yetur Gross-Matos, but Josh disagrees with the process of how the Panthers ended up with Brown in the first round. They'll talk about the way the Panthers are going about rebuilding their team, whether they should be following the Dolphins' blueprint and why the NFL Draft needs to change the way it's presented. On the football side, how many starters did the Panthers get in the draft? How much will Brown help Brian Burns' development and why does he think the defensive line is closer to the one the Panthers' had in 2003 than you think? Plus, why Al thinks Jeremy Chinn looks to him like a young Brian Dawkins, how close to the roster the Panthers UDFA's are and why the Panthers MUST sign a cornerback before the summer. Oh, and they'll talk Madden ratings, whether Cam Newton will get a job anytime soon, why quarantine facial hair always gets a Kawann and which members of the pod are in the "Big Arms & Running Backs Shouldn't Get Paid" Club. One Day Contract is a proud part of The Riot Network, powered by OrthoCarolina - be sure to rate, review and subscribe to hear more of your favorite Panthers podcasts!
