Shahidul Haq Khan, a Bangladeshi health worker, and Tim Miner, an American with the World Health Organization, worked together on a smallpox eradication team in Bangladesh in the early 1970s. The team was based on a hospital ship and traveled by speedboat to track down cases of smallpox from Barishal to Faridpur to Patuakhali. Every person who agreed to get the smallpox vaccination was a potential outbreak averted, so the team was determined to vaccinate as many people as possible. The duo leaned on each other, sometimes literally, as they traversed the country's rugged and watery geography. Khan, whom Miner sometimes referred to as “little brother,” used his local knowledge to help the team navigate both the cultural and physical landscape. When crossing rickety bamboo bridges, he would hold Miner's hand and help him across. “We didn't let him fall,” chuckled Khan.Episode 4 of “Eradicating Smallpox” explores what it took to bring care directly to people where they were.To conclude the episode, host Céline Gounder speaks with public health advocate Joe Osmundson about his work to help coordinate a culturally appropriate response to mpox in New York City during the summer of 2022. “The model that we're trying to build is a mobile unit that delivers all sorts of sexual and primary healthcare opportunities. They're opportunities!” exclaimed Osmundson. In Conversation With Host Céline Gounder:Joe OsmundsonPublic health advocate and clinical assistant professor of biology at New York University@reluctantlyjoeVoices From the episode:Tim MinerFormer World Health Organization smallpox eradication program worker in BangladeshShahidul Haq KhanFormer World Health Organization smallpox eradication program worker in BangladeshFind a transcript of this episode here.“Epidemic” is a co-production of KFF Health News and Just Human Productions. To hear other KFF Health News podcasts, click here.Subscribe to “Epidemic” on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Pocket Casts, or wherever you listen to podcasts.

When it comes to the creative scene, Charlotte isn't often mentioned in the same breath as peer cities like Austin or Nashville. After all, our city's unofficial tagline is “Banktown,” not “Music City” or “Keep Austin Weird.” But Charlotte does have a thriving creative community. And a new study by the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute provides more details about that community's assets, challenges and what we can do to provide artists, singers, graphic designers and other creatives with more support. Based on a survey of more than 630 local creatives, this new study found many encouraging signs. A majority of Charlotte creatives said they're happy working here, and that the city offers a supportive environment. But there were also trouble spots. Many creatives described financially precarious situations, having to work other jobs to make ends meet, and a sense that, to truly be appreciated, they need to leave Charlotte and work elsewhere. Charlotte is Creative co-founders Tim Miner and Matt Olin, who commissioned this study, join Future Charlotte to talk about the city's creative community. We tackle questions like "Is Charlotte creative?" (Yes), why some creatives feel like they have to leave to Charlotte to succeed, and why it matters that our creative community is healthy. More information: https://www.charlotteiscreative.com/ Full survey: https://bit.ly/CLTCreativeSurvey
The inaugural Local/Street exhibition drew more than 1,000 people to the Mint Museum, prompting a move to the Mint Museum in Charlotte's Center City. Lawrence Gordon is a man who has many skills, and applies them in several different arenas. By day, he's the VP of Workforce Development at Hope Haven, a Charlotte non-profit dedicated to helping those suffering from addiction. At night, he's also a basketball coach at Carmel Christian. Lawrence's work with his kids writing children's books, however, might be his greatest passion of them all. In the past few years, he's worked with his 12 year old daughter and 11 year old son to write the colorful kids' books "Unicorn Dreams" and "Dad, the Bully, and the Orange Ball," respectively. Since writing the books, Lawrence and his children have been hard at work promoting them, attending books signings, and posing for pictures. In today's episode of The Biscuit CLT Podcast, head biscuit-baker Tim Miner talks to Lawrence about his day job, his creative work, and what lessons his children get to learn by being active participants in the creative process. Find out more about Lawrence and his books at https://www.booksbylg.com/.
In 2009, local freelance writer Jody Mace was faced with a question that she heard echoed around the city: What do we do in Charlotte that's fun and not incredibly expensive. That's when Jody and her husband decided to build the aptly-named website Charlotte on the Cheap, where they would list as many of the fun and exciting events that were happening around the city that cost less than your average Panthers or Hornets game. More than ten years later, charlotteonthecheap.com is still the go-to source for a packed event calendar that anyone can attend. In today's episode of the Biscuit CLT podcast, Tim Miner talks to Jody Mace about founding Charlotte on the Cheap, what her working process is, and what some things are that creatives and promoters can do to get more visibility.
This week marks the fifth birthday of the Charlotte chapter of Creative Mornings (CM/CLT). What started as an effort to gather people together once a month to share, laugh, learn and celebrate Charlotte’s creative community has inspired many collaborations, as well as the development of the HUG micro-grant program, Queen City Quiz Show and Charlotte Is Creative, the nonprofit parent of The Biscuit. To mark the occasion, Matt Olin and Tim Miner, local organizers of CM/CLT and founders of Charlotte Is Creative, sat down to reflect on how the last years have changed their lives, what they’ve learned about Charlotte’s creative community and the challenges that lie ahead in the next five years.

Born to musical parents, music has always been a huge part of Toiya’s formative years. Listening intently to the harmonic blends of her parents, both at home and in the church choir, it was no surprise that this Los Angeles native began exercising her vocal abilities at the early age of 8. Branching out to take formal vocal lessons apart from her family, she also studied piano and drums, all of which shaped her strong musical foundation. Today Toiya is a seasoned worship leader, becoming one of the most sought after musical talents in many Southern California churches. She has served at Full Harvest International Church, Benny Hinn Ministries, Hope of Glory Christian Center and currently serves at Canaan Inheritance Worship Center under her Pastors Owen and Audrey Black. She has also provided background vocals for the incomparable Donnie McClurkin, Johnny B. Williams, Judy McAllister, Micah Stampley, Calvin Bernard Rhone as well as the iconic Shirley Caesar and R&B artist Monica during the 2001 BET Gospel Celebration. In her quest to keep a fresh, versatile and cutting edge musical perspective, Toiya branched out from her church choir beginnings to provide background vocals and production work for an A-list of major recording artists such as Tim Miner, Gavin Rossdale, Seal, producer David Foster, Lionel Richie and Raphael Saadiq. Additionally, she also sang background for the American Idol finalist Clay Aiken and second season winner Ruben Studdard in 2003. Toiya B. has cultivated her sensational style with the musical influences of artists Jill Scott, Luther Vandross, India Arie, Anita Baker, Faith Evans, Lalah Hathaway, Whitney Houston, Fred Hammond, Jonathan McReynolds and Mary Mary. Deep sultry tones displayed throughout inspirational selections on her sophomore project “El Elyon” assert it is undeniable that this neo-classic soul songstress has a style uniquely her own and soon to be an unparalled force to be reckoned with. It's hard to find someone who is more fiercely proud of being a native Charlottean than Winston Robinson. So much so, that Robinson's nickname of "Wilmo" is inspired by his native neighborhood of Wilmore. That, combined with the work that he's doing as former president of the Lockwood Neighborhood Association, through A Vibe Called Fresh, an annual food and music festival open to all residents, as well as founding an LLC, The Applesauce Group, to support it all. In today's episode of the The Biscuit CLT Podcast - CMCLT Rewind, hosts Tim Miner and Matt Olin talk to Winston immediately following his talk at the March Creative Mornings event at Divine Barrel Brewing. Tune in now to hear Winston speak about what being a native Charlottean means to him, what he wanted to convey when speaking about codeswitching in his CMCLT speech, and his thoughts on the current state of The Excelsior Club.
Good things come in threes, and with this week's episode, The Biscuit CLT Podcast hits the trifecta with an episode on visual creativity in the Queen City. Classic Black is the most recent sculptural exhibition at the Mint Museum Randolph. Inspired by the hauntingly dark and matte basalt sculptures of Josiah Wedgwood. The sculptures are striking in their own right, but they're presented in conjunction with the amorphous and flowing designs of local artist Owl, part of the Southern Tiger Collective. Tim Miner sits down with Brian Gallagher, Curator of Decorative Arts at the Mint Museum, and Owl. Hit the play button now to hear them talk about the design behind the exhibition, how Owl's art enhances the sculptures, and what the collaboration with a local artist means for the museum.
It takes institutions of all shapes and sizes to make a vibrant arts scene. The national and international artists attracted to both the walls of LaCa Projects, and prestigious residencies at McColl Center for Art + Innovation bring exciting and fresh perspectives from outside the Queen City. Today on The Biscuit CLT Podcast, co-biscuit baker Tim Miner talks with Argentinian visual artists Franco Fasoli (currently an artist in residence at McColl) and Octavio Garabello, whose collaborative exhibition, Intimismos, is on view now at LaCa Projects. The pair talk about their time in Berlin and Barcelona, the representation of Latin American history in their art, and what they've learned about Charlotte's art scene.
At the February edition of Creative Mornings Charlotte held at The Comedy Zone, Stacy Cassio delivered a moving talk about the global theme of "Invest." As the head of Pink Mentor Network, Stacy is leading by example by investing in women in the city of Charlotte. Her organization is helping empower women by providing a network or resources and support, leading to a more equitable environment in the Queen City. In today's CMCLT Rewind, Tim Miner and Matt Olin speak to Stacy immediately following her featured speech at The Comedy Zone about moving to Charlotte thirteen years ago, the feeling of not having a proper mentor network, and what she would say to someone becoming a mentor.
Joni Deutsch of WFAE, delivered a thoughtful talk on the global theme of "Silence" at this month's Creative Mornings Charlotte gathering. After everyone cleared out, hosts Matt Olin and Tim Miner sat down to talk to Joni. In this episode of the Biscuit CLT Podcast: CMCLT Rewind, hear Joni talk about how she developed her love of music, the role of public radio in storytelling, and how her podcast Amplifier is putting a spotlight on the Charlotte music scene.
Four and a half years ago, Matt Olin and Tim Miner sent email invites out for a first-time gathering of creatives at Laca Projects in Wesley Heights. With the goal of attracting 40-50 people, it quickly became clear that they were on to something when the event sold out. And then sold out the next week. And the next week, the week after that and so on. Tomorrow morning at Black Hawk Hardware in Park Road Shopping Center, Matt and Tim will host the 50th meeting of Creative Mornings Charlotte. In today's episode of the Biscuit CLT Podcast, producer Andy Goh talks to Matt and Tim about the first 50 CMCLT events. Hear them talk about how the event got started, the role the venues play, their favorite memories and much more. Give us a call or text at 704.835.0193 and leave us a :30 second message with your favorite Creative Mornings memory. We'll use the best messages in next week's episode of the podcast.

Design creation is just as much a creative endeavor as painting or photography. On today's Biscuit CLT podcast, hosts Tim Miner and Matt Olin talk to the Haas Brothers (Simon and Niki), who just opened the very first design show ever curated at SOCO Gallery. The exhibition, titled I Saw Design, and Art Opened Up My Eyes, I Saw Design, is on view at SOCO through January 17, 2020. It combines the brothers' acute sense of wonder, whimsy and imagination. In this conversation, you'll hear the brothers talk about the inspiration behind their designs, what it's like working together as brothers, and how a life in construction taught Niki the importance of framing. With Charlotte's chronic homeless population at just under two thousand people, providing resources can be challenging. In July of 2016, Emmanuel and Adrienne Threatt founded Hope Vibes with the hopes of providing basic hygiene products to those who need it most, particularly women. In this episode of The Biscuit CLT Podcast, Tim Miner talks to Emmanuel and Adrienne at Community Matters Cafe. Their conversation covers the founding of Hope Vibes, how they balance running a non-profit and a relationship, as well as their hopes for the city. Find out more about Hope Vibes at hopevibes.org. Stick around after that chat for a short conversation with Charles Thomas about the work Knight Foundation is doing in Charlotte's Historic West End.

One month ago, we introduced you to Shan Wallace, a Baltimore-based photographer spending time in Charlotte on a residency project organized by The Roll Up CLT. We joined Shan on a photo she did with middle school students. She talked about her goals for her time in Charlotte, including creating a collection of portraits featuring residents of Charlotte’s mostly African-American west side. In today’s episode of the Biscuit podcast, we take you to Beatties Ford Library, where Shan is hosting a free portrait session, something she’ll do each last Monday of the month until October. The photo shoots, which are open to anyone from the community, are meant to give access to a type of photo of themselves that many residents wouldn’t have otherwise. We’ll talk with Shan about why portraiture is so important, and we’ll also hear a story about two young men Shan was able to reach with her work. Let’s take a listen! In the EP, LiF explores themes of self-realization and constant evolution over lush, multi-instrumental arrangements. In the second segment, we revisit writer Jonathan McFadden’s conversation with Levine Museum of the New South staff historian Dr. Willie Griffin. In the second part of a three part series, Jonathan and Dr. Griffin talk about the root causes of gentrification and what happens to the populations who face displacement. Many people in Charlotte see the creative energy that bounces back and forth from Creative Mornings hosts and Biscuit co-founders Matt Olin and Tim Miner. That’s why we’re calling this segment Creative Besties. On each Creative Besties segment, we’ll profile a pair of creators whose collaborations enhance each person and their work as a whole. Far too often in our wonderful city, we tend to celebrate what’s new and shiny as opposed to what’s been tested through time. That’s why we’re calling this segment #OGCLT. We want to celebrate the Charlotte that’s existed long before the breweries and condos. Up first on #OGCLT? Mert’s Heart and Soul! Mert’s has been a staple of the Uptown restaurant scene since 1998. Since then it’s been known as the go to spot for authentic soul and southern food inside the 277 loop. Owners James and Renee’ Bazzelle are the husband and wife duo behind the cornbread and collard greens, and I was lucky enough to sit down with James one morning before lunch service. In this segment of #OGCLT, James will tell us about the origins of Mert’s, and the significant role Hugh McColl personally played in bringing Mert’s to its current location on College Street. James talks about the food of Mert’s, how he originally didn’t like cornbread and what happened to change his mind. Finally, don’t miss what James has to say about what his hopes are for the city of Charlotte at the end of the interview. The Biscuit Podcast is produced by Tim Miner, Matt Olin and Andy Goh.
