When it comes to the creative scene, Charlotte isn't often mentioned in the same breath as peer cities like Austin or Nashville. After all, our city's unofficial tagline is “Banktown,” not “Music City” or “Keep Austin Weird.” But Charlotte does have a thriving creative community. And a new study by the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute provides more details about that community's assets, challenges and what we can do to provide artists, singers, graphic designers and other creatives with more support. Based on a survey of more than 630 local creatives, this new study found many encouraging signs. A majority of Charlotte creatives said they're happy working here, and that the city offers a supportive environment. But there were also trouble spots. Many creatives described financially precarious situations, having to work other jobs to make ends meet, and a sense that, to truly be appreciated, they need to leave Charlotte and work elsewhere. Charlotte is Creative co-founders Tim Miner and Matt Olin, who commissioned this study, join Future Charlotte to talk about the city's creative community. We tackle questions like "Is Charlotte creative?" (Yes), why some creatives feel like they have to leave to Charlotte to succeed, and why it matters that our creative community is healthy. In today’s episode of the Biscuit podcast, we take you to Beatties Ford Library, where Shan is hosting a free portrait session, something she’ll do each last Monday of the month until October. The photo shoots, which are open to anyone from the community, are meant to give access to a type of photo of themselves that many residents wouldn’t have otherwise. We’ll talk with Shan about why portraiture is so important, and we’ll also hear a story about two young men Shan was able to reach with her work. Let’s take a listen! On today’s episode of the Biscuit, we’ve got two segments we’re going to hear. In the first segment, we hear Charlotte producer and rapper RoyalCity LiF talk about his recently released EP More.Major on the segment we like to call Liner Notes. More.Major is LiF’s first EP, but he created almost the entire project himself, writing, rapping, sampling and arranging each of the six tracks on the project. In the EP, LiF explores themes of self-realization and constant evolution over lush, multi-instrumental arrangements. In the second segment, we revisit writer Jonathan McFadden’s conversation with Levine Museum of the New South staff historian Dr. Willie Griffin. In the second part of a three part series, Jonathan and Dr. Griffin talk about the root causes of gentrification and what happens to the populations who face displacement. The Biscuit Podcast is produced by Tim Miner, Matt Olin and Andy Goh. Music by Harvey Cummings.
It’s no secret that business and banking are core to Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s identity. Often, the connection between creativity and business can be obscured. However, the bond between the two is stronger than you might think. In this episode of the Culture For All podcast, we’ll take a look at how a strong creative class makes Charlotte- Mecklenburg a more attractive location for businesses. We’ll also examine the impact the cultural sector has on our local economy. You’ll hear from economic expert Steve Pearce of the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance about the economics of art and culture. Timothy Hager and Matt Olin will talk about creativity being necessary for critical thinking. Keith Cradle and Tom Hanchett will speak about how a lack of funding destabilizes cultural organizations. Finally, we talk to business owners Jennifer Appleby, Marcie and Marty Kelso and Linda Lockman-Brooks about how a strong creative community is essential for their businesses to thrive. Host Glenn Burkins, a Mecklenburg County resident, leads you through this look at the business of arts. Many people in Charlotte see the creative energy that bounces back and forth from Creative Mornings hosts and Biscuit co-founders Matt Olin and Tim Miner. That kind of chemistry is something that takes a lot of time, work and a little luck to develop, and we believe that is something to be celebrated. That’s why we’re calling this segment Creative Besties. On each Creative Besties segment, we’ll profile a pair of creators whose collaborations enhance each person and their work as a whole. Up first on Creative Besties is Sydney Duarte and Andrea Orr. Sydney is a yoga instructor at NoDa Yoga and a social ambassador. Andrea is a branding and marketing consultant, and the founder of Level Up CLT. On this segment of Creative Besties, Tim Miner and myself talk to Andrea and Sydney about moving to Charlotte, finding your voice here, and what their hopes are for the next five years. The Biscuit Podcast is produced by Tim Miner, Matt Olin and Andy Goh. Music by Harvey Cummings.
Far too often in our wonderful city, we tend to celebrate what’s new and shiny as opposed to what’s been tested through time. That’s why we’re calling this segment #OGCLT. We want to celebrate the Charlotte that’s existed long before the breweries and condos. Up first on #OGCLT? Mert’s Heart and Soul! Mert’s has been a staple of the Uptown restaurant scene since 1998. Since then it’s been known as the go to spot for authentic soul and southern food inside the 277 loop. Owners James and Renee’ Bazzelle are the husband and wife duo behind the cornbread and collard greens, and I was lucky enough to sit down with James one morning before lunch service. In this segment of #OGCLT, James will tell us about the origins of Mert’s, and the significant role Hugh McColl personally played in bringing Mert’s to its current location on College Street. James talks about the food of Mert’s, how he originally didn’t like cornbread and what happened to change his mind. Finally, don’t miss what James has to say about what his hopes are for the city of Charlotte at the end of the interview. The Biscuit Podcast is produced by Tim Miner, Matt Olin and Andy Goh. Infectious enthusiasm for creativity abounds in this episode of 1K with Charlotte’s own Renaissance Man, Matt Olin. We’re not just blowing smoke. As a professional theater producer, the Broadway productions he had his hands in earned serious recognition at the Tony Awards (14 wins, 50 noms). He’s toured the country playing keyboard in a rock band. He does right-brained thinking for left-brained people, writing jingles, commercial scripts, and other creative copy. And for the past two and a half years, he’s hosted the monthly speaker series CreativeMornings/Charlotte. His CreativeMornings role—one he volunteers for—is what first brought him on our radar. In this podcast, Matt tells us more about that role. If you couldn’t tell from his varied background, he’s a man overflowing with and driven by curiosity. It’s that curiosity that helps him and his team find compelling speakers, whether it’s a pizza-obsessed baker or a former inmate turned Washington Post journalist. Other episode highlights include elevating the creative class in a city known for banking, Matt’s secret super power for spotting creative talent, how being an identical twin steeped him in the art of differentiation from an early age, and listening to binaural sounds to get the brain juices flowing. 1K is affiliated with the 100 Words Film Festival and powered by OrthoCarolina. 1K is hosted by Scott Galloway.
