It's my first guest from Scotland! Anna Blackwell of Blackwell Games joins me to talk about some of her favorite fandoms! First discovering Anna's work via a Kickstarter that had been shared on Twitter (go buy a copy of Apothecaria!), we start things off with talking about Sci-Fi and Fantasy books. We talk about what appeals to her with these books, and we delve into Terry Pratchett's Discworld series specifically. From there, Anna talks about her passion for video games. A passion that led her to start university with video games as a goal. We talk about how that changed and shifted, her video game reviews, and some of her favorite games (Mario Party & Rimworld). Then we get into the back half of the episode, which focuses on Tabletop Roleplaying Games. Anna talks about how she first got into TTRPG's, what games she's played, and what she is drawn to. We also talk about how she got into TTRPG game design. From her first game she made, to having several successful Kickstarter's for more, and what she continues to create. This is seriously a great conversation and one that you should listen to if you're in the TTRPG space. Bob Cartwright has backpacked around the world, competed in numerous Original Mountain Marathon events, designed multiple pieces of lightweight adventure kit,and walked the 200 mile Great Outdoor Challenge in Scotland more than a handful of times. In 2005 Bob established backpackinglight.co.uk with the aim of making lightweight hiking, biking, and riding more accessible, and then went on to launch The Outdoor Station Podcast in 2005. The show has now received well over 14 million downloads, and across the 530-plus episodes Bob has chatted to an impressive array of outdoor fanatics, such as Jenny Tough, Anna Blackwell, Chris Townsend and Keith Fosket. Alongside these conversions, Bob also documents live expos and events, and shares his own hiking experiences through travel diaries and musical journals. In this episode Bob and I dive into his childhood experiences to rediscover where the foundations for his love of the outdoors were laid. We then travel the world as he shares some of his experiences of backpacking for 18 months on a shoestring. How does one go about doing such a thing? We explore the concepts of fear and perceptions, and how we can often find ourselves walking the thin line between excitement and anxiety. Bob and I then turn our chat to podcasting and media. What did it look like pioneering the way in the podcast scene, and what have been the peaks and troughs of the 15 year journey? And how can we all take on our own goals and dreams, even when we seemingly don't have anyone to follow who is leading the way?Contact Bob:FacebookInstagram
Hello and welcome back to STAE OF MIND with Nutritional Therapist, Grace Kingswell. My guest today is Anna Blackwell. Anna is an adventurer, which I feel like is one of those things you decide to be when you’re a child but that realistically you never end up being. As Anna explains in the episode, she never had grand ideas from an early age to be an adventurer, she sort of fell into it and realised that the physical endurance and mental resilience needed to put yourself through gruelling experiences was something she really enjoyed. I was personally really intrigued to find out what she eats on long expeditions, and I was quite horrified at one of the answers, and what it’s like not seeing another human for days on end. Whether you’re into hiking and adventure or not, this episode is an enlightening exploration into the human psyche and what it is about some of us that makes us enjoy and seek out adversity. I also want to apologise now for one instance in this episode where, due to the zoom connection being a bit slow, I basically interrupt Anna multiple times - podcasting long distance via Zoom is hard, so I hope you can forgive me on that one! I also mention a trek I did in New Zealand and couldn’t remember the name at the time, it’s called The Banks Peninsula and it was some of the best, and hardest, days of my life! Taking a slight deviation from breaking down stigma, this episode is more focused on overcoming mental and physical challenges. I talk to adventurer and intrepid explorer Anna Blackwell who is just infectiously positive so I hope you really enjoy listening. In part one Anna told us about her experiences while walking the Kings Trail in Sweden and the Green Ribbon in Scandinavia. This podcast concentrates on her 2018 4000km tandem kayak paddle with her friend Kate to the Black Sea from LondonDetails of her trip can be found under the heading trekking across the wilderness of arctic Sweden2019 was another exciting one: in September she completed the latest expedition, The Green Ribbon, a 1,000km solo trek across Arctic and Northern Scandinavia. However turning the clock back to 2018 this podcast specifically discusses Kayaking the Continent expedition, a world first journey tandem kayaking 4,000km from London to the Black Sea in Romania with her friend Kate.I'm sure you will agree Anna is a gutsy 26 year old and her enthusiasm for travel and life is a pleasure to hear.
Welcome to the first podcast of 2020 and I'm delighted to introduce you to Anna Blackwell a 26 year old adventurer who got bitten by the adventure and travel bug just a few years ago when she undertook her gap year in South America. She has since taken this passion to the limit pushing herself further and over greater distances completing a series of adventures over the last few years: trekking across the wilderness of arctic Sweden with just reindeer for company, walking 500 and 1000 miles across France and Spain along ancient pilgrimage routes, summiting the highest peak in North Africa, and hitch-hiking to Morocco (amongst plenty of others!)
Anna Blackwell is an adventurer, writer, photographer and speaker with a love of the outdoors and pushing her limits. This has led her to pursue numerous adventures, from kayaking across Europe, spending five weeks trekking across the wilderness of Arctic Sweden alone, to walking 1,000 miles solo across France and Spain, and even hitch-hiking to Morocco. In Anna’s words This July I set off on a 1,000km solo trek across Arctic and Northern Scandinavia. I started at the Treriksröset (the cairn signifying where Sweden, Norway and Finland meet) and made my way south, following the length of the mountains on the Swedish-Norwegian border. The expedition was self-supported, solo, and crossed some of Europe's greatest wilderness areas. I carried everything I needed (weighing in at around 25kg) and wild camped most nights. Travelling through such remote areas, I was often going up to four or five days without seeing any other people. Throughout this expedition I aimed to minimise my environmental footprint to the greatest extent possible, by working with with sustainability-focused organisations, choosing locally sourced food where possible, reducing my plastic waste and leaving no trace in the wilderness. I also opted to travel to my start point using trains and buses rather than taking an internal short-haul flight. She's trekked across the wilderness of Arctic Sweden, walked 1,600 km along ancient pilgrimage routes in France and Spain, summitted Mt. Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa, paddled a tandem kayak 4,000 km from London to the Black Sea coast in Romania, and most recently completed an adventure she calls The Green Ribbon, a 1,000 km solo trek along the length of the mountains between Norway and Sweden.
