The successor to the Nintendo Switch is (almost) here. But it's arrived at an awkward time for both Nintendo and gamers alike. The Switch 2 was initially announced in January, but fans learned much more about it during a Nintendo Direct livestream a few weeks ago. It included information about the system's launch date (June 5), its hardware specs, the games Nintendo fans could expect to play at release, and, perhaps most importantly, prices for both the Switch 2 and its games. That last part has put a damper on some of the enthusiasm for the system's launch. It will retail for $449.99. The price of Nintendo's games is also climbing.Nintendo is citing a rise in the cost of the console's production as well as economic uncertainties like President Donald Trump's tariffs as reasons for the price hikes. We dig into the latest for this installment of our series, "Game Mode."Want to support 1A? Mikah Sargent leads gamers into Mac's game mode and controller connectivity, revealing tricks for gamers and tech enthusiasts. -Game Mode Overview A special Mac feature exclusive to macOS Sonoma 14 and Apple Silicon devices that optimizes gaming performance. We all know the classics: Monopoly, Backgammon, Checkers, and many more. For some, board games are relegated to the dregs of American entertainment, to be broken out at bad parties and played by candlelight on nights where the power's out. We discuss what's driving the tabletop gaming surge and what it means for an industry that's primarily analog. Want to support 1A? 2023 was a big year in games."The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom" brought a new installment to a beloved series, six years after the last game. It broke sales records and became the best-selling Zelda game to date. And it wasn't the only blockbuster game this year. Marvel's "Spider-man 2," "Final Fantasy 16," "Diablo 4," and "Super Mario Wonder" were released this year as well. But at the 2023 Game Awards, the big winner was "Baldur's Gate 3" — scoring five awards, including game of the year. We recap the year in video games and check in with Adam Smith, lead writer on "Baldur's Gate 3." Later we revisit our Legend of Zelda conversation from earlier this year. Want to support 1A? On this episode of What Happened When, Tony and guest host Casio Kid deliver a WHW Patreon treat that we believe you're really going to enjoy. LKBH Adam DeMouy, WHW Monday's own special troll, is having us watch a couple of things, and wrote (at length): "...No Mercy 2007 - All 3 Triple H matches . The Game was in peak Game Mode during this time and wrestled 3 championship matches in 1 memorable night. The opening Promo where Vince is in the ring giving Randy Orton the wwe championship then The Games music hits and the son in law comes down to the ring to cut an amazing promo on Vinny Mac … Gets what he wants and capitalizes … What a celebration afterwards as JR busts a nut when The Game wins. But then Vince makes him wrestle 2 more matches vs Umaga ( who was a bum , just there cause he was Samoan ) then the main event vs Randy Orton in his prime again. What a match this was … This ppv was the best ppv wwe did in the late early 2000's … The next night on Raw, HBK came back to challenge Orton which was also a great feud. This was during Randy's peak legend killer phase. Also, I want Tony to relive the only match he personally ever gave 4 stars to on Nitro . Disco Inferno vs Chris Benoit US Championship Match. Nitro 8-16-99 . Disco cuts a promo before the match about being the only star in WCW then he goes down a fights Benoit in a match Schiavone really loved . It's only a 8 minute match. I personally talked with Disco Inferno and he holds this match in high regard and said it was his best match in WCW and he remembers the 4 stars Schiavone gave him on commentary for this match . It would be a personal favor to me ; the longest contributor to the WHW patreon page … just think when we started it was just me and about 8 other guys chatting with Tony in the Gwinnett Braves baseball booth or tuning into listening to Tony call baseball and being miserable to now being totally transformed into Nitro era Schiavone and being basically the VP of All Ego Wrestling…. Hey I can't take all the credit but I can take a small little bit of it… So I guess in closing when you gonna hire Redneck Disco to make sure you have your Starbucks coffee brought to you ? I mean hell if Jake Hager can make six figures for wrestling 3 times a year ; surely I can make 7 figures for carrying a bag and driving a car lol…. Love ya Tony and here for the adventure..." It's been over three years since "Animal Crossing: New Horizons" was released. It became one of the best-selling video games of the year — moving over 42 million copies, almost four times as much as the previous edition of the game.It also renewed interest in a video game trend known for finding magic in mundane tasks: cozy gaming. Games like "Stardew Valley," "Harvest Moon," and "Unpacking," where the objective is less about shooting, fighting, or space colonization and more about gentle verbs — tending, farming, and homemaking. And the video game industry is taking notice. We discuss the impact and popularity of cozy gaming. Want to support 1A? Give to your local public radio station and subscribe to this podcast. Have questions? After spending two weeks using the beta versions of watchOS 10, iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS Sonoma, and tvOS 17, we discuss our experiences and highlight our favorite new features from each of the updates on this week's episode of The MacRumors Show. watchOS 10 is a major update for the Apple Watch, overhauling its entire user interface. The update refocuses the Apple Watch around a scrollable view of widgets, remaps the buttons, and rearranges the Home Screen of apps. Almost all of Apple's stock apps have received complete redesigns centered around a vertically scrollable view of pages. The update also brings Time in Daylight tracking to Apple Health and adds mood logging to the Mindfulness app. iOS 17 introduces features like StandBy mode, contact posters, and Live voicemail, while iPadOS 17 makes some meaningful enhancements to Stage Manager, introduces external camera support, and brings over Lock Screen customization, Live Activities, and the Health app from the iPhone. macOS Sonoma adds an integrated video screen saver and wallpaper experience, desktop widgets, Safari web apps, and Game Mode. tvOS 17 is a modest update that redesigns the Control Center and introduces FaceTime via Continuity Camera. A large number of new features, like interactive widgets, improved autocorrect, the Messages redesign, offline maps, authentication code autofill, Apple Music crossfade, Note links, support for multiple timers, video call reactions and presenter overlays, and improved PDF support, come to several of Apple's updated operating systems.
